Have you thought about advertising on the board at Spinneys etc? There are a lot of maids out there that do part time work for 25aed an hour. Most of them are after extra work... Part time work is illegal, maids either have to be sponsored by you or an agency If they get caight you will incur a whopping fine and she will be on the first plane home.

I used to fly DXB to LHR then with BMI ( Before the DXB Dublin route) You wont get 30kg with BMI, Easyjet etc it is usually one bag that has to fit in the thing at the check in desk. You can buy extra luggage from the website ( for the UK flight)

local law gives all support to the male of the species, whatever the rights and wrongs of things. . I actually disagree with this, and think that you should approach the local court here, they will be quite sympathetic. Obviously you cannot stay in the company accommodation, but he has to provide appropriate housing for you. At least for the short term. Apologies, I should have written "from what I have read on EW and elsewhere, I understand that local law.." etc.. Ah - EW the legal guru!!!!! I only commented on this as it happened to a couple of my friends and they tried to take it to the courts and got nowhere :-( hopefully the poster will get some support with this

Really interesting to read that such expensive and luxury cars which are suppose to be better quality have these kinds of basic problems that cost so much to fix. It is the heat though unfortunately has happened to alot of different cars here however i wont go to the dealer for things like that

There are lots of movies and TV shows that I don't understand how they don't get banned but then SATC was banned just because of the title? Some movies are censored so much, I wonder why they bother releasing it here in the first place. not just the title; they totally belittled and ridiculed the UAE And they were trying to help us save money by not watching a flick filmed in Morocco where the Indian hotel staff member is one of the "hot guys"... I wish I'd heeded their warning and not watched away 2 hrs of my life... me too....... waste of time and shockingly bad....... Awful and i have always been a huge fan

Yikes, am I right in thinking that it only applies to villas? Little old me with my 1BD over here shouldn't have to face that too? Seriously need to consider the merits of home cooked food vs Take out again! After today I may never turn on the oven again! (oh, and on top of this, spent 3 hours boiling evaporated milk instead of condensed milk yesterday for my banoffee pie.....) I thought the housing fee applied to everyone, whether or not they lived in apartments - take a look at your DEWA bills and you'll see whether or not it has been applied. In any case, if you are already paying it, it will stay the same from month to month and is on the DEWA bill already. Housing fee applies to everyone it just depends if they make you fill in the amount of rent in the red box when you register at DEWA. I got away with it for 5 years however now pay it

Hi there, I've finally gone over to a blackberry and am on the AED49 per month tariff with Etisalat. That does not cover net access and yet I can get apps like facebook, twitter, goole chat, msn messenger and yahoo chat. What I'm wanting to know is: can I access my gmail email account as an app - does anyone else do this? Or do I have to pay the extra per month and have net access? I really don't understand it! I have the option to email from my google chat and it's loaded up all my contacts but when it came to send a mail there was no 'send' option! TIA - hope this isn't too confusing! I cant access my email ( hotmail) on the 49AED they told me i would need to increase it to the 99AED package. I assume it is the same for gmail

Shop staff aren't doing anything! They aren't the ones singing the lyrics. Them choosing to ignore your request to turn off the music is from ignorance and due to potential language barriers and not fully understanding (or even paying attention to) the lyrics. Thus, they don't realize the seriousness of your request to turn off such music. Yes they are - tehy are playing the songs and most are fully aware as they are usually singing them (out of tune i might add). And the f word is universal!

OK, 4 bed villa in Meadows: April to May: up nearly AED700; May to June: up another AED225; June to July: down AED 375. The house was empty for 8 days in July. And I think the gardener may have told me he was stopping watering during Ramadan, but as we don't understand each other, I could have that wrong. Brilliant. Louise, what is Housing? I fail to comprehend why, when absent for 15 days, the bill is 10aed less than the previous month, which itself was about 100aed higher than the month before and that was when i was away for nearly a week. I dread to think what the bill will be like next month as: -I'm not leaving the country -I'm washing every piece of clothing that gets drenched in sweat after 1 wear. -I'm home earlier from the office and therefore using more "things" at home I hate inconsistencies!!! It is an amount they deduct ( not everyone has been stiffed for it though) probably similar to council tax in the UK ( or rates) 5% of annual rent divided by 12

MS is right - the moment you stop looking, you meet someone. Totally agree that the Dubai dating scene is a minefield of total losers, players and idiots. Avoid crowded nightclubs, brunches, bars, and find activities you enjoy doing or even those you don't - try something new and for sure you'll meet people. Be sociable and chatty, catch people's eyes, look approachable. The girls who glam it up the most - b00bs out, short skirts, fake hair, etc are the ones who attract the guys who are just looking for a good time IMO. Be natural. I met someone while working out all sweaty in the gym! Also don't waste time on someone who is either in the wrong headspace (not ready to commit), who gives you bad signals from day one (game playing) or who just isn't that into you (you're doing all the chasing). Don't take it personally - move on - there are plenty of fish in the sea. Avoid anyone with commitment issues, financial dramas, or who has a very different outlook with views that in the long term will be incompatible with yours. Not saying you can't overcome these if you're in love but you need to get on with them and have some similar views I think. Don't be overly aggressive or pushy or have ridiculous expectations. I have a friend who is so demanding and has such high standards that guys run for the hills - she's single after 2 years and wonders why no one wants to date her when she judges them on absolutely everything. Above all have fun! Have a few on the go at once and keep your options open! It is tiring but looking back, I did enjoy being out all the time and having various suitors sniffing around lol! Wise words :-)

the ceiling of my car is falling off. I mean the fabric. I took it to the dealership and they said its because of the heat. They want me to wait 3 months to get it replaced and asked me to pay 4000 dhs... is that reasonable? Mine has dropped too. Havent been to VW yet though. May go to a cheapy garage in Al Quoz ,3 months and 4000AED?? mask and stripey jumper springs to mind!

En Vogue Salon in the Marina was playing Eminem when I was there, and then Lily Allen's F*ck you and the rest. There was a five year sitting next to me, so i asked teh receptionist to change the music. She didn't seem to care or try to understand why children shouldn't be exposed to such language. (Also, shocking treatments/cut/colour in that salon) I remember being at the outlet mall two years ago during Ramadan and Nine West were playing Akons f you song! I was horrified and the staff didnt seem to notice even though it was blaring away!!

Ohhh nooo. i had my heart set on the mini :( Thanks so much ladies..this is v helpful so i guess its between the audi, VW and volvo.. Anyone else who can help me narrow it down based on their experiences - especially if you have had one or more of the above cars to experience.. I have always had golfs ( GTI's and above) love the fact that they are reliable, safe and go on for forever. My car has so many airbags and yet is still fast and sporty. Heated leather seats are never used though. I service at VW and have never paid a fortune. Only problem is that the servicing/repairs are done at Rashadiya not SZR

Is makeup forever good? If MAC mixed the colour I would need to buy two bottles separately right? I like Makeup forever and the mac match one I had my makeup done in the UK and at illamasque she had to use 2 different colours ( so i bought 2 different bottles) however the coverage was amazing! ( I have very red cheeks) Personally speaking i find the makeup ladies here pretty useless

Yesterday I visited MAC and they weren't able to find my colour. Either the colour would be too light or too dark and all the foundations seemed so so oily. I then tried Sephora's own brand liquid foundation which was also no good and bare minerals which bought out my acne marks rather then hide them and also itched me. So now I'm back to square one with no idea of what foundation to buy. Can anybody provide any recommendations? Is makeup forever hd foundation available in Dubai? Makeup forever HD is available Paris Gallery sell it at Lamcy Illamasque at Bloomies is a good one too Why couldnt MAC mix two colours? i am sure they could of found one to suit your tone

MOC for a 1 bed I don't think she'd get through entire bottles of each item once per month - maybe for a big villa but certainly not a small apartment. I'd say each would last 3 months and I don't personally buy all those different kinds of cleaners - mainly bleach, floor cleaner, toilet cleaner, kitchen and bathroom spray, glass spray and not much else. White vinegar works best on taps IMO and cheap as chips! That said - I spend about 600dhs a month on a big shop for 2 of us (including all cleaning stuff, toiletries, household items) and then 300 - 400dh per week on groceries including meat, fish, veg etc. We shop in Spinneys because it's closest but if we went to Lulu / Union Co-op I'm sure it would be less. The other thing to bear in mind when living as a single lady is that you're still paying for things like all the cleaning stuff listed below just for 1 person, as well as Du / internet, any maintenance etc so it is expensive to live alone. When I got married, I was pleasantly surprised at how the bills seemed so much less per person, even grocery shopping as cooking for one sucks! I have OCD when it comes to cleaning ( ex army wife) and even i dont go through entire bottles of cleaning products once a month. Once every 2 months at a push and i am in a 1 bed apartment

Thank you for all the replies. I have a few questions: 1- Is "Bare Minerals" a brand or is it actually bare minerals i can find from any brand? 2- If i can't get bare minerals, what other foundation do you recommend? 3- If i want to conceal the darkness under my eyes, do i apply concealer under the foundation? 4- Do all brushes have the same names/numbers or do they differ from brand to brand? edited by D-J on 31/07/2012 1. bareMinerals is the name of an actual brand 2. Best idea would be to drop in Sephora, Dubai Mall and try a few different foundations on your wrist then walk around the mall for a couple of hours and see how they stand up to the time test 3. You can apply concealer under the eyes to conceal under-eye circles however I like to get concealer wheels as they have different concealer for under-eye, red spots, et cetera 4. Make up brushes numbers differ from brand to brand. If you're not a make up addict - you only need a few basic brushes to start with: foundation brush, concealer brush, powder brush, bronzing brush and 3-4 eye brushes Concealer after foundation and personally touch eclait is the best i have ever used Dot it on then use ring fingers to pat it evenly I use a brush for foundation goes on so much better than a sponge or fingers

When I say avail -- You know how the bb package has to be renewed every month. Well, Etisalat had this promotion for a fortnight (I can't remember WHY) and if you renewed your social package in that period .. You could have a certain amount of internet browsing (including whatsapp) free for a limited period. I have the 49AED one and no longer can use whats app only FB and BBM

My 5 years gratuity is coming up in March 2013. I am on an unlimited contract and am required to give 3 months notice. I would like to resign in December and I'm hoping that my 3 months notice period is still calculated into my gratuity to ensure I get the full 5 years payment. Does anyone know if my company has to legally include my notice period as part of my gratuity? Thanks. Your EOSB is paid from the day you start to your very last day working day with the company. Brilliant!! Thank you. (sorry to be dim but what does EOSB stand for?) End of service benefits Thank you! So many intials for things here easy to not know or understand haha

I agree 'God Save the Queen' is the British National Anthem Maybe, the reluctance comes from in football and Rugby competitions the England team sing the British National anthem when representing England (not Britain) whereas the other home nations sing their own country anthems. Maybe England should have their own country anthem too? or when England play Scotland should the same British anthem be played for both teams? Thoughts? Land of hope and glory! A much better song :-)

Ladies in the Greens: do you find traffic a problem? I love the community feel but I often see big lines going off SZR in the evenings which concerns me. Hello I work close to the Trade Centre and live at the Greens 17 minutes to get in, 20 to get home ( however most of that is spent getting out of the works carpark) traffic not bad at all and flows quickly

Has anyone been to Posh at Burj Al Arab or the Address Hotel for a haircut? Was it any good and who do your recommend there to do your hair? Ive had a couple disasters with my last few cuts so really need someone good this time! To be honest just because a hairdresser is within a super star hotel does not necessarily mean the hairdressers will be the best. I know someone who went to the Burj ( there was an offer on) and she said the service and the cut was awful Ted Morgan, Salon Ink and Maria Dowling tend to be the top 3 faves I am really fussy with my hair and have had many disasters over the years ( In Dubai) and will only go to Kelly or Ali at Salon Ink

I've lived at the Greens (briefly) and the Ranches. I love the Ranches. The Greens is nice but apartment living is not for me. Would recommend it if you don't mind apartments though. edited by Daza on 30/07/2012 I love the Ranches too ( have several friends there) if i was to chose a villa i would say the Ranches. I went back to the Marina at the weekend ( where i used to live) and the area looked awful. Run down, dirty buildings, construction everywhere. I was shocked. Emaar do fantastic developments and the fact we have trees and the lakes makes me happy ( P.S) my building wasnt at JBR or the close to the original 4 buildings ( I don't want to offend anyone)
