You could have bought a villa on the Palm for 2.6 million dirhams in 2001 now they are upwards of 15 million dirhams, which is an increase of almost 500%. I look at property as a investment. With all due respect I can't see the North of England or Eastern Europe property prices rising at the same rate as the UAE.

You only need to look at where Dubai was 40 years ago to see buying a property here is a no brainer. You can buy a great property here for far less than you can in the UK and rent it out for far more, yet people are buying in the UK and renting it out for far less........why ??? are you mad?

It was a global recession. Prices dropped in the US,UK everywhere. Dubai recovered a lot faster than the rest of the western world. If Labour gets elected in the next GE wait and see how many businesses move here from the UK. Anyway, we have made money buying and selling the right houses at the right time, I would always encourage people to buy if they can afford to do so.

You dont know the OP situation, maybe she owns her own business, maybe shes loaded. How can you tell others not to buy when you have brought here? I would be kicking myself if I had been renting for the last 10 years. If you don't take educated risks in life you never get anywhere.

Yes I was here in 2002 we bought a house then and sold it in 2009 for a very large profit. I do not see the point in paying rent. I would rather pay off a mortgage, then I am not at the mercy of a greedy landlord. If you can afford to buy, why not. I know people that bought here years ago, they returned to the UK and rent their house out here or they sold it. I also know people that have lived in Dubai for over 10 years paying thousands and thousands in rent when all that money could have gone half way to owning a house outright. If you are only here for a couple of years then renting is obviously a better option.

I see property as a long term investment therefore long term projections for Dubai are good. Dubai is a safe haven in a wealthy region offering stability and a sound banking system.

If you see one you love buy it. Remember location is key to selling a property. Downtown will keep its value because of its location, the marina is a nightmare because of the traffic, the Palm also holds up well. Just be wise where you buy. Renting is dead money why not invest in a property it makes perfect sense to me, I don't understand why people rent.

Joking aside if there was a school that went at the pace of my child rather than the class average I would be a happy Mother. I want my child stretched academically I want my child to have the opportunity to set up young enterprise ideas I want my child to have a detention if he/she fails to attain a grade of B or above in all assessments and tests. I want summer academic classes I want amazing teachers that inspire I want my child to play all sports and have a team for each sport no matter ability level I want my child to be rewarded when he/she does something well I want schools to go back to old fashioned drilling rather than this namby pamby learn through play rubbish I want old fashioned sports days where there are winners and losers.......because guess what thats life edited by ladymary on 09/12/2014

There's no question that eating too many carbohydrates is bad for the body. A poor diet with too much sugary or processed foods can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Too many carbs cause blood sugar levels to spike and then crash. Overeating carbs causes weight gain and can lead to mood swings and even depression. Excessive carbs also bring on a hormone imbalance of insulin and estrogen and progesterone. Carbohydrates primarily react with insulin, the fat-storage hormone whereas proteins have a steadying effect on blood sugar instead of spiking it. The decline in estrogen we experiences in menopause decreases our tolerance for carbohydrates and changes the way our digestion works. It takes a woman four hours to process foods in the digestive tract, up from two hours needed earlier in life. This leads to more carbohydrate absorption, raising the fat storage hormone insulin. Im not saying cut out carbs Its just better to opt for complex carbohydrates, like oats, whole grain breads, bran, beans, legumes and starchy vegetables instead of refined carbohydrates like white breads, crackers, cookies, and white sugar. 1,200 CALORIES a day and 200 minutes of exercise a week is what pre and menopausal women should be aiming for as a general rule. The celebs that go on that jungle programme all lose weight for the 2-3 weeks that they are there because they reduce their food intake, its no different for anyone else the less you eat the more weight you lose,

The chefs create the menus they don't cook the food. I'm quite dubious about school lunches as I feel the catering companies will not be using high quality ingredients as we all know profit comes before anything else.

Im not sure how old you are but as we get older (mid 30s,40s) we need to eat less carbs becauses our bodies produces more estrogen, which creates more fat cells, which make more estrogen that creates more fat cells. Your body stores the fat, usually around the tummy and thigh areas. Perimenopause, or menopause transition, begins several years before menopause. It's the time when the ovaries gradually begin to make less estrogen. It usually starts in a woman's 40s, but can start in her 30s or even earlier.

Prices are increasing everywhere. If you are finding it hard to live in Dubai, you will struggle anywhere in the world. Nonsense, what a silly statement. Not really. I have friends renting apartments struggling to pay bills and buy food they would have the same issue anywhere in the world because they dont earn enough to give them a better standard of living. I have other friends here that live in a five bedroom villa, their children go to private school and they have a okay life here. If they went back to the UK they would move back to a smaller house, their children would go to state school, therefore you are not comparing like for like. I commute between Dubai and the UK. I pay £100 a week opposed to £20 here for petrol. My food bill in the UK is £300 is roughly the same here maybe slightly more. Water and electricity are expensive in Dubai but so is Tax in the UK. So as I said if you find the cost of living tough here you will find it the same when you go anywhere else.

DIETS DONT WORK !! CHANGING EATING HABITS AND LIFESTYLE DO. Agree, that is what 12 hour eating is about, its not a food restricted diet, its a lifestyle change that involves eating your usual foods, preferably healthy balanced meals, in a 12 hour period instead of freely over the day and night. In my case it will only involve having my last meal one hour earlier than usual, hardly a diet! edited by Di@DXB on 05/12/2014 IF YOU CANT PEEL IT AND IF ITS NOT SOLD IN A BUTCHERS YOU SHOULDN'T EAT IT. Opps the caps lock button was stuck. Processed foods, sugar and carbs should be avoided or reduced. Its soooo easy to lose weight if you eat the right foods in the right amounts and go for a walk once a day. Salads and vegetables wont make you put on weight no matter what time you eat them. Bit confused, so I should not eat blueberries, celery or fish or yogurt or cheese or oats, spelt, chia or quinoa because I cannot peel them and they are not sold in a butcher? I was giving a example, of course there are lots of healthy foods not included but as a rule if its not natural or prepared by me I wont eat it. People use diets because they're lazy. Lazy people don't think for themselves We are brainwashed by the media into eating things we know are bad and eating too much of it. It is so simple eat less, move more. Eat things nature intended not ready made junk. Weight loss is a $60 billion-a-year industry globally, who do you think is behind all these fad diets? The food industry giants are. They need us to eat more but as humans we don't need a lot of food so why do we all think we need to eat 3 times a day and snack in between meals, we are all brainwashed. The fact that we can survive just on water for long periods at a time tells you just how little food bodies actually need. People are fat because they eat too much and dont walk or exercise enough how many people complain about the Dubai stone when they first move here. http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/10-best-food-and-health-documentaries/ Watch some of these documentaries hopefully it will help you change the way you look at food

This issues most schools have in the UAE is retaining good staff. A very small percentage of teachers from good independant schools leave the UK to work abroad therefore staff tend to be from the state sector. There is a huge difference between how state and prep schools teach, without having the right staff I cant see how one school differs from another.

Obviously not everyone gets in because they're paying full fees, the grades have to be good too but if a child in the UK has equivalent grades the place will be offered to a full fee paying student. Simples, I remember your DD being quite ill during her IGCSEs and remember you said she only got 1 IGCSE in English, how did she pull it out of the bag for IB/A levels?

Its also much easier to get offers from RG unis from abroad. edited by ladymary on 01/12/2014 Is that so? For what reason do you think that is? Children paying full fees for Uni have been accepted with lower grades than children from the UK with higher grades.

Theres is a tutoring epidemic in the UK therefore boarders can quite easily fall behind day students. Personally I think children need parental guidance the most between the ages of 13-18 so I would keep children at home with me until university. Its also much easier to get offers from RG unis from abroad. Materialism is also rife in the UK I would say the UK is just as multicultural as Dubai. There aren't really any jobs for teens in the UK. Children are too busy studying especially at A level age. edited by ladymary on 01/12/2014

You are ordinarily resident in the UK, and have been for the full three-years before the first day of the academic year Ordinarily resident means that you main home is in the UK, and you are choosing to live in the UK. AND The main reason for you being in the UK was not to receive full-time education This means that for any part of the three years before the first day of the academic year, you must not have been here wholly for education.

Really think long and hard before you buy these as gifts. The older your children get the more time they spend on games. All the boys I know (even as young as 8) want to play killing games like call of duty, which is rated 18. I have banned all games in my house as they are just so addictive.

Its the same in every private school all over the world. You pay to register (admin fees) You pay a deposit, this is returned when you leave the school You pay the fees a term in advance, if you decide to leave mid year you are liable for a term in lieu. Its on every school's terms and conditions. Why dont you just stay at the school until June?
