I so understand where you are right now and my heart goes out to you, I have suffered since age17 and don't wish it on anybody. Be careful of home remedy massages ,they can sometimes do more harm than good.A lot of them actually bruise the injury as they can't 'feel' the injury and know just how much pressure to apply. My son is a therapist and he always insists that I use both heat and cold therapy and won't let me near massage machines as I have a boney protruding spine, used one once and was in chronic pain after. The main issue is to control the pain and aid the healing process,so that you can get on with life. You are wise to get another opinion. Personally I swear by Physio/osteopaths as they can help with healing an injury and help you minimize future injuries, by strengthening the relevant muscles and giving prevention tips. Hopefully you will get relief soon.

This is just tragic...as if these folk don't have enough to deal with. As an aside there has been a recent outbreak of measles in Southern Alberta...seems these outbreaks are on the increase world wide ,sad thing is it is all preventable.

JoyceB you are so lucky were able to rescueyour MIL/DIL relationship.......mine ,among other numerous things, had my house sterilized while I was in hospital having DS1, she felt my cats spread germs! I had a wonderful maid helping at the time and she kept the place spotless....... Thank goodness my DH put his foot down right away.I was so mad it effected me so badly my mom made the comment ' it frightened her milk away '. We never had a relationship, so sad such missed opportunities all because she was right and that was it......taught me a good lesson on how to treat my DIL....;) She comes to me for advice when she can't get hold of her mom or doesn't agree with what her mom has told her about Gkids issues....couldn't ask for more. edited by Nomad on 30/10/2013 edited by Nomad on 30/10/2013

I too sympathize ,there is nothing more painful. I suffer from spinal stenosis, bulging discs and sciatica. While in DXB I used the osteopaths in Mirdiff Center, sorry forget the name, they were amazing and honestly kept me going. Once I returned to Canada I have been having corticosteroids injected every 6 months and they have changed my life. Not saying that it would be appropriate for your condition but as others have said avoid surgery at all costs esp in DXB where they are quite happy to cut first and then work from there. Just to add when my injections starts to wear off after 6 mths I pop 2 Aleve a day and they do really take the edge off until I get my next round of shots. The other stronger stuff does a number on my tummy. Hope you get some relief soon.

Not many people would consider taking in, feeding or trying to rehome rats if they dropped a litter in your backyard. Feral cats are vermin and there is nothing wrong in calling pest control to remove. My child contracted toxoplasmosis from feral cat poop in our playground sand-pit and we called the municipality who trapped and removed lots of manky cats. It bothers me most when people feed them like pets but take no other responsibilities and ****** off each summer leaving them to suffer as they have not had to fend for themselves . Just to add to the 'cats are vermin' part of your post.....a bit of a google search into the history of the Plague that afflicted a large part of Europe. Said plague took hold at a time when healers were burned as witches... what did these healers have, cats...they too were burned ,result.....the rats took over carrying the fleas that caused the plague. As BUK said I too have seen rats that are as big as cats in a neighbours BBQ's and around garbage bins, that's why the bin kitties should be recognized for their contribution in keeping the real vermin at bay. Many years back we lived in a recently developed farming area and the mice invaded us.My cats were still en route from overseas and I had a toddler who came in contact with mice faeces. He was in hospital for three weeks as he had contracted shugela dysentery and we very nearly lost the battle but thankfully he pulled through. While he was in hospital we adopted two rescues and in no time the mice were gone. Cats are not vermin ,the problem with the feral/stray cats in this region is caused by humans lack of concern.

The problem is people expect volunteers from rescue groups here to waltz in remove the cats that are in their way and not have to lift a finger or take an ounce of responsibility. People want something doing 'humanely' so they don't have the guilt at shipping these cats off to certain horrific death at municipality but don't want any involvement. I've heard them all...Oh I'm sorry I've seen a cat with its leg hanging off in the street but can't possibly take it home but I can't just leave it, can you take it instead!...Er well can you perhaps contribute to the medical treatment and or boarding since we have ZERO funds or foster hones available....No I'm sorry I can't but I just couldn't leave it there to suffer....Pfftttt thanks for that! These groups get NO government support here, there are no premises like the RSPCA and other shelters they rely on kind hearted people to take the time and put their hand in their pocket and pay themselves to temporarily home, feed and provide medical treatment for these animals until a permanent home can be found. Perhaps if you're worried about cats multiplying contact a rescue organisation who can help have cat sterilised at reduced rates for you. I appreciate that not all people like cats and you might not want them on your kids toys or garden items but a hose works pretty well to scare them off and they'll keep their distance. If you keep moving them on, new ones will just keep on moving in. It's better to have a healthy sterilised stray that lurks as the 'territory' is then taken. Daisy16, Bin Kitty, JA Cats and FF all let people put cats into adoption days so I don't know how you can say they won't help rehome, people just have to make a bit of effort too. Now where is that darn *LIKE* button !!!!!:) Well said BUK not many know just how much work all those who volunteer do and with so little help and support.

Feline Friends, bin Kitty collective and many other animal welfare organizations are VOLUNTEER organizations, they don't have office staff to remind them of the days and dates feral cats are due to be Sterilized. If these feral cats are still a problem these same organizations would offer all the assistance they could to TNR the cats.contacting the municipality won't solve the problem.......they will just be replaced by other stray/feral cats. The TNR programme is the way to go as these cats tend to defend their territory and keep interlopers away. Spring is breeding season so if you catch the offenders and neuter them ASAP there will be a lot less kittens born in your area next season.;)

We'd love a golden English cocker spaniel. Thanks for the info Nomad. Please also research the breed,I know some of the spaniel breeds do have genetic issues: King Charles Spaniel's can be have Syringomyelia a section of the skull is too small and crowds the brain.A very painful and cruel disease giving the animal severe headaches. The Springer Spaniel suffer from eye problems and ear infections, think carefully before bringing them to such a hot climate which could exacerbate the ear problem. That being said they are wonderful dogs and if worked and exercised properly they are great dogs. As I said research is the key as it is a life long commitment and if you are going to the trouble of sourcing an ethical breeder etc and the costs of importing ,always best to be 100% sure of all it involves. Good luck finding your new family member. edited by Nomad on 28/10/2013

Some may not agree but I use a water spray bottle. The idea is to let them know what they are allowed to do and what they not, jumping up on counters and tables is not good behaviour . A quick spray of water gives them quite a jolt and and makes them think twice about where they can and can't jump up. As GE suggested larger stones at the base of pot plants works a treat. By the way they are just adorable.........:) We tried that with a very noisy cat we had, used to wake us up all hours of the night. Only one problem, he decided he liked to play with the spray :) edited by Geordie expat on 27/10/2013 LOL I know ....you do get the odd moggie who loves water, I have a 20 yr old Arabian Mau who loves to jump in the bath and swim......!

Nomad, if I were a ruler your post would make me really happy. The Bridget Jones, 'just as you are' effect. :) I think Dubai was beautiful 10 years ago. When Hard Rock was in the middle of no where, when you could stand near where the police college is and have nothing but sand between you and the Burj AA..when Deira City Centre was 'the place' to shop. But if they'd stopped then there never would have been a snow slope, the worlds tallest tower, JBR, Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall... Many brands never would have come. Many jobs never would have been created. This expansion opened the gate for the lower income earners as there was now 'affordable' housing, and with this came more brands, more demands for the new demographic. And anything more will change what you define as Dubai. I predict further emphasis on the brand of luxury, elite-ism, superficiality, wonderful sights... And for those missing culture, take a flight, a catamaran, a drive to RAK, to Fujeirah... The balance between company income and salaries will be very off balance. More affordable workers will be hired. Effectively, it will become the dream destination, it will be 'home', to the modern Arabs of, say, Lebanon. With a Bollywood streak. There's talk of permanent residency visas, wage brackets; none of which is sparked by paced growth. Because they are so young, they are trying to catch up with 200 years of historical building overnight. If it were my choice it'd go back. But, it's not. And, it won't. I complained when JBR was erected, saying it'd ruin that area. But, it still went up. Point being, we can't stop progress. It's better to say 'good luck with that', then organise your affairs based on the assumption it will go ahead. I know I'm already thinking of the future, wondering where I fit, and if I see I don't, I'll need to adjust my affairs. Hard and sad to think, but life is full of crossroads. Expo is coming: prepare yourself. (New multi meaning slogan :)). Granted take your points esp the elite-ism, you are right in the sense that I might have the 'Bridget Jones syndrome' ...;) I loved it just the way it was a much friendlier place. Don't get me wrong I am not anti progress but it must be sustainable and not like we saw happen in 2008, what is being put in place to stop this happening again.

We have been married 36 years and I can't imagine life without my DH. I nearly lost him 12 years ago to a brain haemorrhage and I was never more scared in my life. The early years of marriage are exciting and lots of chandelier swinging etc but as you get older, these feelings of heady romantic love settle into a more comfortable but deeper love. We have always made time for us as a couple and didn't make the "mistake" of putting our dearly loved children before everything else. Don't get me wrong, our children were well cared for, lots of fun days out and holidays, but they were made aware from an early age that mum and dad needed time to ourselves too and they spent many happy weekends and sleepovers with grandparents and trusted friends and other relatives. Ask yourself this, can you imagine life without your DH? If not, then make an effort to make more time as a couple. Having a family is not reason enough to neglect your relationship, which was there, long before the children were. :) Hi JoyceB ....what a lovely post,I feel very much the way you do after 37 years. My DH also had a bad turn ,brain aneurism, and I too could not imagine life without him.OP see from your last post that you have as you say ' had a kick up the ass '....LOL hopefully the next thing is a really romantic weekend away ;) edited by Nomad on 27/10/2013

Oh DR I had such a wonderful evening.....sat so close to her my kids spoilt me with surprise tickets. Needless to say when she hit those high notes I just howled in disbelief. Sarah was one of my moms favourites along with Bocelli and Mario Lanza so many of the songs tugged at the heart strings. Enjoy La Traviata.......:) Nomad, Mario Lanza was one of my mum's favourites too. I haven't heard his name is such a long time! Glad you had a wonderful evening. I think Kim first shot to fame with a s*x tape an ex boyfriend released but which may have been orchestrated by her mother. As a child mom took me to see one of the movies he made......black and white... I will never forget it,we had such a lovely day ,a trip on the train lunch at a really posh restaurant and then the movies...... The comment about the s3x tape doesn't surprise me at all !

It is recommended that even in a very warm climate to water at most twice a week. With regards the flowers you may find that without sunshine the bottom part of the plant will be a bit bare until it hits a point above the shade and then you may get it to flower .I had a few that were in the shade with straggely bottoms and a reasonable umbrella of leaves and flowers.

Am going to sack him, again! Sacked him once for not doing enough, now he is doing more but clearly not properly. He's a general compound maintenance chap rather than a trained gardener. Whilst on the subject of bougainvillea, our red ones, planted a few months ago, now have no flowers. I've read it could be overwatering, insufficient sun or possibly just not yet established. Our white flowered bougainvillea meanwhile are covered in blooms (different variety, not just in colour). Any gardeners out there know which explanation is most likely? It could be overwatering they really don't like it esp. if in a pot. Some do get a bit of shock when trans planted , they do really like sun between 6 and 8 hrs a day.A good fertilizer when first planted is a 0:10:10 mix they can be deficient in minerals, but generally do very well in DXB as they like a more salty soil. edited by Nomad on 22/10/2013

I've got the secateurs out and done precisely what you suggest NOmad. So plants (found 3 that have been butchered) should hopefully be fine. Do I need to tell gardener not to do that again? He told our maid it was fine when she picked him up on it. Honestly speaking in all my years gardening in the ME I rarely came across a 'gardener' who had really good gardening knowledge. Many are just brought in and given a job as a gardener. What I would do was physically go outside and work alongside said gardener and show him what I wanted done with a real threat of termination if he acted with asking me first. One guy many years back raised my secret garden at the bottom of the garden ,that had taken almost 10 years to grow in, to the ground. I just sobbed but he thought he was doing me a big favour by cleaning up !!! I know many don't have the time or inclination to go gardening but it is very much a hit or miss. Tell him under no circumstances to touch anything unless he gets the go ahead from you with ANYTHING in the garden, this worked for me. Hopefully your bougainvillea will come back healthy and happy and no worse of for having his head shaved.....;)

I Have mild scoliosis which was not diagnosed until I had an MRI in my late 40's. I was as healthy as a horse with slight back issues growing up but was always told ' growing pains '..... Being diagnosed early is the key and I must agree with Lolacat I would get her diagnosis/ severity confirmed at one of the top notch clinics as if you deal with it at an early age your results will be far better.I on the other hand am almost in a wheelchair with back issues, and many a doctor has said if it was caught earlier many of my issues would not have been as chronic as they are now. You are asking questions which is the best thing to do. All the best edited by Nomad on 12/10/2013

Honestly I would start on the net.....start with the breeders near to where you are located in the Uk or visit when you go home for vacations etc.Normally I would suggest the Kennel Club but of late I am not a fan as many of their breeders are in it for the money. Search under ethical breeders, they will only part with a pup when they are happy that: The puppy is healthy and old enough to leave its mom The puppy is going to a good home. A contract to spay/neuter is signed and carried out. You will be asked loads of questions. You can ask about sending the pup to DXB in your list of questions...... There was a poster earlier on this year I think who has been through the whole thing and went back home on holiday and picked up her puppy at the same time.Do a bit of search in the pet section under buying a puppy ,there are many threads dealing with this Hot Potato .......;);) Sorry I can't be of any more help but I am based back in Canada now. Just an observation here not wanting to get in the middle of anything..... When I first came to the Gulf many years back most of the shop assistants spoke a smattering of Arabic in fact it really impressed the heck out of me. BUT it was a very different place to what it is now, smaller less flashy. Personally I think DXB as it is now is a victim of its own success, the small considerate things are being pushed aside to accommodate growth and chase that $. edited by Nomad on 09/10/2013

Sorry in a bit of a rush but will try and cover it. Source an ethical breeder from a country that has stronger animal rights laws.I would steer away from any East Block countries which includes most of Euro Puppy breeders. There are NO legal breeders in DXB any offered for sale locally will be from backyard breeders or possibly nicked.... I would also stay away from the local pet shops as the documents are largely fudged re age of puppy and health. They come from puppy mills and it is all about the $ to be made and not about the animal. Finding an ethical breeder is the way to go( IMO )there are some on the board who have gone this route. If you would consider an older dog the rescue groups do from time to time have pedigree dogs that have been abandoned/lost and are up for adoption. You could of course also opt for a Hinz57 pup from K9 or one of the other rescue groups;)

I was so hoping that the original plans would be scrapped. So much of Old Dubai has gone, yes tourists come to see all the 'new' bigger ,better and taller buildings but there is still room to keep a gem like Safa Park .What DXB really needs is a NEW ZOO a really bigger and better one than the excuse they have now.

Ditto to the chair-pad things, and just the request face to face. We've had a few neighbours over the years though who have just refused. Or loved to wear clogs at 3am ;) And as for living in some apartments in Bur Dubai, where there is 'the sound' of a cricket bat being battered off the floor upstairs - yet you go up to speak to the neighbours and all is calm and serene in their house - just odd but apparently very common in these apartments?! Used to drive me round the bend. I've also been on the other side of the fence with a very bouncy child, but it's a good opportunity to teach them what are indoor noises and what are outdoor noises. I had the same issue as OP however not in DXB and many years back. In an old apartment building the lady above had 3 and 5 yr oldthat never got to play outside. They both ran up and down with moms high heels on. Went up to speak to her and introduce myself and got told off for my trouble. This went on for two years I bit my tongue feeling sorry for the kids, until the day I came out of hospital where I had spent2 weeks on a drip after nearly miscarrying due to severe morning sickness. I was just too ill to trek upstairs and ask her to PLEASE quiet her kids down and took the broom handle and kept on banging it on the roof. Well that evening when her OH got home ( my DH was away ) he came down stairs and proceeded to knock down my front door.I immediately phoned the police but luckily my neighbour on the other side heard the commotion and stopped him before he managed to break the door down. Once the police arrived and took him away it transpired that he was high and drunk and faced serious charges. I was rushed back into hospital and nearly miscarried again, luckily he is now a 6'2 dad himself. Consideration is the key and yes it is very difficult with little ones in an apartment but as TB said a good chance to remind kids of inside behaviour and outside behaviour. edited by Nomad on 03/10/2013 edited by Nomad on 03/10/2013

Please don't try and take it without a cage/carrier.....a scratch from a stray can be very painful !! And not too clean..... If it is completely tame and is an abandoned pet then get a pet carrier ( I am sure someone on the board can loan you one) if it is feral borrow a trap from Feline Friends or Bin Kitty Collective, they will show you how to operate it. I used to have a few pairs of oven gloves at the ready for these jobs :) It is great that you are taking the time to care.

By 'whole package' I meant are you adopting an outside cat. OK so you are keeping it semi feral which is fine,I would definitely take it yearly for vaccination and check ups at the vet,to maintain good health.

I think that firstly you must decide, are you going to take responsibility for the cat? ie are you feeding it regularly or is it bin diving. Will you be taking care of the cat if and when you move.Taking on an animal is a commitment for the rest of that animals life.......not just something for the kids to pet until they get tired of it like a toy. As was mentioned to you earlier it shouldn't just rest on the costs of vaccination it is the whole package. If it were me YES I would vaccinate, broken down over a year it works out at a few dirhams a month, for peace of mind. Get a check up done with the vaccination that way the vet can see if there is anything else you should be concerned about. edited by Nomad on 02/10/2013

Contact feline friends as they use good vets who give a discounted rate. Whilst i realize you are wanting to do the right thing please please don't base your criteria on who can do the cheapest job. TBH it is far better to euthanize a stray cat than have a poor spay done. So true and you don't have to have a microchip done with TNR programme through FF. ...'twas a vaccination question, not spaying? Sorry ;) just took my lead from LC instead of checking the whole thread properly...but contact FF anyhow to get the best rate not sure if you have to microchip for vaccinations at the vet if it is a stray.

Sorry for the thread hijacking, but there is a stray cat had started to pay me visits in the night, this boy have his left ear clipped, I do keep feeding him, as I want to adopt him, only tonight he allowed me to be near him, I was wondering is he going to allow me to let him in the house? or I should rent a trap? Thanks for any advice Hi Crux, If you are wanting to adopt this fella it would be wise to first trap him and take him to be checked over by the vet.Contact Feline Friend,Bin Kitty Collective or any of the Feline rescue organizations to loan you a trap. You can then get him his shots and a check up .At a later stage you can get him microchipped. Once you are back home with him I would not push the issue of taking him inside,it is more a case of you 'inviting' him in.Some feral/semi feral cats get very edgy being cooped up, they sometimes feel locked in.Take it slowly. Good luck and well done for saving this boy from the streets. edited by Nomad on 28/09/2013 edited by Nomad on 28/09/2013

This young offender business is just really too much. Just look at the two who tortured Jamie Bulger, they are now living among the general population with new names to boot. The punishment MUST fit the crime, agree with other posters,he should be put in with the general population and their own brand of justice. Prayers for the little mite, what a way to start your life.

This poor darling has been here for slightly over half a year I think. It can't understand why the neighbours (long gone) are not leaving it anymore food. But, it's seriously starting to annoy me as it's peeing at different spots marking its territory! Possibly it's bits are still intact, have you had a good look to see if in fact they have been removed?( that is if it is male). I have known some males that do still mark once they have been snipped though. This is a difficult one, I have been in the same situation soooooo many times. It is not in me to turn away so I have gone all out to domesticate and find a home for most of the abandoned strays that have adopted me. This is such a lesson to those who think they are helping by feeding strays. It should always be considered that DXB in many cases is not a permanent home and before you start feeding a stray have an action plan for when you leave or move houses. It is so very unfair to the animals as they become totally reliant and unable to fend for themselves. Sorry OP not having a go as you are the one left ' holding the baby' so to say. edited by Nomad on 25/09/2013

I think part of the moral of this post is that women are gradually being reduced to mere objects. It's not just a matter of if u don't like it, then stuff it...it's like a cancer, and very soon will affect all of us.--our daughters/nieces/granddaughters... Increasingly we see girls in videos wearing next to nothing or even nothing! while the men are so dressed up even with hats ..head to toe...Girls are gradually being taught that if you are not naked or lose, you won't find a guy.... We call for equal rights and respect, but we have not even shown ourselves respect. It starts with mothers, even within the small expat-woman circle, please be firm when your daughter puts on something inappropriate and explain that it just won't work. My two cents, and i'm quite happy that some schools have banned these songs...Would it stop students from downloading? NO! But then it puts across a message of supporting proper moral values, and that's what is important. ***LIKE***

We started feeding a very young stray in May and she is still with us. She has been sterilised, vaccinated - the whole works - she is very healthy and happy - plays with our dog and the kids love her. She does come in the house sometimes but she is essentially an outdoor cat. We have never owned a cat and so wondered if anyone else has an outdoor only cat? I have had so many over the years, lost count actually !! They are perfect to have as they will keep the rodent population down and other strays away that might want to move in. Just make sure there is someone to feed her when you go away and that she always has access to fresh water.

Sorry you are having to find a new home for your dog. Please be very sure who you adopt out to as there are many scam artists out there who will tell you the dog is going to a good home ,only to turn around and sell your dog onto an unknown future. Due diligence is always a good idea, possibly even visiting the new Home before deciding. Hope you find a good forever home.

Not in DXB anymore but when I fostered for them we used to ask for costs to help cover the spay/ neuter fee and cost of shots. The fee is also a commitment to the adoption, which to me was the most important aspect, it wasn't a set fee but on a case by case basis. Best to get hold of them by phone or email and I am sure they will get back to you promptly. So glad you are looking to adopt, all the very best.

There are a number of threads on here about this very subject, just put in a search buying puppies etc. As FD said there are NO authorized breeders of dogs/ cats in the UAE,they are only available form pet shops and these come from VERY questionable backgrounds.Generally from Eastern European countries with lax animal rights laws. If you are set on a particular breed then source one from an ethical breeder from a country that has strong animal rights laws.It has been done by a number of EW ladies, just search for the relevant threads. It is all very well for some to come down on others for suggesting a look at the animal rescue organizations before buying BUT it is a very sad fact that DXB is bursting at the seams with unwanted pets that get abandoned when they either grow up, start costing too much to keep, or their owner gets a quote to take the animal with them when they leave.Suddenly they are disposable.........thus there are any number of pure bred animals at the shelters for rehoming. @ hoot your argument of a pet adoption versus a child adoption is so way off here, in fact if pet ownership were in anyway the same we would have a lot less abandoned pets on the streets today
