Very interesting overview of the classes ilovewine. I guess everybody is different and although I understand you find the classes extremely helpful I prefer to invest my money and time doing yoga and pilates. I feel that the exercises I am doing are going to be really useful for the delivery. In the classes you get the same kind of friends you do in your antenatal classes. Of course the more information the better, but I have the impression (from other new mums) that once in the delivery room it is a big Inshallah, so maybe you want a natural birth without drugs but if the doctor tells you that you need a c-section, that is you with no options. In the meantime my doctor is giving me all the info I need (included in the insurance and time I go to the check ups) and I am not fussy about meeting the nurses and doctors in advance. But this is just myself. The less time I spend in an hospital the better!

Hi there, I am 23 weeks and first time pregnant and I have almost decided I won't attend the antenatal classes. I am attending ante natal yoga and pilates instead and I am finding these classes much more useful for the delivery. I don't think there is anything you cannot find in a good website or a good book plus I hate the idea of attending theory classes after work/at the weekends. Also somebody told me that in the American Hospital classes, the last sessions are delivered by marketing people from the umbilical cord storage and to be honest there is no way I am going to pay a penny for a salesman trying to sell me more stuff. This is only my opinion....

Dear Jess UK, my husband works in Dubai in the waste management industry for a British company. If you leave here an email I will pass it onto my husband and he will be able to give your hubby some advise regards jobs. There are very few people in the Gulf with Waste Management experience (specially good experience from the UK) so hopefully my husband can direct yours in the right direction.

I also hate cocoa butter's smell. I bought pregnacare cream in Boots- is in the pricey side, but it working fine so far. I have recently read in Babycenter that there is not scientifically proved that you will avoid stretch marks with special lotions - what you should do is to moisturise your skin. I use a combination of pregnacare for bump and breasts and the of the body I use Dove for dry skin.

I have had several diarrhoeas since I got pregnant and I just waited and drank a lot of water, lemon juice and gatorade. Doctor did not give it any importance, apparently it can be normal. Eat only rice and bananas tomorrow and you will be fine. I would not take any imodium or anything like that as you really need to get rid all the bad stuff you have inside. Imodium might make you constipated, and you dont want.

I flu with Fly Dubai last month when I was 18 weeks and they asked for a medical report. I was showing a bit and I did not have it and I promised the Fly Dubai staff that I was only 18 weeks so finally they let me in. However it was a very stressful experience so I won't do it again. Take your medical certificate and you will be in the safe side!

Somebody told me the other day that I don't need to buy the thing you put in the car and the you attach the seat to it as apparently all the push chairs that can be used as a car seat can be attached to the car using the seat belts - is that right? I am travelling to two different cities abroad with a 3 months old baby and I need to carry the car seat/push chair and it would be extremely helpful if I can just attach the pram's seat to the seat belt - any advise on the brand I should be looking for? Thanks

I don't get this.. Are you saying that you don't work to the best of your ability because you feel you aren't paid enough to ? Although you could work harder or do a better job, you choose not to ?? Edited for cr@p punctuation lol edited by Sue62 on 12/11/2011 BINGO! That is exactly my situation. I see every day how the owners of the company make shiploads of money that they don't share with employees or re-invest in the company to provide a better quality to the customers. All the money goes straight to their pockets when we (employees) are lacking necessary things to deliver our job properly. How bother then? But, to be honest, me in this job not doing 100% is more than enough for them. Why am I still there? Because I need the money and I don't think in my sector UAE will offer me anything better.

Definitely, I only work what I am paid for. If they will pay me I would be more stimulated (stimulation grows proportionally to the pay rise!)

I'm afraid I cannot disagree more with the previous post. I would not send my kids to university in the UAE - they all are run for profit (and not for quality of teaching), they are small so students do not have the chance to meet a lot of lecturers and professors and the level is very low. Companies know all of these and nothing will look better in a CV than a degree in the UK or EEUU. Also the way that the society is structured in the UAE doesn't allow students to mature. I would prefer my children to go to a city in the UK to study and face the reality of life. Children are generally overprotected and spoiled here, and even if your children aren't, they will be surrounded by others who are so the sooner they leave the UAE the better for them.

What is the probability of the police knowing a maid is making extra AEDs in someone's house? In the time I have been here police have never been to my apartment and I almost every week get under my apartment door a hand written note from a maid offering her services.... Is it really a big risk or it is the same as other things in Dubai i.e. not having alcohol license, living with your boyfriend, etc. that a lot of people does and nothing happens? Just asking.

I'll be asking my doctor on Wednesday if this might be lack of iron, unfortunately all sources say that it is normal....

Go on holidays with your husband around when you are ovulating (ideally a week before and a week after). No alarm clocks, no mobile phones, tonnes of good food, loads of sleep and practise at least once per day. If that is too much, leave a day in between. The target is that you always have swimmers alive inside. When you are not practising or eating read a good book, watch a nice film or go for a walk, don't drink too much alcohol for dinner, just enough to enjoy your dinner. People are generally too stressed, do not get enough sleep nor practising enough. You need to enjoy yourself and both of you need to be relaxed. This is very difficult in our daily lives!

I live in JLT and be careful with the building you move in as there are massive differences between buildings (and also in prices, of course). Quality of the building materials, cleannesses and security/reception staff varies enormously from one tower to another. I have been myself in a lot of them and I would not recommend to live in the cheapest. I live in Green Lake Towers which are probably the best towers and I can assure quality, cleanliness and staff are great. It is in the expensive side thought. Having said that, I lived in Green Towers for 18 months now and there are a few things are going down in quality i.e. lack of soap in the health room showers, machines in the gym that are broken and they never get replaced and broken sauna for ages. I am in the same position as you as we want to move to a bigger flat (I'm pregnant) closer to my husband's job and we are looking and executive towers. AED 100,000 for a 3 bedroom is quite challenging (we have the same budget and if we are lucky we will end up in a two bedroom plus maid/studio). Hope this helps.

I have no idea (yet) about schools but I have a lot of experience working in the higher education sector in Dubai. It seems to be that children have to adapt to schools rather the other way around... knowing that the immense majority of education companies in Dubai run only for profit, this does not sound good to me. I understand the OP dilemma, but if all of us end up taking our children to the school when they are just 3 years old (instead when they are 5 years old, as it happens in the UK) schools are making an incredible amount of money (2 years more for each children of full fees) and it will make more difficult for everybody to get a place in the school at the rigt age (5 years old). If you feel your child is too young for school (and at 3 years old surely is) don't take him/her to the school. Just wait until is good for him/her. It annoys me that all these private companies have as a number 1 target to maximize benefits not taking into consideration the children's needs - this is wrong in so many ways!

Two men in Ibn Batuta taking photos of children sounds a little bit weird to me, but maybe they were just taking photos of the mall and it happens that your children was there. Having said that I think it is estrange. I travelled around Africa for half a year and whenever me and my partner arrived to a new village we were welcomed by a big group of children. We always took photos of the children and showed them afterwards the photos in the screen and they loved it. Even when adults (parents) were there they loved to pose for us and see themselves pictured in the camera screen. We have, literally, tonnes of photos with children from this trip. I posted some of the photos in my Facebook as this was an essential part of our experience in Africa, the welcoming to a new village surrounded by children. One of the photos is now framed in my living room; me and very cute girl from Mali who was with us for a few hours when visiting one of the villages. Photos were always under people's consent, but sometimes parents were not there. I don't think I did anything wrong, I was just playing with the children.

Hi ladies, Nice to hear you are doing well. I am also extremely tired, but I think I am getting better. I never had morning sickness, that is one of the reasons I put on 5 kgs in 15 weeks!!!! Is that too much? What about you, ladies? Fiona82, could you inspire me with some baby girl Scottish names, please? My hubby is from Glasgow and I would love to use a Scottish name. We have decided if baby is a boy, but a little bit lost if baby is a girl. My problem is that name needs to be easy to pronounce and spell in Spanish also, like Fiona ;) but more suggestions will be very much appreciated! TIA Edited to add: Regards cloths my mum bought last month all the baby cloths in Spain in the summer sales but here you can find some nice items too. I saw in Max they have very affordable cloths but maybe you will do better in Scotland.... although not for summer in you go in November! I don't know if I will attend ante natal classes - do you think are necessary????? Thanks again edited by Nimonemo on 08/10/2011

I guess it is a personal choice. I lived in the UK for 5 years and I had enough, I don´t think I will choose to come back there, honestly. It is a wonderful country to go on holidays, and I go every year for at least a month to visit my family and friends, but after a month I usually have enough. Too grey, too many people of the doll, taxes are too high and social services for middle class inexistent. I am going to deliver a baby in the American Hospital; I´ll have a room for myself and my husband will say with me. NHS works fine, but forget about these treats (which are quality of life!) Dubai is not great either but you choose in what you spend your money (instead of paying so much taxes). Once I deliver my baby we will be in a similar salary to the OP. AED 25,000 is enough to live here if you are wise. Having said that I wouldn´t have ever come to Dubai if they wouldn´t have offer us a much better package to the one we had back home. Unfortunately the UK is also suffering the crisis and I don´t think it is the place to be!

In the last year we have crossed the border around 7 times to camp in Oman. None of the times they have registered our car - they make you open the boot, they look inside for 2 seconds and then you can go. So place any items you don't want to be discovered inside a bag or in a cold box, but place these bags/cold box art the bottom of your boot with some other stuff on top and you will be more than fine. We always find Omani army/police in the border very nice and friendly. Enjoy!!!

Lived 5 years in Glasgow. Found a Glaswegian husband there and carrying a half Glaswegian baby at the moment! I had great 5 years in Glasgow - I love the city and I miss it a lot! Gorgeous parks, very nice buildings (I disagree with Jonners, I actually think Glasgow has very cheap accommodation!) and awesome people. Believe or not, I learnt my English there :) My family lives in the South Side, which is nice an well connected to city centre with buses and trains. I recommend you to look into Queens Park or Rutherglen, if looking for accommodation. Schools depends entirely on the area, private schools are expensive though. The only reason we moved out of the city was the weather. I found it incredibly depressing after 5 years. Summer (if you get summer at all) finish on August the 15th and it starts raining and windy and miserable weather until May next year. Last July I was in a wedding there ans the temperature was 12C during the day!

How do you feel? Are you experiencing any problems? If you feel good and don't have any problems I wouldn't worry - I find appointments with the Dr very useless to be honest. If you are having a normal pregnancy you don't need to see the Dr so often. Also, if there is something important you should know - results from your 12 weeks scan or blood test they would have phoned you by now - no news is usually good news! Having said that, if you still want an appointment, I recommend you phone again to the hospital and start saying you want to make a formal complain, you are a CUSTOMER paying for a very EXPENSIVE service, you need to speak to your supervisor NOW and all these carry on. It worked for me at American Hospital when I had an issue making an appointment and I got it exactly when I wanted

I cannot agree more with snekie... I am pregnant and I want to keep my social life. I can handle well not drinking, but the problem is that every single bar in Dubai is for smokers. Who goes form England to France for the day? My relatives in Scotland need to send their children to a private school because the government one is just not an option so they are paying taxes and a private school. When my kids are teenagers I will leave Dubai but I won´t necessarily go to the UK or Europe mainland - everything depends on how the countries overcome this massive recession. For the moment I feel extremely lucky I had the opportunity to come to Dubai as we are saving lots of money and have a lifestyle unthinkable in the UK or Europe.

Well, I work full time but I am still in my husband visa. How is this possible? Because my company is based on a free zone. I do get transport allowance, medical and flights home but only for myself, not for my husband. On the other hand, I get flights home and medical from my husband´s employer as when we moved here it was my husband who got the job and I was initially unemployed. His company knows I work full time but I still keep my benefits as it was part of the contract. In my opinion, everything depends who are you working for. My husband works for a British company that cares a lot for their employees and treat them in the same way they would be operating in the UK. On the other hand my company is ruled by people who are not from a Western country so they treat us in a way I was not used to. I would not come to Dubai unless your husband gets a very good job in a very good company which has very goos reputation.

Our only reason to come here was that the money they offered was double to what we were getting home. We are on our early 30´s, starting a family and already saving for retirement. Our only reason to stay here now is that we don´t think we will get our combine salary ever again in our lives, not even when we are 50 years old. UK and Europe are so f!!!!cked at the moment that it is not even worth to think on coming back. So yes our only reason to be here is money. Although once we are here we are enjoying a lot and making the most of it!

Yep, I have been today in H&M and everything was winter! I manage to buy a pair of black trousers for work which were not too warm. Max in Ibn Battuta Mall has the cheapest maternity cloths in Dubai. It is true that it is not the best quality, but as I am showing already at 9 weeks and I don't know how many new cloths I am going to need during the whole pregnancy (my intention is to work until delivery) so it works fine with me for shirts and t-shirts. Even in the no maternity section I bought "big" t-shirts that do the job. More suggestions are more than welcome!

Yes, you are right. Metro stopped in Business buy and they put on all the passengers in a bus which did all the loop around Dubai Mall. My husband asked the bus driver "are you going to stop in WTC metro station" and the bus driver said "yes sir". TBH, my husband was late for work and the bus driver lied to him.... I see everyday buses stopping in SZR to pick up people I don't really think all of these bus drivers are in danger to loose their jobs!

Quoting Dal Fry: "I told him all the reasons why I wasn't happy about it and again he said he could see my point but it really wasn't anything for me to worry about." Well, can he be panning a surprise for you? Properties in Thailand are not so expensive after all and maybe he is trying to organise a surprise. I know nothing about investments and my husband has some money in places that I don't know (I haven't been bothered to know). I would come back to Dubai to speak to him and you are always on time to return to the UK if you don't like what you see. 24 years is a looooooong marriage to finish it like that!
