Did you try Newton British in Al Waab ? HI BEDH, thanks for your reply, I haven`t tried NBS because i saw in a recent post that they are relocating to Barwa, do you know anything about that?, if they are not moving then it will be ideal since it is the closest to my house.

I go to La Form in ALSadd off Alnasr st. i find them excellent for hair and nails and eybrows threading and waxing, they are a bit expensive though but good service. for a slightly cheaper option there is Barbi salon which is one of the oldest in Doha, there is a lebanses girl there called Samar, she is very good. American Glow is also popular among expats .

Hi Dubai expat women, my friend just moved to Dubai from UK, she is looking for accommodation options for a short term of 4-6 months and possibly extend it if everything goes alright, she wroks for the government but they are not providing her with housing, so she will be renting out a place on her own, do you have shared accommodation in Dubai, where she can rent an in suite room with other professionals in a villa or an apartment, where to find ads for that? or how people advertise for wanted or offered? and how much approximately will it cost? , also is shared accommodation better or a studio flat ?

It took me about a year to settle down here and to start loving it, we moved here from london also for job purpose, so life here was big change for me, I loved my life there I still do miss it , I didnt know anyone here but my husband,( I found out that i have an uncle who has been living here for the past 20 years) but other than that i left all my family and friends and life there , so I have been feeling terribly lonely despite of my husband amazing effort to comfort me, then shortly I had a knee accident and i couldnt do any sports ( I am a very active person) so it was nearly depression time, to say but few , it has not been the best year of my life, but then I pushed myself to go out, and do new activities and meet new people, and make good friends, and this made a big difference( FRIENDS is the magic word in Doha) I learnt not to wait for someone to etertain me or cheer me up, so decided to do swiming ( it is the only sport i can do but i had sea phopia before so i never tried it) and now i am in love with doha, and my daily escapes to the sea, it also made a big difference that i started working in my field , if I didnt leave the house to look for jobs, i wouldn't probably get it.so staying at home and resenting my life wasnt a good option for me. now when i think about my life here i feel blessed, also when i was back at home I was happy , so no need to compare. it is much easier to have someone to tell you that Doha will not offer you things even if it has it , it is just you need to grab them yoursef even if it means to make that little extra step, for example one of my best friends here i met her while shopping, i asked her if this dress looks good on me and that all what it took.

Hi Mother of five , it depends on your husband job and position , most probably you will get a villa ( it is worth contacting the houing department to check wether you will get a villa or a flat , and how much is the housing allowance in cash) , go for the villa by all means, location may vary, HMC dont have its own compound but they have villas in various compaounds in doha, they will give you 2-3 options and you will chose depending on your prefrence, if your husband has night shift like mine i would go for the less commute option, also because they start they day quite early. regarding furniture: they all come unfurnished except of AC ( sometimes) but no furniture no curtains no electricals, Where will you be coming from? coz it might be worth it to bring your furniture with you ( if you get shipping allowance or calculate how much the shiping will cost you?? are you going to ship in a container or by cargo?? also do you have a place to store them back at home?).. finidng good affordable new furniture here is difficult but there are some furniture shops here, Homecenter will do for your basic purchases , second hand furniture is also available at cheaper prices, ( i personally dont like Home center , there ID design which is like an upgraded IKEA but more expensive,No IKEA here at the moment. look for post about furniture for more info) you can buy all your electrical appliances from here. what i meant by checking with housing, is we have been on the waiting list for our(provided accommodation ) for more than 6 months now, we live in a rented 2bedroom flat ( no kids) off the housign allowance which is not much compared to other places and also depends on your position ( my husband is a resident doctor R4) , so we have been in contact with them all this persiod and they keep telling us we will inform you as soon as we get new villas becuase they dont have any currently alocated for residents yet.

My husband is, and we live in Alsadd off the housing allowance, depending on your position and contract they can offer you an accomodation in a villa or at their housing development., checking withthe housing department ( check constantly as they seem to forget about you very quickly)

I actually had an accident last week inside a round about, having said that, it was indeed my fault, because i predicted worngly that the adjecent car will try to cross me over, i ended up crossing it. but a general good tip some one gave me and YES it is working, , Always keep black headscarf and husge sunglesses in the car, and just wear them when i am driving, no one dare to push me over, except ofcourse men in big cars... if anyone tries it, let me know if it also works for you :-) my husband find it funny though

Hi Amy77, spending the whole summer with your parents is less expensive but can be a awfuly boring vacation, especially if you dont have friends there, Having said that, it is nice to pay them a visit for a week or so, ( I often run out of words after a week) , but for a nice summer holiday I would plan ahead, save money and go on one of those exclusive detox and yoga retreats in south east Asia, for a month or so, and then I will go visit family and friends, attend a festival or celebration and perhaps visit a friend in another country for a week. if you are working here, then i would return a week ealier, just to settle back. I am also married without kids, I find solo travelling not that bad, especially that my husband cant days off his work yet. and summer is too hot and boring here.

Thanks ladies for your reply, so i guess Doha kinda suck you into its easy life and temptations, but what about missing on life itself?? How old were you when you came to Doha??, I often feel i am missing out alot living in this part of the world, and I miss the LIFE you will have back in London, arts, events, stories, adventures, people and FUN ( I am only 23 and i am living my optimum career goals) but i already feel like i am living the life of a 40 years old person in Doha ( not that 40 is too old, just that i feel the my youthful and restless years are wasted here, perhaps with children it is different) , so beside employment and easy living does quality of life, age, and living excpectation matter?? how long should one stays in Doha before they forget what they are missing out on?

Hi Amy, no need to panic , they wil not deport you or anything, just relax , and sort things out when you r back, whatever it is, it can be solved, either you pay your fine or clear things up.. :-) if you want to leave it behind your back then just call the police station and ask them what is itall about.. Mutrash is only an sms service not a police patrol, i know how it feel to receive a message from them. it is laways annoying even those EID greetings always terrify me at glance. but i came to know that things in doha are simpler and easier than what we imagin. and what if you have been naughty?? so what u had a trafic speed ticket? not the end of the world :-) ( my nightmare is to closs the red traffic light) 6000QR fine enjoy your holiday and stock up loads of movies for your husband rehabitation after surgeries , hope he get well soon after it

Hi Sam, hope you will enjoy your stay in Doha, just to mention that it is getting hot here so dont forget your sunblock, glasses, hat. you can have a dinner at Souq wagif, there are plenty of cusines to choose from and also Shisha lounges , there is a beach party on the 5th evenig atthe main Intercon hotel beach if you like dancing. for art, there is a fantastic Japanese artist exhbition called Murakami Ego at the museum of Islamic art, which also has a nice permenant collection. it is located near Corniche and Souq Waqif. for Dinner i can also suggest to look at some Restaurants in the Pearl area, but i wouldnt imagine that is very different from Dubai didning theme. welcome to Doha HTH

I'd second the Big Bus Tour for sheer convenience in covering the 'main points' on one route and if your DH is free of an evening, you can go on the lights and sights non stop tour to see Dubai by night... You could meet DH for dinner at Ripe at the Desert Palm Polo Club having been there early enough yourself for a stable tour and watch a match (can't remember what days they play, or even if the season's still on for that matter...:-) Thanks Perces, i will definlty look into that :-)

Thanks Biscuit Maker for your reply, the Abra sunset trip sounds fantastic, will definelty try it, what about the Burj Khalif tour? is it worth it? do i need to book in advance or i can just walk in?? the 'At the Top' of Burj Khalifa is really good - much much cheaper if you book ahead on line. Best time to go imo is just before sunset so you are there for the end of the days sun and see the sun set from there. If you really want to see the city I'd take myself off on the Big Bus Tour you can do this while your DH is at his conference - you'll see all the interesting bits of Dubai in one hit. It also includes the Dubai Museum and a creek cruise - definitely worth it and I think you can run it over 2 days. Why not go skiing at Ski Dubai!!! All sunset time are already booked, do you suggest to visit other times?? day or night? I like the big bus tour, i used to take the london one all the time although i wasnt a tourist but loved the open upper deck, do i need an all day ticket or only specific hours, can i hop in and out form the bueses?? sking would have been a wonderful experience unfortunately i have torn a legement recently and kinda taking it easy on sport, what about the chill out cafe, the ice themed place , have you been there? do you recommend me to go there? edited by malaz on 02/04/2012
