WOW - have you not asked for one? I have had two salary increases in 3 years and am kinda expecting another in April Do you work in the private sector? Have you ever had to ask for a pay rise? Yes and yes :) Thought you were in the public sector, my brain playing tricks on me! Good for you!

I have not asked either, but costs are going up and I am struggling so I am now considering asking. Go in strong and calm with a list of what you have achieved for the company and how having you is an asset to them, if you have a reasonable boss you should get something. Its not easy to ask or to be told no but sometimes you have to try. Just be careful as you don't want to earmark yourself for the wrong reason, good luck.

if i have the money (no more brunches & eating out with the entertainer only!) and I can plan my time off well enough: Jordan Berlin Goa China (would recommend Sri lanka & istanbul also as they are cheap to get to and shortish flights) Haven't been to Oman but I am sure someone will recommend it.

I hope they investigate and I hope lessons are learned, that is the best possible outcome. Peace ladies! Marroosh I still disagree with you but wish you well and I apologise your post is back up because of me. And pretty sure I am the one that mentioned the titanic. Happy new year all!

If you don't hear anything back from the company, I would contact Consumer Rights. Unless they make it very clear in their procedures that they charge xyz amount on certain days or timings, they can't just up their prices like that. You should be able to get your money back. They are a facilitator so apparently we are supposed to be aware of occasional price increases of the operators. They have responded with code for 20ds off another trip. Will be taking it further, thanks for the advise on consumer rights

The lack of organisation could have far more serious consequences than people missing parties. This chaos is downright dangerous, unfortunately things will not improve until there is a tragic accident.... I pity the people that will have to suffer before the authorities realise what needs to be done. I've been on here complaining about a crazy expensive cab ride but at least I got home safely!

Surprise at the end of the journey, really disappointed as we had used them quiet a bit lately and had recommended them. We expected to pay more but 6 times the going rate is ridiculous. complained on ride review and sent another complaint via the support site. No response yet.

Hope you're feeling better OP! I agree that manners seem to be dwindling these days. What happened to men holding the door open for you, giving up their seat for you and allowing you into the elevator first? These little, but very meaningful, acts of decency are disappearing and I don't like it. I was in the elevator the other day when the door opened and five men pushed in WHILE I was trying to get out in spite of my repeated "excuse me" which they ignored. Having been backed into a corner, I had to ask them firmly and loudly to let people get out before they got on.What really got me? they seemed surprised! Just one of many cases. A shame really. What happened to men holding doors open etc? I very much suspect we women did the day men decided they'd rather keep their testicles than suffer the wrath of one of our militant 'sisters' who saw any kind of chivalry or good manners as an insult. We wanted equality. We got it. Plus a whole lot more besides. Equality doesn't mean that courtesy should be lost, i would expect a women to hold a door for me as much as man and to be polite. I don't let doors swing closed behind me in someones face just because I am woman, nor would i only expect a man to give up his seat for someone more in need. All those able should do such things. We do what we see, i try to be polite here and i know generally i am politer than a lot of people here (going on how i see others behave in public), however after going home at Christmas i can see how much politer i am there when people show me the same courtesy....

Really hope you are ok, what a nasty thing to happen. Besides this guy being rude and unsympathetic, i find it quiet worrying that he wasn't even concerned that you had an accident at work.... please get yourself to a doctor you have more than bruising and its better to be safe than sorry (not suggesting this in a dodgy way). Hope you feel better soon. edited by mannikat on 30/12/2013

Not really, i read up on them a few years ago and bought a holga from here http://shop.lomography.com/ae/cameras/holga-cameras i played around with it a bit but i ended up leaving to go traveling and then moved here so it has languished in a cupboard back home for a few years. This thread has made me wish i dug it out at christmas! I would advise getting plenty of film and being prepared for the first (maybe more roles to come out blank not exposing the film has a bit of a knack, this might be more a of an issue with the holga than the gpp ones). Its a lot of fun to play around with and the limitation of photos on the film makes you contemplate your photos more carefully. I love the retro look of these and you can get some really cool filters and lens additions. Good luck with it, would love to hear how you get on with it. edited by mannikat on 29/12/2013

Read into this happening. Ask why? Jobs are harder to get worldwide, so the ones who are getting them are the men. That is what this news tells us. That women are not the first choice candidate, so to get a job they are movingg towards technical, guaranteed job careers, or venturing on their own. Either tough work, or risky work. The secure work, the everyday jobs that get women an income, are not being given to them. This reiterates that women are still second. I think that is a pretty negative way to look at it. Women are starting to believe in themselves and their skills and abilities and instead of waiting for someone to give them an opportunity they are making one for themselves. A very positive aspect of this is that they are being taken seriously enough for many of them to be successes. Why should women be excluded from entrepreneurship?

As for all this 'true friend' stuff, there are no rules, we all get sucked into our own lives on occasion be it family, relationships, children etc.... I don't stop trying with people just because that are at a busy point in their lives. Maybe the favour wont always be returned, thats life, but i dont give my friendship with conditions, OP you may or may not get this friendship back but i actually admire you for putting yourself out there and trying. Best of luck OP got married, had a baby, so let's say that's about a year. That has nothing to do with busy sorry. And yes TRUE friends do stay in touch. Regardless. I'm not going to argue but i do disagree. I have had enough ups and downs to know that things are not black and white and i have been on both sides of this. Busy is a relative term.

Well i often wondered the same, maybe it was something i did that made our friendship go sour. I cant think of anything for the life of me but who knows! I emailed her late last night and just have to wait and see. If i don't hear anything i definitely wouldn't try contacting her again but she really is someone who has been on my mind through my marriage, my pregnancy, and now in mother hood i always wish she was around. I never felt that way about any friend, even ones i've know since child hood. I know what happened was bad, but i'd really rather forget about it all than lose her forever (if there is a chance our friendship is worth saving). Well to be honest, a true friend who is really close to you should be able to be open with you. And tell you if you have said anything to hurt or upset her. Its not always that simple. Not suggesting the OP was a bridezilla, but relationships and marriage change people and maybe her friend found it hard for her own reasons. Being happy for your friends isn't always easy, my first husbands sister asked me to be her maid of honour at her wedding a year after he passed away, i love her and she is like a sister to me and i wanted her to be happy more than anything but the whole experience was horrific for me, i kept it to myself and smiled while i died on the inside. She deserved that happiness and i wasn't going to upset her with my feelings, that doesnt mean it was easy. We dont know why she stayed out of touch, perhaps she felt left out in the wedding plans and when she got deleted felt like she was truly out, time passes quickly and she may have felt it was too late.... I think the OP wants and needs some closure whether there is a response or not at least she can move on knowing she tried.

Hot air balloon ride; sky dive; yas driving experience? Nice wallet or a money clip with his initials? A watch/pocket watch? An engraved compass (might be a bit late for this) Or if he is into sentimental stuff you could make a photo album of 'Your journey together so far..' and leave some pages for the new arrival?

I think if its affecting you and on your mind so much, its worth trying to contact her, but out of self respect only do it once. Be prepared for what ever response you may get, I made a mistake years ago with a friend she was rude to my best friend and instead of leaving it i took sides by letting the friendship go we didn't fight i just stopped making an effort. When we got back in touch i apologised for what i had done and got a snotty reply expecting further grovelling from me, after this i just wished her all the best and left it, while it wasn't pleasant and i am glad i know what she is like and that it was more or less inevitable that the friendship would end. edited by mannikat on 17/12/2013

Best thing to do is go to the RTA and ask, get your NOC and make sure it has the right info. My licence is Irish but our PRO didn't know despite me telling him that Ireland is not part of the uk and had written that i was the holder of a British licence, which obviously didn't match so i had to get another letter. If the info on your NOC and visa match you should be fine, they are pretty helpful. I had issues with mine because our PRO had the letter in Arabic and i had no clue what it said, if it had been in English i could have sorted it before i went. I used the RTA office in Union coop near Safa. Worst case you might need to convert the your Australian licence at home and then convert the Irish one here

You will pay more for a personal loan in the long run, however the benefit is its unrelated to the property so its fully yours at all times. (not to say that a bank couldnt try if you defaulted but its more difficult) There are charges on both loan types for early payments so its best to see which offers the most flexible repayment plan (ie without early redemption charges etc) this will vary from bank to bank. Personally some family members have used personal loans in similar positions and they are very happy with their choice. Mortgages are really a more long term steady repayment thing but they have requirements on life and home insurance which a personal loan will not. Even if not required you should really have both to protect yourself.

Try Fibber Magees. I know it sounds pub grub but they have a catering section and the food is good. This was my first thought, got shot down re the p*rk thing, some staff wont eat anything if it comes from somewhere that preps p*rk even if its done properly/separately. Sorry i know i said western but i have to cater for everyone at the same time. edited by mannikat on 16/12/2013 edited by mannikat on 16/12/2013

This is a lovely fruit stuffing we use for goose, but might be rather nice with turkey, too? It's a Sophie Grigson recipe: 100g stoned prunes, roughly chopped 100g dried apricots, roughly chopped 85 ml port 2 eating apples, cored, peeled, diced 1 small red onion, chopped half teaspoon ground cinammon half teaspoon ground nutmeg salt and freshly ground pepper Soak prunes and apricots for as long as possible (shurely shome mishtake, Ed.) in the port - overnight or even a couple of days if you remember. Mix with all the remaining ingredients (don't worry that it seems sloppy - as the goose has a long, slow cooking time, it will all meld together loosely in the oven). Put the stuffing in the body cavity. I don't think this was meant for this thread, lovely recipe but i have no intention of cooking for the office :)

If you buy in the uk i think you can claim the tax back when you leave? Worth looking into. if you buy online and its valued at over 250usd you will be charged customs tax when it arrrives and sns charge a processing fee also. Got mine in duty free Dublin airport about 1000 aed cheaper, and with a bunch of accessories.

Let's face it, Dubai is a career-ender for many women. Great if you're into admin or HR, but for the rest of us, a huge black hole. I've even known lawyers to turn to school administration because there isn't anything else reasonable here. Not necessarily true. I had a career as a PA and Admin Officer back in the UK and I haven't managed to get anything similar out here. I'm now turning to work I did when I left school at 16, just to do something. Opposite for me, i struggled to get my foot in the door as woman with no GCC experience but now that i am in there is a good career track. Plus a woman in oil and gas is a novelty which helps. I dont know how kids will affect this though, i can't see myself back at work in 45days and i certainly wont be getting any additional leave unpaid or otherwise....

Have a look here: http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/yeast-hidden-cause-your-exhaustion I felt the same a while ago and did the same blood tests, was eating very healthy, exercising and couldn't understand why I didn't feel better. I saw the episode linked to this article and did the yeast test as described in the article which indicated that I did in fact have yeast overgrowth. I bought some probiotic tablets from the pharmacy and continued with my healty diet and exercise. I also tried to include more things like nuts, brown rice instead of white etc. and I have to say I do feel better, less brain fog and more energy. Apparently this is very common yet never something that doctors check or give advice on. Maybe give this a go and see if it helps. I really hope you are able to get it sorted. edited by TT29 on 10/12/2013 I have pretty much all of those, i will definitely check this out, thank you so much for posting.

You are clearly doing too much. Stop doing the exercise on your own, replace it with something you enjoy like a sport or spa or read a book or whatever makes you happy. And consider that you might be sick with something else? Have you had a full physical? I haven't had a full physical but i have had a bunch of blood tests, i will give this ago. I try and go for a massage most weeks, so its not like i don't treat myself. Anything else strange? Any other symptoms? People tend to go straight for depression but I think depression is usually a symptom of something else ... I've been depressed before and it was brought on by bereavement, recently it was the result of being chucked into the menopause unnecessarily by an incompetent doctor, followed by a miscarriage. Now personally i feel good and interested in my life i just feel tired all the time. Perhaps it is something underlying but i haven't noticed other symptoms. that does sound horrendous. I am glad you are recovering mentally but perhaps your hormones are completely out of wack still? have you had them checked? I imagine it would take a very long time to get right again after going through what you mentioned above. There are some great vitamins for re-balancing womens hormones. I think agnus cactus and evening primrose are both really good but I think you need to seek professional advice before you start taking anything. My insurance wont cover the tests and my gp said once my period was ok my hormones were most likely ok. I think i will look into it now though as everything else is fine so its a possibility. My lovely GP Dr Deamer (not the Dr that gave me the menopause) has left so i need to find someone new to sort me out i think. edited by mannikat on 10/12/2013

oh dear, you poor thing. I have been there (not with kids) i think you need a bit more than me time although i am sure that will help. i don't want to jump the gun or suggest you are depressed but...having suffered from depression 10 years ago and ptsd more recently i know what its like to just feel like the light has gone out and nothing seems to make you happy. Everything annoys you, going from anger to tears in seconds and the feeling of 'should' be happy and 'should' be better makes the hole even deeper. Taking to a professional can really help. When i first suffered from depression i had a really great circle of friends to rely on when i finished up counselling and i felt i could really talk to them about it and it helped me 'top up' as it were. Here as lovely as my friends here are i can't really talk to them about this also the ptsd knocked me right back into my depression 'pit' and really needed professional help and a safe space to get out. At the moment I'm still exhausted (just posted a thread about it) but feeling a lot better in myself. I hope this helps and i really wish you all the best. xx

Depression can make you feel tired all the time..... Hope that's not the case for you I suffered with PTSD last year, as a result of mistreatment in a hospital here. I can tell you it was horrendous. I went to a wonderful counsellor and she has really helped me get back to myself, now i just feel like my body is letting me down a bit.. i had finished up with her as i was 'on track' as it were dieting, exercising and meditating. I can go back anytime but i am not sure what she can do for me.

American Hustle already sold out. Unfortunately by the time we get to watch it it will be cut to shreds. And why aren't films like Blue Jasmine or Philomena here yet? It is ridiculous that we miss out on so many great films. I know they aren't mainstream blockbusters but honestly, there is an audience here if they'd bothered to show them. Why they can't dedicate a cinema screen at say MOE for just [b'>'arthouse[/b'>' films? One of the things i really miss about home! Disappointed they aren't showing 'the summit' at DIFF

Well I'm Catholic so advent and Christmas mass are the main things that are important to me at Christmas and in the spirit of this site when other religious holidays occur people tend to encourage us the look at those traditions and what they really mean so i would like to do the same without offending anyone. Christmas is a really special time, its all about family, hope and new beginnings without getting too religious on everyone i think we can all celebrate those things. I love presents and fab food as much as anyone but its about so much more. I was here last Christmas and found this side very hard, I went to mass here and was really uspet at how all my favourite Christmas hymns were murdered i was in tears in church at silent night! (on a weekly basis i don't usually mind) but came home and realised that being there and celebrating was more important. Really looking forward to midnight mass at home this year with my family!! By all means do the santa thing but make it more if you can :)

Right this the recipe my Mum uses its from an old school book of hers its rich but i love it! Rich Christmas Cake Ingredients: 9 oz raisins; 9 oz sultanas; 12 oz currants; 6 oz mixed peel; 3 oz prunes; 3 oz dates; 3 oz cherries; 1/2 apple; 3 oz chopped almonds; 3 oz ground almonds; 1/4 tsp mixed spice; grated rind of 1/2 a lemon; 9 oz butter; 9 oz castor sugar; 6 eggs; 11 oz flour; 1 glass whisk*y; 1/4 tsp baking powder. Method: 1. Prepare fruit, blanch almonds, chop and mix well with fruit in bowl, add spice, ground almonds, lemon rind and chopped mixed peel; mix all thoroughly. 2. Put butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until light and creamy, using a wooden spoon or electric mixer. Beat eggs and add gradually to the creamed mixture. Beat well. Mix in a little flour between addition of eggs if liked. 3. Fold in the remainder of the sieved flour and baking powder, using a metal spoon. Mix in the prepared fruit and half of the whiskey. 5. Turn into a prepared 9 inch round tin, spread with a knife, leaving a slight hollow in the centre. 6. Bake in a slow oven for about 4 hours. Test with a warm skewer. Lift out of the oven and pour the remainder of the whiskey over. 7. Leave the cake in the tin until cold. Turn out, remove paper, and wrap in cooking foil and store until required. * slow oven = around 150 Celsius, gas mark 2 I didn't get a chance to check with my mum but i remember her soaking the fruit in whisk*y over night when i was growing up. It doesn't taste boozy at all. Enjoy

Salaries aren't very high for Gyms/PT here, not to begin with anyway but there are plenty of people from the Uk working in the industry here. Perhaps try Fitness First and Gold's. Re sales very hard to get into unless you have GCC experience but once you have that you can move up quickly. Lots of estate agents are hiring at the moment.

I've seen Cirque du Soleil, Swan lake and the Illusionists there. There has definitely been an improvement in the organisation between the three. The seating was tiered for all three but for Cirque it was free seating in each section which was awful, we were there early but the q's were huge, luckily we didn't get stuck behind one of the stage pillars . (there was no mention of restricted view when we booked). For the other shows the seating was assigned. Having seen three very different shows, i think the stage sound etc... is really down to the production company as it was only for swan lake that the stage and sound were bad. I think with Cirque it should be fine and if there is assigned seating there shouldn't be any problem. Enjoy. edited by mannikat on 03/12/2013
