*presses Repeat button* Lamali is happy with her life and wouldn't want to be a parent herself. That's all, move along, nothing to see here. Agreed. It's just hard not to say your piece sometimes. I'm done now though... Night night

We should all floss too. And in a perfect world we would but the fact is, it's not a perfect world. Would it be so terrible to make it less imperfect by giving people a break??

Absolutly! First time I read it, I thought, this is daft... He's really not telling me much I didn't already know! And I didn't see how the info I hadn't previously known could possibly help me quit. First time disn't work for me. Read it again out of desperation and paid a bit more attention and thought things through as I read. Haven't had a cigarette in almost 4 years and haven't ONCE felt a craving for one. And to this day, every so often it strikes me... I see someone having a cigarette and I think, it's SO cool that I don't have to do that anymore!

But she hasn't said that we (those with children) are unhappy with our lives. She's pointed out that some are and lets face it; she's right! There do exist some very unhappy mums out there who probably only ever had kids because not having children was never considered an option. This lady is obviously very in touch with her feelings and has done the responsible thing of not making herself miserable by having a child who would, in all likelihood, be seriously affected by the situation. I went through eight cycles of IVF and an enormous amount of heartache to have my DD and am devastated that I can't have another. Do I understand not wanting to be a mum? Not at ALL. Can't fathom how anyone could not want to be a mum. But I accept that some don't and that's ok. Really, the only thing here is lamali's terminology and although it can be taken as being offensive, the context shows quite clearly - I think - that she has nothing against people with children. She just can't understand why they'd want to do it. Just like I can't understand not wanting to. As for her reasons for not wanting to - not wanting to be a servant to someone else - that's how SHE feels. We may not see it that way (although, in fairness I often do feel I am a servant to a small tyrant!!! But I love it). Call me naive but I just can't help thinking that we'd all be better off if we gave others the benefit of the doubt and took a second to recognise that - particularly on a forum where we rely on the written word - meanings and intentions can and do get misconstrued and are not always expressed as well as they might be.

Has anyone tried "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr? I smoked about a pack a day for 21 years and I LOVED smoking. I heard so many smokers complain about how they hated how things smelled or how they couldn't get up the stairs/taste their food... etc... I had none of these problems. But I wanted to have a baby and refused to try until I'd been cig-free for at least 6 months. Tried patches, tablets, all sorts and nothing worked. I'd quit for a short time and then go back to it with a vengeance. Then someone suggested this book and I thought... pfffft... there's NO WAY reading a self help book is going to make me quit smoking. But it did. It's amazing. Terribly written but short and easy to read. Makes you realize that you actually DON'T need that cigarette. Amazing. Very grateful to him!! Best of luck muse!! That feeling of being liberated is truly fantastic!

Oh my, are we still at it with this topic? I have to say there are a great many posters here who are either very defensive or extremely easily offended. I didn't know. LOL... Now you do! So just resist the urge to illustrate that you are not beelzebub herself. You are clearly a sad, bitter, miserable woman with no love or joy in her heart as has been proven - right here on EW - beyond reason & fairness... Or was that last bit supposed to be "beyond reasonable doubt"??

jamhind, you generally don't have to worry about the paperwork. Most professional moving companies (whether they are moving companies or relocation companies) will handle the paperwork here in Dubai. In a nutshell: A relocation company will do everything a moving company will do but will ALSO help you with regards to settling in. So, they might help you find a home, schools for your kids, they ,might conduct an orientation of the city for you. There are all sorts of services they might provide. A moving company will do the move but not the housing, schools etc... Normally, a relocation company will subcontract the moving part to a moving company. At the same time ,a moving company may offer relocation services! Anyway, unless you want all the additional services, you should look for a plain and simple moving company. Any international moving company will have its standard partners in other countries. So, for example, you book the move with CompanyX in Oz. Company X will come to your house, pack your stuff, and get it out of Oz for you by boat or plane, whichever you need. They will ALSO have a moving company here in Dubai who they normally do business with and they will have that company collect your shipment on arrival, handle all the paperwork, deliver it to your home and unpack it, on their behalf. It is unusual when the moving company does not handle the paperwork and usually it's a matter of the mover asking them not to because the mover decides they'd rather save the money and do it themselves. Like I said, unusual, as most would MUCH rather pay the mover and have it all done for them!! As I said earlier though, you can always choose to book the move with a mover based here in Dubai if you would like that added plus of being able to get in their faces should you need to! But, if you go with a FIDI mover, you generally don't need to get in their faces. Also consider that the benefit of going with an Aussie mover is that the people who do the packing (the most critical controllable variable in the whole "getting my things to destination in one piece" equation) are the ones with whom you have booked the move. If you did decide to use a FIDI mover from Oz, they will normally also use a FIDI mover to do the end bit here in Dubai. And it is your right as the client to ask who they plan to use at destination and whether they are FIDI or not. You also have the right to specify who you want them to use at destination. Equally, if you book the move with a company here in Dubai, you can tell them who you want them to use in Oz. I would only advise doing that if you have good reason to use a particular company other than the one you're booking with. So for example, you book with a company here in Dubai but a friend in Oz tells you they have a good friend who has a small moving company and who will take good care of you because they're a friend so you want to use them. Otherwise, let the company you book with, pick the other company. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask... my email is mercedes dot king71 at gmail dot com

LOL.. Your DD sleeps from 8pm until 10:30 or 11am and you're complaining. What I would't have given!! <<Deep sigh>> However, envy aside, if doing stuff in the afternoon doesn't appeal or if you can't do the EW tots one, you can always start your own. You're right. You CAN'T be the only one. When I first came to Dubai it was mid summer when no-one is around and I still thought, there HAVE to be others out there just like me. So I posted notices in local supermarkets and stuff and sure enough, there were a few others. One, like me, was trying to start something up and now we're now a group of about 45 who all live in the same area. It's great. Give it a go.

Grace Removals in Oz are good. Did you specifically want to book the move with someone in Dubai? If so, may I ask why? It's not a bad idea because then if anything should go wrong (hopefully not!!!) then they are here where they can't avoid you and you can get right in their faces. But if I can make one suggestion, try to go with a company that is a member of FIDI (www.fidi.com) regardless of which country they are in. FIDI is the only international removals association in the world and they audit all their members fairly strictly (so chances are, the company you're using is better than most), plus, again, should anything go wrong and should you, for any reason, need someone in your corner because you are not getting an appropriate responce from the company you book with, FIDI could be of help. Best of luck with your move.

Zannie, I wasn't actually criticizing anyone for their opinion! And SueB & spongemonkey, I was absolutely fine with all the people who disagreed with me but did it without being rude and attacking me! Did you ever stop to think your position/advice may be considered far more carefully if you didn't put the receiver on the defensive?? What I take issue with is the way some people feel a need to be rude and nasty, as I said earlier, and with the way some choose to assume things and take things in the most negative light possible in order to be able to criticize and jump all over someone. Most of the points made are valid... yes drivers here are not the most considerate, yes many talk on the phone, yes, running in low light, bends in the roads, parker cars, clothing, earphones, etc, can make for a dangerous situation but none of these points apply to me. Again, I am not defending my actions as a good idea... or agreeing that they're an entirely bad idea. Just pointing out that assumptions ARE made, that they are negative and that they are used to fuel an attack on a person (in this case me, in many other cases, other posters). I'm sure at least some will enjoy having another go at me. I'm done. Or at least, I'll try very hard to resist the urge to see what else people come out with!

Wow. Talk about grabbing at an opportunity to be nasty and rude. Not to mention having no life! And making assumptions left right and centre, not least of which is my apparent skin condition! I don't have anything that simple that can be dealt with using sun-protection! It was a genuine question and if you think it to be a stupid one, so be it. Is that reason to be nasty about it? I've seen many questions on here that I consider less than intelligent. I don't jump all over the person for it! But DUH! This is Expatwoman. Of course some of you have to be nasty. To all of you - like GoodMorning, Bunnykins, Zengirl, Chocs01, breteuil - who gave a straightforward response minus the snide judgement calls, thank you. I can't believe I'm going to bother doing this but I feel a need to respond to individual comments because their ignorance is beyond me. But first, just to clarify, Bunnykins, Where I run is actually a straight road and you'd be hard pressed to find a bend that would hide a jogger. Although yes, I do understand your point. Noddy2, sorry but reversing the situation is hardly a logical illustration!! Roxan51, that may be the case in the Ranches but there is plenty of room where I'm running. Zannie, you can't get any closer to the sidewalk than where I run and it's not an illusion that exists only in my head! Sue62, I'm being accused of asking a stupid question and you respond by asking why I'm living here if I have to avoid the sun? Seriously? That sounds like a reasonable question to you? You can't fathom that there may be a plethora of reasons why a person doesn't change the country in which they live due to a need to avoid the sun??? Granted the millions I have stacked away would allow me to live wherever I please but I choose to live here in the sun despite my condition for no other reason that to antagonize others. And, we may not be talking about cyclists but I fail to see how they are any different from a jogger if you're talking about the unfairness to the poor driver who might hit them!! Cyclists take up more space! I would have thought you would consider them doubly selfish! NIP, the pathway is not perfectly good which is why I don't run on it because I don't have bad knees and don't want them. Louisedvs, accidents are rife because people are terrible drivers and talk on the phone while driving and *I'm* the one in the wrong because if one of those idiots who insists on talking on the phone while driving badly hits me, the "poor sole" will have to pay blood money and/or go to jail??? Goldeelocks, thank you. I was coming from the same place as you when I asked the question. It's fairly normal to run and cycle in the road in many places I've lived. Hence my being confused about these people's motives for telling me to get off the road. Granted, the roads, and drivers, here are not as safe as in many western countries but that's my problem. I'm not saying my safety doesn't matter. I'm just saying it's no one's business but mine and I don't need complete strangers telling me off for my own safety. I HAVE a mother thank you very much! That said, considering how afraid you all are of hitting me, I may well find somewhere else to run because that DOES scare me!!! All that said, I take offense to being cast as a deeply selfish imbecile because of what bad drivers might do when I am running on a wide open road that has little traffic on it AND a 40km speed limit. If anyone WERE to hit a jogger or cyclist on that road, they deserve to go to jail because they should never have been behind the wheel of a car in the first place!

Sadly, there are hundreds of women out there win the same boat and little that can be done about it. The only people I know who work from home, myself included, do so by working for a previous employer or for previous clients. Sorry I don't have anything more constructive to say. But maybe someone out there knows of someone who could use some data entry done. Good luck.

Ear plugs are a marvelous invention! And yes, my ears used to hurt afterwards too but not anymore. I guess your ears get used to them. I'm embarrassed to admit that they actually got quite painful but I stuck with it!! Well, don't see what DH can do to stop snoring so didn't really have a choice. He's skinny, he doesn't drink, he doesn't have sleep apnea. And like many here, my sleep is seriously precious to me. So I could either lie there going not-so-quietly insane, or I could use earplugs. Now I love them. Good luck!!

Aside from TCG and London-Paris - both of which I've received lots of useful advice on - I've recently been told to check out Blossom and Le Jardin Enchante. For those who never saw the previous thread, I'm a nervous mum looking for a very nurturing francophone or bilingual nursery for my 2y3m old. Here are my staples: MOUJADARA I make this in the pressure cooker so I'm guessing you'd have to add 1 more cup stock if not using a pressure cooker. Not a big deal if you don't end up with enough liquid as you can always add a bit when you add the rice if need be. 1 large onion, roughly chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 1 cup small black lentils, washed well 1/2 cup short or medium grain rice 6 cups beef (or veg) stock Salt to taste fry onion till golden Add 1 cup lentils Stir 1 - 2 minutes on medium Add stock Bring to pressure and cook 8 minutes Quick release then drain lentils reserving liquid Add rice and add back 1 1/4 cup liquid and any salt you want to add and cook normally until rice is done. Sauce 1 large onion 1 tbsp olive oil 1/2 cup tomato paste 1 cup beef (or veg) stock 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tbsp white vinegar Dash hot pepper (optional) Fry onion Add tomato paste and fry stirring, 1 min Add stock, cumin, white vinegar, hot pepper and simmer Sauce should be fairly thick Boil elbow macaroni Garnish: Fry 1 large chopped onion till quite dark then drain on paper towel To serve: Make a mound of the lentil and rice mixture on a serving dish. Top with macaroni Add a thin layer of sauce on top of macaroni (this is just for presentation. The rest of the sauce is served in a bowl for people to add as they like) Sprinkle fried onion on top Serve with a finely chopped salad of lettuce, tom, cucumber with a very basic dressing made of olive oil, salt and white vinegar. (should be quite tangy) Of course, you don't have to bother with the presentation. I normally serve the lentils and rice in a big bowl with the pasta in another and the sauce in another and I don't bother with the fried onions. But I make LOTS of the salad! ************************* Gratin De Courgettes 1 tablespoon butter 1 large onion – chopped (not too fine) 5 large zucchinis - cubed into bite size pieces 1 cup beef stock Béchamel Flour Butter Milk Parmesan Ementhal Fry the onion in butter. When onion is slightly golden add courgettes with a pinch of salt and simmer (covered) on very low heat until courgettes are beginning to become tender. Add 1 cup beef stock. Don’t forget to stir fairly often so courgettes don’t burn. Add pepper to taste and continue to simmer till tender but don't let them go too soft Drain courgettes and reserve liquid Make béchamel with half milk and half liquid from courgettes. Add parmesan and ementhal to the béchamel You don't want your béchamel to be too thin but not too thick either. When the dish is done, it should still be fairly sloppy when served. Place courgettes in an oven proof dish and carefully mix in the béchamel Cover with some more parmesan and place under the grill till the cheese browns a little ************************* SPANAKOPITA Phyllo 1 cup Feta cheese 1 cup Labneh (or ricotta) 1kg chopped spinach 6 Green onions ¼ - ½ teaspoon nutmeg 4 eggs Cook spinach Cool in cold water then drain well and chop if not already chopped. Squeeze out as much water as possible. Roughly chop green onions and fry until tender In a bowl, break up feta. Add labneh, spinach, green onions, eggs and a dash of nutmeg Layer 5 layers of phyllo brushed with butter in a dish with edges of phyllo hanging over side Put mixture in dish and fold phillo over the top. If it doesn't fold all the way over the top then add more phyllo on top to cover. *************** Anyone else got something to share?? I'm getting hungry! ;-)

I'll start by saying that I'm not trying to ruffle any feather in any way shape or form but just thought I'd throw a different opinion into the mix. I'm part of an odd couple too... And I LOVE it! Absolutely people should look past the surface. But don't give the surface a miss altogether! Notice it. Appreciate it. I think it's so cool to look at the differences and find out more about them... Find out how people from different walks of life came together and what their stories are.
