No, that's not right. Even if it's never taken off standby mode (I never, ever fully turn mine off) the battery shouldn't drain that quickly, not even close. I would definitely take it back to the retailer, if you can, or try to get in touch with Amazon?

I haven't seen the video but have read about it online, I can't say I'm that impressed. Thinner, lighter, faster, better camera...nothing more than what you usually get with an upgraded model. I was expecting a device that would clean the house, look after the kids, and go to work for me... No but seriously, did I miss something? The 4S at least had Siri which was something new, nothing jumps out at me that has the "I need this now" factor. I think they were hoping to get people with the size/screen "redesign". Personally I just got the 4S a couple weeks ago and in no way regret (yet) not holding out for the 5. I've been down the path of buying new products/releases ASAP before and it's usually more trouble than it's worth, with all the unforeseen bugs that inevitably pop up in the first few months. I'll hold out several months or until my Etisalat contract is up and I can get a replacement for free or discounted. In the meantime, I think the nuisance of applications needing to suddenly be re-tooled to fit the new screen, and also having to get converters for all the devices/docks you hook your iPhone or iPod up to, as the input is now smaller, is not worth the trouble.

Wow, it sounds like you might have a faulty battery, if the battery keeps draining that quickly even with wifi off. I definitely see a difference in battery life when I have my wifi on as opposed to off, but still nothing so bad as you say. I too, never turn my Kindle fully off and just keep it in sleep/standby mode, but I still have a few weeks minimum of life in it. I would imagine if you properly turn it off between use (especially if you do not use it every day) that would give you extra battery life, too. I don't know how or if you can replace a battery, sorry.

I personally didn't love the Zabeel Saray brunch, but it does seem like a good one to take parents to. One of my biggest complaints though, was that the music was both awful and very loud. There was palpable relief when the live music act (loungey-type music, which I generally enjoy) took breaks. If it wasn't for the obtrusive music, to be honest I think I'd have a better opinion of it. The Thai Kitchen brunch also in Park Hyatt is nice, especially that time of year if you have a seat outside. Zuma is always my #1, which I think could be a suitable option for parents as well - nice atmosphere but still quite laid back. <em>edited by laurelm on 13/09/2012</em>

I agree, Bentoya is good! I enjoy eating outside there. The variety of options in the toilet always kills me. I don't know the name of the building either, but it's in the back/side of one of the littler, older ones just after Dusit Thani, when you're on SZR going towards Sharjah. There's a Sketchers store in the front side of the building. I agree about Okku, although I only went there once, just after it opened. I wasn't hugely impressed by the food, but I've heard people raving about it recently, so might give it another try.

I've had a handful of keys cut there, no documentation ever requested. I don't recall the cost but I think it was 15 dhs? I certainly don't think more than 25 dhs at worst.

As Marroosh mentioned, you can, but let me just give you a small warning as I got an iPhone and moved from pre-paid to post-paid less than 2 weeks ago and was immediately met with an unwelcome surprise. Firstly, you can only get the max 1GB plan until you've had a post-paid account with a "good record" for a minimum of 6 months. Fair enough. Then I entered Oman for the weekend where I found I had no service whatsoever. No data, no ability to make or receive phone calls, nothing. I expected to at least be able to make/receive phone calls with roaming charges, as I had previously done with me pre-paid sim. Nope. It's important for me that I can use my phone when abroad, and if it is for you too, then you'll need to go to the main etisalat center (in Bur Dubai) and slap down a 2,000 dhs cash deposit to activate your phone to roam (alternatively you can get a bank or company guarantee that they'll pay your outstanding bills should you stop paying, which I don't anticipate is an easy get) and then, before you go abroad, sign up for an hourly/daily/weekly/monthly roaming package ( [url=http://www.etisalat.ae/eportal/en/personal/mobile-int-roaming-packages.html'>link[/url'> ). Maybe that's not a big deal for many people, but it really aggravated me. Had I known that in advance, I probably would have stayed pre-paid. My stupid mistake for not explicitly asking when I migrated my number to post-paid, though, I should have known better.

I do! At least, I'm quite sure it's the 9800, I'll double-check when I get home. I think it's fine - just that the screen/display is broken, from when it...uh...[i'>accidentally[/i'> fell out of my hand and hit the ground. I know it still turns on, and I was able to hook it up to my computer and pull off my photos after the incident, so I would say the internal hardware's still working. It's no use to me now as-is, I'm happy to give you what you need.

I use the recipe from a cookbook called "The Food of India" - generally speaking I like the recipes in this book. The butter chicken recipe can be found here: [url=http://books.google.ae/books?id=H5n5Tc3lb4oC&pg=PA94&lpg=PA94&dq=%22the+food+of+india%22+butter+chicken&source=bl&ots=Q0DVRENyqB&sig=6GGsPM-Razt648EXSYjPKeWfYvM&hl=en#v=onepage&q=%22the%20food%20of%20india%22%20butter%20chicken&f=false'>link[/url'>

Trilogy in Madinat usually has some decent events on the weekend, particularly if you like EDM. I generally don't much care for the type of EDM DJs brought into Dubai, but I still have a good time getting down at Trilogy. Plus, with the location, you have a good choice of dinner options and other places to have fun. On that note, while I met most of my friends back home through the clubbing/dance scene, I haven't had as much luck meeting people here in that way. The vibe is very different. This year for the weekends, I'm really looking forward to polo season starting back up and spending Friday afternoons on the lawn having some fun. If you find anything interesting or promising, I'd love to hear!

I can do better than that laurelm...my company didn't confirm that last Eid holiday days at all!!! We had to 'assume' that we had 3 days off. Wow! I'm sorry to hear that, but glad I'm not the only one! The icing on the cake of my situation was that on Monday evening when they confirmed our time off (that, like you, I had been taking off previously under an assumption), I was also told I had Tuesday off. Then when I didn't show up on Tuesday, I got a call at 10am asking why I wasn't in the office!

I need to book something quickly and something thats suitable for a 6 week old. Its rather annoying that none of us have the confirmed dates off yet though. Generally, the government and most companies don't confirm Eid holidays off anywhere from a day to a week in advance. It's frustrating but can't really do anything about it. Last Eid, my company didn't confirm what days I had off until we were already 1.5 days into Eid. Thanks, work. I don't think that sort of thing is usual for most companies, though.

When I'm in the mood for local, cheap & beachy, I usually head to Sandy Beach Motel on Al Aqah beach in Fujairah. The drive should take you no more than 1.5 hours, depending on where in Dubai you're located (the new road through the mountains has certainly has made the drive snappier). Fujairah is absolutely stunning, I'd recommend it for anything. Mind you SBM is far from luxury, but I really like it because of the option to rent a beach chalet with BBQ. Additionally its location on the beach is spitting distance from Snoopy Island (great place to snorkel, dive, kayak). If you want something more upscale, or don't see the ability to BBQ as a huge plus, just down the beach are a few more hotels such as Le Meridien, Rotana, and Miramar. Whatever you decide, I'd advise you to book very soon. Eid weekends are highly anticipated and places fill up well in advance. Last year I tried to get a chalet in Sandy Beach Motel over Eid Al Adha a good 2 months in advance, but they were already booked up.

Have you tried Etisalat itself? DH got good packages for himself and me including iPhones Yes, I just snagged one from Etisalat today after signing up for a new plan. However, if you want a 32 or 64GB version (as I did), no can do. All they have left in any of their stock in Dubai is the 16GB. Or so they told me.

Yes that's true-ish about Jordan. Petra is quite an activity, but the Dead Sea would be more relaxing. I'm not the type of person who likes to be inactive when I get away, but I spent a week in Varkala doing *nothing* and I loved it. I never even intended to stay there for more than a few days - never been so content to just laze!

I second Jordan! I think I was only there for 4 nights, and was enough to check out both the Dead Sea & Petra (the more time in Petra the better, though). If you're thinking Kerala, Fort Cochin is lovely. A boutique hotel called Malabar House is particularly nice. I also loved Varkala in Kerala. Maybe a 2 hours drive north from Trivandrum airport. The scene is quite backpacker (which I like, although I know it's not for everyone) particularly on the main/north cliff, but there are some more cosmopolitan places on the quieter south cliff.

Haha, a stowaway! Even if you're not getting ripped off, the Omani taxis are still more expensive than the UAE ones, I guess partly because many aren't driven by expats, but Omanis. As there is no meter running, it's wise to discuss and agree on a price before you actually let the taxi start driving. I think if you speak with your hotel they can probably give you an idea of what a proper amount to pay for wherever you're going is. But yes it will be more pricey than your UAE taxi service, unless you find a way to rip them off! hah Long weekends in Oman are great! We like to drive to Muscat, basically hugging the coastline all the way down (4-5 hour drive). In Muscat there are loads of options for hotels, but my favorite place to stay is is The Chedi (going back in a couple weeks!). It's 5* all the way. I've never stayed at the Shangri-la but have heard it's nice (looks nice - I've walked the grounds). There are also less luxe options in the Hyatt, Crown Plaza, Intercon etc, and from what I've seen they're all perfectly good. To entertain yourself, if you're a diver you can head down to the diving center next to the Shangri-La, and if not the old souq and corniche are great to stroll around. In the evenings I like to head up to Mumtaz Mahal for curry, and a few drinks at Left Bank - there's a nice up there atop the hill. I've also had local fishermen take me out and drop me at unreachable coves for a bit for some peaceful beach time...I can't recall exactly where I've done this from, but in/around the area by the Shangri-La. On the way back into the UAE, it's nice to drive inland, to Nizwa, a properly old town that used to be Oman's capital, which has a fantastic fort and souq. The hotel accommodation isn't much to speak of but it's passable. You can continue driving through the Hajjar mountains to get back to the UAE, and along the way if you have a 4x4, you can take some detours and head into some wadis or up some peaks. I think for the latter a 4x4 isn't really even necessary as there are decent roads. You sound like an expert road tripper!!! :) Maybe novices like us should just hide in the back of ur car and tag along hehehehe This might sound dumb but here goes - are there ample cheap national taxis in Oman like there is in Dubai?

You're welcome! To be more specific, it is the Organic Foods & Cafe in the Emaar Business Park building 2 on SZR next to The Greens. There is another of these markets in Dubai Mall, but I haven't checked there for the melatonin. Nod nod - I asked a doctor and pharmacist last week about it. Current status is - melatonin is not on the banned/controlled/restricted list. However, pharmacies/chemists have been officially stopped from stocking pure melatonin only tablets. So in the chemists you can now find sleep assist products - which do often contain varying amounts of melatonin but also will most likely have a heap of other herbal or vitamin components etc crammed into the tablets. Is the Organic Market a shopping center in the Greens suburb? Ugh at the price. I paid 50dirhams for twenty sleep assist tablets &lt;3mg melatonin each&gt;. Which i still dropped my jaw at considering how dirt cheap this stuff is everywhere else. Thanks heaps for your help. The nutrition/vitamin section of the Organic market by the Greens has bottles of it, just got some a couple weeks ago there. I think it's 60 tabs for 140 dhs? I went around a lot of places asking for them (pharmacies, nutrition shops...), and was told they are no longer banned and readily available in many locations, all the same I had trouble finally tracking down a bottle.

I always have to beg and plead up to the last minute for an answer (and if I don't ask, no holiday will be offered). If Eid starts on Saturday though, I would be not at all surprised if I only got Sunday off.

Were staying in dubai, so very interested if anyone is recommending things to do. Can anyone recommend one of the musandam trips ?? Not sure if its too hot though still? I've done the Musandam trip in the mid-summer and it was fine. Nice breeze, refreshing dips in the water, and far less boats around so much more peaceful in general (I've done it in the winter as well, and it was just too busy, I preferred the summer experience). However, with it being Eid, it might be rammed with people. I can't remember who exactly I booked through, but their office was located in the Golden Tulip hotel there.

Been to Wengen (Jungfrau region) in Switzerland the past 2 seasons, where you can access a few different ski area all via train or gondola. Lovely and easy to access from Geneva via train or bus. (Note that I've never actually come from Geneva, only Zurich, but know others who have and they have never needed to get in a car.) Plus, once you get to Wengen, there are no cars allowed/it's inaccessible to cars so absolutely no need to drive whatsoever. An alternate location to stay in the same area would be Grindelwald. The 2 cons I personally have against Wengen (really, really lovely though it may be) are: 1. Not so great for people looking to party, or for a more vibrant/young atmosphere. 2. I feel like the resort/slopes are definitely more skier friendly than snowboarder friendly. The slopes are long (which I love) but there are some flat-ish areas throughout that are a snowboarder's nightmare (you just need to learn to avoid them or get up to a reckless level of speed in anticipation of them to pass through these areas without stopping). My skier SO has to push me along at times which gets frustrating fast. Step-in snowboard bindings are a worthwhile Wengen investment.

Flying is nicer if for no other reason than going through the border in your car is definitely a bigger nuisance than simply going through customs at the airport. However if you have to drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi just to catch/return from the flight, I don't know...how much do you enjoy/dislike long car rides? If you drive...we usually go to the Khor Kalba border crossing in Fujairah as it tends to be less busy than the other ones. Went to the Hatta crossing once over an Eid holiday and it was just a sea of people - literally hundreds. Got out of there ASAP and made for Kalba where there were about 5 cars, max. It's kind of a boring drive (go straight...forever), so for a change it's nice to drive back via Nizwa (making for the Al Ain - Buraimi? - border crossing) and having an explore around that old city and the mountains and wadis in that area. There are some really beautiful places out there that make the drive really enjoyable and totally worth it. Planning to make another Dubai-Muscat drive in September and am looking forward to it.

The food was decent not fantastic, but more than anything I guess the atmosphere didn't really do it for me. And the music was SO. LOUD. I wouldn't return. Nowadays, I find my taxis usually come early (which I shouldn't get annoyed about but it really drives me nuts all the same) - especially when I book an early morning trip to the airport. I always book in advance. Maybe I've just been lucky though? All in all, I find the current taxi situation here MUCH more reliable than it was 3-4 years ago. Trying to get them to send a van is another story altogether though - good luck.

ladies i think I am getting old and cranky as I find some of the shops play music so loudly that I cant hear myself think or shop so I huff puff and walk out. No, I don't think you're cranky - I still go clubbing and regularly enjoy a bit of loud music at home and in the car - but I cannot agree more with this comment. I somewhat recently walked into an A&F-esque shop and the music was just that - so loud I couldn't even concentrate on anything else, I couldn't get out fast enough. Absurd! It also doesn't help I don't tolerate the junk on the radio (and I've never heard of any of the songs mentioned below); haven't really listed to radio music since the 90s, not that I liked it then either. On the inappropriate music note, I was walking through a kid's area in MoE one day, and heard them playing a song (really loudly, naturally) that included f*** in the lyrics, which weren't edited out in any way! I was shocked! Public places - especially geared towards children - wouldn't get away with that back home, and I would have thought that places here would be doubly cautious about the content in the music being played. But, guess not? <em>edited by laurelm on 01/08/2012</em>

You only need to go through the attestation of the tenancy contract (etc) if you want to sponsor your family, as a single person it isn't (currently) necessary, your visa is done by your company and they don't require a tenancy contract. Ah, I do hope that is the case! I'm in the same position as greengoddess and have been hunting for a new job recently, but have been really stressing out at the thought of trying to get myself onto a tenancy contract when/if I need to get a new visa.

We really liked Burger Fuel in JBR for the same reasons. I wish they delivered. It might be tricky to find delivery from some places that normally do during Ramadan. We made our own last night; my husband found a great blog called Burger Lab and he did well--best ones I have had in ages! BurgerFuel do deliver !! doh! lol serves me right for not searching well enough. I have never tried GBK, either, might be worth a check. Some of my American buddies swear by the Shake Shack in MOE but I can only eat burgers jut so often. too many to try! Shake Shack is pretty good - similar to Fat Burger, IMO, if you've tried them. Shake Shack's cheese fries are ridiculously yummy, though! Oh no, now I want.

I'm from PA, never lived in any other state! Ironically, despite moving to the other side of the world, never made it around America much outside of the east coast. im from PA to.. and never lived anywhere else .. only stayed on east cost then moved here 3 years ago :) What part of Pa you from ? Hey yea....Pittsburgh here though Michigan for the summer. I'm born & raised Pittsburgh here, went to college near Erie and after college/before Dubai lived in Philadelphia (where I really consider "home" in PA) for about 4+ years. Going back for a quickie to Pitts & NYC this October and SO looking forward to some autumn weather and Halloween fun (& Primanti's!!!!)! As for people not hearing of this place, OMG when I first moved here 4 years ago, really truly (western) PA people had not heard of it. For the longest time my mom would come across people (as did I) who would correct her for mispronouncing "DuBois", PA as most people assumed that's where she meant I was moving! Hah, not quite... People don't seem as clueless about Dubai anymore though.

Johnny Rockets is good for a 'classic', but a little bit on the exxy side. FatBurger isn't too bad either, not sure if they deliver but there are outlets is both MOE and Dubai Mall. The satff sing your order when you're at the counter :) And GBK is great, I love they have 'different' burgers. For the Aussies/Kiwis, they do a Kiwiburger with avo etc Love Fat Burger! They do deliver to certain areas - I know I've gotten them to deliver in Downtown Dubai, and also I think I've had them deliver to me in Satwa. There's also an outlet on Beach Road that's open for lunch during Ramadan for take-away (at least it was last year) and quite possibly delivery.

If it's the right season I think the horse racing and polo events are nice outings to do with visitors. And if the guests are staying long enough, usually recommend an overnight trip to Fujairah for a little change of scenery and pace. Might not fit the "tourist" bill, but my guests who aren't into sightseeing or have been here before have enjoyed it.

I'm from PA, never lived in any other state! Ironically, despite moving to the other side of the world, never made it around America much outside of the east coast.

I've been here almost 4 years and have yet to attend an AWA event but truly want to! I also have yet to meet many fellow American women which I'd love to do. I'm back in the US for summer if anyone needs anything from Target ;) edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 23/07/2012 I never heard of AWA before this thread, but I too, have been here for just over 4 years (with extremely rare trips back to the states) and have met so few Americans here, men or women! It's to the point that I think my accent is softening and people are beginning to assume I'm English upon meeting me. It's weird; I'd like to get around more Americans.

I'm pretty sure I saw one at Hyper Panda during a recent fan-shopping expedition. I've also seen those sleek-looking blade-less oscillating tower fans at Galeries Lafayette and Ace, but they cost a small fortune.

My only complaint with SC is that they call me up ALL THE TIME. . They are incompetent to say the least - they still think that i work at company A even though that visa has expired three times over, have given them visas B&C..... sick of telling them so now when they ask i just say yes.... Also i stopped my salary transfer 18 months ago and they still haven't worked it out, even thou i have a salary loan with them.... Bless I've had these problems, too! They're really unbelievably daft! It might be somewhat funny if it were't...my bank.
