i'm in green lakes, two bedroom, 1800sq ft, paying 92k (inc a/c), but these three buildings, the madina tower and the tamweel towers are known to have the highest rates. love my apt though, excellent facilities. we have friends over at mag214, they're paying 85k (without a/c), two bed, 1500sq ft also in saba tower, fully furnished two bed but small, i think about 1300 sq ft?, 75k also in lake terrace, one bed, 850sq ft, 50k (without a/c) Thanks so much for such a good info! Is your flat furnished? I also love Green Lakes, that why is expensive, because it is very good!

Ladies, is there any particular reason you are posting everything about your flats but not the price? I would be interested in prices, as I am already living in JLT and I think I am paying too much (75 k for 1 fully furnished bedroom flat) Do you think I will get a 2 bedroom for that price? Thanks

BTW one of the things would scare me the most if I would be raising children in the UK is how easy and cheap is to get dr_gs. Nimonemo - that is a worldwide issue. UAE, SA, UK; all the same. No so much in Madrid where I grew up. Impossible in UAE.... edited by Nimonemo on 09/05/2011

Pushed by feelings I dragged my husband to Spain in the middle of the worst economic crisis (22% unemployment rate). I had a good job there but he was teaching English. After 9 months I had to accept that his career as an engineer couldn´t not be put on hold for longer, so that is why we moved to Dubai. I ended up hating the UK. I loved the highlands up north in Scotland, but Glasgow was too much for me! So I understand 100% why you don´t want to come back to the UK. I have been recently asked by my husband if I want to come back to the UK and my immediate answer to him was no way. I don´t want to raise my children there, at least no in the big cities where the good jobs are. It is so difficult! Think what is best for your pocket and you child education. You will be able to retire in SA! We are not going to be able to choose where to live. That is life now.

I am also looking for a tower in JLT. Thanks ladies for all your comments. I would appreciate if you could share prices as well. Babyrat if you are visiting towers these days, could you share all the info with me, please? I will do the same, starting right now: I have been 1 year living in JLT, Green Lake Towers, Tower S1. Lovely building, nice and efficient staff, clean pool and gym. Sauna and steam room were out of service a couple of times, they fixed them. 1 BR, 100% furnished (we did not have to buy a fork!) 75K. That is why we are looking at other buildings as we think it is a little bit expensive. However, I don´t want to go backwards in quality, I have seen some dreadful apartments in other parts of town and after that I am only going to consider JLT or Downtown.

Media one next to Dubai Marina has one for dinner. I have been to the lunch time one and it was very cheap from all points of view - people go there to get drunk only, so that place is perfect if that is your target.

One I ended up in that market as I was walking around the area and I decided to go inside when I saw the signs. I spend there less than 2 minutes because it was very depressing. However, what do you expect in a country were some human beings are treated like animals? I have friends working in construction sites and the stories they tell me are extremely bad. Coming back to animal cruelty, last night I watched the film Food Inc and I am seriously considering to eat less meat. I have seen a lot of documentaries on the subject but this one is one of the best. Have you thought about where the cows in the UAE live? And the chickens? I tend to buy Al Ain diary but I have never seen a cow or a chicken around....

Well, I am from Spain and I speak loud. My mum does it and also my dad. In Spain we literally shout at each other in restaurants and bars, so the louder we speak the more attention we get. After years living abroad I learnt how to speak quietly, because I know that it might be consider rude to other cultures... In a country like Dubai, whit so many people (and some of them quite rude as well) we need to learn how to behave and to accept other ways - the other option is not to leave home!

There is nothing you can not buy here. We moved here with 20 kg suitcases each and rented a flat furnished with everything. We have only bought a few basic things and now we are moving into a new flat and it will be only one trip by car! Life is much easier if you are not attached to material things. Having said that, I miss photos and pictures to decorate the flat. That is the only thing I am going to bring back when I am on holidays at home.

My MIL barely put her hand in her pocket once last time she was here. She half-heartedly offered to give me 'her share' for dinner one night but given that she'd just refused to leave 60dhs tip for a 550dhs bill I paid and left 20dhs on the table, I refused. I told her she could spend it on drinks for herself and DH at the Rod Stewart concert the next night. On the night of the concert DH paid for the first round then she said she didn't want another one so he went back to the bar. He got her another one anyway and she complained it was the wrong drink. Then she said she was off to the loo and DH found her half an hour later in the VIP bar drinking the double she'd just bought herself. Then on her last night she insisted we went out for dinner. Bill came, 200dhs for three of us (no booze). She gets her purse out, I almost faint. She says, "I'm not letting you pay for this, you're not paying for me, I want to pay my share". And hands over 50dhs. I'm cr4p at maths but even I know that doesn't add up. And I didn't get so much as a thank-you for my hospitality. Just curious - what does your husband think about it?

Since we move into Dubai we had visitors every month. As soon as our friends and family realised they had accommodation for free in Dubai, we have been fully booked. I always go to the airport to pick them up but also I always expect everything to be paid at 50%. I do not let them to buy food for the fridge but I we do a take away I let them pay. It is true that some of them have been a little bit tight, but they brought enough wine and jamon to justify it. My mum has been twice and I do pay for absolutely everything she does, eat or drinks - my parents are retired now and their pension is just OK - She keeps on trying paying but I dont let her, I always tell her, at least while I am in Dubai and I don´t have children, let me give you back a little bit! I don´t know what my husband thinks about it, though!

Apparently if we move every month an amount we do not need to put some much to start with - but you compromise yourself to transfer every month a certain amount... Also they said that they will give us 2 credit cards and 2 debit cards to use in Euros and Pounds without any charge and we can take the money out if we tell them 15 days in advance. So everything are advantages, that is why it makes me think that they are hiding something....

They bought a villa as an investment while they were renting a bigger villa in a nicer area (they were making serious money) but the villa they bought reduced its value a lot and they had to move into the villa they bought as it was crazy to be paying a mortgage for a higher value plus rent. They are a family of 5 so the villa they bought is small for them, but they cannot really do anything else at the moment. Now they are losing money with the mortgage!

We own a flat in Scotland, in the city of Glasgow, and the return of investment is quite good. Nothing similar to near London, of course, but the flat was very cheap. I have friends here that bought villas in Dubai before the crash and they have regretted so much. But obviously everyone has their own story. We have never considered to buy in the USA as we know nothing about it and seems too far away, but I know that countries in Latin America are cheap and they will get more expensive as their economies are growing (Brazil for example) but we are not so keen as the risk is very high. It is so difficult when you are not there! We are thinking in putting the money away in one of the tax free areas in the UK until we make our minds out. It is sooooo difficult to invest the money now. My husband has been into it for the last 3 months and he is so unsure.

Why do you want to buy in a place that you don´t know? (Just curious) I am very interested in your topic as I might be doing something similar... And I have the same problems. I am from Spain and I am waiting for the prices to go down there. Crisis has been for a while now but only areas that are not very good have decreased their value; Madrid, Barcelona and nice places by the Mediterranean are still incredibly overpriced. But everybody is waiting for the big crush. Here in Dubai as we are considering staying in the long term (10 years) to buy a Villa will save us the rent (we will be paying a mortgage though) but my husband is not so keen for the reasons stated by Ashleigh. As per the UK we already own a flat there (not in London) so we would like to diversify our options. But what it is true is that in the UK you get more for your money, specially if you rent the property. I mean, flats are not very expensive and everybody rents. In Spain, for example, flat are super expensive and nobody rents.... I would be interested in reading other opinions... Thanks for sharing!

Madinat Jumeirah is nice because you can have a beer with your meal but you are right everything is overpriced - tourist prices! However, the Chili Crab festival since it is in the street and it is not a restaurant should have more reasonable prices. I would not have paid more than AED30 for what I had for dinner last night, and they charged AED80. The more I think about it the more stupid I feel!

I absolutely loved the cities in Morocco, specially Fez, Tetuan and Marrakech. This last one is too touristic, but if you are going with children maybe better. I also loved Sidi Ifni, which has an amazing beach just before you arrive to the town. Morocco is huge, though, so you should star to narrow down the area you are going to visit. Perhaps a resort by the beach in Essaouira is your best option. Locals can be very persistent, specially with Western ladies, so be careful if you are walking around on your own and dress modestly. edited by Nimonemo on 12/04/2011

In this forum I usually read threads about maids, hairdressers, pedicures, weekends away in expensive resorts and so on. That is why I am astonished about the pennies thing. Sorry I did not want to dismiss anybody, it is just to show my surprise. I still think that if we are here having a reasonably good expat live we cannot really compare with anybody coming from a developing country. But this is just my opinion. I cannot afford a flat in Scotland nor Spain at the moment but I feel that I am incredibly lucky that I can choose to be here and I really feel that I am a millionaire in comparison with the majority of the people in the world. Supermarkets will still make their money by raising the prices 0.08GBP so I still do not see the point. However, I did not want to sound rude so I apologise. Good night! edited by Nimonemo on 11/04/2011

BTW I think Nimeno must be a millionaire. I am thinking of asking her to come along when I take my grocery list to Spinneys. If she doesnt care about her money, maybe she can share her pennies with me! AND ME! :) If you live in Dubai and shop in Spinneys and you think you are not a millionaire you are mental and do not realise how lucky you are. Ok, if shops are getting the pennies I understand your point, bu who cares when you are paying AED50 for Spanish strawberries, seriourly, I do not understand your point at all!

As for the idea that everyone has different stories and some need it more than others, I'm sorry, but it doesn't hold much water for me. The scale is different, but our plights are often similar. Even being here, DH and I don't have the money to buy our own house in the UK - we're saving for it too, just like the low-paid chaps who're sending their money home. You are not talking serious here.

I do not understand your post, even if as you say "over the years adds up quite a large amount" I am sure the guy in the florist shop need it more than me. You are a very generous person. AED 5-10-20!!! Regardless of the amount, it doesn't go to the cashier, it goes into the pockets of the owners. I am not generous, I am aware how lucky I am. My tips go to the person, the pennies I don´t even mind.

It is called stealing and it should be left up to the individual person whether they want to leave people a tip or not No, I think you are missing the point totally. It is not stealing at all! The salaries differences in this country are huge and there are a lot of people far from their childen and wives-husbands. Of course they are going to try to get even the samllest penny to send it back home. I earn too much money to be bothered about this, seriously, you must be kidding.

If you don´t let your teenagers to take a taxi or public transport freely when they are in Dubai (in my opinion much safer than any big city in Europe) how are they going to cope in a few years when they are in "the real world" on their own in a new city with new people? How are they going to be able to pay their bills, ask for a student loan or even buy organize theirselves for an exam? Some young adults (18-21 years old) in this country behave as if everybody would be at their service all the time and some young ladies think they are princess - How are they going to cope, for example, with their first “real” boyfriend? I have been working with young adults both in the UK and UAE and believe me, young adults in UAE are like 15 years old in Europe. If you are going to send your children to Europe to get University education (something that I strongly recommend) they need to be ready for the real world. Due to the lifestyle children in Dubai are spoiled and overprotected, they don´t have access to real hazards here (i.e. alcohol, drugs and s_x widley available) so to be honest, I don´t know how some of these young adults I work with would survive in a real dangerous situation on their own! Again, taxis are safe in Dubai, public transport is safe in Dubai and yeah, maybe there are some dodgy individuals but your daughters need to learn how to avoid or face these people. When I was a teenager in Europe I had a couple of scary situations with depraved men and I was able to overcome the situations by myself (mobile phones where no so widely available then). Unfortunately it is something that we all ladies need to learn. The sooner we learn it by ourselves the better and no, you won´t be able to be always there to protect them. I am just giving my opinion because sometimes, in my job, it is difficult to believe how naïf and underprepared for the real world my students are. Honestly, I do not think some of them will get a job any time soon. And the reason some of them are like these is because they are overprotected.

I am astonished reading this tread. I do not have children yet but I work with young adults (18-21 years old) who have grown up in Dubai and now I understand why they are so immature. If you leave these young adults alone in a city like Manchester or Glasgow they will be in all sorts of trouble! Dubai is the safest place I have ever lived. I usually go out at nights on my own (wearing western cloths) and I have never had any problem with anybody. I do not recognize the place you are describing at all! Seriously, leave your children behave normally, you cannot imagine how incapable are young adults in this country in comparison with kids who were raised in other UK and European cities. Your fear is only going to make your children unsecured and spoiled and they have to be ready to face the real world as soon as they go to uni outside the UAE or work.
