Contact K9 ASAP...they are very good and will advise you on where to go from here. The biting could be for a number of reasons , we could all speculate on the whys and where fors best to get it sorted through them.

OP it is a massive change I know, I went through it,not being native to Canada and the weather the winter was a huge challenge for me too. I have come to really love my 'new' home passionately and have even learnt to enjoy winter. There is nothing like Christmas in the snow.....the fire going inside everyone bustling about in the snow at shopping centres, the preparation of all the foods the various markets...even if it is not part of your beliefs you can still get caught up in the Festivities. Summer on the prairies is wonderful the wide open blue skies the rolling fields just outside of the city, the wonderful parks in the cities ALL the festivals and summer activities. I would strongly suggest you register with New Immigrant Groups in your area as it is such a help to mix with those who are facing the same challenges you are. Today I heard my first Robin which to me means get your butt out into the garden, summer is on the way........!!!! My hands are just itching to get stuck in. Moving to Canada at the back end of the winter is not easy. Most of the Prairies is still an ugly shade of brown under the snow but when summer kicks in it is truly beautiful. Do as much as you can outdoors in the summer and your spirits will lift I promise.... As some have said no two winters are alike we have some that have been quite brown instead of white .. All the very best to you and your family.:) edited by Nomad on 30/03/2013

Sorry on the run....give Feline Friends,Friends of Animals,Bin Kitty Collective each a call.Sounds like these poor souls need help. What I would do is offer to help trap them and get them into a vet ASAP ( possibly when you return from Easter ) with their help. Really good of you to help as they sound in a really bad way.

Sorry about your situation.I would say don't do anything in a rush, even if you would like to chuck it out of the window !! (Know someone who did and so regretted it later when she had calmed down ). When advertising don't say broken engagement blah blah as It might put some buyers off. Hope things work out for you, take care.

I suppose it is all relative. I grew up with very little in the way of excess, one set of 'good' clothes a few bits of play clothes and a school uniform, a new toothbrush when the old one was done for.You squeezed every morsel out of the TP tube from the bottom......I know this would drive some mad but my mom would say 'waste not want not '. We have become a very oh just turf it out society but there are those who can't afford to just turf it out, what are they to do ?

I have been helping my friend find a dog and it makes me crazy you find one on Dubizzle send a SMS then they want x amount, ie a lovely poodle they wanted 8k for her... So annoying!! I can't Tell you how many times I report the add but give Dubizle there due they remove the ad straight away... I know......my husband called it my part time job. When I had free time I would reply to ads to see if they were legit.Put many a spoke in the works for some low lives. londonlady my post was in response to bumbles mentioning how many times she had contacted Dubizzle about scam adverts for dogs. I jokingly replied that my husband used to refer to it as my 'part time job'. The animal rescue adverts are worded in a way that you know exactly who was adopting out the animal. What I would do was search out those that looked dodgy and follow up with an email and the minute they came back to me offering to sell the dog/cat I reported it to management. The ad was then removed. No one is having a go at the rescue organizations I for one was a foster parent to many Feline Friends rescues. Nomad, I perfectly understand no one is 'having a go' at rescue organisations - my main point is that a posting is being encouraged for breeders, and gain, I reiterate that whilst some points are relevant, breeders should not be encouraged in any respect due to no regulations being implemented or even or followed through, point blank. All organisations highly discourage breeders - it's a well known fact. edited by londonlady2212 on 23/03/2013 Please look back at my relevant postings and threads over the last few years re breeding as opposed to rescuing.Lets leave it at that shall we.

The perfect ending would be for the dog to be confiscated. If the animal abuse laws had any teeth this would be possible. Every time this subject comes up on here you will get some saying that they know of so and so or my dog I bought is fine, or I saw pictures of where my dog came from blah blah blah. As long as there is a market it won't stop end of. One can only imagine what this poor soul has gone through and continues to suffer,it is heartbreaking and so very hard to walk away.:'( Hopefully K9 can give a bit of direction.

A story that my husband told me was the inspiration of a well known charity that helps youngsters achieve their goals, ambitions and dreams to be educated and so forth - Many years ago, a man was walking his dog along a South African beach. He then came across a sole lady trying to throw starfish, one by one, back into the sea that had been washed up in their hundreds. The man watched for a few minutes then approached the woman stating 'you cannot save all of them' - the lady then bent down, picked up one more starfish, then promptly threw it back into the sea. Se looked at the man then said 'l have just saved that one'...... Love it !!!!

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” Mahatma Gandhi edited by PetitPapillon on 22/03/2013 Sad affairs that no nation in this world is worthy of the above statement. I have always loved this saying by Gandhi and have carried it with me always. As in many things in life you can't judge an entire nation by a few bad eggs. In certain parts of the world animal cruelty is more 'acceptable' and not policed as vigorously as in others. In my travels I have found that in most cases it is lack of education and understanding coupled with extreme poverty in some cases. I have seen such miracles when a subsistence farmer is shown how much of a better yield he can get from his animals by taking care of them properly. How much more a donkey can carry if its feet are in good shape and the sores on its back are treated properly. If we educate our children to respect animals that is half the battle won right there,as RuthM said what some do to animals is a precursor to what they will graduate to in later life. I don't say that everyone must run out and get pets no matter what ,but children learn behaviour by what they see and are taught. A very smart lady taught me we can all do our bit by saving/helping even one animal at a time, just that little bit will make a difference.Perhaps then we can live up to Gandhi's words. edited by Nomad on 22/03/2013 edited by Nomad on 22/03/2013

Not sure of the jurisdiction .Possibly Pet Paws could give you a bit of advice on what direction to take.It also depends on how much time you are prepared to spend on this as off the top of my head I don't know who you can approach really.Maybe a picture and a letter to 7days. The Al Ain Animal Sanctuary might also be able to give you a bit of help. It sounds disgraceful and it is only a matter of time before someone is bitten then all heck will break loose. To me it sounds like a bit of a fairground type of attraction, probably someones ' pets ' who have grown up and become a handful. I just boil when I read things like this...... Thank you for taking the time to try and do something.

We do not want to move, our landlord is aware of the situation and he will intervene if we get no joy with the police. The police was supposed to get the husband to the station to sign a document they will no longer make noise after 11 pm. I do not think they did it as the noise level has not changed. Yes they are the neighbors from h..ll. it seems they have never lived in a city . Sounds like you are on the right track....keep on at the police until you get it resolved.

I can so relate Virtue.DXB was our last posting,we had been expats for over 25 years all over the place,BAH being one of favourites. I found the new DXB very glitzy but found my niche with like minded people rather than the circles we moved in. I remember the old DXB when there was almost nothing Oh how the times change a place how life moves on , I really wish some of the OLD DXB had been preserved but it is all about progress and moving on... maybe too quickly.(bit of drift there :)) Many I know we're just to scared to make deep relationships as they knew that it was only a matter of time before you or they moved on.Sad I know. Have always found it so much easier to relate to my dear expat friends as they really understand me better than others what life is like abroad all the trials and tribulations. Sill have many of them from the early days, had one for visit last year and it was like we had seen each other just last week.Shed many tears laughed ourselves silly and of course brought out the old photos .I cried buckets when she left. I say grab it when you . edited by Nomad on 21/03/2013

You sounds at wits end....have you thought of doing a few videos of the noise level and time it is happening and taking it to the /complex manager /security/police and ask them what steps can be taken. It may take drastic measures though, perhaps moving as it sounds like these are the neighbours from h..l, by the sounds of it they won't listen to anyone. A very good idea. Also film the mother shouting her piece. Be careful though, to not let them see you filming. I would be careful of actually recording anyone, privacy issues and all that. We had a friend who actually bought one of those noise measuring things and he had the video on this machine while recording ! Worked a treat with the local authorities.

I live in Umm Sequiem 2 and often see this monkey on a lead. I don't think it is a baboon, but either way it shouldn't be on a lead living in a residential area. Feel sad for it. Why feel sad? At least they are looking after it. ?....It shouldn't be a 'pet' in the first place,it is as Kaba said a WILD ANIMAL.. what I am wondering is what happens if this poor animal bites someone, that is if it hasn't had its teeth removed as happens a lot.:( edited by Nomad on 21/03/2013

So so sorry you are having to go through this. Agree with sarahlou your doctor has not given a definite diagnosis. I am sure you are in a total tailspin right now and imagining the worst case scenario. It is really hard but try and slow your racing mind down. Firstly have you had all the tests to confirm this ?' I think you have cancer' is really very vague. I would be heading for a second opinion before we start speaking about treatment and abroad at that. The most important thing now is to get confirmation of your condition once you have that then start looking to treatment and where you will have it. Hopefully in the morning there will be someone on the board to give you a bit of direction from experience. Sending prayers and thoughts your way. N xxx edited by Nomad on 21/03/2013

So sorry to read about your troubles MrsJT. What you say is so true...Many Many years back friends of ours had the most amazing friendly dog that would be walked off leash on a usually deserted beach. This particular day there was a man and his son walking on the beach. The dog ran over to say hi and this child started screaming,he went over and licked the little boy NO bites or aggression.Well all h..l broke loose. Our friends landed up in court for months and eventually paid a massive fine. From then on all of those who used to walk off leash NEVER tried it again. It is wise to remember that where you live is not always dog friendly even if a security guard or policeman says it is OK,if as In MrsJT case something happens where is that policeman now? MrsJT I sincerely hope the couple who are putting you through this get their Just desserts and Karma catches up real soon.

Nomad, to be honest I don't talk about it, and have never written about it. I saw this thread when it was originally posted but chose not to reply, for fear of it sounding crazy; only when I saw there are others out there that I could relate to I decided to share. In a way it has been comforting for me also to do so. Funny how you mentioned about 3rd party, I often feel like I was a spectator. I distanced myself hugely (emotionally) and therefore sometime think of it as if it wasn't me who went through it. I do hope that all of our replies can give an insight for anyone struggling, and will offer support and advice if needed. You mentioned about children that seemed to cope but weren't, and you are so right, what child can process a parent dying without intense pain, questioning and grief? Well done you for being involved in such a cause, I know I wouldn't have the strength to do so. Writing your feelings and thoughts in a journal was one of the things I used to suggest. You have put it down on paper so well why not permanently......it might even help to get a few things off your chest ,help you understand your feelings. edited by Nomad on 19/03/2013

I always feel for the kids who's parents can't afford the expensive trips. I would have been one of them........ Our trips were to local museums parks monuments etc. One long bus trip , 5 days across country to see more monuments and museums. My folks really skimped to send me on that one. What is amazing is the fond memories I have of the down to earth simple times, there was more than enough time as I got older to enjoy and appreciate broader horizons. JMO

OP good advice from Lolacat and echochic, I was thinking the same when I first replied but had to run. We fostered a JR for 3 months a few years back and he was a such a sweetheart but he hated our cats , everything else went fine he was so well behaved UNTIL he saw the cats,we have 9 !!! Inside and out....... We really worked hard trying to get him to accept the ,moggies but eventually adopted him out to a family without cats.....he was on the older side, 12 .It is really important to train them as they are really strong willed but must be shown who actually rules the roost. As another poster mentioned get your ducks in a row re proof of shots etc. just in case. Good luck . edited by Nomad on 19/03/2013

Such heart wrenching replies.....I am sure it has not been easy for some to reply. My heart goes out to you all.To OP so sorry for your friends family and their loss. Mrs Mopp your post has so touched me.It is almost as if you have been a third party who has managed to have a look into your own loss of your Father. I worked in the field with cancer and a1ds ,helping families cope and can't say how many times I was a total loss for words when children were involved. They 'seem' to be managing but really are not. By sharing the way you all have really does help those who have not had to cope with the loss of a percent as a child,to somewhat understand and help. Heart-breaking video :( :( so sad. Basically tha cat was ran over by a car which shattered its spine and killed it. The other cat amazingly tries to resuscitate it by performing hear compressions and trying to get it to breathe by mouth-to-mouth by then lost hope. The vet then arrives and tries to save it but it was already too late. The vet is amazed by the other cats's human-like attempts to save it. The video is ended by the question "Who inspired this cat to act this way?" Which is answered by some verses in the quran that God embedded mercy in all creatures whether human or animals which causes them to have compassion for each other. Thanks for that.

Yes very true echochic there are Ethical breeders out there. I knew of a Dobie breeder who only let her females breed every other year and would stop breeding after a set no of litters. She also used to inspect the new homes AND would personally check up that the pups were spayed/neutered when they came of age. She did it for the love of the breed NOT for money. I watched the part two of Pedigree dogs exposed.....agree that until these kennel clubs get their houses in order it will go on.As the geneticist said in a number of years some of the breeds will be beyond saving, extinct breeds. In the same vain watched the clip on Brachycephalic breeds. Why would you put these poor animals through this....one poor mite went through a 2 hour op to open up her nose passage, and at what cost !!! Will say it again.......IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.............very little has to do with 'keeping the breeds pure':( edited by Nomad on 11/03/2013

It's interesting reading the comments on this thread. Like most people I'm not going to point fingers at my sons and say "you must be a lawyer, you must be a doctor, you must become a CEO someday." I do want them to find a passion or profession that interests them and ultimately become successful in whatever they've chosen to do. Being completely hands off, while understandable, does have downfalls. Looking back I certainly had friends whose parents only said "do whatever you love," with the result that they ended up floating without much guidance into various degree programs that they only had a vague interest in and into jobs that didn't interest them very much. Some quickly realized the missteps they had made and corrected them, others are still stuck in positions they're merely ok with. All of them agree that if they could turn the clock back they would have chosen different career paths. The last thing I want for my sons is to have a midlife crisis when they're only 30 after wasting their 20s pursing certain degrees and career paths only because they didn't know what else to do. As a parent I do think I have a guiding role in helping to avoid this from happening. At the same time the pragmatic in me says few people end up doing what they genuinely want to do as not everyone is a budding architect or a vet or has an inner passion that easily translates into a certain occupation. One way or another most people end up working for some company in occupations they never dreamed of as a child. As DH says there's lots of tricks of trade in navigating the corporate environment and moving up the ladder, some of which each person has to learn on their own but others which can be gained via valuable advice from experienced people. My sons must learn that they will have to work very hard in whatever they chose to do if they want to be financially successful. They must also realize that advancement is all about taking advantage of the opportunities presented to them. They must learn how to take advantage of those opportunities. I also do think it's worthwhile that we stress to the boys that there are clear financial benefits in following certain career paths and industries over another. At the end of the day it will be their decision in what they want to do. But we will provide as much advice and guidance along the way as we can. Really good post TB. It is up to us to guide them but just as important to listen to them. We have gone throught this with our boys our eldest who breezed through school was such a devil at opening a book to study. He kept on saying but I don't want to be a doctor, lawyer etc I want to work with my hands use my artistic talents. He is now in the field of sustainability and developement which we would never have thought of all those years back.As you say TB he has been really vigalent and watched his timing, and worked very long hours in climbing that ladder. My youngest is in the trades, suits him perfectly,he has thrived in his in his field. Both still come and discuss major decisions with us ,before making them. Thinking outside of the box is really important. In Canada at the moment there aresooooooo many University Graduates walking around with degrees that seemed good at the time ( HR are the ones who are finding it really difficult to get work)but carries no weight at the moment.I know of 4 personally who have massive student loans who are doing anything they can to keep the wolf from the door. In most cases there was very little if no input from the parents. Can't help but feel some Unversities also have pushed some degrees to cover their costs. I truly believe one of the best things we can help our chidren with is a work ethic. Something that is sadly lacking today as in some schools esp. government ,the children get put up no matter what,it has become OK to do the bare minimum and still graduate.I know this is not the case with the schooling in DXB but in much of the world it is. What a great thread this has been and I am sure given many food for thought.

If you truly are an animal lover you would then rethink about breeding and help the soo many DEATH ROW dogs who need a lifeline. Please visit DM's shelter and then make your decision. Either way please watch this BBC documentary called "pedigree dogs exposed" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZMegQH1SPg As Nomad said, leave the breeding to the professional ethical breeders who know what they are doing. ecochic had a moment today to view the youtube clip.......WOW a MUST SEE for anyone looking to source a pedigree dog of any breed. My heart just broke for the poor King Charles with the terrible headache... We humans can be so despicable :( Way to go Carol Fowler hope you eventually close them down or at least have mandatory health clearance certificates part of these high profile dog shows.... edited by Nomad on 09/03/2013

I am a Veterinary Nurse & although I've been in the industry for ages, it is still heartbreaking to have to put to sleep perfectly healthy & happy kittens/puppies who's only crime is being born at all... It's a horrible decision you had to make but definitely the best one... And good on you for taking responsibility of this little kitty! So many people would just put their hands up & say "But, she's not mine!" Adding to the problem of strays in UAE! Reading through this thread I was just thinking about you folk who have to do this on an ongoing basis. You have my utmost thanks and appreciation for what you do,it Is anything but an easy job. I have had to terminate a pregnancy recently on a feral girl roaming on the outskirts of our property, the poor vet. Nurse at our shelter vet was in tears that day as it was just getting too much for her. As you put it 'their only crime is being born at all' so heartbreaking but so true.Take care. edited by Nomad on 06/03/2013

But MT you don't have to leave the forum for good..... There are a few of us who have left DXB but still pop in for a catch up an opinion or a bit of advice. All the best in your travels. ETA loved your 'paying it forward' comment what a nice way to put it.;) edited by Nomad on 06/03/2013
