I do miss Dubai pre 2008 though :-) Me too :( I also dont like the person I am becoming here. I have noticed the last two years especially I am not the friendly bubbly person I used to be....in fact I'm becoming the opposite. I never used to get stressed or cynical now i am both and do not get me started on the male of the species here agh!

Just seems everything lately makes me stress out, I'm always ranting and raving, this just isn't me at all. Could that be the Summer though? Everyone i know is fed up at the moment and it is usual this time of year. I yearn for the UK but know if i do go back i would be equally miserable plus it hasn't stopped raining I do miss Dubai pre 2008 though :-)

happens so often. In my previous apartment there were people above me who kept doing it and I had to keep my balcony door closed at all times (incl winter) because a lit butt came into the living room one day, and onto our carpet! And often found cig butts all over the balcony. At the moment there are pictures up in our Jbr tower with photos of burnt clothing & furniture and notices urging people not to do it anymore. Its really irresponsible and plain dumb! edited by hilsbils on 08/06/2012 I had one guy throw one off and it landed on my head! A 2nd one landed on my nice, clean washing and burnt clothing. At that point i lost it and went upstairs to bang on their door. They did not answer so i bought them an ashtray, attached a post it note saying please use this in future or i will call the police. Never happened again

Rose ... Are you looking to let out your Villa soon? We are an Irish family 2+2 moving in Mid Sept. My DH is travelling in Aug and we are looking for a villa to rent. Min stay 3yrs. We are looking around the Springs area as our boys will be going to DBS. If you are interested in contacting me I will forward my email so we can discuss off the forum. Cheers, Irish101 I think short terms rentals are for a few months rental contracts here are usually for 1 year however can be renewable, most people move around alot due to rental prices changing :-)

Yes ..I agree about the KLM (and Lufthansa) food. Its so bland. On Lufthansa the crew went to sleep after 4 hours and a stale roll, salami and cheese was not to my liking lol! They also served campari or whisky as a cocktail yuk! Have only had one snooty, surly Emirates crew member in 7 years. Love the food, free booze and the entertainment. Once they realise you live in Dubai i feel they treat you better, flew with some great crew who were fab!

i recently did a 24 hour flight alone and pregnant with my 19 month old son.. it was actually not bad at all,he was very well behaved but i did dread it a lot! i bought him some new books as he loves to read( those small ones that comes in a pack of 5 or so) and bought him 2 new trains especially for the flight. He was playing with the trains a lot and also read the books over and over again. he also had fun taking the table up and down and just looking out the window and at other passengers..i also brought crayons and paper for him to draw on and took some empty coffecups with lids and straws from a coffe shop. this kept him entartained, and of course we did walks now and then.. in terms of food im glad i brought food with me as he didnt want to eat anything that was offered to him.. i brought sandwiches ,and he loves fruits and veggies so brought lots of that too,and milk.. he watched a bit of tv but wasnt too interested in it,was more fun playing with the tv itself.. wish u good luck as even as well behaved as he was it was exhausting but that was probably due to my pregnancy! Having brought up 2 children and travelled extensively with them from babyhood, I understand the potential problems keeping children amused and occupied on a long flight. However >> DH and I are just back from holiday involving two 5 hour flights. On the journey out, I had a toddler behind me who played constantly with the folding table, banging it up and down. When he wasn't rattling my seat with that, his little shoed feet booted me in the base of my spine. Polite requests to the parents to try and prevent the child from doing these things were met with hostile disbelief that anyone could possibly be annoyed by their darling child. He eventually fell asleep so I had about an hours peace. At one point, the little cherub grabbed the back of my seat, trapping my hair in his little fingers. I decided at this point to go to the loo and on passing the family, asked one more time if they could please try and stop their son from using my seat to bounce off etc!! I do understand the difficulties but I somehow managed to keep my tots amused without them being a source of annoyance to other passengers. And the reward for being the best parent goes to joyceb. No need for that comment at all. I made plenty of mistakes bringing up my children, believe me. All I am saying is that as much as I understand the difficulties in keeping tots amused in a confined space for a few hours, these parents made little attempt to control their son who was about 3. The people behind this family also had issues with them and at one point a cabin crew member spoke to them about the toddler jumping on the seat causing the lady behind to spill her drink. The parents were loud and most indignant that anyone should dare to complain. I travelled with a 3 year old and baby DS many times and while he slept much of the time, our DD was made to sit on her seat and play with stuff we had provided as many other parents manage to do very well. There are plenty of parents who manage their children beautifully but sadly there are others who couldn't care less about how their children's behaviour can impact on others. I am with you on this. I had a night flight to Bankok and the three kids in front of me, constantly jumped all over the seats, kept reclining their seats backwards and forwards for an hour, switched the overhead reading light on and off continually ( cabin lights were dimmed), they kept demanding coca cola from the crew and the Mum sat there ignoring them. I was aghast. I appreciate how tough it must be with children who are bored but these 3 were unruly and disturbed everyone. They fell asleep half an hour before landing and screamed like banshees when woken...

I've always liked KLM - polite crew, nice food (I usually cannot eat airplane food) and good leg room. I've only flown Emirates while travelling to India and it's okay - hardly any leg room though... Emirates have a slightly larger seat pitch than KLM at 31", i found the food on KLM awful.

Hi I just moved to a small house and a big window is facing a garden and the street and I would like to put a foil on the window to simply protect my living area against unwanted glances from outside ... Where can I buy this kind of foil? Why not hang some sheer curtains or voile. My apartment is on the ground floor and i have this to stop people walking by seeing in. Lots of the curtain shops/ikea sell these items

I'm not Greek but know a few things here and there... It's better to go to the Islands during summer. During summer all of mainland Greece moves to the Islands to work. Plus Athens is not a cheap city of what I remember (I lived in Greece years ago, and a coffee was 5 euro!) I would suggest to go to Crete and stay in Agios Nikolaios. It's a lovely little place. Or stay in Rethymno. Avoid Chersonissos and Malia, they are boozing villages for teenagers and young adults and there tends to be a lot of fighting (I used to work in Chersonissos, it's a mess lol) HTH:) My Sister went to Crete last year and said for a pint of beer it was 8 Euros and a bacardi and coke was 10 Euros! I've checked the usual places, Carrefour and office stationary supplies stores, but I can't seem to find a decent day planner for sale in Dubai?? ( despite my iphone and cool apps, I just can't get through life without an old fashioned paper planner) My next thought is to try Borders or something like it ? Does anyone know if there is a Borders located anywhere other than Mall of Emirates? A small one at Dubai Marina Mall and Ibn Battuta

You will be told by many Muslims that they don't mind and you should go ahead blah blah, but please keep it in mind that there is a law in place and you can be prosecuted for eating/drinking/revealing clothes anywhere outside of your home during the holy month of Ramadan. If a coffee shop or other outlet sells the item, do not think it is automatically ok to consume it, you must ensure that you are hidden away. If you go to a hotel in another Emirate, be particularly careful, especially if you fall under the Sharjah zone. My husband goes to the gym when he is fasting, so there must be others fasting at the gym. In light of the comments above, does that mean the places in the DIFC are acting illegally (and we are breaking the law)? Or are free zones (or this one at least) different? It says in a public place however lots of the hotels, FZ and MOE put screens up I doubt this is illegal as it is done every year

Hi Ladies, Thank you so much for the details below..I am now looking at the following as per all your advise and will narrow it down by calling the restaurants to find out further details: 1. Mezza House (near Burj Khalifa), 2. Loui's (down Town), 3. Shakespeare on Sheikh Zayed, 4.W on Sheikh Z, 5. Shu on beach road Ideally I would want a bar type place with licence only because we want to make a night of it so go late after dinner and relax there so looking for a nice bar type atmosphere and not necessary for people who are there to eat and leave..We aren't planning to have dinner..just shisha, desserts, drinks..Ive already been to Reem Al Bawadi but again its a very restaurant type atmosphere and you don't really get a chance to mingle with other people..i know we are better off going to a bar but we do want to have shisha.. If any of you can help me narrow down my options from the above, please do assist. Thank you so much once again Shakespeares and Shu arent licenced i dont think as they arent attached to hotels

This is the rule every year, nothing has changed. Doesn't mean that all companies actually comply with it, it's impossible to enforce. DIFC ruling was the only one that didn't have to comply ( Unless you were Muslim)

Hello ladies If any of you were working in the DIFC and received an end of service gratuity payment did your employer calculate it on calendar days or business days? My first employer calculated it on business days whereas my current employer is trying to say it should be calendar days. There is reference in the relevant law to a day being a "business day" but would be grateful for your experiences. Thanks in advance. Labor law stipulates calendar

Am I the only one who can't see the need for a phone to play games-my ancient Nokia makes and takes calls-no camera-no apps-no nothing-and like it like that! Drives me crazy to see people sitting together for lunch fiddling around on their phones and not talking to each other. Sat on the metro the other day and the couple next to us texted each other the whole way...... I was on holiday with a friend once who spent the entire time texting. I got that frustrated i actually grabbed her phone and threw it into the road. As you can imagine she wasnt happy however i didn't really care! We have a written rule then when out with the girls no texting unless in the ladies.. It really winds me up and is so blimmin rude.

I've breastfed in cafes and restaurants here for 15 months and never had so much as a strange look. I use a cover but have seen a woman in niqab who just had her breast out with no cover and noone seemed shocked by it. I think it kind of fits in with the region's general pro family approach. whilst i understand that why are B@@bs black pen marked out in practically every publication?

In all my years here i have never seen anyone nurse in public Are there not mother/baby rooms in the malls etc for this? maybe you haven't [i'>[/i'>noticed[i'>[/i'> a woman nursing her baby in public but believe me it's happening everywhere, as for mother/baby rooms, it's no fun to sit in them for 30-40 mins which is how long it can take in the early days, there is no need to hide away, it's perfectly acceptable to nurse in public and you do not need to cover yourself in a blanket. I've never used a cover in 19 months It wouldnt bother me one bit and being from the UK i am used to it however in all my years here i have never seen anyone or know of any of my friends who have done it. We all stand corrected :-)
