Are her poos very loose.....my recent rescue had very runny stools and was also going every time we let her out. The vet suggested adding a few spoons of cooked pumpkin to her food.It did the trick. Watch her very closely though as it could be as Bean Sprout suggested any no of issues.

Wow, some of you are a harsh lot - let's summarise: suggest she needs medical help, give her a kick up the backside to help her with her demons, suggest to her to see a mental health person, don't get involved? Since when was it a crime not to have shoes on when you are in a bikini at the poolside? - all about a woman who *may* have some kind of medical condition which causes some of this and has nothing to do with alcohol. Surprised no one said " call the police to teach her a lesson" ! That is why honesty is the way to go here, one doesn't need to be ugly about it but as was suggested by AA make it light hearted then if it is a medical condition she will I am sure set the record straight.

Having lived the effects of alcohol abuse , my brother was killed by a drunk driver, I have pretty strong opinions. I know Op she did not get into a car, that time, but what is stopping her from driving drunk. What if she is walking across a busy road. I know it is just a suspicion on your part that there is booze in her flask but it seems explains her behaviour. I would really say something about it to her as AA says you can put it to her in a lighter way but you must say something. This must have bothered you significantly to ask for opinions on the forum. If it happens again please don't turn a blind eye. To TDB thanks for what you did, you might just have saved a life.... If someone had taken some action my brother might still be alive today.

Hi, K9 would expect you to contact them if the adoption has not gone as planned. Please get hold of them before there is an issue with the puppy biting someone. It is not fair to both the puppy and a potential new family until these issues have been resolved.I know of many cases when dogs have been returned and re homed in a more suitable situation. K9 will assess the puppy before finding a new home. HTH

mungomango I so feel your pain. We have recently adopted a rescue Dobie who had 5 foster homes between Jan and when we got her in July. She was a total mess poor thing didn't know which way was up. All she wanted was to please everyone but the separation anxiety was just awful.I have put an awful lot of work into getting her settled showing her constantly how much I love her. I know you don't have the luxury of being home with her, personally I doubt that a maid would be your answer. No slight on maids but those that genuinely know or understand pet care are few and far between. Have you considered doggy day care? She can learn to socialize with other dogs and maybe even get used to playing with others. Has your life in DXB changed drastically to the life you had back in Europe? Perhaps she had a bad experience on her trip over,it could be a number of things. I must agree with your husband that adopting her out is not the answer. There are so many abandoned and stray animals in DXB and putting one with issues into the ' system' is not fair to the potential new adopters. She may find herself back to square one with even more issues. Sorry I don't have any concrete advice for you but having dealt with many a problem pet( I am by no means a behavioural specialist just a committed animal lover ;) ) it is difficult to adjust this behaviour and it takes time to work out and understand the triggers. We are not using any medication as I found with one of my rescues he actually got worse on medication, maybe try her a day or two without medication and see how she does. HTH.

Thank you Kaydee. Hello Nomad, yes things went as well as could be expected. It was a lovely tribute to my brother who was a no frills say it as you see it man. The vicar knew him they seemingly went to the same pub. So that was nice that he could speak of him from personal experience. They played the first record my brother ever bought. Which happened to be " spirit in the sky" He played it over & over as he didn't have any others for a while :) . Just such a huge shock & so hard tto come to terms with. Thank you all again God bless Your brother sounds so much like my DH,we have known each other since we were kids...and 'spirit in the sky' man does that bring back memories. As you say very apt. It is so hard to cope with a sudden departure of a loved one ,you feel that so much has gone unsaid things that you still wanted to do. Will keep you and your family in my prayers, maybe one fine day you can visit in Canada. God Bless N

My parents used to listen to Supertramp, ELO and Elaine Page. I love Eminem and Metallica. Maybe music was a form of rebellion that I've never grown out of :D Oh that takes me back......my eldest still loves to play these he says it reminds him of his dads exercise regimes with music. Exactly, smell of the BBQ, fresh cut grass, and summer songs, aahh..nostalgia aint what it used to be :-)) LOL So true, the simple things in life that mean so much. Anything classical reminds me of Mom.....she would have her little radio on top of the fridge always tuned in to the local classical programmes. My youngest son still plays his and moms classical favourites blaring while driving his sports car windows down in summer. He always says just talking to Nan. Dad loved Elvis so our house was a bit of a strange mix. Funny how music and smells trigger memories isn't it.

I respect everyone's opinions however I can also see how bringing other atrocities into this can be seen as distasteful and crass. The same thing happened with the Boston bombings - suddenly everyone starts saying "what about XXX and what about YYY"? It is almost as if mourning or sympathising with American tragedies suddenly makes people angry and question all the other things going on in the world. Fact is, 9/11 started many wars, changed world security, shook civilisation to the core. It was a momentous, historical moment which we are all re-living here. The fact it happened in New York, the centre of business, progress, the economy, in a first world stable country was what was shocking. The Palestinian conflict has been rumbling on for 30 years and more! Not to say those loss of lives don't matter but from a journalistic point of view an unprovoked civilian terrorist attack causing over 2,300 deaths and toppling 2 of the world's tallest towers in one of the US' biggest cities makes huge news in a way that other tragedies doesn't. But let's not forget we have all been glued to the Syrian crisis of late. Increasing technology is helping to push these other tragedies to the forefront - the world is no longer closed to warfare going on worldwide due to social media. Look at the Joseph Kony movie for example. I do believe the entire world got behind the tsunami effort and reached out to the people across Asia to help. There is plenty of online commentary about the Iraq / Afghan wars so people can make their own minds up - we are no longer "fed" news but people are going out, finding it and filming it for themselves. Egypt launched an entire revolution based on Facebook let's not forget. Such a good post TDB.We now have the means to hear / see all sides from sources who are living it. Singarosa yes I agree we are all entitled to our own opinions but as Doubting Thomas said in reply to your first boo hoo post using this tradgedy to 'peddle your own opinion' may not be the best idea. Emotions run high ,as I said before my DH was operating into NY that day and I would never want to re live what I went through until I heard from him.I can't even begin to imagine how those who lost loved ones coped. Remembering this day does in no way diminish other tragic dates in history, in fact it gives us a chance to learn from history and hopefully think twice before making the same mistakes over and over. edited by Nomad on 12/09/2013

i think this i absolutely ridiculous advice. all the research says exactly what you have found. you are more likely to get toxoplasmosis from doing the gardening or eating unwashed vegetables! your obgyn sounds ill informed. my cat has not gone anywhere. i do not have toxoplasmosis. Spot on advice.......a girl I knew tested positive for toxoplasmosis and had no contact at all with any animals, she was severely allergic, never went near them. Her Obgyn said it was in all probability veggies. Such ill informed advice, get DH to do a bit of reading online for more balanced info. Frankly I had never heard of so much hype about this until I lived in the ME. It is possible to have a balance in life of animals and kids in fact their lives IMHO are far richer for it. To set DH mind at rest just don't go near the litter at all including the dust and all will be fine. All the best .

Personally I would def take the EK acc option, from experience. If once you have settled and get the lay of the land and you are still determined to 'go it alone' so to speak then opt out. I know of a case when someone tried to get back into co acc and it is just not allowed. A big plus going with co acc is you don't have to deal with landlords which is a big deal, just look at some of today's posts on LL's. All the best with your move. ETA Not sure of the furniture allowance offered but you could always opt out of the co furniture bring your own over ( personally would bring bring new mattresses as the ones in DXB are very expensive ) . By taking the allowance and furnishing yourself you can do it frugally and apply the balance elsewhere. edited by Nomad on 05/09/2013

Qldgal sorry you are so unhappy in Calgary. Yes it has been a very difficult summer the worst flooding in history and the resultant mozzies have been a nightmare, but please don't judge the city after one summer. The wide open blue skies and those gorgeous mountains are just breathtaking. We tried Vancouver but the constant overcast skies and damp did a number on my moods, Alberta is a better fit for me. November is a terrible time of the year to arrive heading straight into winter.Yes the winters are severe but that is the nature of the area we live in, I really battle but have learned to embrace it,I have no option. Now comparing the Deerfoot to SZR to my mind is impossible. I loved living in DXB and miss it terribly BUT never miss the driving, You never get people flashing their lights at you,yes a bit of tailgating but if you move over to the right you can quite comfortably carry on your journey without having someone flash their lights at you in the slower lanes!! The accident you were quoting...was it the pile up on the QE 2 this last winter? If so that one was because of a blizzard on the road to Edmonton, surely not Calgary's fault.I can remember many a pile up in DXB when there was heavy mist. However if you do have an accident here the pink slip will be given to the real guilty party !!!! If you are so unhappy in Calgary you really should make a move,it is a very what you see is what you get kind of place and yes oil and gas minded, but has a charm all it's own. edited by Nomad on 20/08/2013

Please Please before you buy from them do a bit of research about puppy mills ,MANY of them operate in the areas Euro get their puppies from ( Hungary being one)where there are lax animal rights laws. There are a no of threads on here regarding buying puppies from Pets Stores here that have been imported. If you really want to get a particular breed please source an ethical breeder from a country that has strict animal rights laws.It is do able and some have even found it to be cheaper than brining a Euro Puppy in with questionable parentage, age and health issues. Cant remember which thread it was but a few days back under pets a lady sourced an ethical breeder and got her pup sent over here and it was cheaper that the pet stores. You could also get hold of the rescue organizations here as they do have abandoned pure bred dogs from time to time. Always good to make an informed decision when buying animals. All the best. edited by Nomad on 15/08/2013

I would give K9 a call,I am a bit out of touch but seem to remember that there was a husky rescue in DXB. There is no way a husky should be left out in the summer, the only acceptable condition would be in an air conditioned kennel. Kudos to you for doing something about it.....this is animal cruelty, plain and simple.

Ugly, hideous things - especially worn with socks! Who does that? Canadians! Especially those living in more rural parts of the country, the university crowd and outdoorsy types (a large segment of Canada). Not the most attractive look, but it's super-comfy and you know the thing about fashion is that your eyes tend to get used to whatever the majority is wearing. So if that's plaid shirts, thick wool sweaters and birks + socks, then so be it, as long as it's warm and comfortable :) OMG do you have a picture of me?..:):):) In the winter outside I swop them for my fluffy lined wellies. edited by Nomad on 10/08/2013

Personally don't think many are harping on the fact of being a single parent but are just trying to give the facts. I would have been ever so grateful to have had a bit of a heads up when starting my expat travels 25+ years ago.Having said that the bits of info I was able to get I listened to.....didn't always use it but I took it into account when making decisions. Do a bit of research about about owing money and the fact that the law doesn't protect anyone against bankruptcy ....do a search on EW..there are loads of threads about the pros and cons of life in DXB. Personally I love DXB and still miss it but it can change very quickly if you hit hard times. All the best in your search.

No don't do it. Got stung when I first arrived here and bought a pug off Dubizzle for 4,000aed. Fell in love with the pup but loads of things didn't add up - the birth cert had been changed, the dog was filthy and had overgrown nails and fleas, he was walking funny as if he had been drugged, and was driven from Abu Dhabi. However, I went ahead and bought him anyway - 3 days later he keeled over dead from a heart condition, died frothing at the mouth in a taxi on the way to the vet. Heartbreaking. Only buy from a reputable pet shop - plenty of ladies on here can advise. Do not buy from an ad - it is illegal anyway. Better yet, go to K9 and rehome one of their many dogs - they often get pedigrees that are abandoned. Sorry TDB have to disagree on this one ,buying from a pet shop is just as dodgy, for all the reasons you have stated above. To OP please do a search on here regarding buying from Pet Shops in DXB. If you are set on getting a particular breed source an Ethical Breeder from a country that has stronger animal rights laws and import it yourself. Eastern European countries have lax laws and Puppy Mill breeding is the order of the day.Do a bit of research into Puppy Mills on Google....:( Most pet shops in the UAE get their puppies from these sources, however they will tell you anything they think you will want to hear. marycatherine made an excellent suggestion...there are many pure bred dogs abandoned in DXB every day, there are number of animal rescue organizations you could contact for more info.

You have tried with the etiquette,I would simply throw them back over the wall not up to you to collect their clippings and bag them.Their trees/shrubs their mess....possibly take a photo of the evidence before popping the clippings back over the wall. Our neighbours would hack anything down that would peek over the wall from our side, but in the spirit of 'garden etiquette' ( love your saying ) if it peeked over onto their side they had every right to hack it down. They would send their gardener over to us and ask to pick up their clippings. Neighbour on the other side had Damas giants that ultimately blocked pipes and damaged our wall......after much to and fro our LL had his LL have them removed, all the mess that landed on our side was cleaned up by their gardener. You have a valid reason for not wanting strange vegetation in your yard if it is Oleander this is really poisonous and can kill. edited by Nomad on 02/08/2013

These types of predators who target children need to be daughter with awareness. Making children aware that the wolf does wear Sherpa clothing. And then by naming and publicly shaming them when charged. They should then have a refistry of these people internationally. We will not stop them this generation as this generation are the adult victims who grew into predators from 'the safe days'. Also rember, in the old days, cameras weren't in everyone's pockets with images immediqtely available and with photoshop options. In the days, they would have been seen taking the photo and if not would have had to take it to a Kodak to get developed and then be caught or the police would have veen alerted. Until this changes, we, as parents, sisters, aunts, grandparents, are the police. It is our duty to say 'no, it is NOT what I want it to be, but yes, these risks ARE there, and by being tough on you, maybe we will decrease the predator population by 1% for the next generation'. And yes, continue policing the Internet for illegal ages in porn, and continue fighting the war against trafficking, and hopefully we may both curb future predators and save future victims. AmyAus a really good post,Thank You. I can remember my Mom telling me once,no you can't go down to a particular creek with your friends. There were 4 of us and we wanted to catch tadpoles. I was devastated and couldn't understand why. Her reply ' When I was a little girl I was down there with my brother sailing our little paper boats. My brother was out of sight following his boat and this really creepy man came out the bushes naked from the waist down. He tried to grab me and I screamed my head off......he got such a fright ran off and my older brother came running' This was in the 1920's. I truly believe these evil souls have been around since the dawn of time. However as you put it AA in today's world with communications ,cameras the Internet these animals are able to operate and network so easily. I was only 8 when I heard moms story but it made such an impression on me that I would always think before placing myself in a compromising situation. Yes to a certain extent we have to ' cotton wool ' our precious children however it is important that they know what is out there, how they must respond if confronted with these evil souls. edited by Nomad on 26/07/2013

As Nechou said ask any of the cat rescue groups for guidance. Most important is to make sure they have access to loads of water, feeding mom is also a good idea. I suspect that you will be advised ,once she has weaned her babies, to trap her and have her sterilized. The ideal situation would be to sterilize the whole family but almost impossible to track the babies and have them fixed in6 months.

I've been reading this thread with great interest and am sad to say, that I have never had these feelings of craving the need to have children - I've just never been very maternal. ..... I do envy those of you who want children and will do anything to have them, but it's not for every woman. And I really do feel sad at saying this. Why do you envy women who have something you don't want? Is it that society has made you feel like there is something wrong with you for not wanting them? I would say that although I don't for a second regret having children, and I am currently feeling the urge to have a third as I watch the baby days slip away again with my daughter nearly walking and talking in the blink of an eye, there would be an enormous freedom gained through choosing not to have children of your own. From the second you conceive you feel the weight of worry and responsibility of being a mother, and as evidenced by JoyceB's comment, it never ends, this is rewarding, but also keeps me awake at night sometimes, your mind now has new hells to imagine should any harm ever come to your children, its an incredible vulnerability that I guess is the price to pay for all that love. Enjoy your freedom FairyDust, don't feel sad about it! Such wise words KW.........you NEVER stop worrying about your children,no matter what age.

I would butter the paws before letting mine out the first few times. Literally rub the butter on the paws not great globs but like you rub cream on your own hands. What might work is a few ' helicopter ' walks.......I let them out with me hovering over guiding and making sure they get to know the area smells etc. After about a week of this familiarization I sat with them in the garden making sure they stayed in the boundaries ( a circus act I know ! ). Most important is to make sure the microchip info is up to date and if possible a collar with all your info ...in case he goes a wandering. If he stayed close to home in DXB chances are he will be OK in the new house. All the best

Now they are older and we are now all separated, living in different countries and I am now in Doha. Its just me and the four walls, hubby always at work, and when he isnt, he is so tired, we have no social life, no friends, I feel so isolated, so at this moment in time, I cant really say what my worth is....... Wish I was back in Dubai, life was so different to Doha. salsB I feel for you....I too have been separated from my children and grandchildren for years at a time. However I really have come to the conclusion that we find ourselves in the place we are meant to be.When I was so alone I tried to do the things that when I had to take care of everyone else would have seemed 'selfish'. Jay14, mrsb , and Maroosh lovely words. edited by Nomad on 12/07/2013

Correct it is part of the Aviation regulators laws governing the country you are flying into or out of. Having worked with assistance dogs I agree it is important to not push the boundaries. To me this sounds a bit like a tall story.....assistance dogs and handlers I have had the pleasure to work with are very respectful of others around them when bringing their dogs into unusual situations, have never heard of them running free in a cabin. So sad as it really makes things that more difficult for those who REALLY need their dogs in order to function in a able world. Have had many a falcon as a passenger , just love it when their covered heads turn to the side as if to say 'who the heck are you' ! edited by Nomad on 10/07/2013

Didn't sleep much last night as I had a nightmare about a plane crash. It looks like the plane held up well and glad to see so many survived. DH often said the 777 was built ' like a tank '...seems he was right. edited by Nomad on 07/07/2013

looperdxb thanks for sharing......I still have nightmares of the puppy mill rescue I helped with:'( it was just heartbreaking. PLEASE PLEASE if you are considering buying a puppy.... watch this video. As I always say if you are after getting a particular breed source an ethical breeder from a country with stronger animal cruelty laws.Do loads of research about genetic disorders your choice of breed carries etc. A new trend is cross breeding to introduce new genes which produces a 'new' breed although not recognized by kennel clubs.

Way you could possibly do is supplemental feeding like others do with the bin kitties ,away from the house, if you don't want to encourage them around your house.

Your best bet is to try Feline Friends or any of the other Kitty charities.Leave a message asking for advice on how best to deal with the situation. In my opinion yes the mother cannot be sterilized yet as the little ones still need her milk so supplemental feeding of mom will really help (with loads of water).Ideally mom should be fixed when the babies are weaned, if you just go ahead now there is a greater risk of Mastitis and this is terribly painful. Truly hope the 'Cat ladies' who might have connections to these charities can give you a bit more advice in dealing with this little family. edited by Nomad on 30/06/2013

Yes we are fine on high ground but the damage is devastating for those on the flood plains. What is amazing to see is the people who are turning up to help.Damage estimated at $ 1 billion... Love the title 'Golden Girls' LT .....I feel more and more like Rose as I get older !!! edited by Nomad on 27/06/2013 ETA corrected the numbers for flood damage..... edited by Nomad on 28/06/2013

Hi Neamhi not sure but the last post I made was to SueB chatting about the floods in Alberta, woke up the next morning and the entire thread was gone....Maybe it was because we were chatting about getting together ( all the old girls getting together for a cuppa ;) ) Anyhow I hope that the discussion we were having has struck a cord with at least someone. By the way how are you ? edited by Nomad on 26/06/2013
