Hi. My husband and I are moving to Dubai from the uk in November with our one year old son. My husband has been offered a good job with medical insurance but we need to know whether we need to take out additional insurance for living abroad, much like we would do if we were on holiday. We have looked but the prices are extortionate. What do all other expats do? basic medical coverage will be provided, in abu dhabi it has to be provided for spouse and upto 3 children, in dubai its not the case, sometimes just the employee. if you need to travel then you buy travel insurance It isnt law in Dubai either so not all companies give it!

I've heard of a few diets- cambridge, duken etc but I want to find out with which one people have had the most success. I have alot of family and friends in UK who will all start visiting soon to see LO and unless I lose my tubbyness I will be putting them all of from coming Am I insecure about my weight? Yes! I was 65kg and very happy when I came to Dubai and now post baby and post brunches I've gone up to a whopping 85kg. So PLEASE help me with the best diet/exercise regime to lose the flab and fast! Cambridge personally i found was dangerous, calories far too low, i nearly keeled over and couldnt keep it up plus the foods were vile. Easy to put it all back on aswell. Dukan the 2nd phase is okay but the first was awful. It did work but maintaining was so difficult and the food choices were boring. If you have an android phone download myfitnesspal this is great for counting calories, personally speaking WW and SW are the best two as you are not limited to what you can eat. I lose weight easily with both and dont feel hungry. In the first week expect around 4-6llb then 2lb thereafter. Take your time though the longer it takes to come off the more likely it is to staff off Good luck

Just got my bike trailer out of its 6 week hibernation in the back garden since exiting the container it arrived in, was going to take the kids for swim lessons by bike as I can't drive until visa comes through, however there is some serious amount of wildlife now occupying said trailer, loads and loads of grasshopper kind of looking things. I will try and Hoover them all out (and hand my other half the Hoover to clean when he gets home) but if I don't get them all are they likely to bite my little ones?!! Sorry feel like a real girl asking this but I wouldn't fancy getting in it myself! In 6 years i have never been bitten by anything here. I know people have had mossie bites but that is it. I would set the hoover on them just incase. Thanks! Got the baby dyson out but it died on me in mid attack! Wll resume with Henry shortly! Think I wont mention them to the kids! Probably best all round!

I've got the Elite super 100 plan from Du for my i-phone. Will I be able to make calls while I'm abroad (in case of an emergency)? I called Du just now and I was told to call back later as they didn't have the information on this now, which is rather strange!! That is DU all over, i would try and Google. Are you pay as you go or contract? Did you set up roaming before you left?

If you want to send a gift I would use Skynet, there are no more expensive than the postal service and will give you door to door courier delivery for much less than other courier companies. For eg a half kg to Canada will cost dhs65 with Skynet and get there far quicker than the post which I would not recommend in any case as they have lost so many of my parcels. http://www.skynetworldwide.net/ I agree with Skynet i used Empost and had a nightmare with them.

Complicated issue, but cutting a long story short, he had a few parking fines and driving in bus lane at wrong time which were posted to ex wifes address (his old address) so he never received it, had to pay a huge fine for non payment, very unfair, they didn;t ban him but gave him 19 points. Then he was stopped for holding using a handsfree (wired device) which apparently illegal in the UK (never knew this) and subsequently banned. The time he drove was just the once when his mother had a seizure and he drove his brothers car to the hospital, someone tipped him off, he was not speeding! Sounds like he has a lot of excuses - if fines and summonses to appear in court went to the "wrong" address it is because he had failed to update the details on his driving licence as required by law This is also a lot of laws to break - as it is many different convictions It was never said it wasn't his fault, as said, he admitted fault here, no one is perfect, and the price has been paid. Its not an excuse its a fact! I have nothing to hide from people who dont even know him! Its not exactly you who is going to decide whether he would get a visa or not! LOL. Hilarous,I thnk you need to go have a cuppa tea and relax a little Welcome to EW Fuzzypop never mind a cup of tea hehe

I think there is some major PMT issues here on Expat Woman!! :)It was a simple question and there are some who are getting very personal like they are on the stand without even knowing anything. There are reasons for everything, and only once you know them judgement should be passed. I just wanted to let him know what the rules and regulations are, not the opnions which have already been finalised and dealt with in the UK! I think he may need to consider some of the attitudes here as well!! LOL Well people are bound to give their opinion on forums, that's something you need to expect. However, if you want to be sure, a forum is not the best place to ask if it involved the law. Maybe you should ask the UAE embassy in the UK? Very true! Differece between advice and opinion though. OP only asked a question. Let he without sin cast the first stone ;-)

Or how about Yalumba at Le Meridien near the airport, for an Aussie slant on a Dubai Brunch? I know it gets some bad press but the food including the a la carte extras are very good, the staff are attentive and friendly, the atmosphere is lively, but you could always ask for a quiet table as there are some tucked away into little alcoves. I would never take my parents to Yalumba! ;-0 well I am a parent and I take my grown up children when they visit! DD celebrated her 24th birthday there and we all had a great time. Hello, i need a maid service for my studio apt i just need someone to come and clean the house every other day it would take around 1hr for the whole house does anyone know someone that could do it? that's not too expensive my friend has 1 guy cleaning her house in burdubai for 200aed a month 3 times a week Hi you will need to use an agency as other maids have to be sponsored. I wouldnt use someone that is sponsored by another family either and doing work on the side as if caught you would incure a huge fine ( thousands i believe) plus if she is working illegally and anything happens i.e theft from you, you cannot report her as she is working illegally. This happened to a friend of mine whose maid stole from her. I would use an agency much safer all the way round

if he doesn't have his driving licence he may find it difficult to get a UAE one and i imagine his employer will need to know why he doesn't have it ?? Unless he needs it for his job why should it matter to his employers if he has one or not? We both have UAE licences but have never driven in Dubai-the taxi works out cheaper for us OP said he has a criminal record as a result of the traffic offense. I think getting a visa is of more concern than getting a driving licence with a criminal record. I can imagine there are 1000's of people here from other countries who have criminal records. I doubt they will check at all. I have heard of several high profile people here who skipped their home countries due to tax evasion and all sorts. As the other poster stated he will need his UK driving licence to be able to drive here. People break the law every day here on the roads the only difference is that they dont get caught :-)

Great suggestions ladies, thank you. I know that the Westin is very popular, but am I right in thinking that there will be lots of kids? How about Al Qasr? The Westin Bubby Brunch is lovely it is spread over all three restaurants so I would book a table in Hunters Room and Grill it is more refined and less children orientated than The Blue Orange restaurant, you can wander into all three restaurants for food. Spectrum on One at the Fairmont is good, however they only seem to serve "red"or "white" wine and not specific types as I asked for a sav Blanc and just got the generic white wine out of a carafe so I couldn't even find out what type or even brand it was, which is a bit of a concern, however later on I found out you could order spirit mixers or cocktails from the bar. Or how about Yalumba at Le Meridien near the airport, for an Aussie slant on a Dubai Brunch? However driving while disqualified is regarded as a much more serious criminal offense in the UK rather than a traffic offence such as speeding. I sat on a UK jury for a "driving while disqualified" case and the guy was imprisoned Shame they dont adopt that here for all the bad driving. Their would be a significant drop in the amount of fatalities and accidents! They kinda do; if you get so many fines; it goes to court; the problem is that it is SOOOOOO many fines before it gets to that point. It's better than it was;it used to be a blanket 200 aed for no matter how fast you were going. I dont think it is better than it was, a lady incurred nearly 200,000AED worth of fines and gets to pay it in installments. She should be banned for life, using your phone incures a 200AED fine! You can even pay to stop your car being impounded. How about policing the roads to stop the loonies. I have been smashed into 3 times in a space of 6 years ( and it wasn't my fault) someone reversed into me at a red traffic light. In 20 years of driving in the Uk not one accident. The loonies don't care here and where in the world gives you a year to pay your fines? I have seen more fatalities in the last 4 years here than i care to mention. Decreasing the cost of fines and giving people incentives to drive better does not work at all. How many cars to we think are registered or even insured here as they are never checked. A friend of mine drove for 3 years with no registration and got a 200AED fine only.. Beggars belief really. :-) edited by louisedvs on 13/09/2012

I was told 7000AED from Carrefour, Jumbo and Sharaf What!!! if that's correct info they're given you then they're insane as everyone will just do what we're going to and buy from AED 3000 from the UK or elsewhere... 7000 as a starting price is disgraceful and a great example of why Dubai is nowhere close to being a shopping hub anymore. I know i rarely buy anything here now as the UK is soooo much cheaper. They say we are tax free however personally i feel that is only on my salary nothing else!

What do you mean that what he did was of no threat to the public? He was driving whilst disqualified - therefore no insurance etc - and obvously has complete disregard for the rule of law in the UK. There are enough idiot drivers in the UAE without another being added to their number. Hi. I mean he wasn't running around killing people! Driving without insurance (although wrong) is hardly a threat to the public, it would just mean he needs to cough up all expenses incurred. Thank you for the time you took in replying, although I did ask for some enlightenment on the law, not your nasty opinion on the person who you do not know and have no idea of the cause of the ban, ever heard of a 'unfair trial? He paid the price thank you and admited fault. I guess one thing in Dubai I will need to tell warn him about is the need to put up with some of the expat brats who come here with inflamed heads thinking they are superior enough to pass their judgments to anyone and everyone. Maybe you have also heard of the saying, if you have nothing nice to say, dont say anything. Thank you to the others for all your useful comments. :) Wait till he sees how bad the driving standards are here and all nationals are guilty of that. It pales into comparison against the ex pat brat community lol

I haven't seen the video but have read about it online, I can't say I'm that impressed. Thinner, lighter, faster, better camera...nothing more than what you usually get with an upgraded model. I was expecting a device that would clean the house, look after the kids, and go to work for me... No but seriously, did I miss something? The 4S at least had Siri which was something new, nothing jumps out at me that has the "I need this now" factor. Agree and no doubt there will be a 6 in a year too! the screen is bigger too apparently. I will stick with my reliable 4

My old car had a slight problem with it that my husband says he can fix in 5 minutes, so not an issue. I got a new car in November and my husband still hasnt fixed my old car and it remains in the driveway. My registration ran out in December and my insurance in January and my traffic file was cancelled as per a text I received from them. Eventually my husband will fix the car , I hope! but do I need 13 months insurance and have to re register the vehicle in order to sell it? any info appreciated, or even who to call to ask about it. Thanks. My colleague has advised that when the car is re-registered you will pay a fine for the time from Dec ( until registered) insurance i dont know perhaps call an insurer here

If it's open until 8pm, it would be really convenient, but it will be a 25 minute taxi journey so I don't want to take the chance and find it shut. Has anyone been there and found it open late in the day? TIA! Do u mean the registration car place or the place where you get your driving licence The car regsitration place is open until 8pm but the licencing place 2pm

It definitely is needed especially for bigger busted ladies as the swimsuits here are usually just little triangles of fabric! If you could supply properly sized, underwired, padded etc. non frumpy swimwear you could do well. Also if you could buy tops/bottoms separately that would be great. A lot of women might be a size 10 bottoms but size 12 top for e.g. Delivery could work locally, why not. Just do cash on delivery - you could even do your own deliveries when starting out to save on costs. I know an online jewellery shop which does it this way and I think it's very smart. Convenient and easy. Try Matalan i have lots of mix and match bikinis from there and all in different colours and styles ( none are indecent) i need an 18 top and 12 bottom and get them all from either there, New Look, Debenhams or M&S. There is plenty of choice and in the Matalan sale earlier in the year i got a bikini for 12AED!

as a visitor (ie not got visa yet) you cannot drive with uk licence a private vehicle, you can only drive a rental car. only uae driving licence can drive private cars. RTA have told me with Uk and IDP I can drive our own car if on visit visa until the point that residency visa is applied for, and insurance said as long as RTA fine then insurance is valid. (3 times I called them to make sure I got the same story each time)x no before you could get a temp licence but they have stopped that, you cannot use your uk licence was residence visa is started, then you must apply for uae licence was you have visa. This isnt correct. RTA told me last week that you can drive a first degree relatives (e.g. husband, parent etc) UAE-registered car on a UK licence and be fully covered by insurance. If you have an International driving licence you can drive any UAE registered car. Both only apply while you dont have your residency visa...after that it gets messy!!! i would get that in writing first...... heard that many times, and problem is then insurance do not cover you The above quote is correct my friend was in a accident and even though the RTA and the insurers said she was okay to drive DH car insurance refused to pay out Be very careful!
