Sorry SunDevil, having worked in the Automotive industry for many years, with 5 of those here in the UAE, I can say that vehicles manufactured for sale in the Gulf are built with different specification to European, most notably AC as European standard is not sufficient to cope. If vehicles are imported to the UAE for sale, they have to pass a homologation test to Gulf standard spec, if they don't pass the standards set, they cannot be sold. However, you can import vehicles for your own personal use and that is where you have been lucky that yours seem to have coped well, however, you cannot sell them without the correct homologation certificate. As for tyres, again, European standard tyres are manufactured differently to Gulf standard. Road temperatures here can reach 70 degrees Celsius in the summer months and therefore the pressure on tyres in these temps dramatically increases and thus increases the risk of blow-outs. Indeed, last year a law was introduced whereby retailers are no longer allowed to sell European spec tyres due to the increased safety risk and anyone caught selling European standard tyres will be subject to huge fines.

Whilst your steering wheel may be located on the correct side for the UAE (ie left), unless the car has also been built to Gulf spec, you may have trouble getting it through testing here. There are major differences, AC being the most important, European spec vehicles do not have strong enough AC systems to cope with the summer heat. There are other differences too in the spec and unless you have them amended to Gulf standard, as I mentioned before, you may not get through the RTA vehicle test, which you have to do every year. I would recommend you selling your car back in the UK and buying a vehicle here. HTH.

Done the Imperium brunch a few times too and enjoyed it every time. There's a choice of both a la carte and buffet, I haven't tried the a la carte as Mushy has, but the buffet food is really quite good for a brunch, the beef Wellington is yummy. I'd choose Imperium over Al Qasr, as I found that one too sprawling and I don't want to walk miles to feed myself, I prefer something a little more compact in terms of food layout and Zabeel gets this just right. HTH and Enjoy.

I Second the Shangri-La, lovely hotel, albeit Bar Al Jissah is where I stayed recently and it isn't adults only, the adults only is called Al Husn. Bar Al Jissah is the nicer of the 2 'family' hotels, with fewer kids. Can also recommend The Chedi, gorgeous. Have a fab stay, wherever you decide to go.

It's almost equidistant between Noor Islamic Bank (close to Umm Al Sheif) and First Gulf Bank (Gold & Diamond Park). I would say probably a good 15 mins or more from each. If you look at Google Maps, Jones is in between Al Manara and Al Thanya and will show both stations in relation to this. HTH.

Hi SweetSugar Whilst I don't drive these myself, I do have friends who have Armada and Durango. The Armada, whilst only being a couple of years old and doing limited mileage has recently had to have its engine replaced at a cost of AED 60,000, not a happy time for my pal. The Durango another pal has and breaks down constantly. Now it could be that they both got a couple of lemons/friday afternoon cars, but I wouldn't want to take the risk. Toyota has a reputation for reliability and it also maintains excellent residual values, so it might be worth a look at Prado or Landcruiser. HTH.

You're lucky your company allow you to take 11 separate instances of leave in such a short space of time. Our company rules allow for 2 days sick without a doctors note, but this is on condition that such occurrences don't exceed more than 5 days a year, otherwise, the chop. Fair enough I think, as I would be worried about the commitment of a person who feels it's ok to take so many individual days as sick, unless of course there is a medical condition that can be backed up with a doctors certificate. I have to agree with Here comes the sun, it's not an entitlement and they probably think you are taking the yellow stuff. not more the 5 sick days a year is shocking... some people are just prone to fall ill more then another... as long as you provide a sick note it should be fine... and as per the new ruling (2 years now) all sick leaves are issued but Dubai Health Authority so there can be no hanky panky business plus it cost 50 bucks to get this.... Perhaps I didn't explain correctly. I didn't mean we can't have more than 5 sick days a year, we're allowed a lot more than that [b'>provided [/b'>there's a sick note. It's not more than 5 days [b'>without [/b'>a sick note (5 instances of 1 day or 2 instances of 2 days) - ie, to stop people taking the mick.

Get a glass jar ( empty coffee jar, ikea or Lakeland etc) and fill with their favourite sweets, nuts, candy, bombay mix. Did this last year for my BIL as had about 10dhs left on his budget, got some chilli nuts from C4, put in glass jar and wrote a home made label with " Ring Stingers" on!!! out of all his fancy presents, he said that was his favourite! "Ring Stingers", ha ha ha ha. Thanks Hotpot, good idea and gave me a giggle too.

Hi Dates, I'm not sure if you will get that type of pill or other medication here, however, your best bet would be to visit a few pharmacies and ask if they have the ones you need. From what I've seen, there are quite a lot of pill options. For me, I don't use an alternative as there isn't one, so I buy mine on-line from a UK website and they post them here via Royal Mail Registered, takes between 1 & 3 weeks to arrive, no problems. If you don't have any joy with pharmacies here, the website I use is pharmadoctor dot co dot uk. You do a free on-line consultation (ie, answer a questionnaire) and their resident doc approves it if you have no conflicting medical problems (ie, answer what they want to hear). They allow up to 6 months supply. :)

5 gifts, 200 dhs budget, for a man? Basically, OH hasn't been working for some time and as we'd like to open a few small pressies on Christmas Day, we've given each other the challenge of finding 5 gifts for each other with said budget. I'm stumped! Funny, innovative suggestions from you helpful ladies would be very much appreciated - what do you get for the man who appears to have everything? Thanks in advance and I hope to have a few giggles along the way :) Why not spend the money combined on a nice meal or day out together rather than bits of stuff you don't need? Because we do that every weekend anyway and the small gifts are just a bit of fun on Christmas day. Thanks to all for your suggestions, food for thought and keep 'em coming?

2 beds in JBR go for significantly more than 60k per year, in fact 1 beds you would struggle with that budget. Have a look on Dubizzle for specific areas as a guide to pricing and if your DD finds a deal that is significantly less than the 'average' price, then I 'd tell her to steer clear. Good Luck with the search and wish her a warm welcome to Jooobaaai.

i had a horrible experience at amala's - worst service ever - 45 mins to take our order, 1.5 hours for the food to arrive etc etc, massively disappointed. the arabian courtyard hotel opposite the dubai museum has a great indian restaurant, mumtaz mahal - super food and staff v lovely. http://www.mumtazmahalrestaurant.com/ Absolutely true about Amala. I think i have spent the longest 4 hour dinner in my life there. we were a party of 6. food came late and took for ever to prepare. the waiter was so rude, we felt we were begging for food from his own kitchen! and its not cheap 395 per person if i am not mistaken, no drinks!!! waste of time and money!! i highly recommend Nina at Royal Mirage! amazing food and service Gosh, I am so surprised to hear this about Amala, we've eaten there loads and it's always been fantastic service, fantastic food, can't complain, hence why we keep going back and recommending it. As an aside, it's 285 per person, not 395. I guess with anywhere, it's the luck of the draw. Hey ho.

Amala at the Zabeel Saray is the best Indian I've been to here, it's a set price for all you can eat and it's a la carte. They generally bring you their recommendations, but you can order whatever you like off the menu and if there's anything you find really yummy, they'll bring you more - the scallops are to die for. Indego in Grosvenor House is also really good, for me Ushna pales in comparison to these two, but each to their own. Happy eating :)

Hi I don't live in Ranches...was just in that area.Today I ended up calling the police..but they can't do much without proof of who was responsible. Perhaps I should report to the closest security guards thou just in case they saw anything. btw on Saturday I did clean the egg off the car or so I thought...the egg left a residue that has attached to the paint...it is this residue that I was trying to remove today. Heard vinegar and washing detergent was good but in my case hasn't worked. It might be a respray of bonnet so gutted as car new and respray will prob cost a fortune! Try and get hold of some T-Cut, this removes marks and small scratches, you should be able to get this in ACE or petrol stations, however, make sure you use a very soft cloth. Failing that, you could try Diamondbrite, available in vehicle service centres.

Arrrgh! These weight loss threads claiming to have found a "miracle" solution are just misleading and irritating. I am sure the OP did indeed lose the weight but it is 1) unhealthy and 2) unsustainable. Even if it is a crash diet to get into a dress, people who go on these diets are horrible to be around as they're cranky and starving and you gain more weight once you come off them! Without making a sweeping statement, most people are simply not honest about how much they eat, what they're eating and how little exercise they do. It is really that simple. If you go to the gym 4 - 5 x per week and work out HARD for an hour, as well as eating healthily, you will lose weight. If you go to the gym for 15 mins, do some half hearted rowing or WORSE, walk on the treadmill (thus hogging it from everyone else) in full makeup as I see so many people do, and then get off after barely getting out of breath, you will not lose weight. The people I know who complain about their weight gain are those who make a big deal of eating one healthy meal a week but eat like cr*p the rest of the time, and who don't make any significant lifestyle changes. It takes hard work and dedication and like Daza I get fed up of people who say I am just lucky genetically to be slim when it takes hard work to be in good shape especially mentally to know one's limits in regards to eating and self control. Rant over lol! Couldn't agree with you more DB, really annoys me when people say "ooh you're so lucky", no it's not luck, whilst I was out running 15k's last night, what were you doing? (obviously I don't mean you personally, was paraphrasing). My dad has the perfect statement when it comes to portion control - "this hole" pointing to mouth, "is bigger than this hole" pointing to b*m, "work it out". Hee hee.

The Oman visa costs 50 DHS. If you need a driver there are drivers that charge 150 or 200 per person. There was a thread a few days ago which stated that the renewal of visa in Dubai costs 650 DHS ( or in the region of) and you can only do it once. Hattan/Oman can be done multiple times. Let me know if you need a driver recommended. I thought the visa run to Oman and round was now 200AED it was increased from 50 years ago No it's been reduced again, my OH does it and it's only 50 or 60, but no more than that.

Hi DB, Gosh, I think it's more than generous that you covered everything for your last guest. When you go on holiday, I don't think you would expect anyone to cover all of your costs, would you? I've just had my dad and his OH over and when we dined out (pretty much most of the time), we split the bills 50:50. If I cooked at home, then I covered the cost of the groceries. When visiting attractions, waterparks etc, then everyone pays for themselves. Given that if guests are staying with you they're getting their accommodation for free, thus it's a cheap (in relative terms) holiday from the off, I don't think you need to provide more than that. HTH

For me it depends on the information I want to look for, if it is local, ie restaurants, stores, etc, I use ".ae", as it will bring up information pertinent to this region first. If I want general information, ie facts, news etc, then I use ".co.uk" (being a Brit).

Hi Lizoona If they were sent Royal Mail Registered, it can take some time to clear at this end. When the parcel has, you will usually get a message on RM tracking that it has either been delivered, or that an attempt at delivery has been made. Emirates Post handle the Royal Mail packages at this end, so if you have your RM tracking reference, you can call Emirates Post on 600 5 99999 and they can tell you if they have received it yet or not. They've been pretty helpful with me in the past and even told me which post office the parcel was at. HTH

Thank you for the replies Ladies. Sadly having looked at the 'fancy dress' websites, they're not very helpful. I shall heed your advice and stay away from any blue make up and make sure that the dressing up is limited to removable accessories (just in case we're the only numpties that make an effort). As for Rupert the Bear, I like your thinking, outside of the box, however, I fear in yellow and black checked trousers, red top and yellow scarf, I would probably end up looking like a reject from Dexy's Midnight Runners......... Thanks again for your suggestions.
