ccdoha - my DH and I visited Cairo/Giza for 1 week in February, we left only 5 days before the riots broke out. In the 1 week we were there we visited Memphis, the Sakarra, the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, an Egyptian carpet making school, the Citadel Cathedral, a Papyrus paper Museum, perfume shop and the Egyptian Museum... we never did have the chance to cruise down the Nile and if we had more time we would have visited Luxor... but from the sounds of it the train you'll be taking would whisk you right through Luxor. We absolutely loved it our trip there. The locals are friendly and love to please... word of advice that nothing is for free... if someone offers you something or does something for you...expect to pay. The best advice I can give is book a tour guide! We looked through trip advisor and found an excellent guide. It's almost impossible to see all the major landmarks (Sphinx, Pyramids, Citadel, Memphis) if doing so on your own. Everything is so widely dispersed throughout Cairo, Giza and the countryside and while I wouldn't dare renting a car on my own. The tour guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you everywhere you want to go. Most if not all tour guides are "Egyptologists", who will give you the entire history of all landmarks. It really did make our trip that much more rewarding. Lastly, if you go to the Egyptian Museum, again rent a tour guide. There are absolutely no titles/descriptions for the artifacts and we spent most of our time wondering what we were looking at, so spend the $10 and get a tour guide :) HTH and enjoy your trip wherever you go!

MAC makes great products but their assistants here are hit and miss. Heads up that returning MAC products here can be a nightmare. I attempted to exchange an item that I purchased a day prior and the Manager told me I couldn't because I had sampled the product. (You can actually return/exchange used items to any MAC store according to their website). After 15 minutes of arguing with her she accepted the exchange but told me she would have to pay for the used item out of her own pocket... which I didn't care nor believe. I contacted MAC Canada and inquired about her allegation... which turned out to be bogus. I have even purchased MAC products here and exchanged them for the correct shade back in Canada, no receipt and not one question asked. In regards to knowledgeable assistants, since moving here i've actually learned to do the research myself and read makeup reviews. It saves alot of headache/questions when looking for a product. Makeup Alley is a great website that will give reviews and Sephora's website is good also. Happy shopping :)

Marycatherine, your comment made me laugh. I imagine you're talking about AC and couldn't agree more. Truly awful service! And good luck summer breeze.

Hi Desertrose, Unfortunately I can't suggest any agents or even quote the price of a 2/3 bedroom villa, however there are many threads on here that may help answer any questions. There are also a number of women that have moved from Dubai to Doha and imagine they would most certainly be able to give you some insight. Here are a few threads to look at regarding agents/apartments and general "Moving to Qatar" questions: http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=111710 http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=116462 http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=126358 http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=92220 http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=128784 http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=134337 Now that should keep you busy for awhile, there are plenty more on here too. Hope that helps!

Interesting bit of info HEF... only 250QR for the visa, entirely different from what I was told back in January. Just for clarification the "eye-ball scan" and stamping takes place upon arrival into DXB correct? So DebK which airline did you take over?

I went to Al Wakra Beach yesterday and wore a 2 piece, mind you I don't prance around and flaunt myself...I usually use my vehicle as a shield to block myself the "traffic" and I also only go with my husband. To be honest it's taken me awhile to get comfortable in a bathing suit there, there's been times where I'm 15 feet away from a veiled woman and wouldn't dare strip down to my bathing suit in front of her. But I have seen women in bathing suits numerous times and have never heard of any issues arising.

I hold a Canadian passport but reside in Doha... my husband and I attempted to travel to Dubai 3 days after the visa requirements/regulations changed and it was a mess! NO one knew what was going on, I spoke with numerous consulars from the UAE Embassy here, spoke directly to the Canadian Embassy in the UAE, spoke to Immigration at the Dubai Airport... which all deemed completely useless as half didn't even speak English. Finally put all my faith calling Canada directly for the facts. I called the UAE Embassy in Canada (based in Ottawa) and spoke directly to a Canadian consular. He explained that living in the GCC doesn't matter, if you hold a Canadian passport your going to face the same regulations as Canadian residing in Canada. The visa cost $250 CDN!!!... needless to say we scraped the Dubai trip. All the visa regulations are listed on the Canadian Voyage website, which I listed below. Also I encourage you to call the Embassy in Canada as they appeared to be the only one that could answer my questions correctly. Good Luck and keep us posted. http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/report_rapport-eng.asp?id=306000 http://www.uae-embassy.ae/Embassies/ca/Content/1173
