And will also depend on size of villa and if children and animals are to be cared for in addition to housework and or Gardening. All households vary and employers expectations also.

Leeks are available in carrefour and spinneys if you cannot see them . Just ask.Bought some last weekend in Carrefour. Thanks so much Sarah! Do you know if "leek" exist here in Dubai as a vegetable? I love to make lots of soups and in Belgium I use onion and leek as a basis, so I ate it a lot, but here have not found it, I was in Carrefour, Spinneys, Waitrose, but not there.

To be fair , it depends where home is in the Philippines and time of year. Some have to travel further than Manila to get home , many more hours and can be quite expensive as most do not earn high salaries.. I would suggest pay for the flights to get home, there may be also an internal flight or long bus travel. You need to be fully aware of prices as the cost to fly home can soar and they could find they cannot afford to go home with the allowance you give. Result dissatisfied employees. Brilliant thank you ladies. 2,400 Aed seems fair then.

Your own Doctors clinic should have these except yellow fever. They should be able to tell you where to go for this specific one . One place it has been available is the city Hospital near Wafi Mall. Check if your insurance will cover some of them and bring your information on your previous vaccinations as you may not require some if you already have had sufficient or you may just need a booster. Hi Where is the best place to go to get holiday jabs? I need Yellow fever, tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A. I guess it's going to be an expensive and horrible morning out!

Brand I use cost 340 dirhams for 12 weeks and I noticed are manufactured in Ireland. The contact lenses are for 2 weeks x 6 x 2 contact lenses, different lens for each eye. I think people coming from U S A do bring them as they work out cheaper. You can contact Magrabi or Grand optics directly if you need additional information. http://www.magrabioptical.com/ http://www.grandoptics.com/

You generally have 30 days from date of purchase to claim, unless it has changed. If you do not have the postal address for claiming your tax back ( as you would post the paperwork required and they will process a refund on a credit card) ,it sounds as if you have time to wait until offices open on Monday if you are unable to locate the information you require on the internet. Good luck.

Christmas Tree and decorations along with nativity scene statues etc is fine . Christmas is celebrated in the U A E although is different to what you will have been used to in UK. Bibles and Christian literature if for personal use will be ok to bring. These are also sold in a large book shop in Dubai Mall. There are Churches in Jebel Ali and Oud Metta in Dubai if you wish to seek them out after you arrive. Good luck with you move.

Some things we took into consideration. Full time boarding school ( exeat weekend once a month and can go to relative) also has some day boarders and day pupils Small boarding school 300 pupils. Near supportive Relatives Easy access to airport Structured school and uniform Has a mix of boarders who's family live nearby or in the country and also boarders who families live abroad and of different nationalities. Did not want a school where there was only a few boarders Wanted a school where there were families like us who lived abroad. Oldest Teenager visited a number of boarding schools prior to going and decided on this school and now child no 3 is there. All three were happy.

Recent boarding school experience may be more relevant than past as past could be 20 years ago. Current boarding schools facilities are very different in today's world and children are not as isolated from their parents as availability of various types of communication is better and school probably have a better range of clubs and activities also. If your able to send them near a relative or friend who can take them on long weekends if your school has them it is better. If you are in a position to bring your child home frequently ,they can get back during the school year possibly every 6-8 weeks, this may depend what country and system you send them to. Send them to a school where they are plenty of boarders rather than a school with only a few . My youngest went back yesterday, she loves the boarding school and loves coming home also and this was someone who was never going to boarding school, yet life alters ! ( Youngest went boarding at 16). Unless the education you have is not suitable here you do not need to send them at an early age for education, boarding school is not all about academics and it will help them with some life skills they may not get the exposure to here and will compliment life exposure they have had living here. Looking at options about sending DD to boarding school but before any solid decision is made wanted to know about experience or feedback from one's who have actually been boarding school residents in past? Is there anyone willing to share their feedback? How was life in boarding school? did you feel abandoned by your parents? sense of detachment from parents? positive life influences staying in boarding school? Any feedback is appreciated.... edited by McB on 07/05/2014 <em>edited by McB on 07/05/2014</em>

Maybe Remraan would be a good place for you but you would need friends to take an apt if you wanted to share . Hi, I'm new to Dubai and looking for a shared villa/apt at least within 15 minutes drive to media city. Currently Im driving around 30 minutes on good days to get to work or worst around 45mins (especially in the evenings). I have limited housing allowance, so then again I dont have much choices on the areas. Any advise would be useful. Thank you. edited by newinthecity14 on 20/04/2014

Gosh, I never knew it was illegal to leave your home or car unlocked in the U A E ( don't know if it is same in other countries around the world ) C W where can we find these rules so as to be better informed, have tried looking but maybe you can point me to the correct website link for these rules. Thanks ...................... According to Dubai Police rules, it is illegal to leave your home or car unlocked, so you do leave yourself open to prosecution if they so wished. Of course they will still apprehend the 'Indian' but it is a totally different case to a forced entry.

Sorry to learn this break in has happened and awful someone can enter ones house/ break in without permission. It is easy to leave a door open in error although I am amazed at some people who leave doors open all the time but maybe they do not have belongings that bother them if broken into and are taken. Not sure if bringing in registration cards for maid and house boys, drivers would be successful ( and would more than likely have to be paid for by residents ). It will be another money making machine rather than addressing security. See the latest venture charging for registration of moving vans in Arabian Ranches . Increasing costs of living again. Hi ladies, I have had a look at the symptoms that are caused by it and looks quite familiar. I don't want to diagnose myself so would like to see a doctor. Do any of you ladies have a Dr. you would recommend? I'd prefer a female Dr. if possible. TIA!

Have you looked at your thermostat and tried to cancel your timer yet ? I suggest you contact tool time again and ask for a senior supervisor to come and discuss the issue and if he cannot solve it get to speak to a manager.Give yourself a target to have the problem resolved in 2 weeks. It is obvious something is not functioning correctly , Blinds closed need to have black out ( assuming they have), doors closed and it could be as simple as it needs to be manually operated. So you need someone who knows how to get the thermostat changed to manual to start with and then after that see if you still have an issue once operating on manual. If you still have an issue go back to the senior person who you dealt with. Keep with the issue until it is resolved, if tool time cannot sort after full investigation it means they do not have the knowledge in the company even at a higher level and I am sure someone in the company will know. Will be interesting to learn if you get this resolved. Good luck Tool Time service the air con every quarter. Not exactly sure what this entails but normally it seems to require a part being replaced and at least one room not working for weeks afterwards (so wish our LL had not got this maintenance contract). I keep the blinds closed and the only electronic items in the bedroom are two bedside lamps both using low energy (and low heat) CFL bulbs and two iPads. DH is banned from using the halogen lights fitted in the house (I am trying to get these changed to LED - low energy and heat) and we rarely turn on the ceiling light. As for the thermostat issue I'm not exactly sure how to operate it manually at night? Set an alarm to wake myself up to turn the aircon on and off during the night? At the moment we have the thermostat set to 22, the room apparently reaches this temperature (although I get cold very easily and it feels nothing like 22, closer to 24) then the air con switches off, that's it. I wake up at around 4am baking hot and have to reset the thermostat. The weird thing about the thermostat issue is that it will read 22, then I switch it to manual and the air con switches on, then within a few minutes it will read the actual room temperature (normally 27ish - this is when the room is actually cooling so it should go down not up!). The thermostat in the spare bedroom actually works perfectly. Just most annoyingly the master bedroom (where baby will sleep at first) and the room we intend on using as a nursery (which is next to the master bedroom, hence why we would prefer this room as a nursery rather than the spare bedroom at the other end of the house). The thermostat in the bedroom was replaced twice by Tool Time in the last three weeks, the panel has also been replaced once in the last month. It seems we have Tool Time in our house every day at the moment. Perhaps if I keep on bugging them they will eventually send someone with a brain. Otherwise I guess will try Emrill and see if they are any better, but frankly I'm not keen on 'maintenance' companies they don't seem that bothered about actually fixing anything. Are there any good companies that work on a pro rata basis (i.e. if they don't fix something you can refuse to pay until they do - a little incentive to get them to actually do the work). Perhaps a company with actual trained staff instead of 20 guys who just fumble around replacing parts? edited by RuthM on 03/04/2014

Are you referring to the park near Saheel Gate 4 or near Saheel Gate 1 ? Doors best kept locked and install garage door if villa does not have one and keep it closed. Has anyone heard about attempted burglaries in Saheel 1? Had a letter through my door today saying some Park Road East residents (backing onto the park/free space) have experienced break ins. Getting nervous....

Our A C serviced 3 times a year since the villa was occupied. If the sun is on the rooms that are struggling to reduce further in temperature it will be difficult to get it to a level of 18 degrees. Unfortunately you have to keep getting it looked at but using different staff until you hit on an experienced person who does something different and it works. We have struggled with one bedroom in particular but the a c shares another area also. Over the years we struggled to get it below 22, and eventually 20 and bedroom doors and bathroom doors are all kept closed and in this bedroom the heavy curtain with black out remains closed in the summer to reduce heat and we do not keep patio doors open when A C is on . A few months ago after 8 years it improved further as after a service a different team what ever the chap did made a big difference behind the grill. On the next service the team did something and it did not function as strong again and called them back and told them them they have changed something and to get it back to better function after discussion and with reluctance they changed it to be stronger as we required. When it is the height of the summer heat I do not expect this bedroom to cool to 18 maybe 20 but I would have to keep it on most of the day to achieve that, curtains closed and doors closed. You may have a different system to me but I use my thermostat manually , I never ever put it on timer, or have it reaches a certain level to shut off as I prefer manual control. Check if you can put it on manual and control the system yourself. I use Emrill for servicing. Good luck It's a problem we've had for years now. The air conditioning in the master bedroom struggles to get the room below 22 degrees. We're in a six year old villa in Arabian Ranches so would expect a quality system. The lounge (below) the master bedroom can get cooler but the bedroom cannot. Tool Time advise us this is as cold as it gets. 22 degrees is optimistic is often sits at around 24 degrees. To make matters worse a few of the thermostats in the villa have this frustrating problem whereby once the room reaches the desired temperature the air con turns off but when it warms up again it doesn't turn back on. So the temperature just rises and rises. I have an alarm (separate) that alerts me when it gets to 25 but this means waking up in the middle of the night to turn the air con on. Switching the air con to manual and waiting a few minutes seems to reset the thermostat to the actual room temperature then you can switch it back to auto and wait for it to turn itself off indefinitely again. Tool Time have been called out many many times and again, absolutely useless. Now we have a baby due in August. As per Lullaby Trust guidelines I would really like to maintain the bedroom between 18-20 degrees at night. Is this possible in Dubai? Do others have this same issue? What do you do? Are Tool Time lying and just lazy and useless? <em>edited by McB on 03/04/2014</em>

Micdoc, You must be very strong to have kept going , don't doubt yourself as too many others including professionals in medicine will. I may be in a position to point you in a right direction. If you wish Call me on zero five zero six four zero three five one three Kind regards Hi, After six years and many doctors later, I have been diagnosed with and I quote "panic attacks???". The question marks on my doctors referral are a little worrying! I have been suffering with what I though were dizzy spells although it feels a bit more as if I'm about to fall forwards, face first into the floor. I also have times when I'm out and about that I feel like I'm walking on a trampoline. I have had an MRI, saw an ENT doctor, Internal Medicine doctor, had everything checked out by a gyn doctor as I even began to believe it may be symptoms of menopause and even a neurologist. I haven't myself been to these doctors of my own accord, only on recommendation, I am not a person who likes the attention or anything like that, I hate being ill and only go to seek help when I feel like I have an infection , regular health check ups etc. I have good days etc and get on with things as you do but these 'episodes' have always been there. Sometimes you just have to get on with it regardless. I have 3 children and a husband who constantly travels and at times works in other countries. This is nothing new.. my husband has worked away for years, so I am used to being on my own with the kids and it hadn't been an issue up until a few years back. We have been married for 24 years and he has travelled all that time, we have lived in Canada, Abu Dhabi and here in Dubai for ten years now and I have coped pretty damn well, even though I say so myself. I am now 47 years old, my kids are 10, 12 and 19, the oldest now at university. I do feel at times like a single Mum, I have been raising the kids by myself for 6 - 10 weeks at a time on my own. My husband does his best when he is home, but I am the primary parent. Maybe, the stress has taken it's toll, when I have been engaged in just being Mum. I have help, part time, so no long hours of doing ironing , cleaning floors etc but I have always insisted that I am the person that wakes them, feed them, puts them to bed and be their Mum. My maid cleans, that is all. I have no financial worries and had a good social life and I have the most amazing friends, although not all know of my 'circumstances'. In all, I know, I have it pretty good compared to some. I cannot think of why I have panic attacks or if that is what I have? So, I went to the doctors, for another reason but just thought while I was there to ask about the 'dizziness'.Once more , I told yet another doctor about the symptoms and he thinks I am having panic attacks. I really don't know what to think but I guess everything else hasn't worked or produced a solution so may as well give this a go. I have re- read and re-edited this post so much! I am exhausted and hope that anyone who reads it does not think that I am a raving lunatic, but just hoping that someone can give me a recommendation to someone that has a clue?!! I would appreciate if the person is Western and no offense to anyone intended. I have tried in vain to talk to doctors who will literately not give me the time of day because my symptoms do not fit in to their type of medicine and tell me to try elsewhere but have no idea where. I do appreciate anyone who took the time to read this. I am not looking for sympathy, I am so over that! If anyone has any information or advice, that would be helpful. TIA <em>edited by McB on 03/04/2014</em>

Which school were you with in Cairo? As you more than likely already know , School heads know one another and are part of organisations and why not contact the school in Cairo and see if they can put you in contact with someone in Dubai. Depending on the school you taught at in Cairo, it may be easier once contact is made with a school in Dubai to have you C V looked at . High achieving schools in Cairo ( results) are similar to a few high achieving schools here in Dubai and I am sure would jump at an experienced Middle east secondary teacher. Remember the cultural experience and integration you may have experienced in Cairo is worth a lot and no one coming from Europe will have this experience. Emlsnre - I looked at the list of staff at VH and I know one of them (not to well) from Cairo. Unfortunately I'm Secondary so it won't help me in this instance. My job prospects are more limited! Lolacat - I think you're right actually! The package just doesn't look that attractive as there is no relocation or education allowance which will be a huge expense in years to come and I can't count on that being in my package (I don't think) as I'll more than likely be a local hire. McB - I am applying for jobs from the UK, however when we get down to the nitty gritty of who will be accompanying me etc then I will undoubtedly have to mention my husband - which will probably affect the benefits that are offered to me in my package as (from what I gather) these are assumed to be provided under the husbands contract. Perhaps I'm wrong? Thanks admin - I applied for a couple of posts off the jobs page! Thanks again for all your advice!

Having lived in Cairo and children attended a high profile school there for many years. Dubai is a very different experience. Cost of living and pressures can be high. Why not apply for jobs through UK rather than be employed locally if it is not too late. I don't mean to be nasty, it's a genuine question you have to ask yourself. I didn't take your comment as nasty - it's a genuine question! I fully intend to work, however at this point (and his contract was only offered last week), i feel like I may have missed the boat with much of the recruitment. It was never our intention to live off one wage, however my experience of being in the middle east tells me that there is a potential that I might pick up a teaching job at some point as there are no-shows and re-advertisements for a number of reasons. I know there is absolutely no reason why we can't survive on 2 wages, but am genuinely asking if we could do it short term on only one wage. My husbands job are providing medical and flights, so I know that is one less expense. I'm not penny pinching as such, I just don't want to move out there, realise we've made a terrible decision, struggle financially and live to regret it. Also, I HATE shopping! One of the reasons my hubbie and I get along so well! I'm well aware of the brats - I taught in a lovely (high profile) school in Cairo so I'm well versed in how difficult children can be from well off backgrounds. I'm no stranger to hard work. The reason we want to move is because I gave up my job in Cairo when I met my husband (who lived back in the UK), and although I've never regretted coming home, I have never really been satisfied with being back in the UK...I have very itchy feet!!

Good things have calmed down now but I do wonder why people message when it is better to pick up the phone and speak. it drives me nuts with my children texting etc and trying to get them to understand there are times you need to speak. Times are changing and not always for the better. Beware, this may be the start of many more situations like this, ah children !!!!!!!!!! Love them . My son was invited last minute to his friends sister birthday event. His friend doesn't want to the only boy there so invited my son along for the company, so I'm told by my sons friend that his mum will call me but nothing and although I know her (she seems nice enough) I didn't want to make the call to presume he's going. My sons up at 6:30 this morning excited to be going out with his friend and goes off to their house to see the whole family leaving already for the party with no explanation to him drove off saying see you later!. My son comes home explained what had happened so I've sent a message to the mum asking her in a very polite way if he'd been invited or perhaps it was just a story concocted by the boys.....she's sent an apologetic message saying daughter doesn't want any boys at party, if it was up to her and her son he would be going, but no he's not invited. Why didn't they explain this to him or send me a message last night so I could tell him instead they've made him feel sad and left me fuming in how they handled it.......I'm not wanting my son to see how angry I am as I can also see that him and his friend tried to manipulate the situation but I'm angry at how the parents dealt with it! Am I overeacting?

There are many many people who know your challenges and trying to be the best mother you can be. Be kind to yourself, stop trying to do it all on your own, super woman does not exist and you need sleep and someone to give you a break. With a husband who travels, even if it is going to ease off soon you may still need help. My advice is if you can manage to have a maid full time, take one on so it allows flexibility and ignore anyone's comments where they do it all themselves, no ones life is perfect. It is too tough to have regular help from friends and people move unexpectedly and go in different directions as children grow up so best to employ if you can. Double buggies are difficult to manage, ( these are new to the middle east ) so why not use a single buggy and get a child's harness/arm lead for the older child ( not sure what they are called see in Mothercare) .For some reason people do not seem to want to use them these days but they are excellent managing children when out and about walking or shopping. Sometimes it may be better to leave children at home ( forget super woman ) and this you could do if you had a maid or bring her with you on occasions to assist. Taking your children out here and shopping is not like at home for many people as here with so many languages, cultures and different norms etc etc staff understanding what we are asking looking for can cause frustration. As we do not always understand one another hence the person saying what he said about people like you, he is probably fed up of people pushing there way in but in this case did not realise you were genuine and not queue jumping. I found shopping less stressful a number of years ago as there were not many mothers with buggies and expectations but now Dubai has changed and there are so many younger families and the shopping experience is very different and always evolving so on that note just remember evolving and maybe regular help will assisting with your family evolving and you deserve to be under less pressure too. Raising a family is the hardest task on earth as we are wanting to raise children to be great decent citizens for the world. Good luck being the best mother you can be and be kind to yourself also.

May be able to assist you . I understand there will be a link road from Remraan through Sports city area not sure where, which will link to Hessa st towards Marina, link roads may take a while to be built but it is supposed to be on the cards. If you wish email me on mcburney mail at gmail.com( the family family name and mail are one word @) Hi We've just moved to Dubai from Ireland and looking at places to live. I can see rents are going up & up in price. We have viewed apt in Remraam & think they are quite nice- has anyone got feedback on this area?? How long is it to drive to Marina ?? We haven't been to Layan yet but they look nice also. Any other suggestions are welcome

Good she is laughing having had some relief. How is your baby daughter this morning ? Hope she slept over night. These very ripe fruits will help to make things shift along with water. Thank god she's laughing and seems very happy now but I feel there is still some left. I'll wait and see how she is tomorrow. If she is in pain I'll try suppository again. Also planning to give her some prunes and pears tomorrow.

Your baby will be fine so do not worry, yes uncomfortable but will be ok. Freshly squeezed orange juice(squeeze yourself) will help but again don't overload try one to two teaspoons and again in a few hours + water to drink Maybe baby needs less solids and gently introduce a teaspoon a day and build up, stick with one food for a few days until your happy there is no issue, then introduce another again only a teasp. Water is necessary also. Steer clear of banana for now as these can block one.when you do intro due in a few months make sure they are very very ripe and not too much. Hope she will feel better by tomorrow.

All children are different. My youngest we expected to finish school here but life changing events brought about change and she started boarding in September 2013 at 16.5.years old. Thankfully she is very happy and it is giving her a very different experience in a smaller school in a different country and can come back and see friends, hopefully some will be around over Christmas. to anyone who is contemplating- Do not listen to those who may have a comment you rather would not like to hear and if it does not work out be prepared to change direction. More often than not ,It is not necessary in this day to need to send a child boarding at 9 years old but years ago it may have been the case. Age is a factor , if it is a boarding school with many boarders or just a few and the number of times they can get home within a year. If you child is happy and getting a good education here they may as well stay with family here at home as long as they can and when ready they can spread their wings they will be it 13/14 15/16 or older. Boarding schools are very different as is life from 20 years ago . Computers , phones make contact so much easier.
