Try using any edible oil e.g. Argan oil, virgin coconut oil (available in Organic Shop Dubai Mall), olive oil and almond oil.

I bought all my Philips Avent stuff from Al Qadi in Dubai last year. The telephone number is +971 4 267 2246. I think Al Qadi is the distributor of Philips Avent stuff in UAE so I got 25% discount in every items I bought. I really went to the showroom/stockroom somewhere in Gusais Industrial 3 (so maybe that is also the reason why they gave me discount). But took me a long time to find the exact location. @Kaba - I am sure you can buy as many valves as you want from Al Qadi.

DD also had a very bad constipation, she was 7-8 months old, when we introduced solid food e.g baby cereals and pureed veggies. It came to the point that her a*nus was really sore and in pain when straining. Her pedia prescribed an ointment for her sore a*nus and no carrots and banana. I gave DD pureed ripe papaya, avocado, plums, peaches and apricot and since then no more constipation. Till now pureed fruits (3-5 varieties of fruits high in fiber) is part of her diet.

Hi, I wouldn't worry. DH and i are both Asians and both my little ones are below the who charts but they eat nutritious food very well, snack on fruits and nuts. They are very active and healthy and to me that is a better indication that they are growing well than using any charts as guidelines. I was a horrible eater when I was a kid and the smallest in my class growing up. But I did grow up to 5'8 and turned out to be a national athlete so don't worry too much. You seem like you're doing a great job. Carry on bf if you want and give your little one smaller nutritious meals or snacks throughout the day. Thanks Moiee. I really feel better now.

Kiwi, I think the doctor is not just happy about DD’s growth from 6 months to 9 months. When DD was 6 months old her weight was 6.5 kgs and height was 65 cms and now that she is 9 months her weight is only 7.4 kgs and height is 69 cms. This doctor is DD’s third pedia. Her first pedia left UAE when DD was one month old. I didn’t like the second pedia because she was the one who told me to use CIO method when DD was 2 months old and I couldn’t understand her much because of strong Arabic accent. We like the fourth pedia where we brought DD last December because of bad constipation but it is so hard to get an appointment with him. We only brought DD to the third pedia because we thought she was due for vaccines. I didn’t expect that we’d be told to give her formula. DD has no problem now with constipation. I give DD 3-4 pureed fruits like papaya, avocado, plums, peaches, nectarines and figs (now that they are available) everyday. Thank you for suggesting soaking, boiling and pureeing organic dried fruits. Another new tips from you Kiwi. :) Will try 6 small meals a day. Thank you. edited by Kie on 27/02/2012

Just let her be :-) It sounds like you're doing a great job. If I were you I'd ignore the Doctors advice, bin the formula & carry on breast feeding. Maybe she'd like some finger foods though - buttered toast, rice crackers, big chunks of soft fruit & steamed veg etc. edited by BrownEyedGirl on 26/02/2012 Thank you BrownEyedGirl. She only has one tooth right now but I’l try if she can gum steamed veggies. I don’t want to give her bread yet because of salt.

Just wanted to say Kie I remember your posts when your daughter was a newborn, I'm so pleased to hear that you are now coming out the other side of this. Having had 2 "colic/fussy/high needs" nephews I know that by 4 months they were greatly improved and are both charming, sensitive and extremely intelligent wee boys now. Some babies seem hyper-sensitive to sensory stimulation as newborns, but often once those same babies mature they can use their hyper-awareness to great advantage. Take care Kiwi, I shan't forget you. No word to thank you enough. The tips / info / advice you've shared with me and to the other mothers will be treasured forever. Bless you.

Because of the lack of sleep during the day he is overtired He was fussy today again, not wanting to sleep and crying when I put him down. Whats worse was that he was crying while I was carrying him and walking around too so I didn't know what to do. Tried giving him a pacifier to calm him but he doesn't know how to suck it. . My baby was also like this from 7 to 17 weeks. I just lived with it because I knew I tried everything (except for giving warm water / gripe water, formula, soilid food). I even blamed her silent reflux and colic. She even didnt want to be put in a sling. But now she enjoys when I put her on my Babybjourn baby carrier (this is my bestfriend especially when we are out shopping and she doesnt want to be in her pushchair. Can you try bringing her out even just outside of your villa / building of your flat? I noticed DD stopped crying when I bring her at the groundfloor of our apartment; maybe she liked it because of the different colours, sounds, smells, people, etc. Bought my sling and baby carrier at www.luxelittle.com There is a also Dubai Babywearing http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dubai-Babywearing/120317794705638?sk=wall&filter=12#!/pages/Dubai-Babywearing/120317794705638?sk=wall&filter=12

Oh dear, I feel for you. My DD was not an easy baby from 7 to 17 weeks old. I remember I was crying whilst typing my post here asking for some help/tips. DD was like napping 5-10 mins only even I was already cuddling/rocking her. If I put her on the cot or on our bed she immediately woke up/cried. From 1pm to 10pm she was fussy/crying (sometimes till 1am or 2am). Tried everything but didn’t succeed to prevent her getting overtired. It felt like all she did was crying day and night.  She was 4 ½ weeks old when she learned to self-soothe by sucking her thumb, had to lay down beside her to put her to sleep even just for 20 minutes (3 x a day). At night she slept at 7 but after 20-30 mins, up and crying and took me 2 to 3 hours to put her back to sleep. DD is 8 ½ weeks old now and sleeps on her own. Her morning nap is 45 mins, mid-day nap is 45 mins to 2 hours and afternoon nap is 45 mins. Bedtime is 5:30pm. She’s still doesn’t sleep through the night, I still have to breastfeed her 2-3 times. I find it hard now to BF her during the day because she is so active and easily gets distracted. We have no family or relatives here, no maid, no babysitter and DH is at work from 8am to 7pm. I was quite emotional/sensitive/depress after giving birth but didn’t tell anyone. Told myself “this might be the PND I have read from one of my books’’ but didn’t entertain that “feeling(?)” as I have a baby who needs me. Can’t believe I survived those difficult days and nights. Maybe for my sanity I accepted with all my heart that my baby was not going to be an easy one. Don’t compare your baby with the other babies because you will only get frustrated. When DD was extremely fussy / crying baby my approach was to take a deep breath and no panicking (I know it is easier said than done) before I pick her up because baby can sense mother’s feelings. I have several books where I got some tips about sleeping cues (rubbing her eyes, pulling ears, yawning, etc) and routine. My favourite amongst the books I’ve read is Health Sleep Habits, Happy Child (Marc Weissbluth). I also have Gina Fords books (which I think is not for my DD), Baby Whisperer, Good Night Sleep Tight, Baby Love, Your Fussy Baby and The First Year. And I got good tips from the mothers on this forum. My tips for you: Wake him up at 7am. Feed then go out for 10-15 mins for some fresh air and sunlight. Don’t let him awake for more than 1 hour. Try putting him to sleep before he gets tired. It is really hard to put the baby to sleep when already tired/fussy. Watch his sleeping cues. You may notice he starts to get tired by 7:30am/7:45am so you really have to bring him in his room. Darken the room and start rocking him to sleep or lay down beside him. You really have to be consistent with your DS’s sleeping schedule. DD’s bedtime routine is: 5pm – bath time, feed, burp 5:30pm – I put her on her cot and I have to leave the room in less than 10 seconds so she falls asleep without any drama.  Between 10pm and 11pm – I dreamfeed her Between 1am and 3am – she wakes up for a feed. Between 6:30am and 7am – wake up time. She is my husband’s alarm clock. You may find 5pm/5:30pm is quite early but this works for her. Before her bedtime was 6:30/7pm but didn’t work. And before I forget even if your DS is being difficult, give him more hugs and kisses especially when it is his crying time. Sorry dear if you find my post a bit unstructured. There are so many things to say but I don’t know what/which to write first.

There is no waterbirth in Abu Dhabi only in Al Ain http://www.alaincromwell.com/. Homebirth is illegal. Dr. Elsa Loseva (German ob-gyne)of Al Rawdah German Medical Centre ( http://argmc-uae.com/ )is great. If you really prefer midwife delivery you can go to Corniche Hospital. For the paedias: Dr. Maurice of Cure Diagnotic Centre ( http://cure.ae/doctors.asp ), Dr. Styles of Al Noor Hospital ( http://www.alnoorhospital.com/ ). Mamas and Papas (Al Wahda Mall - Abu Dhabi) for the good quality cots/bedcots. There’s also Mothercare, Next, M&S, ToyRus/BabiesRus in Abu Dhabi. We live in Abu Dhabi but most of baby stuff for our DD was bought in Dubai e.g. JustKidding Dubai http://www.justkidding-me.com/ and Bumblebee in Dubai Mall. Rear / forward facing car seat is not available here yet in UAE so better buy it there; we will be getting one for DD soon from www.carseat.se. Some of the mothers here can’t find a good nappy rash cream like methanium cream and teething gel/powder here so maybe you can include them on your shopping list.

I have been using four different brands of modern cloth nappies on my DD e.g. Tots Bots, Itti Bitti, Baby Cheeks and Bum Genius. I can recommend Tots Bots and Itti Bitti. Unfortunately, Tini-tots is no longer selling Tots Bots here in UAE. I bought my Itti Bitti nappies from Sophia. She is very knowledgeable on different types of nappies (pocket nappies, AIO, SIO, etc). If you want to know more about modern cloth nappies - her email add is [email protected]. Many thanks to you ladies. Yes, I know when she is tired (grumpy, rubbing her eyes and yawning) but they don’t happen at a specific time. Sometimes she can stay awake for 1 to 1.5 hours but sometimes 45 mins only. That’s why when she starts to become grumpy and does not respond to my entertainment I immediately put her to bed. But yes maybe sometimes I put her to bed a bit early that’s why she protests. I avoid rocking her to sleep especially now that she can sleep on her own. I did rock her to sleep, day and night, when she was 7 to 14 weeks old (oh, those days were really hard). DD hates her pram; she only used it when she was less than 1 month old. I put her in her car seat attached in pram base when we go out for a walk in the afternoon and if she is not happy anymore in her car seat I put her in Babybjorn carrier as she loves being in upright position and does not want to miss a thing. Soon she will be in her pushchair. She does not fall asleep when we go out unless she is already 3 to 4 hours awake. Her sleeping habit/routine now is a lot better when she was 7 to 14 weeks old. She did not sleep for more than 20 minutes during her day naps; she got overtired so she was awake crying and screaming till 1,2,3 in the morning. It was really hard for me and DD. It’s only recently when DD responds to DH when he tries to comfort her but before it was like DH was completely stranger for DD. Patting and shushing are not for DD because when I do that to her she smiles, giggles and gets overexcited maybe she thought I am playing with her. So when I put her to bed in less than 10 seconds I must be out of the room otherwise she will cry and protest. I just check her through the baby monitor. Yap, I don’t expect that weaning is the solution. But I hope when the time comes when she can eat 3 times a day she doesn’t need to be BF 3 times during the night. DD is EBF and does not latch for more than 5 minutes. Anyway, I think I have to start implementing fixed nap times. Hope DD cooperates. :)

Once she gets back to sleep at 9pm then no problem anymore, she’ll be sleeping till 1am or 1:30am. We’ll start introducing solid food next week (I must admit I am excited). She sometimes naps (45-to50mins) at 9am, 11am/11:30am, 1pm/1:30pm and 4pm/4:30pm. :) BUT today she was up at 7:40am. I put her to bed at 9am for her first morning nap but was protesting so it was already 10am when she fell asleep but she slept till 11:50am. Then slept (without any drama) at 1:10pm to 2. I put her to bed at 3pm but was protesting and screaming so I picked her up and went to the living room to calm her down; put her back to bed at 3:30pm but no luck – she was protesting. Picked her up and went to the living room again to entertain her and tried at 4 and 4:30 but I didn’t succeed so I told myself I’d give her a bath at 5 to make her bedtime earlier but at 5:10 she was grumpy and really tired so I let her sleep at 5:20 and she woke up at 5:45. I know I should not let her sleep after 4pm but sometimes she is really grumpy and tired between 4:30 to 5 that’s why I let her to have a very short nap. But okay, I’ll try my very best not to let her nap after 4pm. About the fixed nap times - let’s say her day naps are 9am, 12nn and 3pm. When I put her to bed and she is protesting should I pick her up to rock her to sleep just to follow the time and be consistent? When she is having a good day once I put her to bed she will suck her thumb , no crying and in less than 10 mins she is already sleeping. But when she is having a bad day when I put her to bed, she protests and cries and screams if she does not get any attention. So I have no choice but to pick her up and wait till she’s ready to have a nap. I don’t mind helping her to sleep by rocking her but sometimes if I rock her to try to put her to sleep, she’ll be just observing the room so I give up. Bring her in the living room and wait for 10 to 20 mins before I put her to bed; sometimes it works. I notice after 2pm/3pm DD is not so easy to put to sleep that’s why sometimes she gets 5/5:30 nap.

Aha! so it is not only me who has trust issue with the doctors. My husband and I are not so happy when the doctors prescribe so many medicines to a baby under 6 months; it is like they're giving those medicines like candies. Like one of my friends; her 7 months DS has very FEW rash on his face (he is dribbling a lot) and now he has oral meds and topical cream and accdg to the pedia her DS is allergic with so many things. When I told her I educate myself through reading some books, articles from the internet and asking mums from forum she told me I will only get confused. But my point is I bring DD also to the pedia and sometimes go to the other pedia for a second opinion then I make extra effort by reading and asking different mums because of this undescribable feeling that we cannot always trust the doctors.

Giggles, yes, it is more stressful for me than DD; keeps asking DD ''when are you going to poo?'' and she just smile at me. Today is her 4th day not pooping. Will give her a tummy massage tonight. OMG! just reading the subject makes me feel sick. When DD was between 1 to 4 weeks and all she did that time was sleep and sleep; it was very tempting for me to go to the supermarket as there is a shop just beside our building where our flat is. But I told myself fire, earthquakes, etc happens at the time when you least expect it to happen. And even if we have a driver I never dare leaving DD in the car to do a quick shopping.
