MrsDB, I am so sorry you are feeling this way. I feel bad as a friend of mine was in the same position here, such a lovely girl and I really wanted to see her more but because i worked we weren't free at the same time, she wanted to keep her evenings and wkends for hubby & family time which is 100% understandable. Unfortunately when her hubby's job finished and they went back home because she felt like she hadn't made any close friends , I felt awful that i hadn't done more for her. The sad thing was the few weeks before she left she realized she really had some great friends in the mums groups she just hadn't realized. She was so busy meething them she literally had no time to pack, she said if she'd only told them sooner how she felt it would have been so different as she came across as so confident and bubbly they had no idea she felt so lonely. I know Dubai can feel really click-y, but generally they are lovely you just have to put yourself in there. Like a few others have mentioned sit and talk with your hubby and hopefully you can find a happy medium i am demon when i get in from work I just need some me time for a bit (I know god help me when i have kids) but once i have this time i generally get chattering no prob. I know its easier said than done but try and do something for yourself maybe once a week. Best of luck xx

Depends on if you're smelly sweaty or drippy sweaty... or both! Wouldn't like to be beside you if you're smelly and I wouldn't like to be in your seat after you leave if you're drippy! :) Can't you just run earlier so you have time for a shower? edited by mannikat on 17/09/2013

It might be tight but i think if it the parts you are taking off are dead or un-usable then its completely reasonable. In my opinion a decent shop would do this already so you don't have to. As for chain supermarkets being portrayed as victims its almost laughable...making margins of anything from 40-80% of the goods they stock and treating suppliers like dirt..... taking a few dead bits off veg has nothing to do with them increasing their prices.

Congrats on the interview! I'm sure your dress is lovely and probably appropriate, but for an interview here I would go with a pants suit, until you have a better idea of the office culture there. I don't work in the same industry but when i interviewed for my first job here they were really concerned that i had experience working with other nationalities, this may or may not be an issue just something to bare in mind. Most companies expect you to be flexible with your working hours. Companies here can and sometimes do ask personal questions; are you single? when do you plan to have kids? etc... just be prepared! Hope it goes well for you. edited by mannikat on 16/09/2013

Thank you both! Just found the perfect thing on etsy. A leather satchel, she stills uses her old backpack from our BA days so think she will love an update! Will do a spa day next time i'm home, she's a bit like me wouldn't really fancy it on her own.

Hi Ladies, looking for some inspiration for my best friends birthday. She has recently gone back to uni and i don't know whether to get her something useful or something pretty. I've done both in the last year. She has a laptop and kindle so doesn't need any gizmo's. Just wondering if there is any one in same boat that has any suggestions? I bought her a lovely necklace the last time i was home, she had been through a really rough patch and just wanted to treat her, I saw it in the airport and just picked it up. She's like a sister to me and has always been amazing during my dark days. I ended up feeling a bit like a Dubai tw*t tho as her BF is on limited budget working and studying, could see he felt a bit like how am i supposed to deal with this person showing up with random expensive gifts. Not my intention at all. Any suggestions? edited by mannikat on 15/09/2013

Hi, sorry to hijack can i ask if your finger tips have become extremely sensitive to heat through your nails? I know its sounds really weird, I was cooking last night, a few lasangas for the freezer and some bread so i was working over heat for a few hours and my nails and finger tips were so sore like i had been handling hot pots directly. I've never had this before, the reason I ask is that I've just been diagnosed with psoriasis (neck&shins) and reading your thread wondering if its on my nails as well? edited by mannikat on 10/09/2013

Its unlikely to be lifestyle related his age, unless his lifestyle is more than smoking and drinking.... Also presuming as you haven't said that he isn't working anywhere with chemicals etc... More likely an underlying condition in which case he is very lucky to have survived, SADS has a 95% fatality rate. The only way you could blame the employer(which i don't agree with it) is if there were no qualified first aider on site, they don't actually have to provide first aid as per the labour but they are required to provide items from the first aid box which must be in place and advise on treatment etc... More presumptions but surely someone must have given him CPR or used a AED? I hope he recovers and your friend gets over the need to blame, she'll need her energy focused to help him get through this. edited by mannikat on 08/09/2013

Like Cherry said it really depends on your budget. We started off with dubizzle really cheap stuff and ikea and have gradually upgraded bits and pieces. Even when we changed things we still got some from dubizzle; sofa from the one, bed from Marina exotic. If your not in a rush there are great deals to be had. Also for second stuff there is a cash converters on SZR which has pretty good stuff. For new stuff I love Pinkys and La Maison Chic.

I don't know how you could do a Masters in Psychology without a BA? A friend from back home, had a BA in History & English and went back for a BA in Psychology before doing a Masters. I would be wary of a university that would let anyone go straight into a Masters. No offence but you don't have the basic's (at least formally) I'm sure you've read loads and have life experience... Good luck going back, my friend loves it and is glad she is a bit older doing it.

I've used it here and at home, didn't really notice much of a difference on the inches although i did get measured, the main difference was on my thighs and my skin looked so much better and felt lovely afterwards. l left the mud on until the next day, there isn't much. results lasted a few weeks. Fell asleep while I was wrapped up both times.

I wouldn't risk bringing codeine to Dubai you need a police clearance letter...a friend of mine cant have aspirin so has to take it sometimes and each time she needs the letter, a prescription wont be enough. Until this i didn't even know you could get it as I assumed when it was illegal it wouldn't be available. When my brother gets a bad cough he always ends up coughing up some blood, his blood vessels pop easily so its not a symptom just a side effect. Does your doctor know your flying? Even if you can't get a doctor a decent chemist can tell you what you need and can give prescription meds if required, they can also let you know if you should be flying. Hope you feel better soon! you dont need a police clearance letter in dubai thats rubbish, all you need is a letter from your doctor and they must be in original containers etc. all medicines that are controlled are allowable here but with evidence of need etc. Not sure why you think it's rubbish, this is what my friend told me when she was prescribed codeine by her Dr in the UAE. We were discussing how you cannot get nurofen plus here when she told me. Have you been prescribed codeine here? Genuinely wondering? Ruth M, once you ditch it safely on arrival I'm sure you'll be fine. Safe travels rubbish in that the fact you dont need police clearance letter to bring in such things. codeine is a controlled substance here not elsewhere in the world, other such medications such as sleeping pills are on controlled list easy to get with the right doctor writing the prescriptions, such as pyschiatric medications giving out by the pyschiatrist etc, i have known people bring in coeidne in medicine and been fine with doc letter plus original containers. and all cases medications given out by hospital all require copy of id etc. I'm not trying to give anyone misinformation I was sharing info i received from a friend, clearly you disagree. Apologies....

A lot of people here are working to pay off mortgages back home. If Dubai took the same view they might get some of their money back rather than wasting it putting people in jail. The majority of people working here are not crooks and given the freedom to work and pay off their debts the would. Having the breadwinner of the family thrown in jail is not going to solve anything. Again we are not talking about some punk in flash cars running up credit card bills they are a family and by all accounts from the OP an honest one caught in a bad situation. Its not like they have sold the cars or property and run off with the cash, that would be stealing, as it is they have left the assets.

The way all banks weight their repayments to repay the interest first means these people have little or not additional equity even if they have been paying a mortgage for 5 years. I have so much respect for how local people and culture are protected from greedy expats but at the same time there are many 'lifers' contributing to the growth and development of the region. edited by mannikat on 01/09/2013 Greed knows no boundaries so lets not generalize, most expats are not greedy, just normal people trying to work hard for them and their families and are not getting anything for free I have also read that in case someone loses a job, banks sometimes freeze their entire account, and want them to pay off their loan without resorting to funds they already have, which seems to be tailored edited by Arch on 01/09/2013 Sorry Arch, I meant some greedy expats, I suppose I'm thinking of home where people can rock up from all over Europe and claim benefits etc... having contributed nothing. I completely support that, that doesn't happen here. I only moved here after the boom and I don't really know anyone on the big old packages or driving flash cars.

It will depend on which bank you go with really and what type of mortgage (fixed or variable) and over how many years. As Izzy said they will be on most bank websites, but i wouldn't trust them as they will give payments based on the lowest rates which may not be applicable to you.

From what I know that is now how it works. If a person cannot make the monthly payments, it can become a criminal offence depending on how the ban treats it. Repossesing is something that can be done in parallel with a criminal case Its frightening to think that as well as having to deal with losing your job and your home you cant be treated like a criminal as well. The issue is here, when you fail to make payments, they try to recall the entire loan which makes no sense, if cant make the payment how can you pay the whole thing and if you could pay it all, why would you have a mortgage in the first place? The way all banks weight their repayments to repay the interest first means these people have little or not additional equity even if they have been paying a mortgage for 5 years. I have so much respect for how local people and culture are protected from greedy expats but at the same time there are many 'lifers' contributing to the growth and development of the region. edited by mannikat on 01/09/2013

Maybe I am missing the point but the OP is talking about someone who has left property debt? In this case the bank can re possess the property.... they valued it to hand out the mortgage so if it doesn't cover what the lent.... that their loss or at least it should be. Who takes out a mortgage and plans to default on it? What would be the point? In any country? Who plans to buy a house thinking 'Oh I'll lose my job in five years....' If they bought a property they were living in they probably planned to be here for a long time. It sounds like they were in an unfortunate position in a country where they hand out credit cards like sweets and give credit/loans without any proper credit checks.... Its not just a problem here but the lack of empathy or willingness to work out payment plans, give a few months mortgage relief to let someone find another job makes good people think they have no choice.

Re the laser eye clinic in Mazaya centre. These guys almost performed laser eye surgery when my eyes weren't suitable and incorrectly told me I was going blind in my right eye. It was upsetting and traumatic to say the very very least. Their reception staff were very rude when i was trying to getting my money back actually trying to make me feel bad when they had been 15 mins away from causing irreparable damage.

I would get to the doctor when you get a chance. I slipped on steps last year and hit my leg just above my ankle. To make a really really long story short i still have a bruise and occasional swelling (the swelling has improved but it comes back and there never seems to be a reason, its not worse when i run or when i fly its just random). It healed badly (lots of scar tissue) for whatever reason and the lymph cannot drain properly. Your symptoms sound similar so it might be the same issue but better to check it out. i need surgery to create additional drainage around the scar tissue (cant explain it better than that sorry) and if i want rid of the bruise i need laser. This is because i waited too long and took the advice of bad doctor. edited by mannikat on 29/08/2013

This might not help but as an adult with wide (and large for a lady feet) the only place i can get shoes in Dubai is the outlet mall. There is a shop with Aldo and Spring, its odd as they never have my size in Dubai Mall but always out there. Their lovely shop assistant in Dubai Mall was kind enough to tell me 'You have big man feet Mam/Sir' ugh! It might be the same for kids...I know there is a sketchers shop and I'm sure I have seen geox out there. edited by mannikat on 29/08/2013

We fly KLM all the time, they are usually the best value. I've only been delayed once and that was due to weather, my DH had a flight cancelled a few wks ago (bit of stress as it was for a 2day trip for a wedding) but they put him on an etihad direct flight so no issues. The flights are always busy...I would recommend them over Turkish.

Do you have HR experience in the UAE? Unless you have they probably wouldn't expect you to have an in depth knowledge of it. http://www.gulftalent.com/home/UAE-Labour-Law-Report-14.html I downloaded a copy from here, and i keep it in my desk as a reference. not sure if there is a more up to date version. A friend of mine was recently asked in an interview for a HR position in Dubai if he were a circus animal what would he be?.... bizarre. I do some HR in my job, even though I am not trained for it, their main concern was that i had experience in working with and dealing with other nationalities. Good luck with the interview!

We pay lots on a tv package that we rarely use, the only reason we picked the more expensive one is because there are only a few English channels on the basic package. I'm not sure if you can 'cash in' if you are non resident, you might be liable for tax. Generally back home pension payments are tax effective in that if you pay tax of 20% on your salary and you are paying into your pension for every 100 you pay in you're actually only paying 80, this is a really basic example. (Amounts are limited etc...lots of other clauses) So if you do/can cash in it may be less the tax incentive, so it would be worth less than you think it is. You're unlikely to be penalised if you transfer it to another pension, probably just some admin fees. If you are far off retirement its likely to have been invested in higher risk funds so may not be a good time to move. Generally to begin with pensions/long term investments go into higher risk but higher return(this is the idea, not that it always works) funds and as you near retirement they gradually transfer it to lower risk less profit and then to all cash. I don't meant to suggest your pension is at risk in anyway but markets go up and down. Very few people seem to have had it explained to them. In order for there to be 'enough' when you retire it cant just be left on deposit or it will be worth nothing with inflation. Have you spoken the company currently hold your pension? edited by mannikat on 27/08/2013

TBH its your facebook so you can do what you like with it. I'm not saying that in a childish way, I'm just saying you should be able to post without judgement...to me its for people I would go for coffee or drinks with, my social circle not people i need to be guarded with. Having different groups sounds like a good plan but these back fire a lot and things get posted to the wrong groups....how many stories of people getting fired for stupid remarks? or that Irish girl having a private convo published about her escapades with some rugby players?? FB is not worth a fight with your hubby, if he has his own page and his dad is on his that is enough... does he have all your family on his? Do you worry that he will say something to upset them?

This is standard with home insurance(in Europe anyway) unfortunately, in order to be insured you have to inform the insurer of items of value over a certain amount, this can vary at their discretion. The bank i worked for everything over 2,000euro had be noted on the policy, so engagement rings, tv's, laptops, the works.... Basically they were getting ripped off by people claiming they had high end stuff they didn't actually have. If its jewelry they will mostly like accept a valuation certificate from a reputable jeweler, they might even have a list and you have to use theirs. I know its annoying but if you are going to pay for insurance you want to make sure you are properly covered. Probably best to shop around, insurance is one of the least regulated areas of banking even back home, in terms of the fact they can ask for anything before they provide cover and can refuse cover on the most ridiculous grounds.

Hi Nadiya, Good luck with the purchase, I hope it goes well. I can't really give advice on mortgages here but i would advise to really look around. My boss is looking to buy a villa the moment and has come to me re some of his options (I used to work in a bank back home) the only bank that seemed to be offering an overall long term good option is Emirates Islamic Bank, he has only looked at a few. Some banks here seem to charge a 1% fee for the mortgage he is buying a villa so 1% would be an insane amount for an admin fee. Others are offering very attractive rates for the 1st 5 years then it goes up drastically and considering mortgages are usually 20yrs plus you want a good long term deal. If you are hoping to pay it off early or take the odd chunk off after a few years. You need to make sure you wont be penalised or even that you are allowed to make lump sum capital pay offs. Fixed mortgages do not have this option (it would effect the interest on the loan and therefore bank profits) Changing banks with your mortgage also incurs a large up to 3% fee, so you need to think if they can offer you everything you need not just the mortgage. Not being negative just trying to give you the picture i'm seeing so far.Do shop around and really look at the rates they are offering long term.

Some of the thread seems to be missing but from what i can gather you only seem to have had an issue once you lodged a cash lump sum. If this is the case they are more concerned about money laundering than your nationality. I worked in a bank back home and this is one of the things we are told to watch out for all cash transactions over a certain amount require tellers to ask where the money came from. I always found this stupid and on many occasions was told 'its not like i would tell you if I had robbed it!' Transactions of higher amounts are automatically reported to the fraud department and investigated from there. In Ireland lodging 500euro notes will get you added to a fraud investigation as nothing over a 100euro note gets printed there and 500's are associated with drug dealing.

Congrats Bella! Hope all the plans are going well! Quick question are you actually getting married in Dubai? I got married last year but I was getting married at home in Ireland i only had one trip home between getting engaged and getting married so i had to find my dress here. I tried a few places, frost, pronovias and one or two others but to be honest the staff were mostly rude and the selection was poor. The wedding shop mentioned below were amazing, they have tons of dresses and will do anything to get you into them/tighten them up(sizes are a bit random)so really see what they are like. The reason i ask if you are getting married here is because even though i found my dress there it was very expensive, however when i checked my local bridal shop at home which stocks the same brand it was literally half the price.... so i ordered it at home. I know this is cheeky but it was half the price and it was so much handier have the dress at home. Good luck!

The Astronomy Club are suggesting somewhere out in Ajman! Thanks, I had seen this but it seems to close to the city? Might give it a go, guess if that's where the Astronomy club are going it must be good!
