I would like to recommend Howdra to anyone who is looking for a handyman to put up mirrors, curtains, lights, anything around the house. I just had them in yesterday thanks to a recommendation on here and I could not have been more impressed. At the modest price tag of 150aed for an hour, four handymen with two ladders, drills and plenty of equipment came and finished everything in 45 minutes. They got my approval for everything before they did it and made sure I was happy with spacing and height before they drilled. The communication was excellent, the customer service, exemplary, and I will most definitely use them again. Just to let you know! [email protected] for any enquiries And I would like to do exactly the opposite as I have add terrible experience with them. I've contacted them for handywork after reading good reviews in Expatwoman but I truely regret it since. Ended up paying twice the quoted price for a terrible job (curtain hanging) with not even a word of excuse from the company. Their response to my experience was ' once back from holidays, in my office, etc. we will investigate - after 3 months I gave up - don't want to feel like begging. its 200AED now and i have used them many many times no problems at all

How is everyone getting on? I made it through week 1, barely and only lost 1.6 kg, which was pitiful, unfortunately it was a case of half the school sleeping over on Thurs and K F F F F F C in the kitchen.....lots of it....buckets of the stuff...... Anyway, I am plodding through week 2 but have been such a devil, I wonder what weigh-in day will be for me. I am just starving. So starving. Really so starving. UGH 1.6 is good better than gaining it :-)

But people who are coming from Europe and US can just show up at the airport like usual, right? So many relatives/friends who have come to visit us say they get the 3rd degree at their departure airport about not having a visa before departure. That shouldn't matter, right? Yep my friends and family come every year from the UK and have never had any issues

Hi - when I am running low on Morrocan Hair Oil - I have used Lee Stafford Argan Oil - have seen a few here = shampoos, condition, spray on version & actual oil. Its in a pink coloured bottles etc.... and can be found in Spinneys as well as Boots!! Expect to pay 70dhs+ its not 100% pure like the MH brand but is good I knew there was one beginning with A, thank you it was on the tip of my tongue

How long has he been with his current employer and what is his highest level of education certificate? Unlimited contract, less than a year and Uni degree. As long as he is earning more than 12k and has completed 3 months probation he can change. who is working in JAFZA or is familiar with the sick leave regulation? I have been sick for 2 single days, not 2 days running, separate. My contract says I am entiteld to 15 days sick leave per year with full remuneration. Nothing is mentionned that I need a doctor's certificate. Now my company has deducted these 2 days from my salary saying it will only be paid when having a doctor's certificate. My understanding is that the Labor Law states if you are off for more than 2 days you require a sick note But being 1 day sick, I do not run to the doctor straight away. Is anyone familiar with the regulations please? Thanks.

tbh, i would check with the labour department... is his company a dubai licenced company or a free zone.... the problem is that they have brought in the rule that you get an employment ban for 6 months if you have been on a companies visa for less than 2 years..... but, in the past i do know that a ban was not imposed depending on your profession and there was also the option to pay to have the ban lifted if they wanted to go elsewhere.... obviously, with this new ruling... i am not sure if there are any loopholes.... so, why not give them a call and see what they say..... In Jan 2011 they made a ruling based on salary and education It used to be 3 years and an NOC prior to Jan 2011 I work in HR and we have dealt with the above for eons :-)

Thanks for the replies ladies. I did a search and couldn't find anything recent or in the UAE . Sounds like I'm going to have to assume it will be on the low end to see if it makes sense for me to work. Then I'll go from there and just figure it out as I get to applying (or not). I also believe that if you are hired internationally you receive housing on top of salary if is a local hire then it is given within your monthly salary.

Hi ladies From my previous thread Ive been wanting to buy a primer but wasnt sure which one was right for my skin type; anyhow most of posters have recommended Bare Minerals one - Prime Time. So I decided to go Sephora at MOE then for some reason they wanted me to buy they own sephora primer the silicon type one..asking loads of questions as Ive already set my eyes on the BM one. Them saying its exctly the same product its just in the name blah blah has the same ingrediants blah blah ....I thought ok as its 65dhs I thought I give it a try. Now ive worn this primer for 2 days and last night looked in the mirror and it appears I have small bumpy pimples .. some kind of allergic reaction.. Now Im so tempted to go back and tell them what has happened and whether they can give me a credit note ... Your thought please ladies...before I go back looking stupid TIA I have used their own make before and never had problems. It could be an allergic reaction however all of them mainly have the same ingredients and you pay for the name

My first post to EW readers....I have just moved to Dubai and have had several maids knock door but turned them away as not requiring live in maid. However would like to have someone clean for 4 hrs on 2/3 days per week. I've had a maid ask me if she can work for me part time for a few hours but she already lives with a family in next street who sponsers her etc and they don't have problem with this arrangement. What are the legalities of this ? Hello Welcome to EW. Legally a maid has to be sponsored by a family or the agency she works for. They are not allowed to work for any other person if sponsored by a family. If found out she could be deported and a HUGE fine is incurred. Agency is the best way forward

I have poker straight hair that really repels being curled (too bad for it, I love curly hair) and hands down the best curler I've ever used is one of those beveled edge straighteners - gets the job done super fast, too. I got mine from Maria Dowling, but I bet most decent brands work just as well. I'm quite curious to try one of the conical clipless curling irons, though. I get quite tight curls from the beveled edge straightener and I wonder if the cone shaped ones would give me something looser or wavier? I have the cloud nine wand and you can get all types of curls with it I cannot use it myself as i am useless however my hairdresser and friend have used it on me and the effects are fab!

I regularly buy Quorn mince at the Choitrams opposite Safa park on Al Wasl rd (unpunctured bags :) ). It sells quickly but they do seem to get regular supplies. Al Maya at Murooj Rotana sells Linda McCartney mince - as well as a good range of the other products. Choitrhams at the Greens sells it too

They can also never tell you when they will get things that are out of stock, back in stock! Helpful, how many sales they must lose with useless salespersons! has anyone noticed stores, esp in Mercato suddenly recruiting or having sales staff over from the UK to show the UAE staff how it is done!! It has been quite amusing to watch! Useless salespersons?? That's a bit harsh, don't you think...they are doing their best with the tools they have been given..Most of these Beauty consultants have other degrees/diplomas and aren't working in their field, they are like you and me trying to make a living..You seem to think that sales staff in the western countries are "better" well that's simply not true.. ..you cannot generalize like that... I dont understand why people have to complain and bash people in this country..It is what it is!! You are entitled to your opinion as we are however, i have yet to find a decent sales person in all the years that i have lived here. You get pounced on as soon as you walk in to the store or stalked round it. If you ask for something and it is out of stock they never advise they will call another store etc. Personally speaking (And i am not saying i am better than anyone regardless of where they are from) However the customer service in this part of the world is awful and needs to be address by the owners etc

I see it like this, I would seriously question anywhere that offers 'specials' for things like Botox - means they need the business and there might be a very good reason behind that. Not necessarily, alot of them do it and i have used the special offers and never had issues. They always used the good stuff and a have had a qualified and registered cosmetic surgeon administer it. All i would check is what product they use and who the DR is.

One of the most annoying things here - all the mattress sizes! lutzkk, unless you stick to only the US stores here (or bring everything bedding related with you) be prepared to stop referring to sizes as queen king etc - but by dimensions in cm. We bought a "king" mattress here from a store called intercoil...hadnt thought of the dimension issues...and it turns out its half between a US queen and a US king. so either i have king size sheets from home that are too big or i hunt around for this off size 180x200cm here. Called everything from Queen to Extra Queen to just 180x200 depending on the origin of the store I'm in. Grrrrrr I am trying to get a matress topper and have the same size as above all are too small or too big grrrr yet the size mattress above is popular. I have found Al Maya at lamcy and Matalan do sheets to fit but there arent many other shops

Please can you advice. We don't have any allowance for school fees through by DH's job but people keep telling me that there is a law that a company must contribute at least 50 percent. Is that right, are there any laws? If so could you please let me know where I can find out more myself?? Thanks No laws and never has been. It is up to individual employers and there is nothing in the labor law with regards to it being law

I've recovered very quickily (up and about from the evening of the c-section) but exercise is still a big no no from my OBGYN. I realise she's got a point because the days I do a bit too much house work I start bleeding again. Ugh. So exercise wise I'm highly restricted for now it seems so dieting is my only friend. I'm not breastfeeding so that isn't a problem either. The thing with dieting though is that when your at home alone all day its difficult to not eat! So I think for me its important I follow a particular diet regime rather than be independent and cut out some food groups because I'm seriously not sensible enough to stick to that. I've also heard about this world slimmers or something? Whats that like? Slimming world is very good, i did it years ago and lost quite a bit in a short time Are you able to walk if you cannot do rigorous exercise Try this app it lists all the food and their calories www.myfitnesspal.com you can communicate with other people on it too! Sorry but is this one of those regimes where you have weekly meetingsas a group to talk about how your going to overcome being fat? I REALLY dont want to do that! Just looking for a good diet regime for example atkins not in the sense that its a good diet plan but it has simple instructions and you just go away and do it! You can do it online and i think spinneys sell the magazines it isnt difficult and you dont have to eat sawdust or yoghurt 3 times a day. It is healthy eating plan not a diet! plus you can vary what you eat the fad starvation ones work for a while but all of it will pile back on :-)
