Dubai Offshore Sailing Club have a Barasti like area that is great for outdoor parties. You can book it exclusively and it's not too expensive. Depending on what type of party you want there is also a children's play area that keeps the kiddies entertained.

Please, please tell me also. We have lived in Dubai for 22 years and have never had these before. They are really awful, you cannot leave anything down for a second without these little perishers all over everything. There are not the large ants you often get here or the small red one's these ...... where have they come from??

So sad to hear of the loss of your diamond.... Wherever you decide to buy it from it is always better to buy the stone and then have it set, either into your ring or decide on another setting. This way you can see what quality of diamond you are getting whereas if you buy a ring with the diamonds already set then inclusions can be hidden behind prongs and the colour of the diamond can be disguised by the colour gold. Read up first about how to look at the diamond for the C's. Colour, Carat, Clarity, Cut and be sure to use the eyeglass when looking at your diamond. A forum like this is great because you will have the experience of other expat ladies who will be able to give you the 'heads up' on where they go to buy their diamonds. Hope this helps

emlsnre, The gait assessment set up sounds really good. Question: Does the store then suggest what sports shoe is best for you personally or is the store only allowed to suggest their own brands? I've tried Nike, Adidas, Reebok and find that for me Asics are the most supportive and also the most comfortable. Yes, they are expensive but I always wait until the sales and then buy another pair. Will definitely go for the gait assessment though, thanks for the information. Good luck with the 10K. Has anyone tried the Vibran Five fingers?

Because of your operation you are probably feeling low and cannot think outside of the box!! Some suggestions: 1) Supermarkets will deliver if you give them a list by phone. 2) School run - organise by rota of your friends. 3) Washing and cleaning - ask a neighbour if they maid could do a few hours whilst you recuperate - who would say no!! 4) Hubby to bath kids and put to bed and take on that little extra - In times of sickness and in health (where have I heard that!!) As you say you can drive then making snacks and sandwiches would be easy enough, not like cooking a full meal. Good luck and happy recuperating.

Mmmm Prone to huge tantrems without warning If he doesn't get his own way Whilst he is kicking and screaming. He's been sitting in the trolley in the supermarket before, screaming his head off around the fruit and veg if I forget to let him bag or weigh something, kicking his shoes off, throwing things into the trolley! I'm really not surprised you've had many many looks from disgruntled individuals in shops etc whilst this type of thing is happening!! This is clearly a behavior issue, you DS is looking for attention, trying to get his own way and your way of dealing with it is to ignore his behavior. My DD also had temper tantrums at the same age, being a little redhead hers were so bad I actually consulted a professional who advised me to take her out of the situation so she could 'not' get the attention from either myself or (other shoppers). I suppose what is difficult for us 50+ (oldies) is that we don't ever remember children behaving like this when we were young, perhaps it's because we would have received a very sharp telling off. Maybe then we had more to do and were always outside in the fresh air. Maybe today's behavior issues are down to additives in the food children now eat. That's another subject. Yes, children are children..... my granddaughter is 5 and there is no way I would let her scream, yell or behave badly in a public place. I explain to her that there are places she has to be 'soft' and places she can be 'loud'. It works for me...... It is clearly what is acceptable to 'the' individual and their style of parenting. We are not all the same. Perhaps in the future we will be and then when our darling daughters or sons become noisy and disruptive in the supermarket we can just switch them off!! LOL I'll look forward to reading the humour that follows!!

If you are ever over in Dubai there is a shop called: Meeting Love Sports Dance and Leisure Wear Shop 1st Floor, Plam Strip Mall Jumeirah Beach Road, Dubai Phone: 04 345 4563 I think they also have 'online' shopping now but cannot be sure. I have bought all my granddaughters dance wear there. They even have Irish dance shoes!! They seem to stock anything related to dance wear. The second option is to 'Shop and Ship' your items from home. Hope this helps.

I have grandchildren and are one of those 50+ 'oldies' but I would definitely not allow my grandchildren to shriek or squeal or run around in a public place unless it is in a place for children (playpark etc). It is a question of responsible and acceptable behavior on behalf of the parent (or grandparent). To allow anyone to run around in an establishment that caters for food is both irresponsible and dangerous (sorry if you don't want to hear this). I see this so many times here irresponsible parents/minders allowing their children to run around. The waiters carrying food trays don't see children under their feet until they have fallen over them, food is spilt and who is then to blame, the parent or the waiter. Of course we all know who will get the blame. I think parents will always be sensitive as it's their own child but how would they have felt if in the process of running around a hot cup of coffee or tea was spilt over them. Perhaps the establishments need to be more responsible and provide child friendly zones where children can play together without their being a danger to themselves and others, that would be a wonderful solution. I was in a store yesterday and when a young child shrieked at the top of her voice scaring the daylights out of me. I immediately gave the mother 'the look' but didn't say anything and her response...... she just laughed. I suppose for us 'oldies' standards have dropped and it's now considered acceptable behavior to allow children to run around, shriek and scream in public.

We recently had painters to paint our villa exterior. They worked from 07:00 - 11:00 with a small break mid morning of approx. 10 mins. then took their afternoon break and came back at 15:00 until 18:00. I gave them water every day although they seemed to prefer drinking out of the garden tap!! Also, gave them fruit on the occasional days. They were a pleasure to have around, never abused their timing and even carried my shopping in after my weekly supermarket shop. I would suggest finding out their schedule from the company you hired: Start, break, Lunch, finish and then getting them to stick to that routine. It's a job they are getting paid for and they have to be accountable just like the rest of us. We would behave like this at work?? Hope this helps.

This company is used by Dubai offshore sailing club to haul their boats out. Tel: +971-4-8996555, Fax: +971-4-8847919 | Email: [email protected] Do you really need a crane though? Why not call one of the Jacuzzi distributors and see what they can suggest. Crane hire is very expensive and you might find that 4 delivery jacuzzi sales people could do the job just as easily at a lot less cost.

Hello Jellymum, I've just read read your post and how sad. I, too live on a compound and our neighbour recently adopted a rather large dog. He's a real gentle giant but also barks at people when they pass by 'his' gate which has also caused many of the neighbours to complain. When my neighbour told me I told her that 'he's just doing his job'. I am very grateful to have the bark of my neighbours dog as it alerts me to the fact someone is around, especially when I'm on my own and my hubby is working away. His reward: bones from the local supermarket when I go to do my weekly shopping before that I hardly ever used to see my neighbour. I applaud you for being an adoptive mother!!

I have shoulder length hair which is fine and fairly thin. I too have struggled with this problem for years here. My solution is 'not' to put hair up in a pony tail as this leaves a distinct, awful bend in the hair. I use a coloured cotton stretch hairband folded over so you have a double 'o' ring, pull all my hair up as though I'm going to put it in a pony tail, twist the hairband back over the hair pulling through a small loop of hair, tuck in the remaining end piece of hair around the hairband which should now form a similar style to a 'ballet' bun. To keep it in place I then use another coloured hairband again doubled over and place in around the bun. The hairbands can be colour coordinated to match your outifts creating a very chic and elegant look. The plus side is that when you take the hairbands out what you are left with is even gentle waves, like the old Sienna Miller Boho look. It adds volume to thin hair and looks very natural. Hope this helps.

Marks & Spencer: I have found they only go up to an E cup and a 38E wasn't supportive enough for me (probably because I was going for the wrong size) I'm an 34FF by TKD measurements. Debenhams have large sizes in their Gorgeous range but definitely go for a fitting at TKD first. Then when you know your correct size shop around. I have wasted so much time and money buying lingerie sets that are the wrong size and hence not supportive for me. So ladies.... the moral of the story is get yourself measured properly first. The difference really is amazing

Most pet stores will carry these but they are all quite expensive too especially the scratch towers, the last once we purchased cost nearly a thousand Dirhams but 7 years on and our but still loves it. You could also try ACE Hardware they may be a little cheaper, their cat litter is really good as is very economical especially if you buy the large bags. Hope this helps.

If you look directly across from Bab Al Shams resort there is a small lake surrounded by newly planted saplings. You'll find an access track that leads directly to the lake and will find many ducks, geese and migratory birds. Perhaps you could convince your neighbour that it's the right thing to do to let the duck have others to play with!! Good luck

I recently went to Salon Educators in Jumeirah Lake Towers after rading several blogs on this site. Thought it was amazing, very pleased with the cut and colour. The plus side is that it is unisex and sitting in the chair next to me was a chap getting the most incredible mohawk, the stylist was training and I believe the charge is as little as 50 Dhms though this needs verifying depending on who you get to cut and colour.

I have now seen on a regular basis what is now being named as 'Tourist Police' rounding Ibn Batutta Mall. They are pointing people out and writing something down. Not sure if this is a lead up to something, perhaps Ramadan! Also, noticed a lot of media coverage lately regarding this issue. Perhaps, like the I.D. Card issuance they will eventually say 'we notified everyone enough times, in the newspapers and on TV' and now you bear the consequences!! My feelings: I too get very hot in this Dubai summer heat. But what does it take to carry a thin, silk or cotton scarf and casually drape it across shoulders when you're in public place..... very little! This can look very pretty and even liven up an outfit and you will be sending out a message that says 'I am being respectful to your UAE traditions'. In Saudi young expat women came into the Kingdom and decided to wear what they liked ignoring the local customs and traditions, the religious police clamped down and we were all made to wear abayas. There are always some that will spoilt it for others!!

Response to Greenish..... I do agree with your sentiments entirely: 'For me, it's all in the way the dog is raised, so much more so than being about its 'breed'. To answer your questions: My daughter is not a breeder..... she is extremely experienced with dogs and has had her male G.S. for years. Only when her second dog passed away of old age she was approached by the local rescue agency to take a young female G.S. The decision to let her male and new female G.S. mate was decided after lengthy discussions with her local vet who knows both dogs very well. In fact he was the first to book one of the puppies!! The rest of the puppies were booked very quickly by friends and colleagues and only after a severe vetting process involving the whole family (including housemaid) were they allowed to go to their new homes (at no charge). She turned down friends that did not have the relevant experience with dogs or those who didn't have suitable accommodation. If the parent G.S(s) took a dislike to someone then it was immediately a NO. There will be no more puppies, this was to be the G.S. females one and only time to be a mother at the recommendation of their local vet. My daughter repeatedly gets herself into trouble trying to stop the sale of animals in the Kuwait Friday market and did likewise in Plant street in Satwa when she lived here, she is in fact banned from there after nearly getting herself arrested taking photographs!! I know it is exasperating at times, but if someone wants to buy an animal they will from whatever source. We can only give advice and hope that they will act in a responsible manner, read up about the breed, look into all the facts, especially what will happen if they have to leave!! Every year I see expats, people that I thought to be responsible abandoning animals because it's either too expensive to take them with them or they haven't kept up to date with the vaccinations.

I've already noticed a big change in 'appropriate dressing for Dubai' since the recent media coverage. Mall security are starting to warn people that are dressed in an inappropriate manner according to UAE customs. They told me that there are now officials in the Malls after hundreds of complaints about people walking around in shorts, strappy tops and very short dresses. They advised that visitors would be informed of UAE dress code, covering shoulders and no shorts, short dresses/skirts or anything see through and given a booklet to read. Residents, they will take a firmer stand as they already know the UAE laws and are deliberately flouting them. The word out is that a warning will be given first and if repeated again then there is talk of fines or black points on your I.D. Card. They say that Sharjah and Abu Dhabi are already implementing the dress code strictly and Dubai has to also adhere to the UAE customs on appropriate dressing. I think that Mall security are just trying to make their job easier by saying that we should warn people if we see them dressing inappropriately, not sure if I would like to go down that route though!!

Totally agree with Chocs01, whilst retrievers are pretty good with children they are big, lovable, pushy and need a lot of exercise. Dubai is also getting more and more difficult to find places where you can exercise a dog. My granddaughter is 10 and has a King Charles Spaniel, goes with her almost everywhere but they can be very yappy like most small dogs. There is an animal rescue centre at Al Barsha who are always looking for volunteers, they even do school visits so their animals would be used to shrieking children, maybe that would be a good place to volunteer and she would get involved with a variety of animals and see which she would prefer to have as a pet. Don't kill me mum if she comes back with a Donkey!!

It doesn't matter what nationality you are or whether you were married Muslim or Christian for the authorities here to accept a Marriage Certificate it has to be 'attested' by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). We are a British couple and were married in Cyprus and had to go through this whole process of attestation. We were married in a SLH beach resort (not in a church or mosque). Our M.C. first had to be attested at the M.F.A in Cyprus and then it had to be sent down to the Cyprus Embassy in Abu Dhabi (not one in dubai) to be attested that the attestation done in Cyprus was authentic. Only then was our PRO able to take it to the M.F.A. in Dubai and for them to accept it. Luckily all this was able to be done by courier between ourselves and our wedding planner in Cyprus. Important note if you send your M.C. anywhere make sure you send by reputable courier, the document is trackable and keep several copies at home. Finally, for the sake of a few months it's not worth taking the risk, there's very cheap flights at the moment and Dubai is only going to get hotter the longer you stay!!! Wishing you all the best.

It's a scam folks don't feel guilty for not helping. These men know that if they are destitute they can contact their embassy who will help them with accommodation until repatriating them back home. They don't want to go home and this is an easy way and dishonest way of making money.

Thank you RuthM... I have already contacted the Maine Coon society but I wanted to ensure that there wasn't a Maine Coon in one of the Middle East rescue centres that was looking for a permanent home. Chocs01.... I totally agree with many of your sentiments. All our cats have been rescue, our first was with us for 15 years until she died, we then went to adopt a kitten at an EK Stewardess apartment and found there were two so we adopted both. They have been with us now for 7 years but unfortunately our female (Persian) died recently of a heart attack. We have always wanted a Main Coon and have instead spent over 22 years rehoming abandoned or unwanted Dubai cats. Our cats are given an annual health check at the same vet that we have been using for years and have Pet Passports in case we should ever have to leave Dubai. Part of the problem is that Dubai is very transient and people buy a pet not realising the unless their annual vaccinations are kept up to date they will not be allowed into the home country. The other problem of course is cost of shipping home many don't want to pay the boarding fees and flights home.

Sue62, Exactly the same thing happened to me in Ibn Batutta Car Park. He asked me for money and I thought the wound looked real so offered to escort him to the Pharmacy, he moved away very quickly and I couldn't understand why. Last year I fell for another scam. My husband and I were near Bab Al Shams and noticed a car with it's bonnet up, I asked hubby to stop and help, soon after a little girl got out of the car and said she was hungry and didn't have money for food. I passed her 100 Dhms and the mother thanked me, the bonnet was shut pretty quickly and miraculously the car started. when I told my husband that I'd given the little girl money he was very annoyed he knew about this scam but I didn't! We lived in India for several years and scams like this were very common often syndicated by rich gangs. I should have known better!! My hubby tells me that I'm too soft.

Don't know that i'd call Park n Rob car park an affluent target area lol but i was sat in my car having a drink the other morning when a man approached clutching some pieces of paper...i wound my window down and he ask if i speak english (lol) and then proceeds to mumble and point to these pharmacy receipts...then he starts to pull up his shirt sleeve and i have flashbacks to all the stories i've read on here about the gammy arm beggars ladling mayonnaise on to make it look realistic....thankfully he had a spotless new white dressing on but i just said oh noooo and waved him away, turned my head and put window back up...when i looked round he was ambling off in the opposite direction...Thankfully if i hadn't read on here that it is a scam i may have given him money...genuine cases are different but these are professional beggars.... I met up with this man this morning near JLT metro station. He asked me if I spoke English and then showed me a tatty receipt from Al Mina Pharmacy. I thought he was going to ask me directions, but his English wasn't good and he muttered something about Rashid hospital, and then proceeded to list up his sleeve to show me his bandage. It was then that I said "no sorry", and he thanked me and went on his way. I am a bit of a soft touch and if I hadn't heard about this scam on here, prolly would have given him some money.

Tobiland, I too suffered the same backlash from others on this site. After 20+ years in Dubai I was so overjoyed. At last, a shop (TKD) that stocks well supportive, pretty bra's in large cup sizes with an added bonus of a specialist bra fitting service and changing rooms with robes. Excellent!! I immediately wanted to share this information with other ladies who have been suffering the same ill fitting bra experiences. I uploaded the information onto this site thinking ladies would be really happy but some of the comments were awful accusing me of advertising and trying to get cheap publicity whilst I have no ulterior motive other than to bring the same happiness to other ladies. Anyway, all ends well..... I purchased many sets including the best supportive support bra I have ever owned and am absolutely delighted with the result, my daughter also purchased several sets, I wouldn't buy anywhere else now. I went along to their afternoon tea on Monday and am very pleased to say that it was a huge success, many ladies there and all saying the same amazing things about the brands, Panache, Freya and many others. So to all the negative ladies out there have faith in your fellow expats ladies!!

I had been wearing the wrong size though getting a 36E the largest M&S do and after being measured by TKD I found that I am really a 34FF. This is really a great thread as all 'ample cleavage' ladies know it is very hard to get well supportive lingerie in Dubai. Keep them up, girls!!

Hello Mrs Joan Belle, As Laura wrote in the post below. Panache can be purchased at TKD in Town centre tel 3856353 ask for Natalie, she was the Manageress for Bravissimo in the UK and was headhunted to come over and start up this new shop in Dubai. They also do Freya and other makes and have just got their beach range in. The Panache sports Bra is just amazing. The key to support is the 'encapsulating' cups. They are having an afternoon tea this afternoon Hope this helps

You can get application froms for the old Jebel Ali village from their club, they were handing them out at security for anyone that asked. For Muntazah you can call the management office 8846699 and speak to Mustafa (before 11am) as he also looks after Jumeirah Lake Towers and tends to leave Muntazah at 11a. Hope this helps.
