Hi ladies, my husband has an opportunity to work in Shenzen, Southern China on the border of Hong Kong. While I know HK very well as I was born + brought up there, I really am clueless about life in Shenzen. Please, if you have ANY information about the city, life there as an Expat, primary schools etc. I would be incredibly grateful if you would spare the time to share it with me! TIA x

Good point Kathyt, yes I forgot, there are Cheeky Monkey Entertainers too that will organise a party but require a venue. The Cheeky Monkeys I was referring to Anouja was Cheeky Monkeys childrens playarea in Al Barsha Mall, ground floor. (Enter in through Gate 1 and turn left). My children really love going there as they have hourly activities which are inclusive of the entrance fee, a nice soft play area that has slides, a trampoline, a ball pit, a mini carousel and a swing and they also have a dancing room which has a climbing wall plus an arts + crafts area with playdough, painting + lego. I think it's great value for money when you compare it to other playcentres here. For parents they have a nice cafe+free wifi. On site is 'Divas' beauty salon, I had my daughers first hair cut done there + was very happy with the results. My DS had his 5th birthday at CMs, which consisted of 1 hour free play + 1 hour in a private party room. We were all having so much fun, practically everyone stayed longer than the 2 hours! As far as I know there are at least 6 different party packages at different prices. I chose the basic package called the 'spectacular' (AED69 per child Sunday through to Wednesday) and AED89 per child if you chose to hold it on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. But they have things like Rock Star parties, sports parties, princess parties etc. Hope this helps :)

I had my DS's birthday party at Cheeky Monkeys this month, he was also turning 5. I was delighted with CM and the two lovely enthusiastic South African party hostesses that seemed to genuinely like and understand the little ones. I thought they were very organised + friendly + most importantly my son had a brilliant time. I felt really relaxed too + loved that I could spend my time with DS, (unlike last year where I tried to do too much). I can highly recommend them. Why not give Cheeky Monkeys a call + ask to speak to the Manager to see what extras they can do for your son to make his party really special? Sorry I've not heard anything about little sparkles so I can't comment.

Hi Sydneygirl Cheeky Monkeys is a fantastic childrens play area, my children + I love it! Bit of gossip, It's actually due to double it's size very soon. It's open all week, Fridays being very popular due to Birthday parties. They are open from 9am (till 10pm I think) fone them to check: Tel: 04 3850875 www.cheekymonkeys.ae. Al Barsha park is also very nice, we go in the mornings comfortably + after 3pm in the afternoon. Lots of shaded parts.

Gummy, I think you have an excellent chance of getting your camera back, especially if it was found by the taxi driver rather than another passenger. Taxi drivers risk a lot if they are dishonest and found out. I had one driver telling me he was imprisoned for 1 month on the suspicion only of having taken an expensive mobile fone that was left in the taxi by a male passenger. The passenger reported the driver who was taken off duty for the whole time of the investigation only for the passenger to find his mobie fone eventually, the fone had never been in the taxi at all! The driver lost months worth of salary + was never reimbursed for his loss. IMHO The vast majority of the drivers are honest men, who would report the lost item to their company + then take the item to the nearest police station. I've found some items of considerable value before in the back of taxis, handed them back to the driver + followed up with the police, so I'm not just guessing on a hunch here. You need to make calls to all the different police stations, if you have an arabic speaker to assist you that'll make life a lot easier, leave your details + you have a good chance of getting it back. Call Deira police station + the one closest to your drop off destination too. Good luck.

Mrs. Biju were you able to find a pest control co. yet? Because I have a voucher for 'Al Madeena Pest Control Services' that I brought from Living Social. Voucher is valid till Nov. 20th. The company came highly recommended to me + their credentials look good. I won't be able to make use of the voucher though. I paid 150aed for it (normally 275aed) but wld sell it for 100aed if you wanted to take it off me? Company's number is 042616032 or email: info@almadeenapestcontrol.com. There's a 6 month warranty on the pest control + it's valid for a villa or an apartment.

Hiya Fiona09, I've been to two 4 year olds Birthdays at both places + preferred Fun Square. I found them both nice, but T&G was cramped with the children + their parents/guardians in there. So many children at the T&G party ended up in tears after a game of musical chairs it is now what I remember most about the party! (Musical chairs is an elimination game whereby the party children must walk around + around a row of chairs and when the music stops each must find a chair to sit. There is always one chair less than the number of children, hence a child gets sent off at each round until left with one winner). The game can be gr8 fun, but as with any of these party games, it is up to the organisers to 'sense' the crowd. At the party I went to at T&G they really failed to do this. Loads of children were being sent off one by one with everyone watching on in floods of tears. The staff should have reacted much quicker to either stop the game or change the rules. It was all kinda embarrassing for the sobbing kiddies and parents! LOL. So I'd go with Fun Square because they have an easy to see into jungle gym area where little ones can burn off excess energy, it's not expensive + the treasure hunt game in the ballpit is fun. You can also bring in your own food/snacks for the adults as I recall.

Hi Ausjor, I used depo for less than a year about 7 years ago + I was also in the 'bad reaction to it' camp. I found myself feeling really low + started to lose hair, slowly at first then really noticeably! I had bald patches all over. Got my full head of hair back eventually thank Goodness, but it took over a year once I'd come off it. A doctor I knew said I should have taken mulitvitamins such as those comprehensive ones including iron you take when pregnant to counter act the side effects.

Really interesting thread + I would be sooo grateful for any further information on this subject. How would a property owner go about applying for this 3 year visa? Anyone have a website or fone number or any idea who I should call for more info.? Anyone applied for one lately? Searching EW for previous threads, I saw a brief newspaper article posted last year saying that the visa length had been extended to 3 years, but there was no other information. Anyone able to shed any light on the subject of property ownership + residence visas? Thanks!

Are you after paints, canvases, brushes etc.? You can find some, not sure about the quality, from some bookstores like Booksplus or Magrudys or upstairs in Lulu Hypermarket. There's also an art supply store (a small one) opposite the old DUCTAC library at MoE. No idea of their prices though. It looked like quality stuff, but when I asked for plaster of paris there I got a blank look. Found the plaster at ACE hardware of all places. Crafty textile bits can be found in the fabric shops close to Satwa Bus Station. If you're after decorating your own greeting cards I saw some paper craft bits at Virgin in MoE. Carrefour stocks canvases, paint brushes and poster/arcylic and watercolour paints as well as crayons, felt tips, pastels and charcoal.

TJC sorry not able to answer your question on where to get eyebrows tatooed, but want to add a question still on the 'eyebrow theme' that maybe would interest you too? I would like to know where ladies go to get their eyebrows hennaed? Would henna work on a very fair skinned person? How long does the dye last? Can anyone recommend a good salon/beautician that can do this?

Gotta be a typo, maybes they meant 185 AED? or 85? I've noticed that many ads under the Babys items or Toys section are the same or practically the same as buying new! I reckon you're just meant to haggle with the owners. Puts me right off though, I'd rather see a more realistic price + get a great bargain if I'm buying second hand.

1. School Bars: They are dried fruit bars without artificial colours or flavours + are great for lunch boxes. 2. Hipp Organic jars of baby puree food, flavour 'cheesy potato + spinach bake' 3. Hipp Organic or Organics mini rice cakes in tomato + pepper or pumpkin + carrot. I've seen the apple ones in Spinneys but want the savoury ones.Sold out at The Greens organic supermarket 4. Heinz Tomato soup, either the regular or organic one 5. Waitrose smooth peanut butter (not at the Springs Spinneys or Waitrose in Dubai Marina Mall) spotted anywhere else? 6. Yeo Valley yoghurt tubes If spotted within the last couple of days please let me know. Thanks :)

Amelia hi, I was there in November with my two children (18 months + just turned 4) + I thought it was exceptionally UNFRIENDLY. There was a bouncy castle on the roof outside but it was hot + boring for little ones. I spent the whole time worried about the buffet set up + what was potentially breakable, wondering what they could eat + how to keep them entertained. Awful. Downstairs there's another bar/restaurant, I can't remember the name, but the new Restaurant Manageress there couldn't tell me if my children had to pay for brunch half price or not. She went off to find out, then came back to say that if I wanted my 18 month old to eat something 'off my plate she would turn her back'! I wasn't looking for special allowances, or freebies on the house, I was merely wanting to know if under 6s had to pay or not. Then I found out from another staff member that yes, little ones could eat for free. There was no lift to come down the stairs, just a sweeping staircase so that was a struggle with my double pushchair! Plus, and this really embarassed me, we pretty much got asked to leave because my son happened to run from one door across an outside patio area + through another glass door to where our table was. He wasn't being naughty and he wasn't being loud, but the Manageress came to tell me that guests outside had complained about the noise! Hmmm, I was sat by the window + I didn't see anyone complain nor did I hear any noise. Her 'polite' way of asking me to leave was to get the waiting staff to clear away our dishes + to ask me if she could send someone to help me up the stairs with the pushchair. Seriously, my son wasn't loud or misbehaving, he was trying to have a bit of fun + explore a bit in a really boring environment. The Manageress was new + obvioulsy over reacted. Don't know if they've improved things since? But I'm never going back. I'm sticking to our family favourite, the ever friendly + welcoming Address Dubai Marina Family Brunch on Saturdays. They have special kiddie food, an indoor bouncy castle, staff that look after my children while I eat + chat, face painting, balloon bending, wii + my two are free to be happy kids.

Hey Cheeky, if you're living in the Marina or there abouts I'd do Tuesday's ladies night at The Address. Free entry to their outdoor venue Shades which is by the pool, free daiquiris all night, shisha + great DJ, snacks etc. They've got heaters + fleecy blankets if it gets chilly which is kinda nice too.

I took my two to Marina Mall yesterday where they got to decorate a pre made ginger bread house with loads of gorgeous colourful candy. We got to keep the big gingerbread house + bring it home! Was absolutely FREE :) My two had 30 minutes to ice + decorate it. I think they ate as many sweeties as went onto the house. Got some gr8 fotos. It's every Friday afternoon courtesy of the Address Dubai Marina. You have to reserve a place by phoning them first though. Also I saw on the notice boards that a giant gingerbread man makes an appearance but you'd have to fone the mall to find out the timings. How old are your children? If they are little they might like the carousel or go carting outside the Marina Mall on the promenade or the train that drives around the Ground Floor with little passengers? Thought it was nice + Christmassy.

I went to Atlanta Vision Clinic for an initial consultation + check up to see if I was a good candidate. Turned out I was a good candidate but didn't want to go with them. Personally I felt rushed there + uncomfortable. They had a special deal on 4950 AED for both eyes inclusive after care for regular Lasik with Groupon, and 300 AED I think for the initial consultation. The vouchers were valid for 6 months. You could 'upgrade' to wavefront for an additional 2,000AED.

We took our DS (4 years old) + our DD (18 months) to both Iceland + Dreamland a couple of weeks ago. Sooooo not impressed with Iceland. They had a big childrens pool area but parents/adults were not allowed to accompany their little ones down any of the slides. Absolutely useless if you have a toddler. The place was seriously EMPTY so you'd think the staff would relax their strict rules just a little, but they were obviously really excited to see people + blow their whistles! Got reprimanded by literally 3 lifeguards for going down a sturdy slide with my DD. It was the only thing there for her. Dreamland was infinitely nicer. The staff were much friendlier too. Both DS + DD had a fantastic time :) We went mid week so lots of loungers + no queues but still enough people there to recreate a nice atmosphere. Plus there's a little petting zoo there which is nice for little ones. Only thing we didn't like about Dreamland were the cold showers, but no big deal. We found Wild Wadi hopeless for little children because it was so hard to get around with a pushchair (which we needed), no loungers or seating + nothing for young toddlers that didn't involve water dropping on their heads. DS loved it though.

Hi Betti. What a lovely caring Mum you are looking to ease your little ones transition into FS1 in September smoothly. 5 hours a day can certainly be a long stretch to expect your child to handle cold turkey so to speak. But Nurseries are much more flexible than schools in that you can easily decide not to take them in on any given day or you can pick up earlier. My DS went to Willow Children's Nursery just off the Al Wasl/Al Manara junction. They were really kind there to the child in their settling in period. They offered my DS 2 open days where he could go in for an hour or so just to get a 'feel' for the environment. When term started I just collected him as early as I wanted or felt he needed the first week + started him on a 4 day week for the first term. They offered a 3, 4 or 5 day week with first pick ups at 12:30pm, then 3pm then 5 or 6pm I can't exactly remember. I know lots of nurseries offer something similar. The Raffles nurseries in the EK Hills are the only ones I know that have a strict 5 day week policy. Don't know where you are based or what religion you are but this may be of interest to you? United Christian Church of Dubai in Jebel Ali offer child care while Mums + Dad's go to church on Fridays (UK Sunday school equivalent) or participate in Bible study groups on Wednesdays. Your son would get to mingle with this peer group for an hour or so away from you. Could be a gentle way to getting used to being without Mum for small stretches of time? Otherwise I know there is a child minding 'care group' in the Springs. Personally I have heard some negative reports of the flexi drop off Oasis Nursery on Palm Jumeirah (but then you always hear good + bad reports about everywhere, so best to check it out for yourself). Take a look at 'Family + Friends' in JBR, it's run by a very sweet UK lady called Joanne. She's enthusiastic + easy going, they have a very flexible play + care program that might work for you + your son? I hope you find the perfect solution + the transition is a happy + exciting one for your little fella. Good luck x

LOL, I love this + all the answers so far, great read :) Alismum, love your logic: "Baroness (for being so stupid, she should have stayed at the drawbridge and faced the consequences of her angry husband). Anyways, here's my take: First + foremost the Madman because he did the actual deed that ended the life of the Baroness. He committed murder, whether or not he was mad is not the point, ultimately it was his choice to actually stab her. But for the rest I can not blame anyone of the them as more guilty than the next, but each of them as a whole working together to create some very unlucky/negative circumstances for whatever their reasons. Thinking about each character individually we don't know enough about them. For instance, the Baron would either be the innocent duped husband working hard to support his beloved wife + just really fearful from a dodgy feeling he has that day that his wife shouldn't leave the castle. He might not even know his Baroness was being unfaithful to him. He tells his wife if she leaves the castle she will be severely punished, but not necessarily by him. Maybes he had a premonition, LOL. But then he could be a nasty piece of working, controlling + bullying? We don't know enough about him to pass judgement. Same for every other character, the friend may think she/he is doing the Baroness a favour to help her grow up + take responsibility for her behaviour? Maybe the Lover can't actually help? Maybe he doesn't have the money to give his Baroness! Maybes the Boatman has been cheated before by other passengers who have promised to pay but didn't and ran away! Maybe he really needs the money to support a family at home? Or maybe he is just greedy + inhumane not to help out the distressed Baroness? The Baroness may be guilty of all manner of sins, but she can't be held accountable for actually killing herself, she didn't commit suicide. She wasn't too clever though! Ideally a friend should have been a true friend, the boatsman should have had compassion, the husband should have communicated how/why he was saying she would be severely punished, the Baroness should either leave the marriage or finish her affair, the Lover should have sold all he owned to get her the 5 pieces of silver she needed ..but ultimately where were the Castle Security guards?! I blame the ineffectual security guards as they obviously weren't doing their job properly by keeping the drawbridge free of knife wielding madmen! LOL. So I've talked myself into it: 1st to blame is still madman, 2nd is Security guards! :)

I will forever sing their praises because they were so so good to me + my family. I felt in safe hands and loved that my husband + toddler were made to feel so welcome too. Hi Kateone, that's really interesting to know. Thanks for taking the time to post this link! So plaster setting, especially larger quantities, can reach dangerous temperatures, thanks for the warning because no I didn't know. I wasn't going to use it for casting molds of hands or feet though, I was hoping to copy one of the art projects I saw on Art Attack (Disney Junior). They make a memory game using small counters made of plaster of paris set in a small plastic cup. Was thinking to let my two paint the counters once they have dried. So still interested in getting my hands on some. Anyone seen any lately?

I brought the 7/1 Wella Koleston colour intense foam Medium Ash Blonde but looking at the ingredients here now I see it does have ammonia as well as hydrogen peroxide. So now I'm nervous because my hair is thin + fine. Don't want to be left with damaged even frizzier hair. The Medium ash blonde colour on the box is very different from the swatch colour on their website. Hmmm, to dye my hair tonight or not to dye my hair tonight. Oh life is full of tricky decisions! ;)
