Had to laugh.....My son sitting on Mom's knee " Nan where do all the have cracks on your face come from" answer "Your grandad "........

I am sure many of us have done something we have later regretted. Yes I agree when it comes to injecting poison into yourself you should research it properly, but botox is and has been promoted as this fix all ( I was offered botox as a treatment to help with back problems but declined when the Dr. told me what it was ). I can't help but feel reading your posts mamasrock that you have gone through an awful lot and your warning was out of genuin concern. If nothing else it has raised the question and promoted awareness. On an open forum you will always get the positive and negatives don't take it personally. You shared information and a personal experience to warn others. I sincerely hope you get better and the nerves heal.I too have severe problems with nerve issues and the pain can be too much to cope with at times, so have an idea of what you have explained. All the best ;)

I do have to get to sleep because I'm exhausted, but I think it's important to remember also that there are plenty of illnesses you can get (and nasty ones too) that are not vaccine-preventable. Being 100% vaccinated doesn't make you invincible. Maybe I'm a stick in the mud, but I refuse to take my kids to any of those soft play places - usually only for birthday parties they've been invited to - because none of them ever look that clean and the thought of the germs that lurk there really freak me out. I also avoid crowds or crowded areas/times like the plague. I'm not a germophobe, but too conscious of how disgusting people are. The one year my older son went to a lot of those play places, etc. (and he's vaccinated, mind you), he got some weird weird viruses, strange rashes, all kinds of things. Kids will pick up colds and stuff at school, but that other stuff was freaky. This also makes me think of the recent hullabaloo about whooping cough. I know in US and UK they are making a big push to give booster shots to older kids and insisting that adults get it because the pertussis rates are going up. Meanwhile, in Australia, they recently determined that the cocoon vaccinating (where everyone around the infants, etc. gets the vaccine to protect those that can't get it or are too young) was making no difference at all in the rates, so they discontinued the recommendation. So who has it right in the end? I think it boils down to a lot of unknowns, which is also why this is such a complex issue for some people to process. And in all of these other countries, there was no overwhelming finger pointing at the unvaccinated people - in fact in many cases, it was either a situation where vaccinated people were passing on the disease because they had contracted a mild version of it and thus were silent carriers, or they think in some cases maybe vaccine is not as strong as it should be (like DPT vs. DaPT), or that the b. pertussis bacteria is mutating to a stronger more vaccine-resistant form. So it's not always necessarily the unvaccinated who "put others in danger". There are so many factors that contribute to this. Nature is wily. Sorry for rambling, I just find this subject terribly fascinating and also how difficult it is to be in the middle, that's to say neither unquestionably pro-vaccine, nor anti-vaccine either. There doesn't seem to be a lot of room for people who sit on this fence because each side wants to throw you in the other's camp depending on what questions you ask! Good luck to you and your investigation samie10. :) edited by sobevan on 01/11/2012 Oh my goodness sobevan you sound like me.If someone sneezes next to me I jump 10 feet to get out the way.I always take extra paper towel from the dispenser to open washrooms that have doors.....!

Nomad, going back to your comment, how many of theses diseases are airborne and how many are caught through germs via touching door handles, toys etc? I am not sure which comment you are referring to,but assume it was the one re the malls etc. My DIL discussed this very issue with the whole family before having our Grand kids immunized.Recently the subject came up again as they will be travelling to a temperate climate for a beach holiday and hepatitus came up. You seem to have also done a fair bit of research and I am sure you have read that measels, mumps, rubella TB,diptheria and chicken pox have airborne transmission. However some of these can linger for up to 2 hours on door handels toys etc. Polio has a fecal oral transmission.Tetanus is generally found in sand. Believe me we have looked at this from both sides as I have a niece who has an autistic child who believes that she became autistic after her immunization. Everything Andrew Wakefield wrote became her bible so to speak. She refused to look any further than what he published. It devistated her when his research was thrown out by The Lancet. As I said before it is a very personal decision that only you can make,I merely brought up the issues I would look at personally having lived abroad in many mixed cultures. All the best in your search.

On other forums around the world the subject is discussed at some length, I was surprised at the seemingly lack of discussion I had been able to find in the UAE, specifically discussing the environmental factors which would perhaps affect decisions made, hence, asking. But that is just it. A very large no of the working population in the UAE have not the faintest idea of immunization etc. thus the government take the precaution of requiring immunization, to protect the general population.

I asked the same question a few weeks ago, so to save you the mauling (no pun intended) that I received (I hadn't done a search and wasn't aware that it was such a hot potato!), definitely look at adopting an animal from a shelter or look at the dogs available on Dubizzle who are free to good homes (which include puppies). We got a 3 month old 'jack Russellish' dog from a shelter and he's now been with us 4 weeks so we're all learnign about eachother. He is a cross breed, but very terrier-like and is lovely (except this morning when he started barking at 4.30...oh how I loved taking him for a walk at 5am). someone here recommended a firm called Euro Puppy who will ship your selected puppy here from Hungary however the view from people I spoke to at shelters was that any dog coming from Eastern Europe is bound to be from a puppy mill. I did ask at one of the petshops and although he didn't have any 'stock' he told me that he would be getting new 'stock' in 10 days and then gave me a list of about 6-8 really cute / small dogs...his 'stock' comes from Ukraine and Thailand, which I think says it all. They are also VERY expensive (about 10,000 AED). We paid 500 to Sharjah Cat and Dog Centre which covers all his injections, microchipping and the snip. HTH and best of luck. So happy to hear that your "Jack Russelish" is doing well. Despite your early alarm he sounds lovely..... I know many of us on the animal rescue front come across as a bit aggressive but my primary concern is always for the welfare of animals in general. Things tend to get a bit heated ,pretty much like the no go discussions on politics and religion...... ;)

I so agree loubeelou.I have seen the results in Africa where children do not have access to vaccines and immunization. Dr Andrew Wakefield has a lot to answer for(the Dr.who supposedly linked Autism to the MMR vaccine ) he fudged his research and the result is a re introduction of many serious disseases that vaccines had under control. Personally when my kids were born it was a foregone conclusion that they be vaccinated, in fact the local visiting nurse would have turned you in to the local authorities if you failed to vaccinate. This was a reaction of the polio scare of the 1930's.I got chicken pox as a small child gave it to my mom and she was deathly ill, she had not been vaccinated. Yes it is entirly your decision BUT be informed not just from the net, ASK your Peads, doctors etc. for their advice and most importantly what effect your decision will have on the others you come in contact with.As Puffinlund mentioned , her h/dresser losing her baby due Rubella from a client. DXB has a very transient population with many coming from countries where immunnization is not done, personally I wouldn't take the risk. To Op I would suggest that you look at it in the context of if you want to continue with your childs vaccines based on the fact that you either want to vaccinate or not. Deal seperatley with the school issue. edited by Nomad on 31/10/2012

Lynett84 your story is so heartbreaking, I can only imagine how you must have suffered. The way you have handled it is testamony to the wonderful woman you have become. It takes a very special person to go through what you did and still say it was better for one person to live this life than 2. It is very strange but I feel so much closer to my Mom now that she has passed on because she knows now the hurt I went through seeing her so badly abused. Sometime I think emotional abuse can be so much worse than actual physical abuse.I was so confused at the time (5yrs old when I was first able to assess what was going on) as my Dad loved me to bits and I must admit spoiled me at times.I was so terribly torn between them, wanting to protect my mother and not believeing that my father could do what he was doing. She died a shell of the beautiful viberant person she was....... To OP the emotional/physical bully never changes it is bred into them either by the way they were raised or by fighting bullies themselves, only to become one. Another thing worth noting, children no matter how young do cotton on to what is going on. Please take heed of the many experiences here on EW there is some valuable advice. OP - as others have said this is emotional abuse. You cannot change your DH's behavior - only your reaction to it- until you get to the stage where he has less control and the fallout is less disruptive. But be forewarned, those who emotionally abuse often up their game when thwarted and things can become worse in the short term. Google emotional abuse, go to reputable sites and look for strategies in how to deal with this behavoir; if you can afford and find it, personal counselling can be helpful and supportive. You need to educate yourself on this subject as knowledge truly is power. Once you have done you can make informed decisions on if you want to make the effort to deal with this - and if you do how to go about it. Emotional abusers thrive on making you feel "useless, stupid and / or crazy" and lowering your self esteem day by day. Please take some steps to help empower your self. I have been the victim of emotional abuse and I know the only cure is to take some steps to help yourself. The first one being to acknowledge what is truly going on. I wish you the strength to help yourself. x Great advice. My father was a master and my mom put up with it for nearly sixty years. The only release she found was when she passed away. Please...... don't let this happen to you.:( edited by Nomad on 22/10/2012

How long have you had the new addition ? It can take a few weeks to successfully introduce a new cat. Carry on with the seperation, the sniffing under the door and exchanging blankets etc. The cat box is a really good plan I have used this trick very successfully. It gives them a chance to sniff each other out, without any chance of coming to blows. Persistance is the key. Good luck. ;)

In the dark ages when I was in primary school we learn't cursive at age 8. We used an ink fountain pen, a Parker 4421. It was a big leap to becoming more 'grown up'. I will forever be grateful as it seems these skills are going by the wayside together with the printed word. As SueB says what if the option of computors were not available, there would be a large no of folk who couldn't write a word. I went on to do Calligraphy later on in life and also went for Shodo lessons in Japan. It taught me to appreciate the beauty of the art of writing. I think it is up to this generation to make sure that their children take the art of writing into the future or we will eventually lose it. Dh is left handed and I know he always found cursive difficult, so he adapted his printing to look cursive as he always said I think faster than I can write. The result looks odd but then as he says so long as it is legible and tidy it's fine. edited by Nomad on 17/10/2012

to dump a domesticated animal on the street because you do not believe in euthanasia is turning your back on the cat. You are saying go and fend and I hope you do not starve or another cat beats you to death, or that you get injured and die a very slow, painful death, but go ahead and put the cat out with food and water and hope for the best. I do not agree and will never agree with this kind of thinking. Why do you think there are so many rescue organizations trying to rehome, take care of all the animals that people have dumped because they do not fit in with their family rather than trying to home them aggressively first or taking the responsibility of the cats life. We must stop thinking that animals are expendable and we can just leave them :(....the feral cats on the street live there, used to living there, can take care of themselves for the most part. Domesticated cats or dogs cannot live because they are not street smart. If people do not believe in euthanasia I respect that completely! you have your beliefs. I do not believe in putting an animal out on the street to fend for themselves when they have been loved and taken care of, fed......there are many on this board who feel this way and we are on the front lines, picking up the dead, or abused or starving animals who have been let out to fend for themselves, people who move and leave their animal sitting on the porch waiting for their family to come and get them :(......so not for one minute think that this is alright. You take responsibility for an animal for life not in the hoped it will be alright when you abandon it :( I have reread what I have written a few times before I posted. I would not change a thing I have written, and yes, It angers me so this was partially written with the knowledge of what happens that those that dump animals rarely see, because....they do not look :( edited by SueB on 17/10/2012 Excellent post SueB

The story continues to make headline news in Canada. Apparently the RCMP have over 400 leads from all over the world. What amazes me is how far flung this case of bullying is. I can't help but think of Rina Virk who was bullied and murdered by the crowd she was hanging out with, because she was different. That was 15 years ago and it seems that bullying is only getting worse. The only difference is most of the bullying has been done online in Amanda's case, although one of the girls did beat her up. Cdnexpat and Andreasmullet great posts, when my sons were growing up this issue of I have my rights to my privacy was just starting to creep in. Both Oh and myself were pretty quick to point out we WOULD be snooping and still in control of what was happening under our roof and beyond. We were INVOLVED in thier lives,in all aspects. I know I may be the only person on the planet but I don't have a FB account, my friends and family still keep contact via email and I still get photos, news etc. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with FB but it can get abused and just look what can happen. As has been pointed out that dodgy picture/ comment gets sent out and you can never get it back. So sorry to hear of your dilema. The fact that the dog has bitten so many people, adults and children, IMO the kindest thing to do is to genlty put him to sleep. You mention that you have tried everything, training etc. by finding a new home you are just moving the problem to a different location. I think the odds of finding a home for him where he wil not encounter strangers and just be left alone to snooze as very slim. Yes there is always the possibility that the dog will just be dumped if he attacks or bites anyone.:( With regards to the vet I would try another vet, explain the situation about the constant biting, food aggression . I am the last person who will just put an animal to sleep but you must be practicle. He is having no life and in fact probably getting more agressive being locked up and isolated.Another BIG warning is the food aggression I would be so afraid that he will attack one of the kids..... badly....... I have had to put a dog down because of aggression/biting but I did it out of love for the dog. HTH N edited by Nomad on 13/10/2012 edited by Nomad on 13/10/2012

One of our friends lopped off the tree at ground level drilled a big hole in the middle of the trunk poured petrol down and burnt the stump. I wouldn't suggest this as a solution but he got quite desperate !!

Having had personal struggles with our neighbours Damas trees,I can't give a professional opinion but.....the roots that destroyed our pipes and lifted the common wall were directly traced back to his Damas trees. In our garden we had a no of Pointsienna trees the neighbour said it was our trees doing the damage. So in the spirit of being a good neighbour, and to prove a point,I got the gardener to literally trace the roots of the our tree nearest the damaged wall and drainage pipes. We were able to show that it was def his trees. With respect to the Damas being used in the rest of the region I remember reading that they were used as windbreaks and to stop soil erosion. In DXB they have been introduced into areas where houses are really close together with ideal watering and growing conditions. Even if they are cut back severly they will grow back with a vengance and persist in their quest for water from the nearest source. Our neighbour initially cut his way back when we first discovered the problem, however in no time they had reached new heights and the root system carried on regardless. JMHO

Me neither. I don't [i'>want[/i'> it to be true. I have been so pro Armstrong through all of this, however when he dropped his appeal I felt very uncomfortable. Yesterday when the news broke about the 11 team mates I started to look at this from the other angle.I don't want to belive it but in the past I have so been wrong. Marian Jones eventually admitted that she used steriods,I didn't believe she was guilty initially. Then again another little vioce in my head keeps on saying but what if he didn't use anything, how can he prove it.. My Dh competed internationally in the late 60's and was always pipped by two guys, from countries I will not mention, who were already dabbling in steriods in sports. There was just no catching them and then it was later established that they were using steriods. In those years they even held onto their titles. I know he felt cheated. Besides the ehtical use of steriods in sports what about the damage it does to their bodies. You will have to pay the piper eventually. edited by Nomad on 12/10/2012

"Your uncle (name) has passed away. LOL." He called, "why is that funny?" "No one is laughing, son." "You did, LOL." Parents start talking to each other. "Oh no, we thought LOL meant Lots Of Love. Nomad, thanks for reply. Grass would be the last thing on my list, do you think I'd still have to the the irrigation system first, before starting on anything else? Eli1979, thank you ever so much for your good advice! It really helps to get detailed prices and names of places I should look at! You're a l Garden saver! :) I'd love to come with you when you'll go on your gardening trip, when were you thinking about going? Shall we swap e-mail addresses on here? I think we'd need about 125 sq m for the pinkish red interlocks, around 120 sq m of grass and the white/beige gravel for all around the edges... That's really what I thought of as my starting point.... Trees, bushes a.s.o will be bought later on. After reading your advice, I really think that the best way to go is to buy the things I need and then have one of the "door-knocking" gardeners to do the job for me. Do you have any idea on what a reasonable quote for the labour would be? I thought about setting them up against each other and have a competition on the cheapest possible quote... Kind of like "Dubai's Gardeners got talent" :) Irrigation system is a must and should be laid with future projects in mind. I did a view from above drawing of the shape of the garden and then added in where I would like beds, trees and paving etc. Be careful of squeezing the gardeners down too low as the cheapest quote is not always the best job, go for the average IMO.A friend had paving done and squeezed the guy down so low that he did a real hack job. Eli1979 wish you were around when I was doing my garden !;)

Hi MM I am no expert but one of the most important things to be done is an irrigation system. My DH had grass planted as a surprise for me when I arrived. He thought he could water it himself..result dead grass. What I did on a limited budget was to plant grass first and put in the system. That took care of the dust and sand ,I then started to plan the garden and cut the grass away bit by bit.Adding beds paving areas and trees as my budget allowed. One thing to note everything grows really fast in DXB so you don't have to pay extra for the more mature trees and shrubs. My trees took an average of tree years to grow into really tall mature trees. Above all stay away from the Damas trees, the nursery's will tell you they grow really fast and make a good noise barrier and shade etc. Their roots are terrible and many have had to remove them at great costs because of the damage to underground pipes. All the best and happy gardening. N

Well OMG and Seriously go Like so well together you know what I mean like it's like totally EPIC you know it's like so AWESOME! Like seriously, come ooooon! Duhhh! Oopsies.. Can't believe I did that! MY BAD! lol Talk about that blackboard. Not wanting to start a debate but I really have a problem with the answer "good" when I ask someone how they are. I know to some it seems I am being uptight but when I went to school my English teacher would have had a fit if we said good in response to how are you. It is a North American term but I still have to stop my self correcting everyone who uses it.

OP - there is a gorgeous Shnauzer puppy which gets walked near my apartment in the Marina. I may ask the owner when I see them again. They make for awesome pets! Recently I was having a look at the UK animal shelter websites and I was very surprised to see that the majority of the dogs available were all high breeds - German Shephards, Boxers, Staffies, Weimarans and even a Siberian Husky. I was expecting to see a lot of mongrels but very few up for adoption. Wow, didn't realise a dog thread could cause such a cat fight.. *Huh*:\:

My Grandaughter(5) came home from school the other day answered her Dad with a "whatever" and rolled the eyes.I though he would explode. It was one of my pet peeves and it seems I have passed it on to him.

When Mom was nearing the end I got so much support on the board and honestly "felt" the sincerety of the posters.I would often draw on this when at home dealing with judgemental family. To OP just let your friend know that you are there no matter what,it will make all difference. Thanks Maroosh , I think it was the injustice of the accusations that hurt the most. I know I will get over it in time.... TDB I will pray for your mom and your family. edited by Nomad on 10/10/2012

Yes, Nomad, it was my puppy who was sold with papers saying the wrong birth date. It was only by a month. It should be noted, however, that most top breeders take puppies away from their mothers at 8 weeks and my puppy was shipped at 12 weeks so he had 4 more weeks with his mother than a puppy from an ethical breeder in the UK or US might have had. I checked with the vet and I was assured that this is common practice so that the puppies can travel at 3 months rather than 4 months which is UAE law. It does not affect the puppies in terms of missing out on time with their mother since it has been established by the Kennel Club that puppies can leave their mothers at 8 weeks. I believe that it is wrong to consider that dogs go through "trauma" by travelling at a young age. They are not aware that they are in an aeroplane, they are in a crate which most puppies find secure and comforting. They do not know they are travelling at 500mph or that they are 38,000 feet in the air and they are not traumatised by it. I think to consider that they are is an arrogant imposition of human values onto a different animal. Some may be confused or tired, but that is not trauma. I think you are completely right about considering adoption and suggesting it but I fear that the tone of some of the pro-adoption posts may indadvertedly come across as dogmatic (excuse the pun...), aggressive and bullying and it doesn't help your cause. I say this not to be unpleasant but to explain why you get some very negative reactions. I know exactly where you are coming from emmsie.I know when I am in the process of adopting out a foster I can be very up front and some may feel it as agression. This is possibly because we see so much on the negtive side when it comes to animal cruelty.I don't want the poor soul to get a home only to be dumped 6 months later. I am the worst on the board with regard to doing searches, just cant get it to work for me, so I shouldn't even be commenting LOL !!! but there are so many posts on buying as opposed to rescuing and ethical breeding. For my part I hope my posts don't come across as dogmatic LOL pushy or agressive, I always try to be informative. That being said I will defend my views based on experience. With regard to air travel I must disagree,it is no walk in the park for adults or puppies. I have lived in many countries and have carted my pets all over the world for the past 30 years, all have found it difficult. In some cases my husband was the pilot transporting them so he made sure the transition went as smoothly as possible. However on the other side when they arrive there is always their loving family to heIp them get over the last few hours. These poor mites are shoved in a cage on show like a stuffed toy in a toy shop. In the end all I ask is that you research properly before you buy/adopt/rescue a pet, and if you buy please make sure it is from an ethical breeder. Some may call it self rightous, but if it brings awareness to as many as possible about the continued dumping of pedigree animals at shelters and the horror of puppy mills ,it worked. Just look at the ongoing discussions(cat fight as one posters said is a bit OTT) this thread has encouraged. :) N edited by Nomad on 11/10/2012

I am a working mum but think it's great when SAHMs have help because a happy mummy (who has time for the gym and her other needs) means a happier family. You are also providing a job for someone (and probably her family) who needs the income. And trust me -- your DD knows who is the mummy and who is the helper, and it's great that she is comfortable being with someone else to look after her when you need to shower or spend time with your husband! Spot on Court5.When my boys were young we had a nanny/house help, she over time became a part of our family. At first I felt as you do but after a time we all settled down into our routines and I can honestly say today I don't know how I would have done without her.My husband worked and we ran a own business so I wasn't exactly a SAHM but was at home. Sit back and enjoy it.................If and when you go back home you might not have this luxury and as C5 says you are giving someone a job.

As many of you know I buried my Mom in May,she suffered with Parkinson's and Alzheimers. Her last few months were really hard, I was miles away and could not make sure that everything that should have been done for her,was in fact done. I am still dealing with the guilt of not being there. Am reading all of your posts in floods of tears as she died before I could get to say goodbye. It is such a tragic evil disease as it literally steals the person from you. I know it is really difficult to cope with but if I can give you any advice it would be to make the most of every lucid moment. Try not to show just how frustrated you are at times.Hard I know ... The last time I saw Mom she was 50-50 and I am really sorry that I let others interfere(family) as to how much time I could spend with her. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you who are fighting this fight...... N XXX

Sorry about losing your girl. On the home page under Famalies there is a Pet and Vets section. In this seaction are guidelines to follow. There are many helpful tips. Most important is to get flyers out there with a huge photo and REWARD in big letters. Pass these out to the gardeners and maids in your area.Go out late in the evening and shake a biscuit box calling her name.Check with neighbours to look in storage sheds garages etc. All the best, hope she finds her was home soon.
