A proper English Chinese takeaway. I know it has as much resemblance to proper Chinese food as I do to a 6 foot tall size 0 model, but I love it. Chips and BBQ sauce with some chow mien......mmm. That was my second choice, after visiting the UK recently (for the first time in nearly 5 years), the first thing on my agenda was to get a good ol' English Chinese - Special Curry, Chicken Cow Mein, S&S Prawn balls, Egg flied lice and Chips (in a brown paper bag). I have to say it didn't disappoint, I was in seventh heaven. :-)

Someone was selling a pair for AED 750 on Dubizzle a couple of hours ago. Don't know if that's the going rate or not, but if you're really desperate for ticks, then you might be in luck still.

Very conflicting stories and I'm confused, in one thread you are quoting YOUR landlord and speaking about going to the rent committee. But now you are saying you are not renting, so which is it and if you are not renting, then why would you need to visit the rent committee? It doesn't make sense. sorry English is not my mother tongue. The contract is on my name. Maybe the better word is renting out rooms!? So if you have a contract in your name, then you are renting (or a tenant). However, renting out rooms (or sub-letting as it's known) is illegal. Which takes us back to the point everyone has been saying, your contract will (one would imagine) be null and void. You did say it was worthwhile visiting the rent committee though, so please do tell us all the outcome, as if it was in your favour, it flies in the face of what the laws here say and therefore we would be more than interested to know.

My understanding, judging by your previous post, is that you are sharing a villa, which is illegal and hence asked to leave at the earliest. I would say that as you are sharing a villa illegally, your contract is null and void anyway. You have been given lots of good advice from other posters on here to give it up and find yourself somewhere on your own, where you are living within the law and then you will have every leg to stand on when you have a legal contract. I hope that makes it clear for you and Good Luck.

Agree Sarahlou - it has all the makings of a great venue and even won World's Best Bar back in 2008 time. It;s on the beach, there is a DJ, multiple levels, nice cocktails, good music, but the crowd it attracts is just manky. No other word! My new fave is the Jetty, like an upscale Barasti :) Love the Jetty, nice and chilled, beautiful setting and the tapas is fab and really good value. In fact the O&O is great for not ripping you off compared to a lot of places, their F&B prices are actually quite reasonable. It's my fave place :-)

Agree, it was awful - bad service, dreadful overpriced food and full of people wanting to get smashed at 9am as they serve alcohol. Try More Cafe, Paul, Shakespeares, or Yacht Club for a nice brekkie. Paul is my fave - their almond croissants are to die. If you're (or maybe DH) hankering after a full English, I can second one of DB's recommendations, which is the Yacht Club (Dubai Marina). Saying that, if you're from where your name suggests, then perhaps not the Full English, but their Eggs Benedict are also yummy.

Thanks SalsB! Anyone else, had any experience of the fee paid for a parking spot? thanks For the DMCC unallocated spots, our building management quoted AED 6,000 per annum and for spaces of allocated parking underneath your own building, this is determined by the Management Co. of the building and ours charge AED 10,000 per annum.

I flew with them a couple of weeks ago and to be honest, much of a muchness compared to most other airlines, no issues, well apart from my TV and the chap sitting next to me's TV didn't work, but they moved him to another seat, asked me if I also wanted to move to one that was working, but I figured I'd rather have the extra room and got a bit of sleep instead. As others have pointed out, no alcohol is served, wasn't an issue for me, but I did notice as I was leaving the plane, lots of seats with empty bottles of booze left behind, so they do let you take your own. They're cheaper, so if you're looking for a more economical option, I would recommend them.

Is anyone working for Unilever or knows anyone working for them? How big are the chances that you can develop within the company? Are salary reviews standard and are they done if you perform well? What about bonuses? And and and... Thanks! Someone asked about these guys last week use the search post above If you have an interview there why not ask that at the interview as part of your questions If my memory serves me correctly, it was the same poster who asked. Lovedubai, as Sarahlou says, ask them the questions at interview, or if you can't wait that long, send them an e-mail and ask directly, it can't do any harm if you're far enough down the process with them I'm sure.

Just to second the feedback, I order a LOT from Net-a-porter, at least once a month and think it is one of the best sites for on-line shopping. They are very quick, only last week I ordered items at 3.30pm tuesday and the items arrived at 3.30pm Thursday, 48 hours turnaround. I have never been charged additional duty (as this I think is built into the price). I've not used their returns yet, so can't comment, however, when they have messed up (only once in the gazillion times I've used them), they gave me credit on my account as compensation. In addition, if you want to buy for DH/OH, their mens site mrporter.com is good too. Another good on-line site I've just discovered and used very recently is jcrew.com, again, very quick turnaround time and delivers directly to UAE from the US. Happy Shopping :-)

I get cash once a year. The company look at the cost of a flight back to London with Emirates and then pay that in June. Quite similar to my company. Upon joining we are asked what is your 'home' airport and on the anniversary of your joining date, we are paid the equivalent 'average' price of a flight to that airport into our accounts. The company sets the 'average' price at the start of each calendar year. I'm not married so only have one flight paid, however if I was married, I would also get the same equivalent for hubby too.

I only buy skinless, boneless chicken breast and have never had trouble finding it in any grocery shop; Waitrose, Spinney's, Hyperpanda, C4, Geant, Al Maya, even the small, "express" local supermarkets where I live sell it. You should be able to find it quite easily, but good luck anyway.

Has anyone ever had anything sent from the UK via this service? I've had 2 items sent and then the tracking says "Delivery Unsuccessful" and when I called the Royal Mail they said all they can see is that it says due to the fact my address is a POBox they cant deliver, addressee advised to collect but then they cant tell me where to collect from and to contact Empost, of course when I try to contact Empost they're very unhelpful too - has anyone had experience of this? It says that the items will be returned to UK if I dont collect but how can I collect if I dont know where from?! Help! TIA It's not Empost, but Emirates Post that receive Royal Mail registered, try calling them on this number, they may be able to help you if you have your RM tracking number: 600 5 99999. Good Luck

thanks. have checked this website, but does not really help. it seems that there a grade classifications for jobs and it helps to know what salary or housing allowance you can ask/except. Please help is anyone knows. It really depends on the company, they will pretty much have their own grading system, depending on the roles and the type of business it is. What may be an 8 in one company may be totally different in another (the company I work for does not have numbers, but grades on letters) and some do not have any grading system at all. It would be better if you were more specific to the position you are being offered, the size of the company and your years of experience, then look at similar positions being advertised to give you a better feel.

Hi there, Sorry to hijack but we are going through something similar but just wanted advice please. Our LL told us he had sold the apartment and gave us new LL's name, number and email and advised us we had to be out at the end of our lease (May). Our lease is not a Non Renewable lease and we know about the 12 months notice etc. we in fact believe the apt hasn't been sold as we have googled new LL and we think he's a mate/colleague of our current LL. Our problem is - after the first years lease we renewed by email (been here 3 yrs), saying we renew as per terms and conditions of lease. So in effect we only have a blue lease (standard agent) for the first year and for the subsequent 2 years, emails stating a continuation under same t&c. We have gone to RERA and in typical Dubai style, one person told us we are in the right and can't be kicked out while another said the opposite. Anyone have any advice? Known of similar circumstances? Thank you, Curly If your lease says Non Renewable then unfortunately you are not entitled to the 12 months notice period. Also each consecutive year you stay in a villa/flat you need to get a contract drawn up and register it. The email continuation is not enough. Curly said that the lease was [b'>not [/b'>a non-renewable lease. But, if a new contract hasn't been signed each year, then is it taken as rolling over, or there is no contract? That's a tricky one, maybe you should try rent committee instead of RERA. Sorry can't be of any help :-(

As soon as you have your residency you MUST apply for a UAE licence otherwise you are driving illegally. as long as you take the correct documents you can have the licence issued on the day you apply. Until you have residency you can only drive a lease car and the hire company will want your UK licence. They will chase you every week or so for your UAE licence which technically you should get immediately you get your residency. I am not driving so not illegal. What documents do I need? Your driving licence from your home country (including paper counterpart), your passport with residency visa, passport photo's and Emirates ID (not sure if this is needed as they didn't exist when I transferred to a Dubai licence). edited by Kezzler on 18/03/2013

Happy Birthday Forty_Winks. I haven't eaten at Shimmers, but it is a nice setting. If you are after somewhere 'special' to eat, personally I wouldn't recommend The Wharf, it's quite 'pubby', a bit like a Wetherspoons in the UK, good for families, but doesn't have a wow factor, IMO. However, there are some lovely restaurants in the whole area of the Madinat with good views of the Burj. Pierchic on the Al Qasr side is quite special. For drink pre or post, The Agency has a terrace outside with views of the Burj Al Arab too. Alternatively, why not book an Afternoon champagne tea actually at the Burj, I've heard it's wonderful - well ladies on here have recommended it and my brother did it last year and said it was fantastic. Whatever you end up doing, I hope you have a truly lovely time.

It's true, Saffron is rowdy, but as long as you take it with a pinch of salt, it is highly amusing watching the transation from sober - merry - p****d - absolutely falling down hammered, worth it for the laugh I think. Not rowdy and similar to the food at Grand Grill is Toro Toro and they do serve vodka (or they did - I went a year ago though, so not sure if it's still the same offer). Have fun wherever you end up.

I like the sound of this, I am just about prepared to brush hair and change from PJ's and no more The last 2 times i have been to Saffron there has been a punch up and chavvy Brits drunk and disorderly ( I am from the UK) horrid place but nice food Never seen a punch up, but we don't hang around, we're always out the door at 4 to beat the taxi rush :-) As for Chavvy Brits drunk (I'm from the UK too), to be honest, I think I've seen that in all brunches I've been to (aside from Traiteur, but that is quite formal), as long as I distance myself from that type of crowd, then I'm happy. For me , I love the music there, 70's & 80's disco largely, which is perfect.

Saffron at Atlantis is good fun, very very lively - I'm not usually a fan of the 'big' brunch crowd, but find the food quite good and I don't have to trawl miles to get it, the music is fab and as I said, very lively indeed. There's a real mix of dress, from shorts and flip flops to the glammest of the glam (we're off there tomorrow and I shall be erring to the latter dress code ;-) ). And, you can get any drink just about, except champers, but the sparkly is ok.

Unfortunately, it does say: "Renewal of Contract is at the discretion of the landlord". And "The Contract is valid up to the end of the specified period after which date it is considered null and void". Looks like we're stuffed :-( All contracts say this. Unless your contract is a non-renewable one, which I think is stated in the title heading as 'Non-Renewable', then the LL has to give you 12 months notice if you are not in agreement.

I may be wrong in this and there are HR professional ladies on here that can probably advise better, however, my understanding was that unless you've been with a company for 12 months, you don't really have many rights. I'm happy to be told otherwise for your sake though. You should probably check your contract first.

So, does anybody know how much he can raise the rent by? I keep looking at the RERA Rent Calculator, but they haven't added the Springs yet. Springs is there, in the first drop-down box that says "Main Area", you need to put in Freehold, then Springs is listed as an option in the "Area" drop down box beneath "Property Type".
