I was told by an estate agent last week that the changes made re house buying and mortgages ie 50 % deposit is a deliberate attempt to stop people buying and rent the existing property............sounds crazy, I know but think about it ..................... Thats what I said last week when people were discussing the rent increases - funny how this has coincided with the new mortgage rules. But then someone else commented that they have backtracked on the 50% down payment rules. Obviously fewer mortgages means fewer people buying therefore more renting = higher prices due to higher demand. I would have thought real estate agents would prefer people to buy as they get higher commissions on sold properties whereas only a few thousand for rentals. Surely more churn in the market means more money all round? I don't get how they think sometimes... When the UAE real estate market crashed a few years ago the rents came down so surely if less people are buying as it was in 2009 onwards surely it should be the same I am confused by all of this sorry Im confused too Louise!! I think there was a huge exodus then too, in 2009. I remember a lot of people losing jobs and half of my friends going home! Any economists out there who can please explain this to us?? Thanks! :) I do wonder if it is market manipulation though to make it look as if the real estate market is on the up again when really it isnt. My friend who works in real estate said the biggest buyers now are African and Iranian nationals

I need to get a copy of my graduation certificate from 1986. Since then the Poly has become a Uni so I contact them. They have no records pre 1992, but give me the relevant place to contact at the OU. So I phone them. They tell me I'm not in their system and should be in the Uni system. Explain what Uni woman told me re pre 1992. He said email in a request which they're not supposed to but since I've spoken to him it'll be OK. So I've done that now.... Meanwhile, looking at O and A level certificates (thinking it's possibly easier to get them and 'forget' about the higher education qualification) - How the heck am I supposed to know which subject was under which exam board after all this time! And at £40 ish a qualification (which is what one website is asking and I'm presuming this means per subject) that's a huge financial ouch when you took 12 O levels and 4 A levels with no guarantee they'll dig them up either. Meanwhile (again), I've contacted my friend who lives opposite our rented out house to see if she'll go up in my loft to dig around (potentially for hours!) amongst the cobwebs to find the certificates that I'm 95% certain are in there somewhere. But the flipping tenants are on holiday. AAAAGGGGHHHHHH! Anyone else had issues like this? If so how did you get around them? I'm wondering whether if I removed my qualfications from my CV that'd be the best way forward if I can't get a copy with any of the above methods. Rant over - sorry ladies! edited by october on 13/02/2013 I left school in 1989 and when i moved here applied for mine I had to apply to 3 different boards, pay 20GBP to each and once they had located the correct board they refunded the difference. It was a palaver to say the least

If things are that tough here with regard to finding accommodation and school fees, why do people stay? Especially if British, where you can get free schooling and a lot more financial assistance in the UK. People don't always have the option. In Europe it isn't easy now finding jobs. But in the UK; you can get assistance. Is the UK just handing out cash to middle-income families?. You make it sound so easy. Ayzzy if you're suggesting that people give up jobs here because things are a bit tight to go back to England to sign on the dole and get free schooling then I know where I'd rather be!! People are struggling everywhere - my friends in the UK tell me how they haven't' had pay rises in years and yet the cost of living is increasing at an alarming rate. People on supposedly decent incomes are struggling because of taxes for everything and have very little disposable income. I think the point of this post is that the rents are once again spiraling out of control, which for people with little financial room for manouevre makes things very hard to get by. No - i was saying assistance; ie state school; family to help out, child allowance, NHS etc... not necessarily to go back, live on the dole. Job seekers is peanuts i am not going back ever!

They're not permitted in the Gold/Platinum seats at Vox and Reel cinemas. Is this a seperate theater, or just a seperate seating section? I haven't been to the theater since I moved here two years ago just to avoid the undisciplined children. It's a separate theatre with lazy chairs and food and drinks served to your seat. Tickets are 100 aed though. And soooo worth it :-)

We haven't moved in to our apartment yet so I am not sure if we will have Du or Etislaat yet. But thanks for the information on Du. If we have to go with them then I know what to ask for:) You will only get the Premiership matches and the big teams dominate ( Chelsea, Man Ure, Man City etc) therefore some of the other premiership matches are not always shown. Abu Dhabi Sports has the rights to the Premier League over here, so they are the channels you need, regardless of whether you have Du or Etisalat. They simultaneously show every single Premier League game live with Arabic and English commentary across 7 or 8 different channels, so you shouldn't miss any games, no matter which team you support. They have missed a few out of the years i have heard the boys in the office complaining lol

I don't have kids and don't mind at all when they are around in "adult" areas, its not fair on the parents to be expected to be stuck at home or play areas only because they have children that they "cant" take out with them even if it is at night (I highly doubt those kids are out every single night and missing their bedtimes!) In fact I always find myself smiling and saying its alright to mummies who look worried or start apologizing when their kids start to act out.. its not their fault! I hate this whole kids must be seen but not heard business, even the most disciplined children will act out as do adults! I've seen as many adults making scenes and being loud and disturbing as kids are to be honest.. It's nice that you don't mind 2dogs although before I had children I was much more tolerant to misbehaving brats too. Probably because I didn't have them at home so didn't ever feel like I needed a break from it when I went out. If anything I thought it was funny - along with a smug MY children will never behave like that thought or two. Oh how wrong I was. I don' mind children as we were all small once. I dont like rudeness in any age however saying that i do not agree with kids running riot and their parents not doing anything about it There are 2 lovely kids in my building however they run up and down outside our doors screaming late on in the evening. I have been polite and told them to shush but to no avail. Someone even complained to the Mother however they received a mouthful. I do not believe that children should be seen and not heard although that comment should apply to some adults!

Yep greed, our wages aren't going up however. There well maybe a few more cars left at the airport soon. Supply and demand also. If people avoid areas which have ridiculous rent increases then they will have no choice to reduce them

I bought this spa voucher from #groupon promising a very high discount. I could only get an appointment after 2 weeks and of course not during the weekend, not even a week day after 6pm. I went to the location and found that it was a new small spa. I had waxing then massage. The waxing session was a disaster, I felt **** of pain and got burn in my under arm. The massage wasn’t as terrible but it wasn’t great. Since then, I am not using the services of any deal website. How were your experiences? Where do you go normally and how do you find the right spas, beauty salons in the price range you want? Usually word of mouth I won't use a voucher until i know someone that has already used it and given positive feedback We hear of so many horror stories on here about salons

If everyone was all roses and compliments on this forum, it would not survive. The debates, controversy, and banter are what keeps it going. And let's be honest, it makes it for a very interesting and entertaining read. If ladies can't handle that and are too sensitive, then it's not the right forum for them. Yep. Agree Me too! Me three I don't think the OP was talking about banter or debates, some people are downright rude and not everyone has a thick skin. I dont believe in tiptoeing around people but some posters are massively inconsiderate and most of us have come up against them on here at some time

Hey Ladies, I have been landed with a sudden visit from a male friend and his mate. They are only here for 4 nights and i will be working during the days that they are here. They have never been here before so they are not familiar with Dubai. Obviously, i'm not going to be about during the day to show them around. What sort of things could i suggest to them for during the day? Has anyone had the same scenario. They will be staying at a hotel so getting taxis etc is not a problem. I am not sure which hotel as yet? I like doing the usual Dubai sights but i'm not sure if it will up their street. Im thinking maybe go karting as 1 thing (just so i don't have to do it in the evening!) Any good mid week evening brunches at a reasonable cost you would recommend, it will be a school night for me! All suggestions welcome?! TIA ladies Flavour on 2 at the Rotana on SZR is cheap and they can go to Longs afterwards They can get on the Metro and go to MOE even if they are shoppers perhaps they can try the ski slope out

then dont say anything at all... come on ladies whats got into everyone, botox, dog water, elderly FIL's in the cinema. Lets all take a deep breath and remember we come here for advice not to be told we're stupid for asking a question (the answer of which may be entirely logical to most but clearly not to the OP) or to be judged. Come on its wednesday - the weekend is in sight :) Have a nice day everyone Unfortunately we can never change the soap boxers. They obviously have no friends ( or none that listen to them) and nothing better to do than stir the pot. I highly doubt people would behave the way they do on here face to face with someone. Safer to mock or judge behind a computer screen Unless it affects us or our loved ones directly who cares? and i agree people should think before they type. Who are any of us to judge . The vast majority of us are in the UAE for one reason and we should make the most of it and play nice. Have a good day all :-)

Yep... Colours/bleach and developer are not too expensive even the good ones..... It is mainly the time that it takes to do (if done well) which is what you are paying for.... and of course salons have rent/water/elec/licences/wages etc to pay for.... Yes but over here they "up" the prices massively. I would love to see their turnover they must be raking it in lol

I am a hairdresser, and I find that a lot of the salons out here are very over priced... It does all depend on the length of the hair.... For short hair half head highlights cut and blow dry, I would say a fair salon price would be: 550aed Medium Length: 600 Long: 650 Hope this helps :-) Agree considering i buy my colour and peroxide from the wholesalers and it costs around 120AED lol

What I have noticed is that those huge bags don't say whether they are for front-loading or top-loading use. Does anyone know if those huge bags would work in my washing machine? Thanks HereComesTheSun - so actually our contract should just be the same as everybody else's as it doesn't specifically say non renewable? So for everyone now the landlords can increase the price at the first renewal? Thanks - didn't know things had changed. They cannot increase unless the rental calculator says so The rent calculator is now law If your rent has increase on the calculator by 25% then can increase by 5% only Always refer to the rent committee or rent calculator as that is the new law not the old we can increase after a year. That is now moot. Two of my friends manage the buildings their companies built and they deal with the rent committee daily so i always refer to them as they know the law

dr ahmed at crescent medical next to mercato. 1000 for eyes and forehead. very happy with him (been going for 5 years) all my friends too. have tried much more expensive people, never noticed that it looked better, or lasted longer. Hi Kelly, I just called and booked an appointment here but they've quoted me 1500, are you sure you only pay 1000? I would pay an extra 300AED and go to Imran Tahir i have been using him for years and he is a well known and recommended surgeon here. The cheaper they are the cheaper product they use.

I would definitely research a few public forums before settling on a doctor though. Good luck OP!! JBR is a nightmare at the moment because of the construction. But the marina is fabulous. You never have to leave, it has a great crowd, a place to exercise, hundreds of restaurants, lovely bars and clubs. It is my favourite place to live. I have friends who live in Tecom and JLT and while these areas are not as social as the marina they are still good for traffic, transport and have shops close by. I would recommend opening two bank accounts when you arrive, a savings one and a current one. Lose the card of your savings account and put 10-20% of your salary or whatever you can budget into that account. This is the best way to save, because Dubai is a city for spending. Everyone has some kind of problem with the banks here, so I cannot recommend one :( Good luck and welcome to Dubai (soon) Dont forget the Greens, full of young people, low rise buildings, close to shops, metro station, ice cream parlour, KFC, Wagamama, Nandos, Caribou Coffee, green trees, lakes and they put Xmas trees up on all the fountain rounabouts last Xmas Each to their own however i lived at the Marina and hated it as it was too high rise and noisy for me. I am now in the Greens and happy haha :-)

Thanks You can walk across the bridge to the Metro, however during the Summer months you will not be able to do that without being drenched in sweat and it will be a 15 minute walk minimum The construction outside of JBR is the new tram thingy which is only under construction and i do not know if it will link to the closest metro stop which is on the other side of the marina Traffic in JBR can be bad in the mornings and at night due to the construction

Obviously she's legal to buy it at Heathrow, but what happens once she gets to Dubai airport? Where obviously you are supposed to be 21? Any advice greatly appreciated many thanks! I wrapped mine in a towel and put it in the case TBH Champagne and most other drinks are cheaper at Dubai airport and i doubt they will card her unless she looks really young. I think she will be fine :-)

We have a tenancy contract which says on it 'the contract validity is only for one year'. Is this the same as saying the contract is non renewable? i.e. the landlord can charge us market rate from next year even though it would only be the first time we would have renewed? It is written in the landlord's additional clauses on the back of the contract. I thought the contract had to say non renewable and so of course checked our contract for those specific words which were not there - however a friend has said to me that 'the contract validity is only for one year' means the same thing and if we want to renew (which we will do) then our landlord can put up the price. This worries me as the same apartments now seem to be renting for at least 20k more than we are paying and we have only been in for 6 months. I will obviously wait and see what the landlord says when we have 3 months left on the agreement but to stop me worrying about the possibility of having to move this year does anyone know for sure whether it is OK or not? Thanks It has to say non renewable otherwise carries on They cannot kick you out without 12 months notice in writing Check the rental calculator to see if the rents in the area have gone up A friend of mine had huge problems with the LL who wanted him out, she wouldn't agree to the rent even though the area he lived in had not increased. He went to the municipality with his tenancy agreement and they agreed a new one and he paid them directly and they paid the LL I have never heard of this before and was disinclined to believe it until i heard it straight from the horses mouth

Thanks Laura that msg was very helpful! May I ask what sort of area u are in? Apparently they already have a couple of furnished places available.. I'm assuming that's in Ajman though and from the previous posts I think I'd rather be in Dubai. [b'>It seems that most employers pay for accommodation/schooling and insurance so my DH is going to try and negotiate some of that.[/b'>What do u think of the schools there? Are they good? Do u feel like the kids are safe and happy when they are there? I haven't lived overseas before so I'm not sure how different it's going to be compared to the laid back lifestyle here That is a myth, employers in general, especially in private sector, are not offering such glamorous packages the way they use to. Too many people willing to accept less. Keep in mind that there are so many people in UAE that survive on 25k and much less, even with children - it's all about expectations. Are you really just coming here for an international work and living experience? Or are wanting to make some money? I would think it doesn't make much sense to pick up and start over in a new country if you're not going to be better off both professionally and financially. If you're having to negotiate such basics as family health insurance housing and education allowances with your DH's employer, then it really sounds like they are trying to get away with offering as little as possible. They know what your standards are at home, and they will know how much it costs to maintain that in UAE. edited by Sakhifa on 11/02/2013 Agree i see less and less packages with schooling now

Come on ladies whose business is it if we do it? How is it hurting anyone but the user and so what if we are insecure, isn't everyone in some way? I use it every 9 months l and it takes all the hideous redness out of my face which has blighted me for years and yes i can still raise my eyebrows, smile and laugh at some of the posts on EW. We do not all resemble Kylie or Nicole Kidman :-)
