I'd go for three opinions to be honest. Dentists in Dubai have for years now exploited patients by doing root canals at every opportunity possible. If you do a search you will find this point has been discussed on EW before. Good luck in finding a reliable dentist and don't do it.

Do you have the chance to join a club, workshop, artclasses that make you (per force depending on activity) spend a certain time with others and give you the opportunity to "bond" over time rather than just "passing by each other like ships in the night"? Met and chatted with a young lady who was new to Dubai, most desperately lonely when husband was at work; I suggested art classes, made the contact for her - she never looked back and developed a great network of (all types of) friends. edited by crystalsindubai on 17/05/2011 I completely agree with you :)

I have made fantastic friends through shared activities with a proper purpose such as book clubs and cooking classes. At least when you attend these conversations start of with a purpose and cut past the small talk.

SW the Gulf News is not even allowed in our house, it is a paper well known for it's poor content ;) Like I said on another thread, carry on spamming because that is what you are doing on every thread school related. You sometimes make good points, but more often than not you spew sweeping statements and it is getting a tad tedious.

The thing with statistics is that people throw figures left right and center and all of a sudden something that some idiot quoted becomes gospel. I agree that we all share our experiences to contribute to discussion, but some posters are h e l l b e n d to create a terrible picture of Dubai which is not right. I understand that their personal disappointments feed their smear campaigns, but in all honesty they are increasingly overstepping boundaries and lash out at new posters looking to gain deeper insight, and older posters who dare to take a different stance. Yes there are appalling schools in Dubai. There are also excellent ones. The dyslexia thread is a point in case. Some just lash out at the first change of opening anything school related and others share alternatives and possibilities. I certainly learned from reading that thread and was surprised about some of the schools mentioned. There is hope ;) And that's all for now folks :D

I bought the same as salsB 2 years ago for about 90dhs and it has survived many travels. I looks similar to this http://www.chinawholesalegift.com/pic/Bag-Gifts/Traveling-Bag/WHEELED-TROLLEY-BAG-21393675108.jpg On the other hand we bought 2 American Tourister hard suitcases that looks exactly like Samsonite suitcases. The salesman said it was made in the same factory. Rubbish. Each broke after one flight. The above were all bought from C4.

I did say MOST. My kids have been to 3 Dubai schools and all of them were just a poor version of a UK state school. I’m going on my experience of Dubai schools maybe your children had a better experience. edited by tally-ho on 16/05/2011 I wish people would stop making these sweeping statements based purely on their own experiences of 1, 2 or 3 schools. The Dubai school scene is not nearly as dire as posters make it out to be. Nor are all children high performers and university material.

I would call in a vet as it could be more complex than merely killing off of the snakes. Some snake species use the same den or nest site for breeding for many years and it is virtually impossible to interfere with nature. Good luck in getting rid of this slithery problem. Grr.

I only use pay as you go and after switching off the 3G and installing the widget, my phone hardly uses credit or battery power. These are the steps I followed to switch off the 3G -Press arrow up to access the main menu. -Press Settings. -Press Wireless controls. -Press Mobile networks. -Press Use only 2G networks to activate or deactivate the function. -When the box next to the menu item is ticked (V), the function is deactivated. - Press Exit -Press the Home key to return to stand-by mode.

I switched off the 3G as it ran a massive bill and emptied the battery within 24 hours. Like you I wasn't sure whether I did everything I should have to plug the money/battery drain. I then downloaded a widget which allows you to switch on/off 3G internet: http://www.appbrain.com/app/apn-on-off-widget/net.maicas.android.apnoo All of a sudden the battery lasts a few days rather than just one day too. Petrified of big bills I now use wi-fi only and never switch the widget on for 3G. I recall downloading the widget and it "sat" on the phone a few days. I later realised I still had to import/drag it to another screen for it to be effective. Hope this helps a little. I have a different Samsung to you though.

Plastic crates from C4 or Ace come in quite handy for these. We have two crates for each kid. One contains Birth to middle Primary and the other last two years primary to end secondary. I put the best of every year's work in a good old Spinneys bag, label and seal it and put it away in the crate. I scan some of the art/schoolwork before I pack it away so that there is electronic back-up in case of god forbid fire/earthquake or similar. Every year on their birthdays, I buy a newspaper and drop that in the container too. Hopefully they will appreciate my efforts. I plan to buy a nice wooden chests as 21st pressies for each and will do away with the plastic crates.

so lemme get this straight...so far this morning us EW'ers who use the forum to ask what might be construed as a stupid question by some of us more enlightened folk have been called: stupid lazy technologically impaired haveheightened self importance issues and are time wasters. care to add a few more of your insights ladies? Don't hold back now girls...really let us know what you think of us all ;) hehe - but there's proper questions and the proper daft ones like "what should I have for tea?" I also don't believe that anyone born after 1975 can be so technologically impaired as to not know about Google. I beg to differ. "What should I have for tea" is an excellent conversation starter and not a daft question. Talking about what people are having for tea can be revealing and enlightening, from the different English terms for types of veggies and dishes among the US, UK and Oz to getting an insight into what people actually eat nowadays. I have learned to widen my scope of what I cook at home due to these type of threads.

I think it's down to a combination of laziness and thinking that their problem/issue is oh-so-different from everyone else's... same reason people don't use the EW search function that much Incorrect. http://www.expatwoman.com/abudhabi/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=147045

OP you should rather worry about the worrisome medical advice that is provided by posters on forums rather than the questions asked ;) I think it is conversation making and the simple fact that sometimes there is more to an answer than what is provided trhough googling. E.g. What is the contact details of the XXXX Embassy please? Google might give you an answer, but it might not tell you that the embassy relocated a year ago/is closed due to XXXXX or that the visa forms and requirements on the net is outdated etc etc. People are diverse and I know many who just don't think ito google but who do think ito EW :) Googling is impersonal, there is no human contact. EW is more personal, a telephone call even more so, but frustrating due to language/incompetence. Hugs to you Edna. I understand your question and frustration, but give these posters a break.

Researching on EW? Are you a journalist or what/who are you doing the research for? I have seen many manis/pedis and a few massages being performed on tweens but in 12 years not once did i witness waxing or threading. These treatments normally take place in a private room meaning that I did not pay particular attention to this phenomena either. I have once or twice overheard receptionists advising someone telephonically that they do not perform waxing on such young skin.

The UAE has NEVER offered free medical treatment for expats. Where do you get this information from? We had health cards in the early 2000's and only paid for medication and a small fee for consultation. Less than AED50 actually. Many treatments were completely free. Hurry quickly jump down my throat.. Sheez A long term Dubai resident is the one who informed me of this a while back. Not my fault I was given mis-information. And truly no further need to be rude.. Anyway, if you had to pay even a little for it, it was not free. I was kind of thinking that.. But decided to leave it alone..:) Uhm see my response. The fee was admin, not medical :)

That is also true, but the fees payable was seen as admin fee, not medical costs. Who knows what the situation was before we arrived in the UAE by the late 90's? It could be that all was free then? I responded because the "never" was in Caps, making quite a strong point from bornconfused side. I did not intend to fly down anyone's throat. We all have different ways of communicating :)

Yes they are. They have no choice but to go. My point is we worry about one illness, there are many other serious diseases and we should be privately covered for all. SM put is quite succinctly below. Edit: In response to Izzy <em>edited by MissUnderstood on 03/05/2011</em>

We can't have it both ways. If we want to live/work somewhere where we don't contribute to social welfare, we shouldn't expect to receive it. We already don't contribute to the upkeep of parks/roads/refuse collection/ etc (and don't mention Salik, you don't [i'>have[/i'> to travel on SZR ;) ) We all pay [b'>all the time[/b'>. I have recently found out that medications here are 33% more expensive than in Saudi due to a "levy" here. Ditto animal medications. These are only 2 examples of many. That is indeed true and a different take on the same issue :\:

Plus those who say it's covered by insurance - think again, most insurance companies class cancer as a pre-existing condition and don't cover it! Chocs, I beg to differ. We are well informed, intelligent, professional people who scrutinized our options before selecting our policy. We all know that you get what you pay for with regard to policies. I would think cancer and heart disease being top causes of death plays a role in selecting a policy,. We certainly don't select a policy only for the average infection.

What I can t believe is that no-one is concerned about this None of us know what is around the corner and some health insurance companies will only cover chemo for a certain period of time - obviously it is just me family and friends who have these concerns Oh well there by the grace of God ........ Sorry, I'm not concerned. We pay over the odds for insurance out here and under the 'cancer' section, the rebates -- according to the provider -- have an estimate in the vicinity of many many thousands of pounds. We would not have chosen our health insurance provider without those guarantees, to be honest. I do understand that there are people on the low end of the 'care' scale who will be affected by this, but I would imagine they would experience the same desperation and competition for cancer care in their home countries as well. Just because they're in UAE shouldn't mean they are suddenly bumped up into a high healthcare bracket. This is very much a 'user pays' society, after all. And don't get me started on the US and its health 'care'. As far as I can see, the UAE is still streets ahead of them. ;) We choose our insurance amongst the same principles WM. I know an Indian specialist working at a UAE Private Hospital and when she needed Chemo she went back to India for her treatment. As for the US: Source: NY Times The federal government has told New York State health officials that chemotherapy, which had been covered for illegal immigrants under a government-financed program for emergency medical care, does not qualify for coverage. The decision sets the stage for a battle between the state and federal governments over how medical emergencies are defined. The change comes amid a fierce national debate on providing medical care to immigrants, with New York State officials and critics saying this latest move is one more indication of the Bush administration’s efforts to exclude the uninsured from public health services. State officials in New York and other states have found themselves caught in the middle. The New York dispute, focusing on illegal immigrants with cancer — a marginal group of unknown size among the more than 500,000 people living in New York illegally — has become a flash point for health officials and advocates for immigrants in recent weeks. Under a limited provision of Medicaid, the national health program for the poor, the federal government permits emergency coverage for illegal immigrants and other noncitizens. But the Bush administration has been more closely scrutinizing and increasingly denying state claims for federal payment for some emergency services, Medicaid experts said.

Of course we are concerned, hence us having a very good private policy in place that includes chemotherapy treatment, diabetes etc. Read my previous posting again: . . . That is true for Europe due to the EU Law in Healthcare, public healthcare systems etc. We all know that the UAE is not a welfare state, we do not pay tax. Providing private healthcare to expatriates are one of the conditions of a labour card/visa. Edit to add - do you say any foreigner can rock up in these European countries for free chemo? <em>edited by MissUnderstood on 03/05/2011</em>
