Stupid question I know.. but... my (soon to be) husband and I are moving to Abu Dhabi soon, from Singapore. I have loads of tops and dresses with spaghetti or singlet style straps. Are these going to be acceptable there? On their own or with a light cardigan? I know the blurbs say "modest" but not exactly sure how far that goes? Thanks.... If i am heading to the mall or supermarket etc ( where there will be a lot of people) i always take a pashmina or a cardigan. TBH people wear what they want however the UAE is not strict however it is always best to observe the customs of where you are moving too.

But some UK companies won't accept the card for weird reasons (they wanted the delivery address to match the card address). I have had issues with Evans and Clarks. Grrrrrr. Anti fraud regrettably. I use my UK C/C

Dubizzle used to be really effective for jobs but now is an absolute nightmare! Applicants really don't even read the job description half the time. I would suggest LinkedIn, it's free to post and a lot of professionals use it now to look for jobs. I think NaukriGulf.com is free too I dont mean to be negative however posting roles between AED3-5,000 will not attract many applicants on Linked In ( Am i right in assuming the salary is in AED not GBP)

it's illegal but people do it, like sharing maids is illegal and drinking without a licence etc Personally, I wouldn't risk it myself but I know that people do.... Neither would i, what if there was an emergency etc? what if the child was injured or worse?

Crying babies have never bothered me, now children bouncing around the front/back seat of a car does. Whose business is it anyway? I was in T&T last year and a Mum was trying to get her eyebrows threaded and her little one was grizzly, other patrons were giving her the evil eye and dirty looks and the baby wasnt even crying. Surely they are far worse things to worry about then a baby crying. They may of been fed, changed etc babies do cry. It isnt exactly hard to switch off

Wow, I love this thread. Good to know I'm not alone. For the first time in my life, I'm on diet. I'm lucky I have fast metabolism so never had to diet before, but I'm cleaning up my diet now cos I have a half-marathon to run, plus my personal trainer told me to - and I gained a bit of weight since Christmas!! I thought it was easy but oh boy!!! I literally wanted to cry yesterday I almost threw the watermelon I was eating. Seriously!!! I have newfound respect for people who are on diet and sticks with it. The healthy eating plans are the best, most diets do not work and people end up piling on the weight again. Slimming World and Weight Watchers are both healthy eating plans and you can eat what you want in moderation. I am not a fan of the no carb/soup/lose a stone in a week that push your bodies into starvation mode and they may work short term but not in the long term Couple the above plans with exercise and they will work. I am a huge fan of WW and have lost weight and kept it off Good Luck!

I believe that some people on this forum have sponsored western nannies - but you cannot call them a nanny on the official paperwork - instead they are called "governesses" or "tutors" (do a forum search). The salary will probably be a lot higher compared to the typical "maid/nanny" salary Uk salary in Dubai will be low also as costs here are higher

My sister says it has to be done in multiple sessions to see results. She did 20 sessions of lipomassage and I can tell the difference. Of course, it's coupled with diet and exercise so you can never really tell, but she says it works well for those stubborn fats that is almost impossible to get rid of by simple diet and exercise. It does come back aswell unless you keep up the massage and diet/exercise :-(

and sick of trying to lose weight. That tuna salad I had for lunch did not even fill a corner of my stomach. Drink water or low calorie soups. It helps make you feel fuller. Buy ricecrackers to snack on. They have almost no calories. Dieting sucks. I was supposed to start last week but have been delaying it due to flu.... Thanks I forgot about cup a soup. I have 5 small meals a day so never feel hungry although i have a cheese board in the fridge calling me and it is going to take me all my willpower not to scarf the lot when i get home

Heading in the direction to feed/change etc differs from strolling around, looking at the latest arrivals while baby is crying...come on ladies! :) Also not saying ALL moms are doing this, but why do I see them all too often?I myself have a small one... so not in bracket of 'grandmother having a fit about young moms!' What you *could* be seeing is the experienced Mum knowing, the child is fed, clean and ready to sleep, walking it out til the child does so. It's a normal practise where we come from. Small babies CRY, they are not neccesarily hungry, tired, or in need of a change, or really even in need of too much comfort. Pick them up each time they murmer and be prepared to create a huge rod for your own back! Tiny tiny week to month old littles need you and your skin and your smell and to be wrapped up safe and secure (for the most part) but a 6 month to 8 month old babe knows already that if it squarks it will be either be left so it better get on with sleeping or it will be picked up up and fussed over so why should it sleep? You train it and set the tone for your kiddo and if a mum is getting on with her day out and about, then it is her routine and her training schedule and not for someone else to comment on or shred. lIKE LIKE LIKE.

I heard yesterday that the GEMS schools are requesting AED2500 to keep every child's place for September and if existing parents don't pay it they will offer the place to someone on the waiting list. Apparently it is legal to do so I feel so sorry for people with children here i imagine they hand money over fist here

Hi thanks for replying! I'll do a search for names and then I guess its a case of just choosing someone for the consultation? I'm 11stone and a size 14, i guess I ought to try and lose a bit more although have lost two stone gradually over the past two years. If I went for a consultation and was told I was too heavy I suppose I'd have to go back for another consultation so maybe I ought to wait until I'm about 10stone ish? How tall are you? I weigh the same but am 5ft 8 and a size 12 ( although some tiny clothes shops i am a 14) Dr Khan is supposed to be excellent at this and when i was having my surgery ( not tummy tuck) there was a lady close by who had travelled from Africa to see him I had my consultation and my appt was 6 weeks later however there was a cancellation and i had the procedure done within 2 weeks. The pre-care and after-care was fantastic and if i were ever to do another procedure i would go and see him He isnt the cheapest but one of the best here

My son's nursery has just sent a letter home requesting a deposit of 1500dhs to secure his place there in September. To confirm his ongoing presence at the nursery, this needs to be handed in by the end of this month. It will then be deducted from Term 3 fees in 2013/14! Perhaps I am being naive but this seems totally unnecessary (and early) for us and a nice interest free loan for them...? My older son's nursery would never have asked for a deposit for existing students at this stage. I am beginning to seriously regret changing nurseries. Has anyone else had a request for a deposit for September 2013 already? A few of my friends have apparently this is the norm

Actually I think she does have some type of agency sponsorship. We never deal with her agency. I think she freelances and finds her own work but she does have an agency for her visa Just wondering, so is it illegal to call up the numbers of people who leave a slip of paper under your door saying they are looking for work as a maid? edited by Laura_C on 05/03/2013 It is only legal if you are hiring her through the Agency and have receipts from the Agency that sponsors her. If you don't have these receipts then you could face a fine of 50k++ Freelancing for maids is illegal. Ok thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to ask my maid for a receipt next time. Who knows what her arrangement is? I know she has an agency for her visa, maybe she isn't freelancing and when we were referred to her, she added us to her agency or something and she handled it all which is why we've never dealt with her agency. I suppose if she can supply me with a receipt from whoever is sponsoring her visa, should be legit then regardless. I would ask, a friend of mine had stuff stolen and she reported the maid to the police and was fined as the maid was moonlighting from her current role ( Sponsored by a family not an agency) The notes under the door are illegal maids not worth it If she is sponsored by anyone other than an agency she is working illegally be careful

I have been trying to get smarter on this topic to protect myself from landlords who think they can take advantage of Westerners and claim "the market is back up" when I think it is anything but that. I have found this government website to be helpful with information for understanding the laws. What I am unsure of is how easy it is to get these laws enforced when fellow Westerners are taken advantage of - but I hope some find this helpful: http://www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/Tanzeem/Rentals/rental_process.aspx It isnt just Western people who are taken advantage of

If he shows up at the rental counter with his tourist visa and a valid UK drivers license (don't bring the UAE one or mention he has one), I bet you he will leave with a car. I'd probably not go back to the same place you've been dealing with because they are confused and know too much. would he be covered by the insurance in the event of an accident though if they did find out he had a UAE licence? We asked this and they weren't clear, which is why we've avoided doing it. Doesn't seem worth the risk imo. It isnt as the goalposts can be moved all the time and nothing is ever clear

I was watching some French TV last night (100% Mag), and they actually did their own investigation on this subject! They asked 3rd party lab to do tests on supermarket products vs expensive brand name products. 1. Brand names were generally 10 times the price. 2. For serums, they discovered that both supermarket and brand names were NOT effective. 3. Hydrating creams - the brand names were 13% LESS effective than the supermarket brands. 4. Cleanser creams were equal Note that this a study done on 2 brands only (one supermarket and one expensive) and the names were concealed from the lab, and they were only given brand A and brand B - and this was their conclusion. Interesting.... I believe L'oreal had to withdraw some of their advertising as the ingredients did not do what they say they did. Most of it is a load of tosh and purely a marketing ploy

Who takes their kids to a concert during weekdays anyway with a show starting at 8.30? I thought kids were in bed by 8.30-9PM. ??? Most of the local kids are not even in bed before Midnight here! I am sure execptions must have been made regarding bedtime for the Beiber show. That's why the parents were so peeved when he came on at 10.30! People in this part of the world have very different routines. Lots of people here sleep in the afternoon. Not hat I would allow my kids out that late. Not here or in London. Especially on a school day. no disrespects but that's easy to say when you don't have any !! I could write a book on all the things i'd "never do when I have children".....but ended up doing lol Music concerts? Absolutely NOT. Same here, they should of done it on weekend or school hols

Gas station attendants have their belongings searched and no pockets. Oh really? NO - that's incorrect. Most of the petrol stations in Dubai allow the petrol pump guys to keep their tips; i understand that one of them does not. Which one is that? LDVS - you beat me too it. You don't want a residency visa but you do want a labour visa. Louise, the problem she has is that they dont have enough visa spaces for her? I just want to stay on DHs sponsorship, work part time and stay the right side of the law but if I can bury my head in the sand, my question is, will I be OK or if there is an inspection, can we say it is to be applied for? As a westerner, will you get a warning or do the authorities take a really dim view and why do they insist on every worker having a card, regardless of their sponsorhip status? It is law to make sure that you are sponsored. You either are sponsored by a company or are provided with a labor card. It is to stop illegals working here. Otherwise anyone can come in and work. It is a shame our government doesn't adopt the same approach! It is rare they would cause trouble for you but personally speaking i would not work for a company that did not comply with the labor law plus if they wanted to stop paying you, you do not have a leg to stand on as you cannot take them to court as you should not be working without this The employer would incur a huge fine for this and they do spot checks every now and then You cannot say it is applied for as they can check

Any advice? Never ever pay fees, clients pay agencies to recruit you. Register with as many agencies websites if you can. You have to bear in mind that agencies work on the client side therefore they have to wait for a role to arise and this can be in any industry or designation therefore if one does arise and you have what they are looking for they will contact you. Bear in mind there are lots and lots of other people who have the same qualities/experience as as you however they may be looking for a smaller salary/less benefits etc Headhunters tend to find you on Linked In here however you have to put in the work too to get your profile out there. Have you contacted/networked the industries you are interested in? Well on Linked In I posted all my contact info, a short profile listing my current and previous companies, job titles, industry experience and skills set, but to date I have hesitated to post a complete resume on Linked In- is this really necessary? When you say contacted/networked the industries, again see my previous post - I've only been here 1 year, and my current job has offered hardly any prospects. All of my contacts/network are back in America. Advice kindly appreciated!! What do you do for a career? You do not have to post your CV on Linked in Have you posted your details to Gulf Talent also alot of agencies and companies use that website

I've recently started looking for a new job (I'm currently employed, but looking for a better opportunity) and I'm doing the usual like applying for jobs on all the big websites, networking, linkedin, etc. but I would love some help on how I can get access to the "good" jobs out there. I have a great educational background, a ton of relevant work experience (over 10 years), and think I have some really marketable qualities, but I don't know how to go about finding a good head hunter. A ton of sites I've looked at ask for fees up front, which seems shady to me. Any advice? Never ever pay fees, clients pay agencies to recruit you. Register with as many agencies websites if you can. Don't worry I have been there! My 2nd company here was all but based in the UK, and the guys working in the Dubai office had been here less time than me! So you are infact, the office manager/PRO person? If so, that means you are responsible for everything! First thing you need to do is get a copy of the licence, that will answer a LOT of questions, who it is issued by etc. You mentioned a licence to sponsor 2 people, does that include you? No, I was hired on the understanding that I was sponsored by DH and would not be seeking a work visa and I want it to stay that way too. I would say that you should be provided with a labor card if you are on your Husbands visa The cost is around 4200 plus 2500 deposit ( ball park figure only) Depending on your nationality, if you were caught working without one your sponsor would be fined USD10,000 and the employee could be deported although i havent ever heard of a this happening to a Western person
