I was thinking the same thing belle. Why did they need to add the thumbs down? Seems like quite a negative thing to have on what should be a supportive place for people to ask questions, no?

Wish I was able to help one of you but we are also away - June 19th - July 22nd. I am also looking for someone to look after my 10yr old boy who is 5kgs. He doesn't do well in kennels, they really stress him. He's very sweet, just likes to sleep a lot and gets plenty of exercise just in the garden. If there is anyone going away late July - August I could definitely help (dogs must be ok with children though). TIA

I am also looking for someone to look after a very small (5kg) 10yr old dog and an indoor/outdoor cat. Both pets are very easy to care for. Our dog is sensitive and sweet and has never done well in kennels. I would prefer to find someone who would care for our dog in their home and we would happily return the favor... Sorry to hijack the thread

We recently took our children to the Seychelles and it was great. That said, it was very expensive and we were only there 4 full days, however that was enough. Any more time and I think they would have gotten bored. We stayed on Mahe Island at the Constance Ephelia Resort, which was beautiful. All the water activities were included (kayaking, snorkeling, SUP, etc). The North beach was breathtaking, like something out of a postcard. The resort also kept a large box of sand toys on the beach for the kids to use. If you're up for a little bit of adventure, I would highly recommend zip-lining down the mountain. The company is called SMAC Adventures and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Have a wonderful holiday wherever you decide to go :)

I love Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. I've used them often for many things, including getting crayon and marker off walls. I've never tried them on shoes but I would imagine they would work great. You can get them here - I got mine at Ace Hardware.

No need to be rude jay14, for parents who have children with allergies and sensitivities something as simple as feeding a child becomes a big deal and other families simply don't want their kids eating junk food on a regular basis for a variety of reasons. When you come to a birthday party, it is an optional event you have been invited to and you are prepared for what will come. I don't think anyone expects there not to be cake or some degree of junk food at a party as well as hopefully some healthier options. Bringing food into the classroom though is totally different, parents didn't sign up for that. I was just suggesting that since it's other people's kids rather than your own that you are giving food to, you could maybe consider the wishes of those parents. Sending the food home at the end of the day rather than distributing in class is a good compromise and avoids the children who are unable to eat the food feeling unnecessarily marginalised. I guess it depends a bit on the age of the children too. My son is three and although he understands some foods will make him sick, it is still hard for him to say no when the other kids are having things or understand exactly what ingredients he needs to screen out. I don't think it's fair to be teachers in the position of screening foods and from experience they are not that good at it anyway. Unless you baked a food yourself, you don't really know exactly what it contains and I would never really trust food from outside sources if my child had a life threatening allergy. Do what works for you, but don't ridicule those parents who already have a harder road as it is, if you had seen your little boy crying as his stomach cramped, waking in the night in pain or becoming agitated and emotional you might not find the situation so funny or be so quick to dismiss 30 days of cupcakes at school each year as the only option for celebration. edited by kiwispiers on 04/04/2014 Just wanted to say, SO very well said! I completely agree with you! edited by Kaba on 05/04/2014

We have some lovely new neighbors. They have a large dog, who is very sweet but when he is outside he barks almost non-stop. When they leave for a few hours the dog can go in and out as he pleases. The last time I was home and they were not, the dog was outside barking consistently for more than 4 hours. I am a huge dog lover, I have a dog myself, but the continuous barking makes me want to bang my head against the wall. I know I should just go over and speak with them but I don't know how to do so without it creating some tension between us, even if I do it in the very nicest way possible. Any tips? edited by Kaba on 22/03/2014 edited by Kaba on 22/03/2014

We went the first Friday it was open and really enjoyed it! My kids especially loved the little petting zoo put on by Posh Paws. They had baby goats, a snake, rabbits, ferrets, pony rides... We were surprised that there were only about 12 vendor booths but it was the first Friday and photos I saw showed that there were more vendors yesterday. A bakery had a booth selling fresh breads, and we picked up some great organic vegetables when heading out. Some of the other booths were: K9 Friends, Equestrian Equipment, brightly colored hand-painted ceramics. That's all I can remember at the moment but there were others as well. edited by Kaba on 22/03/2014

I was in Time Square to get a gift, and went into this shop, sorry don't remember the name but it's on the first floor close to the food court, that's dedicated to child safety. Let me see if I can find a link or something. I also can't remember the name of the shop but it's the first/best one that came to mind for me as well. They have so many options for child safety, it's great.

I don't know if this is the right thing to do but when we found a baby bird in our garden we first tried to locate the nest. We were unsuccessful so I took one of my DD's old shoe boxes (without the lid) and put some leaves, long twigs, and a small very shallow bowl of water in it. Trying to have as little physical contact with the bird as possible, I placed it it the shoe box and wedged the shoe box in the branches of a tree. The hope was that the mother would hear it calling, and also to get it off the ground where dogs and cats could easily catch it. Hope that helps. edited by Kaba on 04/02/2014

Hi ladies, I'm looking for some good boxing, or MMA classes that take place in the morning while the kids are in school. The ones I've tried are: Dubai Polo Club Optimal Fitness Fit Boys (JLT) MMA Fitness Center I've just stumbled upon Pride Fitness Center which looks really good but their classes are either at 7am (won't work with the school run), or in the evening which also doesn't work for me. Any suggestions are highly appreciated! TIA

We went recently, got there at about 10:15am (opens at 10am) and got in to see Santa about 12:15pm. It was a long wait but they had many different arts and crafts tables and my children hardly noticed how long we were waiting. DH and I both thought it was well organized. Santa is amazing, probably the best one we've ever seen. Our DD was nearly in tears when she left because she was so happy, which made the wait absolutely worth it in our eyes. I guess it all depends on your expectations...

Hi ladies, In-laws coming to visit early January, want to get them a couple's massage spa gift voucher for Christmas. Checked out Movenpick already but they only give male masseuses for the men, which won't do for my FIL. Any other recommendations for a nice, classy spa who will do either separate or couple's massage, but will give female therapists for both? The closer to JBR the better. Also looked at Grovernor House but the prices were quite steep. Something 400 or under for a simple 60 minute massage would be preferred... TIA! Talise at Al Qasr perhaps Lovely atmosphere but the massage I got there was terrible.

OP: I also have tried Sugar Daddy's and hated them. And I'm definitely not a fondant person. The best red velvet I've ever had is at Project Cupcake in the Dubai Mall near to the aquarium. I've also had Kitsch and although the red velvet wasn't quite as good in my opinion, I was pleased with their cupcakes as well.

I stopped at Just Kidding this afternoon and they did have the Houdini Stop as well as a display model of the car seat that we have for DS. The product looks great but because of the thick padding covering the straps on this seat, it makes them too wide for the Houdini Stop product to be fitted over. They had no other option in the store.

The Britax seat was bought in 2006 (and it's bright pink) so I was hoping I could find another way... Not to mention the Opal was not cheap here. :( Most US seats expire 6 years from date of manufacture. :( Please cut the straps on the Britax and put it in the garbage. No longer safe. I've heard of people buttoning a shirt OVER the car seat straps to keep their kid in. Not sure your DS's maturity level (mine wasn't great at only 2), but if you told him you'd pull over and go nowhere until he gets back in his seat properly would it have an impact? You'd have to be very consistent and plan trips accordingly. I will throw the seat out, thanks Meagle. And thanks for the idea on buttoning a shirt over the straps. I'm going to give that a try next car trip! He's only just turned 2 so I will tell him to sit back and put his arms in and he just shouts "NO!" from the backseat. lol

Has the Britax seat expired? If not, can't he use that? I google image searched your car seat and see how even with tight straps a child could easily get out of those straps. Seems like a really poor design for a toddler. :( Yes, I agree, it is a poor design. It seems as all the Britax or Maxi Cosi seats from the UK don't have chest clips. I wonder why that is.

I think this is what some people have recommended on here previously. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Houdini-Stop-Houdini1/dp/B0044VUXGW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381405846&sr=8-1&keywords=car+seat+safety+clip Thanks for this. The chest clip from the other seat works the same way. I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get the 2nd set of straps off to slide the clip on. The Britax seat was bought in 2006 (and it's bright pink) so I was hoping I could find another way... Not to mention the Opal was not cheap here. :(

I had a similar situation with Choithrams last week. There is one brand of cookie that my DS can have because of food allergies. I don't let him have them very often but they are a nice treat on occasion. They have always been 24 dhs at Choithrams (which is always makes me gulp when I put them in my cart), until last week where they have now jumped up to 36 dhs! I was just home over the summer and bought a couple of boxes for the equivalent of 11dhs each. Greed is right! edited by Kaba on 07/09/2013 edited by Kaba on 07/09/2013

Thanks for your replies. The more I actually consider hiring a maid, the more I think it's definitely not an option. You're right, I would not feel comfortable with someone I barely know watching my children (they are 21 months & 7 yrs old). I may have to take them with me. All my friends back home work full time but I know that they'd take time off to help me, I'd just feel awful for asking them to do it.

If cost isn't that much of a concern I was just looking at some beautiful ones, in all different colors and sizes, with a matching shirt at Pitter Patter Dubai Mall (level 2 near Mothercare). I think the sets were just under 500dhs (www.pitterpatter.ae). I also just came across the tutu skirts alone on Mumzworld.com. I have bought a few different times from them, you can order online and they deliver to your home. Good luck!

I remember first arriving at the old airport when we came to visit. It was like stepping into another world with the sights, sounds, and the overwhelming smell of incense. My DD is one of the youngest in her class, starting school here when she was still 3. I definitely feel she is at a disadvantage. She has just started to learn to read but is behind a lot of other children in her class and that is affecting her self esteem. I also feel like she is not as mature as many her classmates and can sometimes have her feelings easily hurt. At such a young age, a year is a huge difference. If I had it to do over again I would have kept her home an extra year. We're hoping to transfer schools this year, to a different curriculum so that she's at what we feel is the the right age/grade level. edited by Kaba on 22/03/2013

I live in Umm Sequiem 2 and often see this monkey on a lead. I don't think it is a baboon, but either way it shouldn't be on a lead living in a residential area. Feel sad for it. Why feel sad? At least they are looking after it. I feel sad for it as well. It's a wild animal and should be in its natural habitat not walked around on a lead. It's disgusting what people do for a status symbol.
