Apologies expatbrat3 think I got the other thread deleted as I put on my email address...!!! Anyway would love to meet up for a drink when you arrive we are villa 33. This is our first move so exciting but scary too!!! My children would love to meet others . My husband moved into the villa at Easter and we were able to spend some time at the compound then. I think it is lovely as are the villas but as this is my first move I have little experience of these things however it appears to be well maintained. Lovely pool area with plenty of seating and loungers, small shop which is useful. When we were there at Easter there were lots of young teens so plenty of opportunity for your daughter to make friends. Any other questions I will do my best to answer but please pop in we arrive on 7 th August x

We are due to arrive middle of August !! Understand that Doha is quiet due to everyone leaving. I have three children twins boy/ girl who are due to start DBS Year 7 in September and youngest DD Year 3. My eldest two are reluctant movers to say the least...anyone else been through this transistion tips to survive etc i am just hoping they will settle in quickly. So if anyone one else has children of a similar age who fancies meeting for a coffee or grape juice let me know. Or if anyone else who has kids starting year 7 please get in touch. The move is becoming very real now and a little/ very scary!

Hello as yet we have not decided who to use...this is driving me mad!! But my DH is coming over in half term and we are going to decide what to store/ ship. He has forgotten whilst being away just how much " stuff' we have!!! We moved into a villa over Easter hols and went to Ikea and bought quite a bit of furniture which suits villa so gives me a better idea of what to bring. Should hopefully have a clearer answer for you at the end of May. Are you any clearer on who to use? This is my first move abroad so I am worrying about everything , it is all becoming real now which is scary.

Perhaps your friends could ask the question on TES forums. ( times educational forum) UK. There may be some teachers who have experience with the schools mentioned.

Sorry meant to say I have packed quite a bit myself e.g things such as Christmas decorations and photograph albums etc things I know I will not need, however I have been told by one of the companies that they would have to re pack due to customs etc. Both quotes have come as a result of having someone come round and chat through the process and look at the volume of goods.

Yes I have had two quotes. I have been quoted as needing a 20ft container which will be about 80 per full. Both quotes have now come in around the £3800 mark door to door companies which have quoted are Simpsons and Crown. GB liners come next week. If anyone knows of any cheaper options please let me know. I live in Northamptonshire.

On this note...how do people generally go about finding a doctor e.g. Do people register for a particular one? Or do you just phone up and make appointments. We will be moving in the summer. I am on a repeat prescription in the UK for asthma. I am looking for a good general practitioner or the equivalent for myself and three children preferably in the al waab area. Any suggestions most gratefully received. Cal- Hob hope your little boy feels better soon x

I think we will plan to arrive after Ramadan which I believe ends around the 7 th August. I know from visiting last year and viewing some compounds at the end of August that it appeared to be very quiet. Wanted to arrive a few weeks before school etc started back in order to get bearings and set up house etc. I am not looking forward to the heat. Thank you to everyone for their posts.

I know not looking forward to the heat went for visit end of August and it was a heat unlike anything I have experienced before! I have not applied to DESS simply because I want all three children to be in the same location. I have applied to DC (older two due to take test at their school this week) but think the chances are slim. Doha British School and Parkhouse so fingers crossed we will know something soon...nightmare. Have you visited Doha before Scottishzimbo? Are your children excited by the move?

My husband has been away for a few months, this type of move is all new to us so it has taken a bit of getting used to!!! I know many of the ladies on this forum have much more experience than me at relocating and will be able to answer most of your questions. I can understand you wanting to all be together as a family, we have decided to wait to relocate until the summer for a number of reasons the main one being that my eldest two wanted to complete their final year at primary school also I wanted to ensure that my husband was settled in the job before moving ( although nothing it seems is permanent in Qatar!!!) . The school issue is a major consideration ...if you have not already applied then you really must do so now. I hope all goes well with your plans.

Thank you for your reply. Yes husband has PO box so that would be a possibility. Parents are full UK passport holders ....I know they can automatically buy visa for one month on arrival but after reading up on extensions of over a month of this seemed to suggest that a medical would be required but was obviously hoping that this would not be the case. Just wondered if anyone's parents had stayed for longer and what the procedure was? Thank you again

I too am Scottish and coming over in December to see husband will have our three children with me ...if I you find out any ideas let me know. Many of the hotels appear to do meals etc but people who actually live there might be able to suggest something better. I do know that their is a Scottish society. When I came over for a visit went to the harp Irish bar in the Sheraton looked like it might have a good atmosphere obviously depending on whether you have children or not

Thank you for your replies. I too am a teacher (primary) So I am not as familiar with secondary education. It is difficult to judge schools without actually visiting and "getting a feel" for a place speaking to staff etc...when all is confirmed I will put their names down for a few schools in order to increase their chances of gaining a place. It is also so difficult to compare schools from UK to Qatar ...my children attend an excellent state school but they are in a large class of 30 plus which is common here in the UK. As long as the school was offering a similar standard to their school here and the children were happy and settled with some activities I would be happy. Lots of luck with your new teaching job ...must be excited and nervous at the same time.

Thank you for your replies.. The schools I have been looking at are Doha College, Doha Montessori British and Park House realise all have long lists. I believe education allowance is around 30000per child. I take on board comments with regards to salary - what I really wanted to know if your housing and education are being paid for is that level of salary enough e.g to rent car, food shopping, bills etc and have some money to save.

Does this sound enough money? 40000/45000qr per month and an education allowance and housing allowance will obviously get any offers confirmed in writing. Also wanted to ask this forum in particular as have also posted on some other ones where answers appear to be rather sarcastic to say the least. How do people in particular from the UK compare schools to UK state system I realise difficulty of gaining places but once you do how would you say they are in comparison. Know it is difficult to say as each individual school will be different but do you find your children happy at school and achieving as much as they did at home. I would very much appreciate any shared experiences. Thank you

If I move to Qatar I would be keen for my parents to visit on a regular basis possibly for more than one month at a time. Do they need to have hotel accomodation booked in order to visit or is it ok for them to stay with us in our villa? Does anone have any experience of this e.g do they require medicals etc. Basically would want parents to stay with me if they were visiting. Thank you

The area near the airport isn't really full of big name compounds. They tend to be smaller. Al Fardan Gardens 4 (?) is around there which is beautiful but very pricey for the area. A lot depends on what your budget is. Why are you desperate to live right by the airport? If it's for your husband's work I wouldn't restrict yourself as the D-ring means that travel time isn't *that* bad from most of Doha. I have nothing against the area, I used to live there, but it's not known as a particularly desirable area and there are no schools nearby. Personally, I'd go for the shorter commute for your kids (you'll understand when you see the driving) and a longer one for your husband. You can stay one month on a tourist visa, extendable in country for another month. Thank u that's really useful yes will make him drive longer
