This definitely sounds more than friendly, and I would indeed be suspicious. I think your husband has some explaining to do.

My brother and his wife were set up by mutual friends. Fifteen years and two adorable kids later, they're still happily married.

I've asked for an explanation, and the agent tells me that if we had serviced our AC regularly then this wouldn't have happened. I've now asked him to show me the report which explains that we are responsible for the breakdown of the compressor.

I've been to TMMC several times and always been very happy. I don't go to a specific stylist because with my schedule I have to take whatever appointment I can get. All the girls there are very good. And the head massage is a nice bonus! :)

We got our wedding bands there a few months back, and upon closer inspection of my husband's ring (an hour before the wedding) I realized the "rose gold" strip in the middle (of a white gold ring) was actually dye painted on. The whole ring is white gold, and the dye is now wearing off. We haven't yet gone in to complain, but we will be doing so - and hopefully getting a refund or a new (properly made) ring!

A quick Google search should give you all the information you need. As far as getting one in Dubai, I'm not sure. I got my current one before I came here. I can't imagine why not.

Yes the IUD is convenient but I had the Mirena I for about a year -and really didn't feel myself and got various nasty side effects. I would recommend avoiding a hormonal IUD and rather get a non-hormonal one. Google 'hate Mirena' and you'll see lots of horror stories. (Although I know some people do well on it) Due to my issues with hormones, I use the non-hormonal one. No side effects at all.

I've used an IUD for about 10 years (after every pill I tried made me ill) and it's been a dream. You only have to think about it every 5 years.

None recently. I searched the floor for any creatures and found nothing. I've had ant bites, and they're usually quite small. The area is about a square inch in size, and it's puffy and now purple and black. Bizarre!

I don't think their comments are unreasonable. Really? "It was harrowing as the kids had to get ready for school and my husband had to leave early for a meeting.” “We did not have water the entire day and we kept refilling cans with pool water to use in the bathrooms. It felt like living in a third world country.” "As investors living with families, we would have liked some forewarning at least.” These comments are anything but reasonable. Harrowing? Talking about your pool, and in the next sentence likening it to a third world country? Forewarning about a burst pipe? I do understand their irritation - they paid a lot of money for their homes and have to deal with the inconvenience of dry taps. But these comments a bit over the top. edited by MrsCanuck on 19/09/2013

Don't be so quick to blame lack of parking on schools. I was on the planning committee for the building of a school, and the school did everything in its power to get adequate parking. A certain local road and transport authority denied them everything they asked for time and time again, and eventually they had to accept it and build what was granted - which was completely inadequate parking that has led to a massive headache at pickup and drop-off every day. On another note, I don't have issues finding parking at the community center, but I do get aggravated by the inconsiderate you-know-whats (in Chelsea tractors 99% of the time) who sit outside the entrance to the Marche with their engines running for half an hour waiting for the maid to finish shopping...when there are empty spots 10 feet away. You get 2 or 3 of them in a row, and suddenly half the empty spaces in the car park are inaccessible.

Thanks for all the replies ladies. I managed to get an appointment with Dr Eade at the end of October - considering that I've been dealing with this for most of my life I can wait another 6 weeks :). I tried acupuncture about 12 years ago for another issue, and it was a miracle cure. I'm optimistic it will work for this as well, but if it doesn't my next step will be hypnotherapy and then NLP. Thanks Feefmick for the suggestions. DubaiRose, I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through, but it's nice to hear you're able to ease the pain. All the best. xx

Thanks for your replies ladies. I've only got 6 plants, and they require weekly watering - takes no more than 5 minutes. I think it would be waste of time and money to pay for someone to show up for 2 hours at a time. I'm in AR - if there are any kind ladies who would be willing to come by a few times I would love offer you some delicious grape juice in return!

The end of my first summer in Dubai is nearing, and I'm not sure what to do with my plants for the 5 weeks that I'll be away. I don't have any friends or neighbors who will be in town, and the maid service I use has a 2-hour minimum per visit, which is much too long for watering a few plants! Is there any service that does quick weekly visits for this purpose?

@rachelindubai I've always been of the same mindset as you. I don't necessarily think I'm being scammed, and I genuinely feel for these people who make very little money. If I had money to throw around I wouldn't think twice about it, but frankly I don't. I was planning to only use her services for another couple of weeks anyway, and I don't think she'd be able to pay me back by the time she's finished. Not only that, but I barely know her. I do hope she can get some help if she does indeed need it, but I don't think I'm the right person to do it.

Thanks for your replies. I'm new at this maid thing, and the advice is welcome. I didn't give her anything and have no intention to do so, but I'm now worried about having her in my home. I was going to be finished with her at the end of the month anyway, as I'm going away and wanted to get someone different after summer. I'll give the agency a call and let them know what happened and cancel her services.

I've had a maid for about 10 months who comes twice a week for a couple of hours. I barely ever see her, as she comes while I'm at work. I always leave her a tip, and I gave her a generous cash gift at Christmas as well. I got an SMS from her this morning telling me her husband is in the hospital and will have an operation tomorrow, and can I give her money and she'll pay me back next month. I told her no, but I'm wondering if this normal. I hear about live-in maids doing this, but is it common for an agency maid to do it?

It's extremely painful but thankfully short lived. It's only a few seconds, and then you'll feel a bit crampy for a few hours. I've had it done with and without painkillers, and they made no difference.

Hubby and I are thinking of moving early next year, but our lease will be renewed at the beginning of August. Do we have to stay until the end of our lease, or can we give 6 months' notice at the start of our new contract and only pay one cheque (of two)? Also, if anyone has a link to the rental laws I'd appreciate it. I can't find it anywhere! TIA.

I understand the reason behind it, but this is a risk salons have to take. I don't think it's fair to insist that customers take time out of their day to go and make a deposit. I've been there several times before, for cuts and Kerastraight, and I've never missed an appointment. I would have been much more understanding if I was a first-time client.

Thanks for your replies ladies. I should clarify that I don't hate birds - I also enjoy seeing and hearing them in the garden. It's the mess they make that's the problem. Our garden (we're in AR) is half bricked over, with furniture on the bricked surface, and half grass. I have no problem with the birds hanging around on the grass, and in fact I've put a bird feeder out at the end of the yard so they'll stay away from the house. Unfortunately, they seem to like the cat food better and they crowd around on the bricks and make a disgusting mess of it - and our expensive furniture! I thought the cat would scare the birds away, but she seems to be the only cat in the world who's afraid of birds. I try to scare them away myself when I see them, but I'm at work 5 days a week and always come home to find bird **** all over the place. Frustrating indeed!

I've never understood the whole "I'm ashamed that he's Canadian" mentality. You hear this every time some celebrity acts like an idiot - "I'm so ashamed to be from the same country as xxxx". Why? We are all responsible for our own actions and nobody else's, and there are idiots from every country.

You might be the only one, yes. What difference does it make to you if there are options available to people who don't want to be around children? There are more than enough options for people with children, aren't there? From my point of view, there aren't nearly enough adult-only places. Hubby and I have date night every Thursday, and we used to go to our local restaurant (the only place close enough to walk so we can have a bottle of grape). We stopped going eventually, because we were constantly surrounded by screaming, whining children, many of whom were running around and bumping into our chairs. After a long, hectic week at work the last thing we want is more chaos. We suggested to the place that it would be a good idea to make a small section of the patio (they have a smaller area that's separate from the main patio) child-free. It hasn't happened, so we now have our date night at home. We just can't be bothered to play the taxi lottery and (if we actually manage to get a taxi) spend a fortune on an expensive meal at an adult-only place.

This is a really tough one - big pros and big cons. I'll tell you a bit about my two experiences with it: 1. The first time I took Accutane was when I was 17. I was approaching my last year of high school and had terrible acne which was leaving scars. I'd tried all the less evil remedies, such as birth control, with no success. My doctor put me on Accutane for 4 months. It made an enormous difference to my skin - no more grease, no more pimples, just perfect clear skin - for 2 years. However...there were serious side effects. Without getting into the gritty details, I'll just tell you that I had 2 years of ****. I was sick and depressed, was admitted to the hospital more than once, had to take a year off university, had to quit my job, and basically had to have my family take care of me. As soon as my skin started to get greasy again, I started to feel better. I vowed I'd never take it again. 2. Fast forward a few years. Through my early 20's my skin was always quite greasy, and I broke out a lot. But it wasn't until I turned 26 that it suddenly exploded out of control. I'd shower in the morning and wash my face, and within 1 hour at work I'd be in the bathroom mopping up the grease. I had huge, cystic welts on my neck and jawline that were leaving big ugly pock marks. My self-esteem plummeted, and I was in pain. I tried all the less evil remedies again, and again nothing worked. I saw a dermatologist who suggested Accutane. I explained my concerns, and he told me that it usually affects people much more mildly in their 20's than their teens. When I told him I'd become depressed after taking it the first time, his response was "how is your acne making you feel now?". Good point. I reluctantly started another course, which took 9 months to clear my skin. That was 4 years ago, and although I've suffered short bouts of depressions it's been MUCH easier this time around. My skin is still clear, thankfully. I'm not sure this will help you any, as everyone reacts differently. Some people have no problems, and others suffer devastating side effects. The scary part is that the side effects can last for a long time after you stop taking it. My suggestions is to consult a reputable dermatologist and make sure you've exhausted all other avenues before trying Accutane. Good luck.

In my early 20s and currently have no desire whatsoever for children. However I assume that by the time I'm 30 the maternal instinct will kick in? But this thread is making me question that assumption... I agree with blimey - not necessarily. I've never wanted kids, but everyone insisted the maternal instinct would kick in around 30. Well, here I am at 30 and still no urges. That's not to say it will never happen, but I don't think there's any magic age for it.

I suffered horrible IBS for years and had every test under the sun. No doctor could find anything wrong, yet I was literally doubled over in pain almost constantly. It seemed like everything I ate made me hurt. A friend suggested the paleo diet a couple of years ago, and I thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a go. Amazing! Within 2 days, my stomach felt flat and happy for the first time in about 10 years. No pain, no bloating. It's still a novelty to wake up every day feeling good. Of course, everybody is different and it may not do anything for you, but it's worth a try.

Hi daisydai, I'm glad to hear you're taking a look at paleo! I've always been a bit wary of those "cleanse" programs - they just flush everything out of you and make you feel weak for days on end. Not healthy! If you regularly stick to a clean diet you won't need any "cleansing." I started reading up on paleo a couple of years ago. I'd always had a number of health issues (nothing life-threatening, just things that made me really uncomfortable), and a friend pointed me to this website: http://whole9life.com/category/whole-30/ I decided to do the 30-day challenge, and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. Yes, the first couple of week were difficult cravings-wise. I felt hungry all the time for a few days, because my body was adjusting to the lack of simple carbs. But within 2 days, the painful bloating I'd always suffered from disappeared. Within a week, I was wearing pants I hadn't worn for years. Within 2 weeks, my energy levels soared, my skin cleared up, I started sleeping well for the first time in my life, and I just felt generally good. At the end of that month I had lost 12 pounds, and that was without exercising. It was amazing. After that, I maintained the diet at about a 90% level and started getting a lot of exercise. Over about 6 months, I lost a total of 30 pounds and went from a size 10 to a 2 (American sizing). I now maintain the diet at about an 80% level, and I've kept the weight off and still feel good. I absolutely recommend this lifestyle to anyone. And it's just that - a lifestyle. Not a crash diet. If you need extra inspiration, this is a great website: http://robbwolf.com/paleo-testimonials/ If you're struggling to find decent recipes or don't know how/what to order in restaurants, I'm happy to share some of the things I've come up with. Let me know! PS: I also moved here from Vancouver in August :)

Try the paleo diet. You don't need to buy anything - just follow the eating plan for a clean, healthy lifestyle. You'll feel cleansed without the enema effect of the Wild Rose. I follow it regularly (not just as a once-in-a-while cleanse) and I've never felt or looked better.

Update: I went to Ikea yesterday and showed my burnt out bulb to 3 different sales people in the lighting department. I got 3 blank stares in return and spent 30 minutes searching the entire lighting area for anything that resembled my light bulb. Ended up leaving empty-handed and frustrated and wondering if I'll ever be able to see my foyer again. Any other suggestions?

Ikea! Of course. Why didn't I think of that? I will stop by tomorrow (after returning the absurdly expensive one I bought at Ace that didn't fit) and figure out which one it is. Stand by...
