I am having an elective c-section and would not have it any other way. This is not because I'm afraid of natural child birth but due to more than a few health problems leading to this decision. Initially I chose a gyni who was very pro natural birth because I was very afraid of being pushed into a c-section (I badly wanted a natural delivery) but as the pregnancy progressed I had to get my head round the fact that c-section was the way forward for me. If I were healthy and didnt have any of the problems I currently do I would love to have a natural delivery but its just not possible so over the last few weeks I've tried to make myself feel better with the pro's of a c-section. 1. I'm aware its a major surgery but unpredictable scenarios such as baby getting stuck etc will not apply to me. I was delivered via forceps and other things and came out badly bruised and blue. I would hate for that to happen to DS. 2. DH has just changed jobs and doesnt have the luxury of taking time off when we need him to so this way he has already scheduled off his leave. 3. My parents have been able to seen to what they need to and be here right in time for the delivery 4. Emotionally knowing when my baby is coming has given me the strength to get through these last 2 months no matter how difficult 5. C-section after pain doesnt have a huge bearing with me because even if I cant hold baby straight away due to any pain I'll have DH with me as well as my parents and my best friend so I wont be doing it all alone Again, I would never have chosen a c-section for the sake of it and it took me a long time to come to terms with the idea that I had to have one but I know its the right decision for me and thats what is the important thing. People will be ignorant to say to you 'I cant understand WHY on earth you'd want your stomach cut open' well the answer is simple 'Because you have no idea of my personal situation' so ignore negative comments and make the decision based on what is right for you and your baby. Your right at the end of the day its whats right for you and bubs. I watched a brilliant video yesterday funnily enough on a natural c-section in the uk (see link) and really wished my experience had been more like this. Just thought you would like to see it for some tips on making it the best experience for you. http://www.studentmidwife.net/fob/the-natural-caesarean-a-woman-centred-technique.67404/

A c-section certainly isn't an easy option. I had a natural birth followed by a c-section and then a natural birth. Hands down I felt the recovery after a natural far easier. It really suprised me how sore I actually was from the section and how much I was't able to do in comparison to feeling relatively pain free the other times. I had my section in al ain so not sure how it compares to the practise in dubai but after the operation, baby was held up to me briefly and that was the last time I saw him for 2 hours while I was in recovery. It was horrific and I only got him back after demanding from my dh. A friend of mine had to wait 6 hours! Luckily I had no trouble bonding in fact it probably made us more so as I was just so desperate to hold him and have him with me. Look into both options so you are fully informed what they both entail. As another poster has said its the fear of the inknown that is the scary part. Hilsbils what you wrote is very much the same thoughts I have regarding birth, lovely post x edited by minxy on 14/06/2012

Maybe post this question in the pregnancy, babies section as I think there are a few doulas that post on there that could advise you. Im moving back to the uk next year to hopefully get into midwifery. Your right there is nothing you can do from here but if you do ever think of it as a career in the future then your work as a doula would really help towards your application.

When dd was about 3 or 4 she went through a phase of telling fibs. This one time I saw her do something naughty and then she lied about it not knowing I had saw her. So I told her that when she lies a red dot appears on the middle of her forehead and it was flashing because she must of been lying to me. Well she believed me straightaway and burst into tears and admitted what she had done. Worked for years after. Remember one time her covering her head with her hand as she was telling me a fib!

Your right dibdab it isn't an easy profession to get in to. I've just started an access to midwifery course and I realise to get ahead I need as much experience as possible. Not an easy thing to do being over here with 3 children but we're just going to have to find a way round it. Thanks so much for your advice and really hope your sister gets in this time she sounds like she has worked really hard towards it. Thanks woody I've sent off emails to a few names I've found but not heard anything back and not really getting anywhere by phone. Might just be easier to pop round to the different hospitals and try to speak to someone directly. If anyone else has any advice I would really appreciate it. Tia

Hi, can I ask for those that have previously got the visa did you have to visit the saudi embassy at all? I've been a few times as my parents live there. I was living in al ain at the time though and I had to go to the embassy in abu dhabi. Involved lots of faffing around. Hoping to go in april. edited by minxy on 03/01/2012

Hi. I have quite a few books that I've been collecting. Hoping to start midwife training when we move back to the uk in 2014. Starting early! Becoming a midwife in the 21st century is good and I think is used as part of the coursework. A great one is one born every minute (from the tv programme) has different midwive tales. More light hearted but will certainly get her excited for her new career. Well done to your sister, its not an easy course to get on.

Chicken or beef fajitas sometimes both, salsa, cheese, guacamole and sour cream. Im a fan of a few dishes out and then everyone serves themselves. Also I usually do a chilli or curry with rice and of course lasagne or a spag bol with garlic bread.

You could buy packs of shortbread biscuits, take say 4 out and put them in a small bag (daiso sell them) and tie with ribbon. Or just go to patchi and buy a box of chocolates, come in a nice box and ribbon. My dh loves them and costs about 70-80dhs.

It will probably be a disaster but im hoping it will become a new tradition. Can't wait to hear others to see if I can nick some ideas ;)

Hi Betti, My ds turned 3 in september and missed the cut off so won't be starting fs1 until next sept. To be honest im not in any rush for him to start a nursery as I have a dd 2yrs at home as well so it makes no difference. Plus its quite a big expense. We've been to the expat mcc before and found the same, it was mainly me just running after the 2 of them and no interacting with anyone else. He doesn't really have a problem playing with others more a lack of anyone to play with his own age and finding activites that don't cost an arm and a leg. Give me a shout if you fancy getting together one time for a playdate.

Hi worldgirl, my sis in law and partner are arriving on the same flight I think, from manchester? I checked on the doha airport guide for departures and it looks like the connecting flight has been delayed also. It was due to leave at 8:30pm doha time. Fingers crossed its waiting for our flight. Apparently they will sometimes delay if there is a large number of passengers who are connecting. Otherewise the next flight with QR is 11:59pm....yawn! edited by minxy on 10/11/2011

I wouldn't worry too much I had a vbac with dd just shy of 13 months after having ds by cs. I was told to wait a year before conceiving again after c-section but obviously didn't quite work out that way! I saw the same obygn for both births and he was happy for me to go for a vbac and wasn't overly concerned about the time frame but did keep an eye on the scar during pregnancy for tearing.

Been here since february and we all settled in really quickly with regards to house, school etc. But belonging not so much yet. Im trying though, have people to chat to at school but only 1 or 2 out of it. Missing my girlie mates and putting the world to rights over a bottle of wine. Oh and not glam in the slightest, far too much effort getting the kids ready in the morning never mind me!

Thanks everyone for your advice. Honestly I know I must sound like a proper ditz! I actually thought I'd done something wrong with the cake mix last time as it did pretty much fall apart. I thought it might have been because I had to leave it to cool overnight. Or so I was told. Did end up baking one from scratch in the end but thought the readymix would be easier. Ah well I think I'll save the pack for cupcakes at some point and just make a regular one.

Really, what's so complicated? It's only a mix cake. Two minutes to mix, pop into the oven. While it's cooking, make the frosting. Let the cake cool, then put it together. There's no need to spread it across several days! Lol..you'd think. But honestly made my dd's cake in may and it kept falling apart on me. Hadn't let it cool enough, ended up making about 4! Says alot about my baking skills and impatientness! Someone told me at the time I should spread it across a few days.

My dd is in year 3 so possibly a little oldler than yours but we get homework sunday-wednesday, no weekends. There is maths, spellings and reading. She is really not in the mood when she gets in from school and just wants to play or watch tv. I gave up on the homework at that point because she would just mess about and wasn't able to concentrate. So after she's eaten about 6pm she does her math questions, after her bath/shower her reading book. In the car on the way to school we do the spellings. You just have to try to memorise them or I get dd to read them and cover them up. I found it hard to get her to stay interested in all 3 so it worked better to split it up. hth

Being a mum is the best job in the world, but it's also very hard work. If you are at home all day, it's tough. If you are out all day, it is also tough having to make up for the time that you weren't there. If you work, you feel guilty because you work. If you don't work, you feel like you are losing your work skills or that you are not doing enough with your LO etc. At the end of the day you have to do what works for you and your family. Nobody else has the right to criticise your decision, nobody knows why you have made it, and absolutely nobody has the right to make you feel guilty about it. Your LO loves you more than anyone else in the world, no matter what your decision is. Well said, I couldn't agree more.
