Talk to the tenant, give them some time to sort the cheque(a few days), if they don't go to the police. As per the recent news announcements the police expect people to try and resolve this amongst themselves so unless you have tried this first you are wasting your time. Yes the tenant should have called you if they knew there was going to be an issue. Why did the last cheque bounce and how did you resolve it that time? Same issue? edited by mannikat on 06/10/2014

I'm sure she is well aware of the birds and the bees, however that doesn't make the 'first time' any less nerve wracking! I think we are all nervous our first time and with the added pressure of literally everything in your life changing, I'm sure its pretty scary even if she likes the guy. Maybe just try and tease it out of her by telling her about your own experience?

@wickedangel_78 yes they said they need my passport copy and salary certificate which I have, and it'll take some days to process. I'm on prepaid right now with them so need to transfer to postpaid, the guy said it's quite straightforward but sales people will make it sound like that to make a sale! Going there in a bit to check it out and hopefully start the process @mannikat du also has an offer and they have iPhone 6 in stock as well (at Gitex anyways) http://www.du.ae/mobile/specialoffers/iphone-6-offer if you mean you already have an iPhone then I'm not sure how it works, sorry! Thanks sourskittleashnut already have the phone as I wanted facetime, will try the du office today, the website looks like I can but when i call du they keep asking for my du number which I dont have after 20mins asking about a sim-only postpaid plan I gave up :)

I have the silver card, it used to be 20aed and came with 14aed credit which should be enough to get you around for the day, but the staff can give you more detailed info, they are very helpful. Just tell them where you intend to go and they will advise. The reason i suggest this one is that i can use it for parking as well if I don't have have change so its still useful when I'm back in the car. Enjoy

Similar to Ireland when the recession hit some of the worst performing loans belonged to expats that just stopped paying as they didn't live there,or their plans to rent or move changed as a result of the economy. While the banks have legal recourse its generally too costly for an individual mortgage. In Ireland these loans were approx only 1-2% of the over all lending book of the banks but they have since started practicing tighter controls therefore these mortgages are considered high risk. Technically there is no issue getting a mortgage as an expat, provided you meet the general criteria.

+1 for Arabian adventures and its in the entertainer! I have done it four times with visitors over the years, if you can get enough people to fill the car. We got stuck twice with people that didnt want to have a good bash, what annoyed me was the drivers tried to swap people around so people that wanted a good go could have it and that people that didn't could have a calmer drive. Also had two morons untie their seltbelts and bash their heads and cheekily tried to blame the driver!

No offence to anyone but seeing as you all feel so strongly about the issue how is it none of you have made provision to be there to vote? If it was the future of my home country you can be d*mn sure i'd have my say. People fought and died for my right to vote and I would be hard pressed to not exercise it. There are lots of reasons not to be there but as many of you have said this is a forever deal. You need to be a current resident with your permanent home address in Scotland to be eligible to vote. If it were your country facing this would you really move back to your home country in order to vote? I know I wouldn't. I intend to move home after my time in Dubai so yes I would actually go home, if there was something this big that would affect my future and that of my family.

Ireland considering the recent economic crisis is probably not the best example of independence from the UK. However regarding the passport issue something similar to the below may be put in place in Scotland as it was in Ireland. (Ireland became a free state in 1922 but was not a republic until 1949) Section 5 of the 1949 Act conferred Citizenship of the UK and Colonies (CUKC) on any Irish-born person meeting all the following criteria:[5'> was born before 6 December 1922 in what became the Republic of Ireland; was domiciled outside the Republic of Ireland on 6 December 1922; was ordinarily resident outside the Republic of Ireland from 1935 to 1948; and was not registered as an Irish citizen under Irish legislation. I do not envy the issues that lie ahead for you either way, but one thing I will say is that you are lucky it is all going about peacefully.

Yes, its truly awful. Unfortunately I didn't know it was hormonal/menopausal and thought it was a relapse into depression. Finally i went to see a counselor who send me to a GP who figured it out immediately. At this stage the worst was over but I continued with the counselling for a few months. I also learned to practice mindfulness and meditation which really helped. However I believe there are plenty of medical ways to assist. Mine was short term (an incompetent 'dr' stopped my periods for 6 months with no explanation of the consequences, i thought i was losing my mind it was one of the worst experiences of my life). I would advise going to a good GP to begin with i would recommend mine but she has left Dubai.

Have to agree with the others here, I would reduce spending on literally everything but a photographer for your wedding. Besides your DH, its one of the main things you can cherish after the day. We didn't go with an outrageously expensive photographer but she did an amazing job and I'm an honestly 100% happy that we choose to go the professional route. It's really not about the camera, photographers learn the skills and have the equipment but most importantly they have eye for a shot from experience and good ones blend in and can get good shots quickly and capture the moment. An amateur with a camera might get some nice pictures but a pro will capture your day. No matter how simple your wedding is, you honestly can't imagine how wonderful the day is and how much you will want to remember it. I hope you find someone suitable. Good luck.

Yep, no changes... Infact my brother is doing it right now! He said it's about AED50. And don't forget to add Oman car insurance if it's not already on the vehicle you're travelling in edited by coffee_mate on 03/09/2014 Unless this has changed recently or you want to spend some time in Oman you don't need insurance for a visa run, although companies are happy to sell it. Hubby was doing runs for a few months when we got here and did it the first time and the border guards(not sure what they are called) said it wasn't required for just a visa run.

People try this all the time in my local spinneys, I don't let it slide ever. I don't care if I seem like a maniac, what's worse is when people let/use their kids to jump a queue. Ignorance is not an excuse, thankfully the staff have become quiet good at telling people where the queue is and how to use it. I do hate the fact that some days it feels like even going to the shops is a battle!

Personally wouldn't recommend them, I've mentioned on a few other threads. Found the PT's to be rude and pushy, harassing you when you are doing your own thing trying to sell you sessions etc.... there is very little negotiating on the price but you may get some extra's thrown in.

Marroosh hopefully one day we'll have Primark and Superdrug! I love all the defense retailers get here, its bizzare! I won't go about how they operate but they are ripping off consumers and suppliers here and at home. My family are suppliers (farmers), my DH works in FMCG. I am well aware of how it all operates. Simple product breakdown, if a product costs 100aed how much do you think the retailer gets?

There is no VAT in Dubai, that should automatically make it cheaper here. Shop rents are higher but staff costs are lower, they charge more and people are willing to pay it. Importing it has nothing to do with it, most products have a far shorter journey coming to Dubai than to the UK. I'm not aware of superdrug but it would be great to have more choice. I live in hope to see the day Pennys/Primark arrives here! edited by mannikat on 26/08/2014

I understand but if you look western you will struggle to get prices comparable to what landscapers get. I'm not trying to put you off, just know from friends that went through it recently. Depends on the size of your garden too! They all live in JAV and have huge plots. Don't be surprised at random costs like tiles being delivered for a price then been asked to pay labor to unload them (they did themselves). They just said its a struggle dealing with all the suppliers.

Warsan - soil and plants Tiles/pavers & fake grass- dragon mart There is a gravel place in hatta, that is quiet cheap but you would need to be ordering a lot to even out the transport charges. I'll check the name and put it up later. Dubizzle is really handy also, but buying from a few places can really add a lot in transport. Do a budget and get quotes from a few landscapers you'd be surprised at how little you save doing it yourself. edited by mannikat on 26/08/2014

I buy mine on visiondirect.com and shop and ship them. Don't think the location of manufacture affects the cost, its expensive at home as they are prescribed so you can't just walk in and buy them captive market! Here you don't need a prescription but they are still expensive. I get my eyes tested every two years and I have had no issues (other than a failed attempt at laser eye surgery).

All fresh produce is bought with an expected wastage of up to 25% they do not expect to get 100% of the shelf value, shops do not pay for things the same way consumers do, its a vastly different set up. There are strict labeling laws in the EU which would not allow for many things that go on here, incorrect weight being one of many. Going to a butcher is probably your best bet to avoid this extra weight. edited by mannikat on 25/08/2014

DT, I have seen on my FB people posting their ice bucket challenge. I have not opened any links. But when I was watching the news in Holland and it actually discussed the disease, that is when I actually knew what ALS was. Not because of people throwing ice buckets, but because it was talked about. So for me personally, the campaign did absolutely nothing. so you have an opinion even though you haven't opened any links or bothered to find out WHY the campaign features iced water over the head...and now that you do know why, you still think it's waste... Yes I have an opinion because you don't HAVE to open a link to know what the campaign is about. And YES I still think it's wrong to waste water, something many people are without (And no, you can't compare it to drinking water or eating food, or not doing so because others don't have it), in order to get a message across. I am genuinely shocked at your attitude... I cannot understand people that begrudge this type of good will.... [u'>[b'>they use ice water specifically give people a few seconds of insight into a horrific illness[/b'>[/u'>, it snowballed beyond their wildest dreams and i for one think its amazing. This water isn't wasted, not one single video on my feed failed to show their donation text and they were very clear it was ice water and donation but you have to watch the videos to see this information. What attitude? That I don't think you need to waste water to get a message across? Why can't people just donate? That's not enough? I give up!!!!

You can show you care by just donating the money. You don't have to throw a bucket of ice over yourself to care. That s my opinion and I stand by it. No offence but did your private donation raise awareness however generous it may have been? A huge amount of money has been raised but also a huge amount of awareness, awareness is vital to combating any issue. ALS is flavour of the month, they made a campaign that has taken off and I wish them the best, other illnesses that are just as bad have darkened the door of my family and friends but that doesn't mean that i begrudge what the ALS association has done. In my opinion donating quietly to charity helps, but if you know the charity and what its about you are more likely to donate in the first place.

Basically you need a financial review. You need to look at what you are spending and how you are spending. When you have this info you can see what you could realistically save monthly. Then you plan what to do with it. First and foremost never ever put all your eggs in one basket!! All my savings go to a feeder account and from there it feeds other accounts roughly 50% low risk 50% medium to higher risk. One savings plan is guaranteed capital and interest and the other capital guaranteed with a possible higher interest return. When these complete and I have lump sums (not talk huge amounts) I will assess where i am and what's available and again divide my risk and reinvest. I worked in a bank back home. Always keep a small lump sum available for emergencies. Great longer term investments are of zero use if you need cash in the interim for whatever reason. edited by mannikat on 20/08/2014

No harm to check with the embassy but to my knowledge the reason they ask for ballpoint is so that its not smudgy when they scan it (this was the reason we used ballpoint in the bank) once its clear and dry you shouldn't have a problem.

All the shops are at it, even Spinney's. Bought fresh prawns fro there once and when I got home and opened the bag, they were totally off...... I check dates now. I bought prawns from Geant the other day within the date on the package and they were off. I cant believe stores would risk it with seafood! becareful I don't think they care to be honest. When I took my prawns back, they were like " what do you want us to do" lol. Why on earth would they care? They are low paid employees who get kicked out of the country if they cause a fuss - and the people who should care are too wealthy to be bothered with a few out of date prawns ... Surely its their job to care, its not like shop workers at home are paid footballers wages. They have procedures to deal with issues like this and the staff are trained to handle it or at least escalate it to someone that can/should do something about it. So many of these companies supposedly conform to ISO 9001 a key part of which is control on non conforming products.
