Thanks for the well-wishes. I had the operation last Thursday. Dr Yasser did not put in the mesh, he says it would be overkill after he put in 3 layers of sutures to tighten all the loose stomach muscles and fix the hernia. The tummy tuck is looking very good and the new bellybutton is fab (the bits I can see when they change dressings). I asked the Dr for Voltaren suppositories with my normal pain meds and he agreed. I had them with my previous c-section and the recovery time was amazing. Within 24 hrs I was up and walking around the room. City Hospital is quite stocked with useful furniture - they brought me a leather recliner so that I could sit with my legs up and watch some TV. The physiotherapists were lovely, checking on me every day. I could easily walk up and down some dummy stairs they had in the passage - this is all due to the Voltarens. If your muscles are relaxed, then you can deal with pain much easier. Am back at home, recovery is good so far. No problems with my wound. Dr recommended some spanx instead of the hospital stomach binder (velcro, but it folds over and is uncomfortable). So I tried spanx last week at K Lynn - they were hard to pull up by myself and I tried their XL size. I bought some amazing shapers from Debenhams (their own brand) and eventually found that the size 10 was perfect. They have a strap like a bra, but are cut out below the breasts, so you wear your own bra. They are super comfortable for night-time wear too. They have a mesh inner layer - soft and breathable and pulls up easily without catching on the skin (like the spanx does). The shiny outer layer rolls down easily and I can change them without help and without straining my muscles too much. All in all, very happy with the procedure, my doctor and the lovely nursing staff at City Hospital.

I saw Dr Yasser Khattab at City Hospital. Very well-mannered, discussed all my options and am having umbilical hernia repair with mesh insert and an abdominoplasty next week. Will post afterward about my recovery and hospital experience, in case anyone is interested.

My dd is in the Springs Montessori nursery (started Sep 2011). We are very happy with her progress and the principal is REALLY strict about procedure and protocol. Drop-off and pick-up is at certain times only. Pickup is from 12:30 to 13:00 and at 13:00 the door gets locked (the security guard has his lunch time). The door does NOT get opened unless you have a prior appointment with the principal. They only unlock the door again at 13:30, no matter who stands outside in the sun lol. They are very security conscious and every member of staff knows just about every child's name (I like that personal touch, it makes the little ones feel secure). DD learnt the basic educational materials very quickly, and her teacher brought more advanced materials from the older casa for one-on-one stimulation. All in all, we are very happy we chose that nursery.

There is a little tailor at the mosque next to the Choithrams (near Springs 7). Not sure if they come out though.

Sezzam in Mall of the Emirates is always open during Ramadan. It is located next to the ski slope (towards the right, the Kempinski side). They have big black curtains sectioning everything off, but serve their full normal range of buffets and dishes.

I had 2 c-sections in 5 yrs and having lost the baby weight, I still have the horrible pouch. It is very difficult to find pants that fit properly and am now fed up enough to go and see a surgeon. Also having some pelvic floor problems (kegel exercises have not made any difference) Can you recommend a good doctor and tell me about your experience please?

I saw Dr John McEwan at City Hospital last year for some chronic sinus problems, he did a septoplasty and I was very impressed with his level of care and expertise. Might be worth your while to see him for a consultation. I had to take my kids with me for a follow-up post surgery and he even put on his special gear and explained the procedure to them (demonstrating on my nose). I thought that was very nice of him.

I had a similar bump a few years ago on my arm that became huge as well. Went to my doc and it turned out to be a spider bite. Just let the doctor have a look, it may be that he needs some antihistamine to deal with an allergic reaction to the venom.

I usually buy the black cherry pie filling in a tin (sometimes available from Spinneys, Carrefour and Geant). Then I mix it in with the organic apple and cinnamon pancake mix for some yummy cherry treats. I'm very wary of buying fresh cherries, they are very expensive and not always the freshest - sometimes they start going mouldy a day after buying them.

I have a gifted 2 year old and spoke to some professionals about gifted children in the UAE. There aren't any programmes or courses to help parents. But one of them suggested that I try a google search for gifted children's resources in the USA or UK and ship the necessary items to Dubai to help. Haven't gotten around to it yet, but maybe you can find something useful online.

Check on Dubizzle. Lots of people are selling their keyboards for much cheaper than in the shops.

My ex-neighbor's mum used to fly out from the UK every year and volunteer here. She is a keen golfer herself. I remember her telling me about the fabulous dinner they had at the end of the tournament and perks like vouchers to hair salons. Go and have fun with it!

Health factory was a big disappointment. Signed up for 1 month. Gave them my list of food allergies. One day my entire lunch consisted of yellow rice, 5 peas and 2 slices of mushroom in the entire serving. I emailed them a photo and complained. Didn't improve much thereafter. After a month of controlled meals - I put on 3,5kg too! Big waste of money and time.

I saw Le Creuset at Bloomingdales in Dubai Mall - not too expensive either. I just use the cheap little blue clay one I bought at Spinneys - works really well. Just remember if you get a clay one - don't store it closed, it gets moldy. You have to store the lid on its side, inside the bottom section and it will be fine.

Any of the interior decorator/curtain and upholstery companies should be able to help you convert it into a cushion. I've used World of Curtains and Welcome Furniture Trading over the past 8 years and found both companies' quality of stitching and fabrics to be very good (and much cheaper) than Sedar. Welcome Furniture Trading Tel 266-3903. I don't have the number for World of Curtains anymore.

I know of a friend in Arabian Ranches who had to pay the 5,000 deposit to get a 2 x 3 metre section of paving done - then he had to pay 2,000 for an inspection as well. I also know of people in the Lakes who just kept quiet and had the work done anyway and security didn't give them any problems, but I'm not sure what excuse they gave to come in to the Lakes. One other lady I know had an entire section walled off in her villa in Maeen and sold their villa - and then just had Emaar sign off a certificate that the work was safe (a few years after the fact). So its up to you to decide how you want to approach it.

We have the same problem, I live in a middle unit too. Luckily my neighbors (the previous 2 sets) never cooked much curries, but their cigarette smoke used to filter through as well. Now the owner is renovating to move in himself, I just hope they don't like curries either! My husband is an engineer and he has had a good look around everywhere but couldn't find the leak. He says he doesn't want to spend thousands of dirhams to get Emaar to get a professional A/C specialist to test for leakages. It involves using colored smoke in the villa next door, then checking where it enters into your ceiling spaces before your vents blow it into the room - very technical stuff. of course, one would expect Emaar to pay for their shortcomings, but the villas are old and its just not worth the battle of trying to get them to cough up. So for now, we are putting up with it, but maybe you could ask your neighbors if they mind opening their kitchen window when they cook strong smelling foods.

Welcome to Dubai! I live in the Lakes and my husband works in the Sharjah area. He loves the drive down Al Khail highway and sometimes even the outer ring road - takes him about 35 minutes to come home. Our daughters are in Dubai British School (equal distance to the Lakes from DIA, but I couldn't get in there, the waitlist was too long). Taxis are plentiful in the Lakes area. DIA has a bus service for the kids who live nearby. And the Lakes is also very near the Emirates Hills Golf Course metro railway station if you want to travel to Mall of the Emirates or Ibn Battuta shopping malls. Been in our little villa here for 4 years now and love it very much - its so close to all the access roads.
