My maid uses a company called Makati Express. Think they charge a few hundred and there is no limit to the weight of the box.

M9 doesn't have a pool (or at least that's what we were told) and if you have kids then that might be of importance to you. We live in M8, accross the lake and stone's throw from the pool and playground and it is a lifesaver for us!

Wow! I would never have thought that the Ritz would be so poor out here. I took some people to the One & Only Royal Mirage for tea and that was quite pathetic as well. The food was awful and the service was so not up to the mark. Oh well....the quest for the perfect afternoon tea continues!

Thanks Emily! This week's TimeOut has 2 for 1 vouchers for tea at the Westin but I'm hoping I can get someone to give me a first hand view before we decide on going there. The Ritz is indeed always wonderful, no matter which country you're in:)

The guests came over at 4pm and left past 8:30pm so I'm guessing tea turned out okay! crazyleochic, I did try out the potato quiche day before and I'm actually surprised as to how nice it turned out! Did chicken, different types of cheese and mushrooms and it was lovely. You must share more of these quick n delicious types with us:) Thanks again folks!

Loving the ideas....can't really make a dozen things since their is little time between nursing the baby and running after a toddler, school runs etc...most of you know what its like!! On the sweet end, have decided to do one of Nigella's esspresso and walnut cakes....always looks very fancy and tastes fab with coffee so would make for a sweet ending. Doing watermelon, mint and feta cheese skewers....they look lovely with almost no effort! Perhaps will get some petit fours - anyone know where to get some nice ones around the Springs/Meadows area? I would love to do some kind of pie/quiche but I have to admit that I don't know how. Can I pick one up ready made or order?? Am happy to make sandwiches but need some ideas for fillings. Oh and did I mention that there will also be five kids between the ages 7-2yrs!! Thinking of just doing some sticky drumsticks and some pasta for them since that is close to dinner time for most kids. What do you ladies think?

Absolutely fantastic - that is all I can say about her! Just had a baby five weeks ago and can't say enough good things about her. She knows her job well and has excellent bedside manners. I did a series of 'first appointments' with several doctors out here and none of them was a match on Dr. Braithwaite. Also the midwives at the AH are all fabulous and the whole experience was really wonderful. Stick with Dr. Braithwaite, you will not regret it!

I have a five week old who is now sleeping through the night and I think the secret is to feed them really well during the day and make sure they go to sleep on a full tummy. I'm breastfeeding but I express at least three bottles for the day (5oz each) and one for bedtime. At other times during the day, I latch him on but because he gets most ofhis intake from the bottle, we don't run into other issues such as sleep problems. Content babies don't cry for half hour stetches or even ten mins I would say - your little one is definitely in need of someting and is calling out to you. I would do the needful now and not worry about future associations. You should also keep an eye on the weight gain as that'll tell how well the baby is feeding. Hope things work out real soon for you guys. x

My son is now 3.7yrs and is 115cms or perhaps more by now and therefore now we use it as a booster with the regular seatbelt. We dis use the five point harness till a few months back. The seat is very sturdy, easy to use and easy to clean - its no surprise that it wins so many awards every year! I'll be using the same for my little boy who at present is only four weeks but by the time he is one, he'll be ready for the Britax. We're in the Meadows in case you'd like to have a look.

If anyone out here is interested, please call Eton at 800-ETON to see if it would work for your child. I'm really hoping that thru EW we'll be able to pull this through!

In my opinion, a lot of women buy day creams but skimp on night cream which I personally think does far more for your skin than a day cream does. I currently use Chanel Line Repair which is ideal to start using in your 30s and in the morning, my skin feels so soft and supple that's its just amazing. As a day cream I use Guerlain Desert Aqua which is great as a hydrating cream, specially if you've been living in this harsh climate long enough but in no way does it perform the same magic that the Chanel one does! Best is to go to the counter and ask for a sample. Use it for seven days and see how well it works for you and then go and buy the same. Sephora can fill up a sample for you of any product hence I usually go to them. Good luck!

In 2006 I bought a 1.5ct VVS1 G grade Belgian diamond and paid AED55k which then seemed like a fair price. I'm guessing it could have gone up by AED10k now since in the US those specs are now priced at $20-25k. Re the certificate, it really depends where the diamond is from. Diamonds from Antwerp, Belgium will of course carry an HRD rating and those from the US will have a GIA rating. I have attended several talks on the subject and the one fact that seems to stick out is that the HRD grading is not as strict as the GIA one and so you can in all honesty perceive the one graded by HRD to be a notch below what the certificate states. Price wise, I haven't found much of a difference. A great website to review current prices is www.pricescope.com. I am at this point shopping for a solitaire pendant and would love to hear if someone's seen something recently that they could recommend or the names of stores that you ladies have had good experiences with. Thx

They have a white chicken korma which is I often order for my three year old - its made in a cashew nut paste and is actually a bit sweet but quite delicious and something the kids can eat. For myself, I tried a chicken biryani and it wasn't anything extraordinary I would say.

We just moved here from Doha and so we've used QA several times over the past four years. I personally find them much better than Emirates - the planes are newer, the staff is far nicer and more hepful than most airlines and I have found them to be quite flexible on most things e.g. counter closing and us reaching late, excess baggage etc. Have done several sectors - US, Europe, Asia and Africa (using both business and economy) but always from and to Doha....you might feel the inconvenience of then having to wait for a connecting flight to Dubai although the fares might be more tempting as well! We also recently bought tickets on QA which were 2 for the price of 1 - fantastic deal! Enjoy your trip....I'm sure you'll be pleased with QA.

Tallybalt: Even the Mulberry here is a local franchise just as every other brand in the region but the brand image and customer satisfaction is obviously quite important to such stores and they take immediate action. I've also had similar experiences with Pottery Barn and TODS recently and in all cases the stores are owned by local business houses but complaining to headquarters got the job done for me and in all instances, they did not involve anyone at the local level. The local staff would only ring me to say that the replacement was ready and waiting for me!

I would not bother with the store out here and instead straight away shoot an email to the GM of Bloomingdales NY. In Nov 2008 I bought pillows from Bloomies NY, brought them to Doha and it took me a good three months to figure out that there was something not right about them. Sure enough, the packaging of the two pillows was identical and so were the fabric covers but when we took the pillows out of the covers, we discovered that there was a difference in filling and size. I wrote to the GM and within a couple of days, they sent me new pillows with a card of apology. I was worried since at that time, there was no Bloomies in the region and I really didn't fancy shipping the pillows back to the US but the GM took immediate action and the matter was resolved ASAP. Local staff would never have been able to help the same way in my opinion. Just to reiterate my suggestion of not dealing with the staff here, few weeks ago, I bought a bag from Mulberry at MoE and in the first go, the paddle lock fell off. When I called the store, it was clear that they didn't have much authority and said that they would try and fix it or see what could be done. I straight away emailed the CEO of Mulberry and even though it was the royal wedding weekend, he got back to me immediately saying that I should not worry at all and someone would be in touch with me as soon as their offices re-opened. Thereafter for the next one week, I had someone call me from London every day to tell me when the new bag was shipped, when it would reach, after it had reached and to check if I was satisfied with the replacement. None of this would have happened had I not gone direct to the CEO. Let me know if you'd like to shoot a note to the GM and I'll send you all the contact details.

For name labels, we order them at www.namebubbles.com. Since my son is only at nursery, I order what they call the daycare pack and it has more than enough labels for clothing, shoes, lunch boxes and other items. Total cost is $34.88 and I pay $4.95 for shipping (which is only $2 more than shipping them in the US). They reach within a week and have been going into the laundry for at least two years now and are just fine. Same goes for the the dishwasher proof ones that we use for lunch boxes, bottle etc - they've done great as well. I think they are a good product and you get to pick your own colors, designs etc and the kids have fun with that.

terrible_twos: Chanel recently introduced a dark circle corrector which I've been using for over three months now and do think it works. I've been using it every night and it has made a difference for sure. Also it has a rollerball and you simply draw three circles around your eye, which prevents excess usage of the product. Just be careful of the bottle though - its made of ceramic and my first bottle broke by simply falling into the sink. Its cost around 250.

I guess I'm generally not that harsh on people and think that human error is always possible - but to be able to trace it three weeks after they've made the delivery, in my opinion is commendable and a rare occurance in this region!

I know that several people have had bad experiences with Champion but I just experienced some really good service from their end and thought I'd mention it here. We only been in town for a few months and have been using the one in the Meadows. Three weeks ago, we sent a white bedsheet with two pillow cases and only when it was time for it to be used, I realized that one pillow case was missing. Rang them up and didn't expect much since it had been three weeks and it was a plain white one and knew it would be hard to track. Was devastated to say the least since the sheet set is 800TC Egyptian cotton and not only pricey but very hard to find. A lady called Kristin took down all the details and for three days she rang me morning and evening to give me an update on the missing pillow case and then finally rang this morning to say that they had found it and it will be delivered this evening. Turned out that the guy who picked it up from our house, entered it as one pillow case and not two on the receipt (note to self: must read receipt next time!) and that's what caused the confusion. Needless to say I am most impressed with not just the fact that they found the missing item but also the fact that they kept calling me to give me updates on the situation. So happy to have found the missing pillow case!!

We live in a 5 bed + study and pay 240k/year. There is nothing shabby at our end but yes, Meadows is not upscale housing by any standard and bathroom/kitchen fittings are identical to what I had even when I lived in Dubai years ago in a two bed appartment - but no, its not falling apart!. I would not recommend Meadows 9 - the approach to Meadows 7, 8 and 9 is from a highway which definitey takes away from the cozy residential feel. 9 is right next to the electric pylons and visually I find it quite ugly - my little one goes to nursery in Springs 7 which is very close to it hence I see it every morning. Meadows 6, 7 and 8 are built on a circular lake which makes them slightly more attractive however its Meadows 1-5 that are the greenest and have a nicer feel. The community itself is quite nice and we enjoy living here. The security is not very tight and pretty much anyone can enter with a fake villa/street number. There is also no speed limit within the community and you often see taxis screeching about - I find this scary since I have a three year old and can't stand people speeding in residential spaces. Like others, we like being away from all the hustle and bustle and yet enjoy being close enough to all the action!

We went to Morocco on our honeymoon and spent a good two weeks in Marrakesh - have to say that it's one of the most enchanting cities I've ever visited in my life. The entire city is made of pink stone and that just gives it such a fairy tale appearance. The architecture, the sights, the sounds are just incredible. The famous medina Jaame el Fana is so fascinating and the shopping is to die for! We went with two pieces of luggage and came back with nine so you can imagine what a shopper's paradise it is. We brought back the most beautiful hand made pottery, several tagines (Moroccan hand painted dishes), a dozen of the most gorgeous Moroccan lanterns, some beautiful carpets (woven by the Berber tribe in the mountains of morocco), and so many other pieces and souvenirs....oh and we bought quite a few paintings as well. That medina completely changes at sunset and you see many interesting sights - in the Arab world it is often referred to as the kingdom of black magic and for sure you feel a very heavy presence at sunset time over there....also saw people who looked to be at least 100yrs old and supposedly they are the djinns:) The palaces, mosques, gardens are all worth touring - the dining places in marrakesh are just incredible and everything from the food to the ambience is just so enchanting and the like of which you never see in other countries (have travelled a lot but never seen anything that compared). We did stay in a fantastic hotel somewhere in the Palmeria and they used to recommend the dining spots - for sure we were never disappointed! The place is so hip and yet so rustic.....think it's a definite must see destination. We spent only two days in Casablance - not much there really other than the big mosque....a bit dry I would say. We took the train from Casablanca to Marrakesh and it was a very comfortable journey. We also went to Esouaira (sp?) which is on the coast and even that was a lovely place to visit. We didn't get to Fez but you must go if you have a chance -most of the artisans are based there I believe so it should be interesting. Hope you have a fabulous holiday!

Can any of the moms guide me on which are the schools that have religion/Quran class; how many times a week is it and in your opinion is it substantial or only in name. Thanks.

In case you'd like to have to have juices/milk delivered to the house, you could log on to earlybird.ae. They deliver within 60 mins for a small charge but at least you won't have to worry about being out of drinks for your little one. Also rather than going out to eat with small kids, it is so much better to just order in. Sorry you're having a bad day - perhaps reading a good book whilst enjoying a cup of tea/coffee or a nice relaxing bath once the little one is in bed or perhaps picking up the phone and calling your best friend (wherever he/she may be) will make you feel a bit better. edited by NadiaA on 24/04/2011

I like to spend an entire day making freezing soups in small portions and at any given time, they make for a great meal for me or the little one - just add a salad on the side or a nice piece of bread and you're all set. If nothing else, it keeps you from reaching for unhealthy options. We do lentil soup (sometimes a variation with carrots otherwise plain), carrot and coriander, broccoli and leek, butternut squash or pumpkin and plain chicken soup which we then turn into a chicken noodle soup by adding some shredded chicken, coriander, lime and some veggies if on hand. Other than soups, I also make a large batch of meat sauce every week and that is used to make lasagne or use with plain penne and sprinkle with parmesam; cottage pie with a layer of meat sauce, peas and mashed potatoes; macaroni pie; sloppy joes....sauce poured over any kind of bread rolls we have in the house, grate cheese on top and pop in the oven and even an occassional pizza. We tend to use shortcrust pastry quite a bit to do Italian style veggie tarts which take barely 20mins to put together - spread a few spoons of green pesto (which stays well in the fridge) and sprinkle with all kinds of veggie sich as sliced zucchinis, red peppers, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes etc and pop the tart in the oven until crust is light golden. Once done, sprinkle some mozarella and pop into the oven again for it to melt. Spoon some more pesto on top and enjoy! I also buy pre-marinated chicken from Waitrose and freeze them - great if you have surprise guests of feel like having a roast chicken yourself.

We've been through the 'new nursery phase' twice - first when my son started in Qatar and this week after we moved to Dubai. Some of the things we did to ease thru the situation have been: - Visited the nursery a couple of times before joining to let him see his classroom, his chair etc. - Talk about the morning scenario before we go to bed - you can also adapt a story book to his situation....we used to read one called 'Off to Kindergarten'. Tell your little one in detail about what you will do in the morning from waking up, getting dressed, putting on shoes, having breakfast, grabbing water bottle and lunch bag and the trip to school. It helps when what you say is re-inforced in the same manner the next morning. - Allow him to take his favourite toy to school and make a big deal about Barney/Mickey going to nursery with your child. Mention that we'll have to leave him in the car so he doesn't get lost but he will be back to pick up your little one. - Create a relationship with your child's teacher and tell him that Ms. X is waiting for him and all kinds of fun stuff ready and waiting for him or that all the kids are waiting for your son to join them for outdoor play. Hope it works out for you guys - it took us almost a week the first time around (he was 18mnths then) but this time he bid me goodbye happily on the first day!

I just had my drapes done by someone who was recommended by a friend and they turned out to be far nicer than the Everest ones I have personally seen - I'm sure some ladies might have had better experiences with them. The gentleman who did mine is called Fazal and his number is 056-602-8527. He has a nice shop in Satwa behind the Iranian Hospital, has a wonderful selection of fabrics but of course you have to know exactly what you're looking for since he can show you the most expensive fabric in which case each window will come to around 3000 or you could work with nice looking but reasonably priced fabrics in which case you would be looking at 900-1200 for a 2X2 window (minus sheers). If you're specific with them, they can bring you the catalogues at home and you can choose but we preferred to go to the store. I also had them alter all the curtains that we brought from our previous home and they've done a beautiful job with re-using everything we had. For anyone interested in re-upholstering, I also had ten dining table chairs upholstered by the same shop and done in silk with the braid, they cost me 700 which I thought was brilliant. Very neatly done and very quick as well.
