I have heard lots of good things about Oman and Jordan, as well as turkey. All were recommended to me as holidays if living in Qatar (we're not there yet). I would just stay apprised of the political climate in Egypt if you plan the trip. I don't think I'd go there with my kids, but if it were just hubby and I, and we could move quickly I would consider it. I have always wanted to go! :)

I'm no help yet, but I did some prenatal pilates videos from youtube if you have access to that when I was last expecting. But, I'm also interested in the answer to this -- so bump!

Blood on a swab is normal - I had one at the beginning of my pregnancy here in Canada and another 6 weeks PP - both times I saw blood on swab, only the first one was painful. Both were done by gentle, efficient midwives. Sorry you had an unusually rough experience though -- it's bad enough as it is under normal circumstances.

Good to know! What about things like self-healing boards for rotary cutters, etc. I'm thinking about all the awkward devices. :)

They were illegal where DH and I grew up (another Canadian province) too, and those accidental home births happen there too - funny, sometimes they even have their attendants visiting! ;) They are legal and midwives paid for here. Scary that c-section rates are higher there - aren't they 30% in the states? Thanks for the info! :)

What is the hospital atmosphere in Qatar with regards to medication? Is it possible to have a non-medicated birth in a hospital there (ideally a hospital where my DH could be?)? We just had a home birth (after having a hospital birth for our first) and I can see that this would be a problem if I were to become pregnant while we live there (haven't moved yet). But, what about natural delivery in a hospital? Are they quick to stick you with Demerol and epidurals? Thanks!!

Hi folks -- new here. And sorry to hijack a little bit: We're contemplating a move to Qatar and I find myself wondering as I drift off at night about all sorts of silly things. For instance... (and related to this post)... did you BRING your sewing machines with you? I JUST bought a new Janome machine and I have only done one project on it. Now, we're applying for some work in the Middle East, and I think it might come in handy or at least come in.. oh.. fun, for something to do on those long Arabian nights. haha. Could a person buy one? Maybe I should sell it -- it would break my heart a bit I think to sell. But it seems like such a heavy thing to bring overseas. I suppose I need to discuss the move with DH a bit more. Would we just leave our things in storage... move only essentials or a partial move? etc.
