LT, been thinking about you - how are you coping? hope you are ok? Thankyou so much for your thoughts TB. x Yes we are all ok, everyday it's a little easier, really just wanted to give people a heads up about the potential for difficulties in an already difficult situation. Looking back though, it did have its funny side, he is probably still chortling away up there.

I find this whole upheaval about horse meat very hypocritical. Why on earth is is so wrong to eat horse as opposed to cows and chickens. They are all animals aren't they? Yes but if it is labelled HORSE then I know what I am buying. Fraud is the point. If I get horse, I want to pay horse prices! [img'>http://www.pic4ever.com/images/2gwb921.gif[/img'> I've often paid for horse.......................and been defrauded. That dead cert for the 2.30 at Kempton............................

I've always gone to graveyards. I was always encouraged to stay in the car but my parents would allow me to put flowers and such. Also, last summer my aunt passed away quite tragically 2 weeks before her son's wedding. she only had 4 sons, so me my other aunt (her sister) and her best friend did the washing of her body at the funeral home. Believe me, there's a big difference between a funeral home ...............and a Gulf mortuary. edited by Livelytrish on 23/02/2013

On a slight aside, it might be helpful to advise expat ladies (God forbid they need to know) but in the Gulf region there are no such things as undertakers. My children had to go to the morgue in Doha and prepare my DH for burial. It was a mixture of the tragic, the comic and the surreal. LT, I am sorry for you and your children's loss. The undertaker/ graveyard watch man is the same. and the burial is done by the close family members, it's the only way that close family can come to terms of theirs loss. It's a bit difficult for everybody gone throw this, it's just a reminder how we are all fragile and everybody will be washed and dressed up, that is the only thing I did learn from my early days when I was a teen. That's why when any of our family members die, we - the children - are always kept away from all of this, I remember it can take up to a week when we placed with a relative from the other side of the family - my mum side if the deceased is from my father side and vice versa - and it ends with contacting the lawyer and reading the well.... HTH Yes, it certainly brought home the fragility of life......................but for a Western family, believe me it was NOT a healing process. Not criticising, merely advising others less inured to the realities................ Or the lack of tact from those more used to them. Luckily the children saw the funny side when the mortuary attendants apologised for the fact that their Daddy was still a bit too frozen to bend.

It's a spathiphyllum, if anyone's got one, could you please tell me if I am supposed to put it into a new pot adding some new soil or is it ok as it is? and how often is it supposed to be watered? was so focused on the orchid that completely forgot to ask about the poor peace lily... They are really tough, and easy to care for. Pot it on only if the pot seems too small, otherwise leave alone. They don't like direct ME sunlight, best in cooler rooms and not too much water (they will droop gently when thirsty).

Humane euthanasia is not the worst thing which could happen to an animal. At least it is quick and painfree. Unlike being dumped into a very inhospitable climate ..........to starve to death. The feral cats (and dogs) have short, painful and unpleasant lives out there, and they have the skills to survive. To turn a pet loose to fend for itself is nothing short of viciously cruel. You are right ladies, it's too early to say whether or not he did it, especially with what happened with Jo Yeates and her landlord at Xmas. But one has to wonder why the police chose to publish his photo so soon after they caught him. I read today one newspaper saying they do have forensic evidence now, but you are right 'innocent until proven guilty', and like Expat said, THEY are the experts for a reason, best see what transpires over the next 24 hours. They published it..............because they are not very bright, nor well advised. Even if he is guilty as H@ll, they just damaged their case.

It is and for 5 days he's been silent, I don't believe in torture, but come on 5 days while the parents suffer unimaginable pain, it's sickening. But what if he didn't do it? I'm NOT saying this is the case here but people are sometimes arrested for crimes that they haven't committed. Remember Jo Yeates who was murdered in Bristol? Her landlord was arrested on suspicion of her murder but subsequently released as he had nothing to do with it. Imagine if on top of that ordeal he'd been tortured in order to get a confession. I'd be the first to say that no punishment would be too harsh for Mark Bridger if he is guilty but that has yet to be proven. Exactly. AND innocent until proved guilty. The Media driven mob mentality is becoming very very frightening. Even more frightening is the apparent abandonment of the law of contempt by the media, and the collusion by poorly educated police. Any good lawyer could argue that this man could not have a fair trial now. So where is the justice in that? For him, or for the victim.

Syria is backed by Russia, they are allies. Russia got its naval base there. Hence, USA holds on to Turkey , and got its base there. As I said, a proxy war on more than one level, but I would be less worried by the Cold War reprise than by the schismatic religious dimension. The latter has the real potential for regional escalation.

Turkey would not have retaliated without the full support of the US and the rest of Europe. Turkey is the best hope for Syria now. The West needs Turkey more than Turkey needs the West. Why do we need Turkey more than they need us? The West sees Turkey as a moderate "secular" Mid Eastern country, hence a much needed friendly face in anotherwise potentially hostile area. If the West had any real hold over Turkey then the "Cyprob" would have been resolved a long time ago. Turkey has shifted its focus in the last few years, no longer is it interested in EU membership, it is beginning to reposition itself as a essentially ME country.

Deperately been trying to follow it but can't seem to make sense of what is happening and why. Could this escalate? Yes, the Syrian conflict could eventually escalate (it is a war by proxy on several levels) but not through Turkish involvement. Turkey has got enough to deal with internally (Kurds) and has little to gain by overreacting. I would be far more concerned about the impact on Lebanon in the short term, and long term .............this is rapidly becoming a showdown between two branches of one religion. And that is very, very worrying.

This is an old scam, run by professional criminals. There is no dog or any other animal up for adoption, it is a really mean twist on the Nigerian bank account racket, in this case preying on people's kindness rather than their greed. As DH and I are both British we can go back to the UK, he still pays tax, I don't as I'm a DH/Social Calander Manager. After 30 years in the Middle East the UK doesn't feel like it could be home. Our children and grandchildren are still around the Middle East so we wouldn't like to be too far away from them. Buying a villa in Dubai? I don't think that residency visas are given now with property and the property is only guaranteed for ten years. Then there is the question of health, you cannot grow old in Dubai if you are an expat as you need a clean bill of health for a visa. I think staying in any Gulf country would find the same issues... visa, medical, etc. I'm sure other long term expats must be facing the same question. Why not look at Cyprus? It's in the EU so as UK citizens you would have no visa issues, there are good flight connections to Europe and the ME...in many ways it is more ME than Europe, I call it ME-lite! It has beaches, mountains (even skiing in winter).......full of history, very little crime, real seasons and a lovely sloooooow pace of life. It works for us! (Oh and property prices are really low just now ..........some great bargains to be had) Only 3 hours from Dubai.........come and take a look!

Really? what exactly makes them more qualified.. i have no grass only tree's. i have irrigation and a blower, power hose and preening tools. no green fingers required.. It is terribly irritating but you have to remember where you are. A little more patience and cultural awareness might help you cope.

I don't know how how to put this gently, although it is meant in the kindest possible way, but are you sure that you shouldn't try listening to the docs? The fact that your baby was fine in hospital suggests to me that he is mostly suffering from your nerves. Babies do spit up, some do it a lot and it's called possetting, but it's harmless and will pass. As will your anxiety. (I don't know how old your little one is, but the dreaded three month colic is just that..it lasts for the first three months and then disappears) Do you have any older or more experienced mums to share all this with? It sounds as tho you need support rather than medical intervention. In any case, take care and good luck. edited by Livelytrish on 08/09/2012

That is really sad. is that not illegal here? Can they not be shut down or something done about it? I know where I'm from they would be shut down in a heart beat for having a shady opperation like that. Surly their are animal rights activists here that can do something??? When I went to the pet shops they all (went to 2) seemd nice, clean, organized and all the pups were great and came out and my son played with them. Even the cats seemed very nice and playful and healthy. I asked about their turn over and they said the pets only stay there about a week to 10 days. And if you believe that...........................well, what else did you expect the underpaid and untrained staff to tell you? I saw adult cats and dogs (not to mention birds and reptiles) in petshops all over Dubai which had obviously been there since infancy. And with all the disturbed behaviours you would expect. To tell the truth, some of the conditions were worse than in the dreaded Sharjah animal souk, but even in the "better" stores there were adolescent and adult animals pacing dementedly in tiny unsuitable pens. Animals are just a retail commodity in the Gulf, please, please, please do not buy into a vile trade which causes huge amounts of suffering. K9 and Feline Friends, Bin Kittie Collective et al are the ONLY ethical way to go. If people are determined on a status symbol they can buy a handbag, not a dog. Oh and yes, there have been many animal rights groups who have tried to change things but please consider where you are.

13 days with an actual migraine means something is [u'>seriously[/u'> wrong. You should go to the emergency room of your nearest hospital. Dont wait. My cousin had one for 4 days and ignored it and on the 5th day had a brain aneurism, went into a coma and died a week later. My doc told me to never let the sun set on a migraine. Thirteen days is too long.............and unlikely to be a classic migraine. Having said that it could be something as non sinister as a sinus infection or a pinched nerve, but in any event you need to seek professional medical advice quickly.

Let's just say that it is annoying when native English speakers make spelling, grammatical, and punctuation errors in their own language. Which is the point, I think, Stovetop was trying to make. The sheer arrogance of NATIVE English speakers who either were never taught, or much worse, refused to learn or even acknowledge the importance of reasonably accurate spelling and grammar..................makes me want to eat, shoot and leave.

For me, the personal 'story' is lacking whenever I see a chinese competitor win. It feels much more like a large kiddie-factory has won another medal, and it makes the win less personal in the way another person with normal relationships with friends, family and a personal drive to win. I feel very sorry for any Chinese person who loses as the pressure on them is immense and I doubt any 6 year olds who are separated from their families to work 24/7 in a boot-camp has really "chosen" their fate. This pressure at the national level forces them to behave badly (eg the badminton) avoid any severe punishment. The human rights abuses in China have never stopped and we can only imagine what happens away from public (international) view. Tianamen Square should not be forgotten.

Each of these countries have their own national anthems as was shown in the opening ceremony so why be expected to sing the English anthem? Scotland has its own religon, eductaion, money and law, and also its own anthem so can totally understand why they didnt feel the need to sing the English anthem. On the subject i have noticed the commentators speak of the athletes as doing their part for England regardless of the athlete coming from Scotland, Wales or NI. There i thought it was the british games and not the English games, oops silly me. Well, refusing to acknowledge the British National Anthem will do nothing to convince the commentators that it is a British event.. But actually....................the constituent countries of UK DON'T have their own national anthems. The national anthem of the UNITED KINGDOM is God Save the Queen. Flower of Scotland etc are songs adopted by the rugby fraternity and sung with full heart by the Scots and the Welsh at rugby games. If a Scot/Welshman/Northern Irish person cannot sing the national anthem of GB at the Olympics, then they should have the decency to step down and allow a proud BRIT to represent the Union. After all, it was UK taxpayers money which paid for the Olympics..........and the training and facilities which allowed them to perfect their skills. Rule Britannia...............and God save the Queen. (And before anyone asks.................I am a very proud Scot..........and an even prouder BRIT) Oh, and can we forget about the verse which is rude about the Scots? It was written a very long time ago........................

Wella used to make a henna/cassia based safe dye but now discontinued, as far as i know the safest and best is a company called Surya Brasil.............www.suyrabrasil.com. They have a good range of colours and best of all in an easy to apply cream, as opposed to the messiness of regular henna. Thanks, yes there are emotional issues as her Father and I have been separated for almost two years now and she has had a difficult childhood due to family problems. The phone and laptop etc have all been taken away for periods but to no ..avail. It seems neither punishment or reward works. We have been to counseling and she refuses to go back. I dont want to give up but i need justification to pay so much money with no effort on her part. Children are investments................but not the financial kind. Your posts are really a little worrying in that you seem to regard your child as such. You have admitted that you have not provided her with the perfect growing environment.............perhaps you just need to sit down and talk to her.......and give her a hug and ask her to forgive you for not giving her the secure childhood she needed.

A dictator isn't a monarch though. ? A monarch can be a dictator? Yes that's true enough. The trouble with monarchy, for me, is it doesn't make enough sense that the next in line really is good enough for the job simply because he/she is the son/daughter of so and so. This goes for any country. At least with the elected, they can always be booted out at the end of their term. Also do Brits really believe the monarchy has a supernatural legitimacy? And the Head of State in your country is?
