If you have been advised to go on roacutane for a fourth time I would question it also. One thing I have learned if you do not take the correct dose for the correct period it will not be successful as some people stop taking it too soon and acne reoccurs. There may be other reasons why you have reoccurring acne and it is not always easily resolved for some people. What ever oral medication taken may have side affects. Hope you do not have it again There are many things that can be done for acne these days - I had it severely as a teenager and then a few times as an adult. I've also used roacutane a few times and would only recommend it as a last resort (I think this is what you mean by side effects?). I would advise seeing a dermotologist rather than trying various skin care products. I can recommend Dr al Nassr on al Wasl Road. The last outbreak I had (of genuine acne, not just spots) he managed to clear up with a combination of topical meds, antibiotics and birth control. I'd seen a number of other doctors who were eager to prescribe roacutane to clear it up but I was hesitant to go back on them for a fourth time and at the time he was highly recommended on here, and so I went to see him. I wouldn't say his bed side manner is the best, and if you want things explained you do need to ask but I was very happy with his treatment and would return to him if I have acne again.

Is the 40 km part of your Km to and fro from work ?. Anyone going to Abu Dhabi 4 times a week would be considered high use.Although travelling from one end of Dubai to another can be up to 30 Km. I Long story short I go to Abu Dhabi 4 nights a week to see a friend. They charge petrol at pump prices but it's the wear and tear at 2.5 dirhams a km that's adding up like a monster on ster I am grateful to have the car but 40km seems like nothing when you consider how far everything is here. Yes all the rules were laid out in advance.

Logistics- take her to the airport yourself or your husband. Suggest to give her sufficient hard currency( - US Dollars or Euro t)o exchange when she gets to Manila to pay her way home to her Island and food. If you over pay don't stress, just be glad when you have done the right thing and given her sufficient money to get to her family and you will be able to relax. Good luck today and hope all works out for you. Agree blue, it has become tedious. We have booked her a plane ticket for tomorrow. Now just have to work out the logistics so that it goes as smoothly as can be expected. Not looking forward to tomorrow and will be mighty relieved when all over.

Not everyone has the time to read all yet useful to have different peoples input for those trying to figure out what is the best of a difficult situation. Certainly the aggressiveness of many does not always warrant reading everything on threads. quote=AnneCoulter'>Why are people responding but saying they have not read all the thread? Like, would that not be the prudent thing...instead of sending this around in circles. Same answers over and over. eeeeesh

I have not read every response and you sound very reasonable. Maybe cancel her visa and give her 30 days to find a job, Not sure , but can she stay with her sister for that 30 days ? or other friends so she is not in your home ? You see the risk as greater as you and not familiar with the set up and people can generate panic in others very easily. Sounds like she would be better off with a different employer who can meet her needs and you would be much better off with someone else who meets your family needs and less stress for you. Strong maids can become an issue depending on the dynamics in a household. If you live in A R. There is a maid coming end of May who will be looking for work in A R I have been told and she lived in Dubai for a number of years.I know her relative who lives and works in Dubai. Good luck with your difficult situation. Interesting that you say immigration would also advise sending her home. DHs work (HR and PRO) has now advised him not to fly her home but to cancel her visa and then let her have the 30 days to find something new. Funny how they don't seem concerned about the risk, but they have never had a problem with this approach so far. What I really don't get is how on earth you are meant to make sure they leave the country after the 30 days if they are no longer living with you. Of course DH now wants to do as his work suggests as he is that sort of guy, and also very trusting. I think he's also very uncomfortable with the idea of wrestling maid into car, into airport etc. He's a real softie and usually leaves the hard stuff to me (he has not got involved with talking to the maid at all about all this yet). Can anyone give me a number or website for immigration so I can see what they say. And yes its definitely suspicious that she's come back from sisters all smoochy, but only to the extent that she now wants something from us ie to stay in Dubai. She knows she has got to butter us up.

Ask the school if they could remind the children what side of the road/path to walk/ cycle.\ I am sure they will accommodate and already aware they do try to educate the children with safety issues such as Road Safety. We all need reminding of stuff. Close shave, coming back from MC,first roundabout after security in Sav,a kid on a bike going the wrong way round the roundabout looking behind him,if i hadn't almost reversed(on the roundabout) he would have cycled right over my car!! it was obviously a cycle race home,he cut back out past security in Mirador direction. Do kids In Jess school know about Road Safety??

Sounds as if it will work out fine. Drivers room decorated to be welcoming and the ability to have friends over will be very positive for her . When people are more reasonable with home help life gets easier ( I am not talking about bending over backwards ) but to be reasonable and have respect for others . Good luck with your move and hope all works out as I am sure it will knowing what you have told us now. We've had a chat and her initial reaction was not to come with us. So I mentioned about the visa etc and I think she calmed down. The talk went quite well. She has friends in Springs and I did say it's a lot closer and I could always drop her off if I was going out. Equally in winter the walk would be fine. I mentioned there is a drivers room in the garage - it's pretty awful but could be made nice. It does seem that she would like her friends to come round and couldn't have them in the house so to have them visit and use the drivers room could be an option. It appears this is the main problem for her. So who knows? We are going to see the villa soon and she can make a decision. She does need to stay until mid July so might get used to the idea and find it's not as bad as she thinks. I do want her to be happy but there is a limit as to how far I will bend! edited by McB on 22/05/2013

Good you are asking and wanting to sort out what to do .I find it appalling some people forget their maid is like us all and needs to be treated with respect. It is understandable she is reluctant to move and concerned just like many people would be . My advice would be ask her to give it a try for the next few months or until her visa finishes and if she says no accept it with grace.I was recently at Jumeriah Islands and would not have thought it was so near to walk to the shopping centre at Meadows/ springs in the extreme heat and humidity. We in Dubai have been very fortunate with such good weather this year up until now. I would not give a bedroom in the main part of the villa as it may prove difficult at a later time. If she agrees to move for a trial period , Buy her a bicycle and teach her to ride it. Give her additional space to store things if there is insufficient space in her room. Don't begrudge her not wanting to move, if she is not happy it will be reflected in her work and happiness living with your family. A maid is like most of us away from home and wanting to survive and be near friends. Fear of change needs to managed gently not bull in a china shop approach. Good luck what ever you decide to do. Has anybody had this situation? We are moving to Jumeriah Islands and are within walking distance of the main shops in Meadows/Springs but our maid says she prefers where we are because of buses and friends. Also the maids room is small and DH has suggested we give her the downstairs bedroom - I'm not happy about that! Her current room is accessed outside which has been great whereas the room in JI is within the house. This will be a learning curve for me! How have you managed to work around the small room issue? Her visa runs until December so do we make her come and hope she settles in? She has been fine for our family and we have had few problems in the 2 1/2 years she has been with us. Any words of wisdom?

Until people stand up and say no ,companies will get away with this. Surely a gift card is the same as cash or credit card so why should companies have an expiring date on a gift card, after all ,they already have the money in the bank and making interest.

I remember the days when people were shocked at the thought of others moving to Arabian Ranches and would not want to go to even visit friends at A R. Now everyone likes A R and roads were built in due course. It is only a matter of time before everything improves further out. Most new projects have a small shop until building is built for a larger shop, if Remraan does not have one now it will in time as more people move in.

If your husband travels alot and you have no other family to call upon my advice if you can manage to keep this gem , DO! Children get sick, parents get sick, cars breakdown etc etc and if you are not from this part of the world it can get abit much at times. You can offer a good quality and maybe less stressful life to your maid along with a salary she may be grateful to have also. Re think the privacy issue, there way be another way around that, just have her working for certain hours. Always good to have someone in your villa when you are away, and Dubai has and is changing. Hi, I need some advice and I'm hoping you ladies will give me some advice. I employed a full time live in maid when I thought I was going back to work a year ago. Her visa is up for renewal soon and this coincides with my youngest starting school. In many ways I miss my privacy and really would like this back. But my main reason for questioning myself as to whether to keep her is, we have a small villa, house work is minimal and with both kiddies being in school and me being home full time. I just feel like I can't justify spending all the money to renew her visa. We away during summer and she went home in dec, so she'll be home with really no real work. She's someone I trust my kids with. I'm really fond of her, her coming into my life allowed me to have some time to myself and I really am so grateful for that. But now with dd starting school, I will get mornings to myself to do housework or whatever. My husband travels quite a bit so it is a comfort knowing I have her. What would you do?

I do not know anything about this subject Dyslexia . My son at age 4.5 years, we were told by his nursery in the UK he was left handed. He was having speech therapy as he was not speaking much before he started school while at nursery at this young age and within 8 weeks of starting normal school he improved his speech as suspected he had a great vocabulary but did not speak much at this early age. Reading did not really kick in until 8 years old and having had 3 children who were /are fine at school I would say my experience is , proper reading really starts at 8 years old. Yes maybe before this age they are reading by memory, I think the demands from society to achieve early may not always be the best. My son would only do what he needed to when studying but I know when he gets into the working world he will do fine. He is right handed, not left as we were told, he speaks confidently on many subjects as has been in debating teams, he reads things he is interested in from politics to economics and anything in between. All 3 children have and are doing well at school She is only 6, yes I know one needs to keep an eye if there could be a bigger issue but hopefully in her case she is fine. Good luck and don't get caught up in the rat race of keeping up with the Joneses. Hi my wee one who is almost 6 is struggling very much with her reading, writing at school, I've read that this is still too young to test for dyslexia as they are still developing but last night she was soundin out and saying letters that weren't even on the page and I asked her if she saw those letters on the page and she said yes. Does anyone know of anywhere I could go for her to be tested or any other options welcome. edited by McB on 24/04/2013

How about Ask parents from last year or your teacher, they may be able to assist. Ask for an email to be sent out. Maybe someone at St Mary' s would have one to sell. Looks as if some children made theirs today as we bumped into one child today in The Park Regis Hotel who was wearing hers as she said she had just made her communion. Good Luck

Heard on the radio last week his offices will be relocating to JLT ( I believe) in the near future. I would suggest firstly he needs a complete medical check up as he may be deficient in something that is impacting his memory. Unless you know he actually has ADD. A good Doctor should also be able to diagnose depression and organise necessary treatment which may be in the form of exercise and social activities. Hello all. This is a question for my SO who I suppose has always had symptoms but his inability to focus and his extreme forgetfulness at work especially is causing him depression and its taken a major blow to his self esteem. He has always had issues with remembering things like meeting with a friend or picking up things at the supermarket but recently it has started affecting his job and even routine tasks like coordination at work, sending emails, etc. At first I thought maybe he is being lazy but I saw it first hand and I think it is having very dire consequences. He stopped smoking around the same time all of this started and I'm not sure if it has anything to do with how he is performing now. He is a very happy go lucky, driven person and always been competitive and dedicated to what he is doing so its very sad to see him struggling like this. He himself has said that maybe there is something wrong with him and wants to quit his job. What kind of doctor should he be seeing? Will it be covered by insurance? What are the side effects if he goes on medication? What can his friends/family do to help him or make things easier? Sorry for all the questions, I've never had any experience with this type of thing before and thought I'd come on here and ask for advice. Tia. edited by i_am_hungree on 03/04/2013

Depends on what age the child is. Bored was not a word in our vocabulary when growing up. Teach children to appreciate quiet time and reflect or maybe send them out to play with friends , read a book , give them a job to do around the home, clean shoes anything. It is not necessarily wise to always have children in organised activities for this reason, expectations may become too high. What do you do when your child sys he/she is bored? I get to hear this very often. And I am running out of ideas......:(

Most likely to be jetlag, depending on where you came from. A few hours time difference can take from a few days to 2 weeks to recover. Hi, I came to Dubai 5 days ago, and I just cannot fell asleep. In my home I was sleeping like 10-12 hours per day, and just last night I have slept 4 hours. I am exhausted, tired and battery low :( I don´t suffer from any kind of depression or mental disorder (that I am aware of :)) I might be a little stressed because I have change an environment, but I have lived abroad a lot, so it has never been a problem for me before. And might be the bed, but at the moment, I can´t change it, so I need some good pills, without seeing a doctor, because I have a job interview, and I need to be fresh and relaxed. Thank you

Yes you were deprived ! It may depend on what part of Ireland you came from. Forget the tinned stuff ! Boiled Corned Beef ( Cured Beef ) is known in Ireland to be served with vegetables such as cabbage , carrots and Potato either mashed or boiled potato and with or without skins depending on time of year if your eating the potato skin( same idea as Boiled BaXon) The reference from another poster to spices in the cooking of Beef. This type of spiced beef is available generally at Christmas where some families would have spiced beef along with other meats over the Christmas period. OMG, where have I been, i am irish and never once in my lifetime have i had corned beef and cabbage!!!! BXXon and cabbage ,yes, but corned beef and cabbage ,never! I must have been deprived as a child! :) edited by suzieirl on 12/03/2013 edited by McB on 12/03/2013

You are best to have pest control have a look . If you bought it here if not too old take it back to the shop or ask their advice, it may need to be treated and they may have the system to do it. Unfortunately I had to throw out a lovely piece of large furniture some years ago here because of something eating into it( not termites) had it checked by pest control and also got terrible customer service from where the furniture had been purchased. A number I used for pest control for termites some years ago is 04 268 7600 . In addition look up the Internet edited by McB on 01/02/2013

This was the case with my daughter course , studying no time to work part time as too much research and learning to be done and thankfully paid off with an very good degree and internships in the summers and even then struggled to get paid work as so many companies want them to do unpaid intern ships. after graduating. I have to disagree with you on the comment most students have a part time work in London. Unfortunately that is not the case and many will not be given work because they are students . Companies have so many applying for jobs in London for very few positions. Depending on what student course they are taking may vary the amount of time they have to work a part time job. and have time to research and study to get a good result. The current market is a very different place and the past number of years is such a different environment in London. to 3 years ago. Oh..:) I think 500 a month is enough. I would rather give them less and see how they manage on it first and then increase if the reasons for it are valid. If your son/daughter decided that they cannot live on the given allowance, maybe they can then find a little part time jobs to top it up ( most students work part time in London) I agree with you to a certain extent. However, I was not talking about positions relevant to the courses students take (not sure if that is what you mean) . There are lots of restaurants and hotels etc in London who constantly look for part time workers. It is when students finish studies and then start looking for jobs, when it becomes extremely difficult. Companies prefer experience over a degree nowadays. What I do agree with you is that not all courses and universities are flexible enough in order to allow students to work part time. I know that some more prestigious universities do not allow students to work at all. edited by McB on 31/01/2013 edited by McB on 31/01/2013

The University where my son studies recommends £220 per week whereas some of my friends who have children there find it outrageous and the average they recommend is 500, which should be enough for all expenses apart from the accommodation which we pay separately. I didn't want to hijack the pocket money thread and hence my thread appeared.;-) If £220 excludes rent and study costs than I think this is more than enough for a student to live on. £500 a week would equal to about £36000 wage ( with all the tax taken into account). Most students do not earn that kind of money straight after finishing uni and they have to pay rent themselves, so I believe this would teach them nothing about how to live in a real life. No, no, we are talking about £500 per month. Oh..:) I think 500 a month is enough. I would rather give them less and see how they manage on it first and then increase if the reasons for it are valid. If this is the first year you child is studying in London it can be more expensive until they learn where to shop and what cheaper meals they can cook unless they are in student accommodation with a hot meal or two a day. 150 sterling a week or more if no meals provided the cost is probably higher a year on from when my daughter was in student life.

This is good advice and also Vit B12 is another test worth having to eliminate possible deficiencies.that would impact this . Before worrying too much check your vitamin D levels ASAP. What you are saying are symptoms of deficiency and i have seen a doctor for the exact same reason a week ago.

Balcony should be great and if in the direct sun for too long in the high heat of the day in a few months just add shade. Wash off dust when needed maybe once a week. Unless the children are badly behaved or very bad examples for your children, why not let them play together but you would need to teach him not to walk into your home uninvited as this he may not learn in his own home. A little bit of kindness and friendship will go along way and will never be forgotten. It takes a village/ society to raise people in a community not just one owns parents ( something in modern life we appear to forget at times) . Good luck what ever you decide. edited by McB on 26/01/2013

You will find children ( depending on their ages ) playing in the parks as the streets not as safe due to traffic unless you may live in a cul de sac. Children on skate boards can be risky for drivers and my son was one of the first to do this in the early years of A R but then there were less people living here as it was a much smaller community. We could do with a proper skateboard and roller skate and bike park for children and teenagers so parents know they are safe and drivers do not have to worry about someone coming from nowhere and risk of an accident. There are plenty of children in A R although over the years the age range alters as people move in and out. Best if you let people know her what age your child is and if M or F and area your considering and maybe then it would be a way to start connecting. Remember ease of access to school may impact your decision. Good luck .Anyone one else out there who lives in the Ranches and sees very few kids playing outside in the street? I've seen various posts talking about how child-friendly it is, with the streets full of kids on their bikes and scooters, and This is one of the main reasons we chose to live in the Ranches. We have been very disappointed and DD is bored and lonely. In our community you see a few kids going past occasionally but blink and they' ve moved on. Go to one of the parks and you might find some, might not. And they tend to be family groups or groups of close friends it seems. Very hard for my Dd to track any down that are willing to play. Strangely there are lots of kids and we know quite a few of them, but they are rarely out. When DD knocks on their doors they are also always out elsewhere, doing activities, homework or otherwise engaged. In our compound in the Uk all the kids would play out together, boys and girls, all ages, and we wanted to replicate that in Dubai. Yes they all had homework and activities, but in between times there were ready-made friends on our doorstep for them to play with. Anyone else find the same? Or have we been really unlucky? Any community in the Ranches better? Know people in Alvorada where there are lots of kids out and about. Or would a smaller compound with a central area suit our needs better? That way we can see if kids are playing outside. Trying to decide if it would be worth moving as Dd getting bored and I'm under lots of pressure to find playmates! edited by McB on 24/01/2013 edited by McB on 24/01/2013 edited by McB on 24/01/2013

The girl who works for me has a friend who she worked with for over 1 year with an arab family will be looking for work when she finishes her contaract this month. I do not know her but if interested give me a call and I can pass on your number. Ii think she will need to go home to the philippenes before restarting work. My number is 050 640 3513 Good luck Hello, I have been looking for a full-time maid over the last month and still I haven't found a serious, reliable candidate. Most of the ones that I contacted where supposed to come to my home for an interview and didn't show up or call to let me know they weren't coming. It's frustrating how irresponsible and unprofessional these women are. The two maids that did come to meet me and my family told us they really wanted the job and when they were supposed to start, once again they did not show or call. Any suggestions? Is this happening to anyone else? Thanks.

I smilled when I read this. I asked the same question in a store in Queens, New York in 1987. Where would I find cornflour ? I had to explain what I wanted to cook for so the person could figure out it was called corn starch in US. Lucky today there are computers and systems with forums that can assist and so much easier in today's world. I know is silly...will I find cornstarch in C4 or Spinneys? If yes...where exactly, which product isle? edited by McB on 24/11/2012

This is good news and a reminder one cannot leave stuff out that could be seen as rubbish. Many people leave things near rubbish bins and it appears accepted that it has been thrown out. We had a bike taken in error 7 years ago and thankfully got it back when the family spotted the maid had picked up the wrong bike and rode it home from the park.
