Seems like everyone's been quite busy last month; personally the month just flew by for me. Right now I'm 24 weeks and doing great. I had my first appointment at Latifa Hosp last month and everything looked good. Baby of course didn't co-operate and so we are still in the dark about gender. Not that I am in a rush to know actually- it's quite fun not knowing and wondering but people around me are itching to start shopping. Hopefully next time baby will be more willing to share the secret. Doc did mention that I will have to redo the glucose test since I have a very strong family history of diabetes so that's one thing I am not looking forward to. Fasting, having to drink that nasty sugary drink and waiting 4hours all equals to a very very unhappy me:( As for baby prep, thankfully we are doing quite well. My sister-in-law had a baby last year so we'll be using quite a bit of her stuff. So far we have the changing table+crib (bought on dubizzle for 200dhs), vibrating seat, newborn bath, 2 play mats, walker and a whole bunch of clothes that will only be used if baby is a boy. My husband is insistent we stock up on baby wipes and diapers but I think it's a bit too early. Of course he didn't listen to me and last trip to London he picked up a couple. One area of baby shopping that has been hard is the baby travel system. I've looked at most brands and just can't seem to like any. I have a Mclaren for my 3yr old that I love and frankly any other stroller seems HUGE compared to it. If anyone has any suggestions on a good travel system that isn't too heavy or difficult to use and won't break the bank I'd love to hear them. Hope all you ladies are doing great.

My sister-in-law gave birth in Dubai in 2011. She and her husband are of 2 different nationalities. Like mentioned previously, the baby's birth certificate lists only the parents nationalities. The baby now has the mom's nationality and passport. No one ever told them to get the dad's nationality for the baby.

I let my 3yr old use the ipad (max 3hrs/week) but only under a parent's supervision and only with educational apps. At first I was very hesitant to let her use it but as she saw friends and cousins with it, she constantly wanted ours. I make sure its only used at home- under no circumstances does it leave the house. She doesn't get to sleep with it. I 'may' have used it once in a while to give myself a break, but even then I'm right beside her. Honestly I view it as any other technology you introduce your child- done wisely and in a correct way I don't see the harm in it.

Do you mean the tv series 'Omar'? It's being shown on MBC. I don't know the timings but most probably after 9pm.

I still haven't had a chance to pass by my local clinic to sort out my issue. Really hoping that I get a chance this week. silkie16, I've heard that with governement hospitals its quite normal to be given late appointments/scans. I remember a story where a woman was given an appointment for her 20week after she was due. Honestly that's why I tried to register with Latifa as early as possible- and as you can see even then my supposed 20week appointment isn't till my 28th week. They are supposed to be really busy hence all the late appointments. I've also not heard anything bad about Dubai Hospital. Perhaps it doesn't have the reputation that Latifa has because it's not an exclusive women and child hospital. 11legs and JBads, Thanks for the info. Will definitely be persistent. lilypad28, I got my confirmation sms for my appointment with Latifa. I got referred Sunday and got the sms Monday. Did you go directly to Latifa or a local clinic? I'm heading over to my local clinic to pick up papers for Latifa and to clear up whether I will have any earlier appointments (since Latifa app is for week28). Honestly with my last pregnancy I don't remember my doctor ever mentioning the importance of a 20week scan (I didn't have my daughter in Dubai). Yet everyone who has delivered here keeps telling me how important that 20week scan is. Conversely with my daughter I remember the doctor ordering several blood tests and a 3D scan for the NT test. Yet when I spoke to someone in Latifa they said since I don't meet the requirements for the test that it would not be done.

I'm pregnant with my 2nd and due Mid Jan. Right now I'm about 13weeks and morning sickness is still going strong. It hits me real bad in the afternoon and lasts all night through. Energy-wise it's been picking up last couple of days but it's still hard looking after my daughter some days. I'm hoping that it ends sometime in the next 2weeks. I'm sooo ready to start enjoying my pregnancy. As for giving birth, I registered with Latifa Hosp. I've heard the baby's heartbeat through doppler at 12weeks at GP appointment for referral. I'm going to wait and see how the appointments come up at Latifa before I consider getting to another doctor.

I started potty training my daughter at 2yrs 5months. I did try earlier but she got scared of the potty and so I backed off. I started in Feb and by April she was completely free of diapers- both daytime and nighttime. I tried all the methods I could think of. At first I left her in diapers and just took her to the potty (I got one that goes over the toilet) on the dot every hour or so. She wouldn't always go but when she did we made a big deal of it. We tried this for a couple of days but I felt like she wasn't quite getting the idea. So I went with her and bought her big girl underwear. She'd wear them a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon but remained in diapers during naps and bedtime and outings. Yet she still was confused and would have quite a few accidents. By then she had started telling me when she needed to go but wouldn't always make it to the potty. So then I started giving her rewards if she told me before she went. That one didn't always work and she'd pretend to need to go to get a treat. The thing that worked best for my daughter was to completely remove diapers from the picture. So she went to sleep, on outings, where ever with only her big girl panties and within 2days she was completely potty trained. Sure I had quite a few messes to clean up and we were running to the toilet every hour but it worked like a charm.

I paid for the antenatal care at Latifa. Yes, you should be able to get all tests done right away. I never saw any outside care, the antenatal care through Latifa/clinic covers everything. Good luck! It can be a little difficult in the beginning trying to have everything explained but be persistent and someone will guide you! Thanks CABear, was at the local clinic today to see the GP. The management side was quite a nightmare to say the least. The lady behind the counter could not answer one question straight. I am quite close to tears wondering if should continue with Latifa or just go a private hospital like NMC, would atleast save me all that trouble. nadiarikhaimi - Did you go to Latifa directly to register there? Or were you at the local clinic first for the referral? Since they dint see you at Latifa till the later stages of pregnancy they probably expect you to get the initial AnteNatal Care at your local clinic. I was given the form for blood tests and Ultrasound aswell, but was told that this will be done once I come back to pay the 5000 aed and see the OB/GYN at the local clinic on the given apointment date. May I ask where your primary health care center is? Mine falls in Khawaneej area. Also the reason they might not be answering the phone lines is probably that you were calling after 2 pm... these people do not believe in working late :) edited by lilypad28 on 11/07/2012 I went to Latifa Hospital to get my health card and was then referred to Rashidiya Local Cllinic which turned out to be closed and so was sent to Nad Al Hammar Clinic. I went to NAH clinic last Sunday. Saw a GP who took all my details and gave me the referral letter to Latifa along with the test orders. I'm a GCC national and so don't pay so all I was told was to wait for the sms of my Latifa appointment. That's it. And I didn't call after 2pm. I started calling at 11am and no one picked up till after 2pm. Even then, it was transferred to 3different people who had no idea what I was talking about. I really hope that going to the clinic will get me some clear answers.

This does seem strange. I registered and delivered with Latifa and had my earlier appointments at Umm Suqeim clinic. I registered at 15 weeks and had my first appointment right away. I didn't have any appointments at Latifa until I was about 36 weeks. Perhaps check with your local clinic and try to make an appointment with them. I recommend going to your local clinic in person and bring the receipt for the 5000 aed antenatal care, they should give you an appointment right away. Thanks CABear. Yes, I figured that the best thing would be to just head on over to my local clinic. Though I wish I would have been informed of the procedure and not have to run around trying to get answers. Hopefully when I do head to local clinic I can sort things out right the first time. silkie16, I haven't made up my mind about where else to go for check-ups and if everything is covered by Latifa, as CABear says, then I might just stick to one place. Especially because I will be paying everything out of pocket. edited by nadiarikhaimi on 11/07/2012

Hi silkie16, Yes I am considering appointments outside I was just under the impression that I would have earlier check-ups at my local clinic. I thought that check-ups at Latifa would only happen in my 3rd trimester. I have reached my local clinic and was told to simply pick up my paperwork for Latifa appointment. No one could provide me with any information and so I'm quite confused. Also I was given paperwork for blood tests to be done and yet no one can tell me when I'm supposed to do them or where!

It would be much wiser for your friend to live within her means rather than get into another mess with the banks here. It's just too risky. She is living within her means. The trouble is that she supports her family back home and they need to buy a house. I told her to either save it up or just forget the idea but her family have been pushing her and she had decided to just go for the loan. Thankfully it isn't too large and she was confident that she can handle the payments. Of course now she is reconsidering the situation. Anyway right now we aren't concerned with the new loan. She still only has sketchy information regarding the local bank threat of pursuing legal action over the unpaid interest. I hope there is someone on here who has experienced or knows someone who has experienced something like this. Any help would be appreciated.

talk to a lawyer Thank you ishehere for your reply. My friend is currently trying to find a lawyer, as well as speaking to some banking friends. However getting into contact with a good lawyer is proving difficult and whatever info she gets is sketchy at best.

My friend got into some trouble with a bank here in Dubai back in 2008. However she came back in 2010 and tried to fix the issue. Of course by then the bank (which is a local one) had taken the issue to court. My friend decided to deal directly with the court since the bank wanted the principal amount plus any interest regardless of whether she had made any payments - and she had been making payments for over a year until she lost her job. Anyway, she finally resolved the issue at court where she paid the principle amount less any payments she had made, all of which was calculated by the court. I don't recall her telling me of dealing with the bank after this. She got the clearance from the court, clearance from the police and was able to get residence visa. Finally last month she decided that she would need to take another loan (much smaller) to help her family out. She approached her bank and was told that she had a negative rating on Emcredit (not sure of the spelling). She explained the previous issues and was told that perhaps the bank forgot to remove the rating and once it was removed the loan wouldn't be an issue. So she then goes back to the local bank only to be told that since she dealt directly with the court and not them, they want X amount to cover up the lost interest. And unless she pays it, that they would fill another court case. They even mentioned that they still hold the original cheques and would use them in the new case. My friend is now scared. And angry. And very worried. She is thinking of going to court but is scared whether that'll just make matters worse. Perhaps she should just lay low and pray that the issue goes away. I hope someone can offer some advice to her. Thanks so much.

There was a bag in a certain shop I'd had my eye on for a while. I had checked online and instore and the price was 75dhs. There's a sale going on at the shop at the moment and I went to check out the price of the bag. Surpisingly- the 'original price' has been increased to about 150dhs and the 'sale price' is just a little over 75dhs. I just left the shop and certainly won't be buying thr again- sale or not. There was another shop, also during a sale, where the same item was priced at various prices just because of the color while the original price was the same regardless of the color. Also different branches of the same shop seem to price their items differently. This is why I hate sales in Dubai. You have to look long and hard to find a good bargain.

Creek Park is by the Dubai Courts, near Wafi and Healtcare city. It's between the Garhoud and Floating bridges. We took a cab. Dropped us off at the main gate and finding one was just as easy. I know you can use public transport but not sure of the bus routes or the metro line.

she doesn't go to nursery. but she has plenty of play dates. and cousins who she can't stop copying. maybe she got the 'garbage' idea from there. i know that my husband and i are the best teachers. we're actually drawing up plans as to how we can tackle this issue and get her to think of fruits and veggies as nice and yummy things to eat. i came across a booked called deceptively delicious where the author purées veggies and fruits and then adds them to recipes. i am going back and forth whether i should give it a shot. though i worry about hiding all the good stuff- will she ever get used to eating them?

thanks for the reply. i know the 'garbage' issue is the more important one. my husband and i have always been careful around her with our eating habits, and i have even tried to make other adults around her follow my rules.;) some may say i go a little overboard, but i know how impressionable kids are. as far as i can guess, my daughter picked this habit up from kids around her. i'm going to give ur suggestion of her helping choose what fruit she gets a shot. though i blv she'll do exactly as ur son does.

my 2 yr old daughter down right refuses to eat any fruits. unless the veggie is cooked to beyond a recognition and its taste covered by other factors she wont go anywhere near it. :( as a baby and even after she was a yr old, she loved fruits with apples, bananas, and grapes as some of her favourites. now she points to them and says 'garbage!'. i am running out of ideas on how i can get her to eat them. i have tried fresh juices, smoothies, sneaking them in, etc. i'm very worried abt her getting the right nutrition and setting up healthy eating habits.

My family and I came over in 1988. I was 5years old. I will always remember how my uncle took us straight off the plane to Al Ghurair Center at 9pm. He so wanted us to like it here and wanted to show my parents how civilised Dubai was. :) For the first 6months we lived in a hotel on the Deira Creek- my mom wasn't too happy about Dubai and she thought that not getting a place meant the move wasnt permenant.;) Eventually she came to love it, as we all did. Life was so simple- only one shopping mall (Al Ghurair), one kids' play area (Sindibad @ Al Ghurair), and the best beaches (Jumeriah Beach Park). Anywhere after Jumeirah was too far-never could convince my dad to take us to chicago beach:(. the fruits and vegetables market were a fantastic adventure, as were the Gold and Spice souks. Public parks were our playgrounds, and my parents never shied away from going to them- even in the heat of summer. U name the park and i've been there;).

I went last Friday with a group of four friends for breakfast. It was packed! We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated and our food was over 45 minutes late. When we finally managed to get a waiter to notice us, he told us that orders were backed up as the place was so busy. In fact they closed one section of the restaurant to help catch up with the orders. We saw 4-5 people complaining about their orders and slow service. Our bill of 3 breakfasts, 4 coffees, and 2 cakes came up to 350dhs so I'd definitely put it up on the high end of cafes in Dubai. As for the food it was ok- nothing different from what is already available in Dubai. Yes the atmosphere is what attract you and makes you want to stay, but if they want to maintain their customers they are going to have to work on their food and service. edited by nadiarikhaimi on 30/09/2011
