Pretty sure Hep B can be spread through body secretions. I would not want this lady anywhere near my children, if I could help it. Also, even if you can get her here, by some method, she will never pass the medical and you will just have to be sent home. Even if she gets here and runs away before the medical, do you want to be responsible for bring her here knowing she is infected?

Some people say you can apply 5 years after the date of marriage, others say 3 years after the first baby, others say 5 years after you've been on the family book. Which is true? Is it correct to say you cannot get the nationality if you're not on the family book? Would appreciate all your info on this, not for myself, for a friend :) TIA Hi! I have been told that it is after being in the nationality booklet for 5 years. It is correct to say that you cannot get the nationality if you're not in the family book. Agree. 5 years after being entered into the family book. I am in the process of this myself right now.

We are planning our summer vacation, and came across this site. It is based in New Zealand, but has villas in Bali, Seychelles, Thailand, etc. I have been researching, and have only found a couple of mentions of anyone using the site for booking via Tripadvisor, but no actual reviews of the company. Anyone with experience with them please? I really like the villas they offer, but not sure if they are legit. TIA

also you will need to do the POLO office papers, if not already done. Today is Thursday and lunchtime now. Not enough time to get things sorted....so she might be stuck here until after the weekend. Then you have flight availablitlity....etc Perhaps there's an emergency on call person in the POLO office. Now that would be almost funny. Why? Because they have never answered their phone in over 5 years, any time of the day........perhaps they do emergency weekend only. They actually did answer the emergency number when I called a few months ago for my maid, whose father passed Thurs afternoon. Tthe answer was no way to finish anything until sunday when they reopen. However, we sent her home the next day, and I completed half the paperwork on my own here and shipped it to her, then she finished it in manila.

There are many parking lots across the street from the corniche. I think they are all now controlled by mawaqif, so when you park, then you will have to find the nearest blue "mawaqif" box and purchase a parking ticket. It is usually 2-3 dhs/hour, and I think in that area, it is a max of 2 hours.

I would definately report the lady for flipping the finger, especially if she did it in front of the security. Flipping the bird is a HUGE no no over here.

My friend had her kids in the MBZ campus, but moved them this year. She hated the school. One child didn't have a math teacher for half of the year, and couldn't even pass her math test for the new school since she hadn't covered the required material the previous year. Another child didn't have an english teacher for half the year, and as a consequence became very far behind as well. She felt the school was unorganized, and far below standard for teaching. She moved her children to Glenelg, and is much happier with their progress.

Does she have her EOC? Without that document she will never be allowed to leave Manila. I thought the rules for the philippines now was that a maid coming to work for a new sponsor, that they had to come through an agency and via agency they were to be sent through some classes. We brought one in from philippines a couple months ago, and they had to have all of the forms from us plus the form from the agency before they would issue her the EOC to board the plane. The agency in the philippines put her through a couple of classes that were required, but were useless. They taught them how to count to 10 in arabic, and a few other things, but nothing extraordinary.

http://english.readsrilanka.com/2012/01/20/government-will-protect-free-health-care-and-free-education-basil/ Just read the above article talking about healthcare and university education being free in sri lanka. It is from last month, so recent. Another article I found from 2005 was a politician stating that sri lanka is the only country in the world to have totally free healthcare.

So, 1 for Abshar and 1 for Tehran... guess that means I need to try both:) How do they compare to Sadaf, which is the only Iranian restaurant we have really tried here in UAE. We used to eat at one in DC all the time back in the day.

When my oldest daughter was about 10 months old, there was a huge tornado that went through a city a few hours from my home. There were all kinds of horrible stories about people missing, etc. One story was about a baby, same age as my daughter, who had been ripped from her mother's arms by the tornado and was missing. Anyway, I had a very vivid dream...I didn't realize it was a dream at the time, but it was a newscast telling that the child had been discovered alive in a tree. Later in the day my mother was talking about this poor woman and missing child, and I told her "no, didn't you see the news that the baby was found in a tree". She said it didn't happen, so I'm thinking either I am crazy or my mom just didn't see the newscast. Anyway, the child was actually found the next day at the base of a tree under a board covered in dirt, but alive and well. A passing police car noticed some movement near the tree and thought it was a cat, but got out to check and sure enough the baby was there. It wasn't exactly as I had recalled from the "dream", and to be honest I don't even remember taking a nap that day to have had a dream, but that is the only thing it could have been. Anyway, you're definately not crazy. Strange stuff happens.

Have any of you tried Sadaf? We have tried the one in Dubai, and often get take-out from the location here in Abu Dhabi. I really love the food. Glad to hear of all of these other locations, like the one in Jumeirah as well called Tehran. I would love to check it out. Thanks

You can get a standard labor contract at immigration when doing the visa. The from from immigration is the only one we have ever used. Edit to add that they may also require that you have applied for her national id as well. I know we had to show them the receipt for the id card when my DH applied for our new maid a few months ago. edited by momof3 on 12/02/2012

You do have to get a police report first showing that you filed it as missing. My friend went through this last summer, so I don't remember everything in detail, but I remember the embassy telling her that she could not request a new passport without the police report.

You need to go to the Philippine Embassy (or maybe consulate in dubai). She needs an OEC (Overseas Employment Certificate), or she will not be allowed to leave the Philippines to come back here. Assuming you are taking her, and she is sponsored by your husband, you need to take your and your husband's passports, her and her passort with you. She will have to pay for some insurance and membership ( I think the insurance was called Balik mangagawa). There are also 3 forms that you can find online from the embassy website that you have to fill out as well: en employment contract, information sheet and one other I can't remember. The embassy will certify the documents you filled out, and then issue the OEC. Total cost is about 300 DHS. Also, since she is returning back to you and not a new employer, they asked me to write a paper saying she has worked for us for X years, and is returning back to work again for us. They called it an employment certificate from the employer. It was really just a handwritten note from me, and signed. Good luck!

Our maid has an account with NBAD. If you get her a ladies savings account, there are no fees and you only need 1,000dhs to deposit in order to open the account initially. No minimum balance to maintain the account. They never asked her salary. It was very easy.

I called her, they want to live together in your house. I think I missed something...huh? So confused. Maybe I clicked on the link wrong? Sounds like she is saying that this lady wants to live with her DH, but in the house of whoever employs her...not YOU specifically, unless you are the one who hires her. She has to understand that it is illegal for you to have her DH living in your house if he is not sponsored by you. She would be better off living out and finding a place they can live together. edited by momof3 on 17/01/2012

TY both, yes it is really very confusing. Ok, so that I understand: Because my DH is an AD local we have this Thiqa card that gives us free access oinly to govt hospitals in AD but NOT private hospitals in AD. And even though we physically live in Dubai, we are not covered by any health scheme here fully because we are technically Abu Dhabi locals. Phew. Is that right? My husband is local, and the family book is from Alain(part of Abu Dhabi). I am in the back of the book. You also have full paid access to private hospitals in Abu Dhabi as well. The only difference is that you pay 50% of any prescription written by a Dr in a private hospital. All checkups, lab work, etc are all fully covered. I have not tried to use any facility in Dubai, but have been told that if it is out of Abu Dhabi then there is some type of co-pay in the hospitals listed in the Thiqa handbook. If it is not listed in the Thiqa handbook, and outside of Abu Dhabi, that they will not pay up front, but will reimburse some portion after the fact. Again, though, only what I have been told and not tried to use anything outside of Abu Dhabi up to this point.

Thanks for the info Frances. I had never even heard of Goodbaby, and actually hadn't thought of ToysRUs. I particulary want the PegPerego convertible seat since I already have the PegPerego Isofix base from the infant car seat, so would like to be able to continue using it. I know Mamas and Papas carry Peg Perego as well, but they are so overpriced for the exact thing (with different cover) than what you can get at Babyshop. Thanks again!

I haven't read all of the posts, so forgive if this is repeated information... I don't know if it is similar to the US, but I know when you are going to apply for another citizenship/passport and you are a US citizen, we go to the embassy and ask for an afidavit with a certified copy of the passport. The afidavit basically says that I am a US citizen, and I have the right to apply for X country's passport due to marriage/birth or whatever. Also, that I will be signing a document attesting that I will give up my US citizenship, but in actuality this is not the case. I am not giving up my citizenship, but merely signing a necessary document required by X country, in order to receive their passport. This is notarized by the embassy and then they attach the certified copy of the current passport, then if your US passport is confiscated in the process of applying for the new country's passport/citizenship, and any issue ever arises, you have documentation that you had no intention of actually giving up your US citizenship. I have done this for each of my children who were born in the US, but also obtained their UAE citizenship through their father. I have been in the family book (at the back) for 10 years now, but have not yet pushed my husband to do the application for my passport/citizenship. I have a friend who just completed all of the necessary documents and interviews (after 16 years of marriage). From beginning to end it took nearly a year to complete the process. Hi momof3. Thank you for your info regarding the procedure for US citizens. I wonder if the US embassy still does that. edited by AnonDubai on 01/01/2012 I'm sure they still do it. If in doubt, though, just draw up your own paper with similar wording to what I wrote above and just take it to the embassy for notarization. Also ask them to do a certified copy of your passport to attach to it. It is really a fast and simple thing to have done, and will give you peace of mind for the future.

She said she would rather no time off, then to be off starting at 11?:\: I would tell her that it's her choice. If she would rather no time off, then so be it. I know many maids who don't get any time off at all for years, and would jump at the chance for time off starting at any time of the day.

I gave birth there almost one year ago, and I was happy with it. I still take my son there for his pediatric checkups as well. They handled my high risk pregnancy very well. All labor and delivery units are private, and most recovery rooms are as well. The only downside I saw was that they do not do epidurals. Expect a fully natural birth if you go there. If you make an appointment, try to get in with Dr Ritu. She is the head of the obgyn dept, and she is really great. Any more specific questions, please feel free to ask.

Bumping an old thread up for any more up to date information. We have done this trip quite a few times but from UK, this will be our first time to travel from Dubai/Abu Dhabi. We will be travelling in late April next year. What flights would you recommend? I have found some good prices with American Airlines (operated by Etihad) travelling via New York but the same flight if booked with Etihad costs 50% more. We are travelling with 2 kids (4 and 18mths). Thanks I got really excited when you said the same flight was 50% less when you book through AA, so I checked it out. Maybe you are looking at only one leg of the flight, because when I checked the same for our family the exact same route (AUH-JFK-MCO and back) on AA came to $13,900 (or roughly 51,000DHS) for economy, and the exact same route on Etihad for us came to 36,000DHS. Etihad was definately the cheaper option.

If you didn't get her card, then how do you know her name and details? Because the staff at the shop gave them to me from their copy of her receipt To be honest, I would probably report this to the police. Who knows if the cc she used at the store was actually hers and not someone else's that she scammed before yours. Maybe I am alone in this, but I always look at my cc when I am using it, and I would absolutely realize if the credit card was not mine...especially when I pulled it out to use it again.

Isn't this a British English vs American English thing? Learned is to American English as learnt is to British English. Both having the same use and meaning. That's what I always thought...unless in 'British' English you are referring to a scholar, as below. "A learned person" (learn-ed) We are on the same page. I am referring to the words both used as the past tense of a verb. When used as an adjective, then the word has a different pronunciation, like in your example (and I believe the same spelling in both American and British English).
