Might be throwing a spanner in the works but would not recommend either for great stain resistance/hard wear factor. If you are decided make sure you get them fabric protected (Scotchguard or similar) to extend their life. agree, but did not realise stains would be a factor...if you need to have them washed/cleaned regularly go for cotton, would ask Joseph at Aleena to do them for you, he is usually very knowledgeable about materials/washing instructions

I would guess suede look would block out more light than satin. satin would move better in the breeze if you had your windows open and curtains drawn, I would choose suede for the bedrooms, and maybe dining room and the rest go with satin or a light cotton (with sheers)

I was bought one by my DH years ago, we ascended from Chester race course, UK, about 4pm and descended in a cornfield somewhere in the Cheshire countryside around 7pm, it was amazing, would definitely go up again edited by loube on 01/02/2012

it could be an actuator problem. This happened to us at Green Comm East, with Emicool. If the actuator breaks when you switch off the a/c the flow is still happening....therefore consumption will be recorded. In August it added 1500 dhs to our bill. You need to ask Emicool or another service provider to test the system and check the flow...there is a test, or perhaps you have done this already....

for whose convenience is this rule made? certainly not the parents or the children. If one had a serious issue in a school I am sure a special case would be made for a transfer

ccdoha, actually if you came here in Sept2010 and leave in April 2012, you have actually stayed away for a full tax year 6.4.11 to 5.4.2012. This should then give you a Non resident and not ordinarily resident status with HMRC. I thought one of these terms was relevant only after a longer period of absence than 1 year. Other factors are taken into account too such as whether you own property in UK. If you do this gives indication that you did not plan to move away permanently and therefore you may not be classed as above stated. There are rules on HMRC.gov.uk website.

I believe it will be taken seriously only once it is enshrined in law, and the police support it and enforce it for non compliance....until then you will be sending out a message but not everyone will take action

is this taking shoes off a cultural thing ? I've never expected my guests to remove their shoes, nor have i ever considered doing so myself in others' houses - unless of course i visited someone from a different culture (like you take shoes off in mosques etc...). And here we only have a couple of rugs - not carpets... And the baby thing ? I've had two children and i never once considered that i hadn't kept my floors adequately clean - do you not have door mats to wipe your feet ? in Thailand removal of shoes is commonplace, and everyone does it. It then becomes a habit, and I sae it in Singapore too. For me, I have no rules BUT if the shoes are dirty off they come....leave it to people to check. Any Asians coming into my home always remove their shoes....

there is one happening on Poppy Lane right now, so it can be done, but you do need to find out what the parameters/building code restrictions are, and get permission..there is a lot of wasted space outside with the family villas

It's not because it's dry it's been cancelled/postponed it's because as well as serving alcohol, holding of entertainment and parties is forbidden as it's a Holy occasion. You'd think the organisers would be aware that this might happen here and be savvy enough not to book entertainers for a possible Islamic Holiday, wouldn't you? exactly what I was thinking when this thread first opened

Hi I am following this diet, started Oct 1st, have lost 15.5kg. Have another 10kg to loose. I have done Atkins and Weight Watchers. The beauty of this diet is that after the weightless period there is a longer period of stabilisation in which all the major food groups are re introduced and the body is reassured that the dieting phase is over.....I am not in this phase yet but I am hoping it will be a better result for longterm than the other two diets were....my weight gain is from having 3 kids so I do not intend to let it return. update weightloss as of today 17.5kg...only 8 kg left to loose edited by loube on 25/01/2012 edited by loube on 25/01/2012

I agree with SueB - all family members must want the dog...and be prepared to look after it. We had a dog on trial so to speak, he is remembered now by our family as the 'sleepover dog' cause he came for 1 night only and whilst DH and DSx3 loved it, I could not stand it after 24 hours of being followed around the house, piddling on the floor with excitement, jumping on the sofa after being told several times quite firmly No. In the end I woke up at 1 a.m. after not being able sleep with worry about this dog that I really did not want to look after, so it went back to owner next day. 5 days later I was still finding dog hair on the family laundry and I only wore 2 tops in the time the sleepover dog was with us. The owner was a family who the DH wanted the dog and the DW did not, it was 14 months old. Hopefully it has found a home.

a bit hit and miss with the Oat Bran, sometimes not in my local Choitram, and never in my local Spinneys...Holland & Barrett at Mirdiff CC used to stock it, and said they were getting more in...I have used the Infinity Foods brand, it is good and the Oatbran sprinkles. I use 2 tbsp per day and one x 500g seems to last about 3 weeks...

Spongemonkey, I find myself asking the same thing! I had to substitute a few things on the nutrition plan I follow. For instance--I stick with green beans, cucumbers and cabbage instead of asparagus and broccoli. I also try to eat local vegetables--don't really like the thought of eating things that had to travel so far or being engineered. One thing I love is the abundance and price of Shiritaki noodles :) what a filler and great fiber source--especially if you miss eating pasta! reminded me of what I gave my guinea **** for dinner....he, he - green beans, cucumbers but spinach not cabbage

for now, that is, and it is expensive and they can be rejected they cannot get automatic residency now tho' [b'>after 5 years continual service to you in UK, they have to go home....[/b'> No they dont !!! as long as they can prove the points below they can apply for settlement. To qualify for settlement in the UK as a domestic worker, you must: have been living here legally for the last 5 years; currently have permission to stay here as a domestic worker; have been in the UK as a full-time domestic worker throughout the 5 years; have maintained and accommodated yourself and any dependants without the use of public funds throughout the 5 years; and have sufficient knowledge of language and life in the UK. Thompson1 its a little harder to bring girls into the UK now do you have photos of your maid on holiday with you ? anything that proves she is invaluable to your family will help your case. I also would not apply until she has worked for you for a year. edited by twilight on 12/01/2012

Therefore in Singapore, we had it written into our contract with the maid that I would pay 400 USD min. so I paid my helper 600 SGD per month, plus food allowance (SGD 150), plus medical (but some medical is covered by the compulsory insurance policy you have to buy for the helper) but outpatient medical is not covered. So this 400 USD = 1472 AED. So I paid 1800 AED salary, and food allowance of 450 AED per month. No phone or TV provided, as the maid should be working hard throughout the day and not have time to be watching TV or making long phone calls. My helper worked 7.30 am (she tried to start at 7 am but I told her to go eat breakfast and not come into the house until 7.30 am and finished most nights at 9.30pm (after our eve meal). Sunday off, babysit included. Singapore rules are home leave flight only at end of work permit (2 years) and if not renewing contract this flight would be for return to home country. If renewing contract you could offer the flight and 2 weeks leave OR maid can take the value of the flight as a cash payment. All very reasonable I think, and I do agree with some posters on this thread that there is a tendency towards excess here, with all the extra perks! namely TV, Phones and laptops....it is making the maids greedy, easily tempted to switch to a new employer and not work as hard as they should.

To interject and verify that the Philippine government want all their overseas domestic workers to be paid a minimum wage of 400USD globally, regardless of which country they are working in. This is to protect them against exploitation and low wages. Minimum wages have been set by the embassies of the workers, not the DNRD or UAE government. You are definitely not breaking any UAE law by paying less than the embassy recommended minimum salary.

oversupply? is there an oversupply of guinea **** here in Dubai? we had trouble finding these 4, they only came into the pet shop last week....so very good pets for children, low maintenance and clean t00. They live 5-7 years and if we move we will relocate them along with us....was thinking more about the risks of complications for the pregnancy too, but there is vet within a stone's throw of my home.. hubby always threatens to BBQ any creature that comes within the perimeter fence of our home, so these are doing quite well so far...unlike the dog (but that is another story)

[i'>Retirement package, are you bonkers...she only needs an op at worst and after 8 weeks should be able to return to work...I think the OP has to consider whether charity begins at home (with her family first) rather than the maids?[/i'> Not sure i understand what that means? you recommend i just let her go? or wait it out til she is better? Hi mols I do not have a maid, so I guess I should not be giving advice, but you have to do what is best for you, your budget and your conscience. In my situation previously I was not going to pay for an op. for my helper, and she just carried on as is, but it was not urgent as with your maid. If I had your situation I would send her home for the op. as if she stays here and has it you will have to look after her during recovery, and that will not be easy as well as having to cover her chores and pay her.

Mine helps where he can, will always do the more physical jobs around the home, and responds well to a list. He is great support when kids are sick (which is not my forte). What more can I say? I am SAHM with school age kids. If you think things are uneven, then draw up a list. If you cannot agree employ a live-in maid or cleaner. Take turns with shopping/cooking. I think that the idea of the SAHM needing help with the housework is genuine whilst the kids are preschool, and once they are at school during the school holidays. However other than a few treats for myself, I have plenty of time to keep the home clean, the laundry in check, do the grocery shopping and cook the meals. Maybe some chores could be shared on the weekend, like the ironing or cooking. My husband often makes a cooked breakfast for the family on Saturday mornings, which he enjoys to do and I get to put my feet up and read the newspaper whilst it is cooking...yum!
