Thank you all again for your wonderful support. mrswhippy, I cannot imagine how hard (but brave) it was for your brother to make that awful decision. I hope he, you and all his family are finding peace in knowing he was being so very unselfish and saving the suffering of that poor little soul. Last night we heard that he is stable and the doctors are pleased with his heart rate. They are trying two last drugs in an attempt to get everything under control. It seems that your prayers are really helping his fight, please may I beg you to continue for a little while longer? Thank you from the bottom of my heart, xx No need to ask,I haven't stopped and will continue today..... Thinking of you alll. N XXX

To those who object to posters advising against buying pets in the UAE. I can only speak for myself but I have had first hand experience of rescues at puppy mills. It not only disgusted me but demonstrated the one common thread involved, MONEY.It is first and foremost a commercial enterprise. Unless you know exactly where your puppy was bred, the conditions it was bred under, you have NO CLUE what it's origins are.A photo supplied by the pet store is not enough. I will say it again NOT ONE of us who suggest anyone looking for a pet go to the shelter says you HAVE to adopt. It is an option to be considered, two of the posters on this thread have found dogs. An animal is not a fashion accessory and before purchasing/adopting one you should do loads of research about the breed. What kind of temprament they have,is the dog suited to your enviroment/family situation and most importantly can you afford to take it home with you. If you truly want a specific breed that is your right, as it should be,but get it from an ethical breeder.Recently there was a thread "A Word of Warning" where a poster advised against buying from pets stores. Her friend had bought a puppy and the next day it was on deaths door, the vet bills had started already......not sure if the poor mite survived. It is truly irresponsible to buy a dog because it looks cute in a photo or displayed like a fluffy toy in a pet shop.Dogs and cats can live a long time,I have a cat rescued in the ME 20 years ago and he is still going strong. On many occasions on this board loads of suggestions have been made to prospective pet parents, on this thread alone the Great Dane rescue was mentioned and I know there is also a Husky Rescue which operates in DXB. When it comes to animal welfare those on the frontline are very passionate as they deal with effects of the thrown away and desgarded souls left on the streets,a hearbreaking job as it is never ending. emmsie was it not your pup bought here who was not the age displayed on the papers from the pet store ? mentioning this as the pet stores here have puppies that are brought in way too young to be taken from their moms. They need to expose them to the potential buyer for as long as possible,as the cuteness factor stirs up that impulse buy.The mother teaches the pup valuable lessons in it's first months not to mention the trauma these poor mites go through travelling around the globe at such a young age.A lot of the papers are also fudged because the pup is getting too old to sell so they give it a "new" birth date. I have seen the dark side of this coin and it is not pretty and ANYONE who gives up their puppy to an unknown fate half way across the globe is in it for the MONEY. Like Chocs1 I will continue to oppose this terrible practice as someone has to give the animals a voice.;) Yes we are passionate, because we care.................

If i had done that at 11, i would be lucky if i could sit down now...... (and 11 was a looooong time ago) Yep and then my folks would have made me write an apology to EVERYONE concerned. How times have changed. And deliver it in person, and do volunteer work to make up for it....... wait, now the answer is to sue. The cost of which will be passed onto future passengers.......

Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving! It's really interesting to see how two bodies of people have evolved customs, traditions, and even sports that are unique to the North American Continent, but are still different to each other. I find watching Canadian football really confusing! Can you imagine how confused I get......I am used to rugby and lawn hockey!

Day 2 Thanksgiving: Second turkey put in oven overnight to thaw(oven not on of course),still frozen this morning..... It is now basking in a bath of hot water. At this rate we might get to eat at midnight.Son is determined to cook a turkey for us this year no matter what. When I lived in Japan we were in a suburban area and my neighbour over the way had little ones. It seemed they all slept on thin mattresses on the floor in the tatami room. In the morning all the mattresses and bedding were aired out on the balcony. In the end I started to hang our bed quilts out for airing between washes and still do today, weather permitting. The pictures are sooo sweet.

My son was doing Thanksgiving (Canadian) this year.I was so thrilled to not have to cook and planned a lazy morning. At 6am this morning I get a frantic phone call..."mom you won't believe it the cats have got hold of the turkey overight". Apparently he had put it into the sink overnight to defrost, covered it with a hefty roast pan AND put one of his 10 lb weight lifting weights on top of it. His two petite cats manged to get the pan off and snacked on OUR TURKEY all night....soooo we will be having grilled cheese sandwiches for Thanksgiving. Still we should be thankful that we have something to eat. Little beggers;) Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians out there. edited by Nomad on 08/10/2012

It doesn't matter who the President is anyway. Robert Mugabe could be the President of the USA and things would always be the same. I don't have a bone in this fight but watched the debate, found it more like a discussion than a debate. On another note I recently received a ZIM $Billion note from family as a gag gift.It takes a special genius to wreak that kind of havoc on an economy. edited by Nomad on 06/10/2012

It always make me sad when I see a pet shop with these poor animals lined up like little furry toys in their boxes. People end up considering living creatures as consumer goods. Pay a few thousand dirhams, the price of an iPhone 5, and get yourself a pet. When you're tired of it, throw it and get a new one. Just last week, I rescued a gorgeous cat who was dying of heat exhaustion on the street. Luckily he was registered with Dubai Municipality and I tracked down the owners. They did not want him back. The registration was not even 12 months old and the cat maximum 18 months. That's the life expectancy of many pets in Dubai. Barely more than a smart phone... Shelters are full of these discarded, beautiful, loving animals. How sad! Sorry for ranting.... Had to get it out of my system! Really good post flucie. Hopefully you can find a good forever home for the cat. There was a debate going on on the main forum about buying a dog. I am so opposed to this vile practice and have given my reasons many times. The minute "the adopt a pet brigade" brings up the fact that there are so many abandoned pets in Dubai and that they should look at adopting, the arguments kick in about why should people adopt instead of buy. Your description is perfect, in many cases, as the shelters have many pure bred animals up for adoption. They as you say have reached their sell by date. As long as there is this mindset of "it is cute and I want one" prevails there will always be a problem. Some people treat animals like a fashion accessary not a living breathing emotional being. Phewwww my rant is also over...;)

I really don't understand this "adopt a pet" brigade!!! Maybe the poster wants a specific pure breed! Why should she not have the option of doing that, without getting run down by EW?!!? Not one of the so called "adopt a pet brigade " say you HAVE to adopt a pet it is generally mentioned as an OPTION. By the way thank goodness for the "Adopt a pet brigade" or the streets would be over run with abandoned starving animlas that nobody gave a d*m about. We posted at the same time but if you read my post I do make suggestions about sourcing a particular breed......

I'm pretty shocked by this response. Where do people here buy dogs? If I post my email would someone be prepared to speak to me to point me in the right direction? If I were in the uk it would be easy easy as you wouldn't"t buy from a shop in the first place and you would see the family (dog and people) . It's pretty hard to explain puppy farms to my sobbing 10 year old. She thinks we would be rescing it. Ok back to why you should not buy pets here: By your no of posts you are not new to the area and must realise that things are very different to the UK. The laws covering animal rights are vastly different. Having said that there are dodgy pets stores all over Europe. The whole issue comes down to the Ethical Breeding of animals. In DXB the puppies that are brought in come from "puppy mills", google puppy mills or puppy farms and have agood read. I would suggest you don't include your daughter as it may be too much for her. If you "save" a puppy by buying it from one of these pets stores you do nothing but promote the practice as they will just turn around and get another to replace it. Do a search on the site "A word of Warning " and read the story of a lady who bought a puppy from a local pet store. There are so many abandoned pets ( lots of pure breeds) at the shelters that you could save,in fact you would be saving two,the one you give a home to and make space to save another. If you are determined to source a particular breed contact the Kennel Club in your home country and find an ethical breeder through them. Recently a poster asked the same question and from the responses she decided to source an ethical breeder and if I remember correctly was flying over to pick up her new puppy. A good breeder WILL NOT send a puppy thousands of miles across the globe to an unknown fate. They care about their puppies and most are not in it to make money but to maintain and improve the breed. Those of us who do take the time to reply to these queries have in most cases had first hand experience of the results of puppy farming and its results. Yes you may be upset by our responses but this is an open forum and you said you had done research on here, but then you say surely all pet shops can't be bad... You left yourself pretty open to the replies. Hopefully you now have some other options to work on. N

To OP as others have suggested I think it is a good idea for you to pop over and have a chat.I don't condone animal hoarding in any form but you don't know if this is the case. There are many pet owners out there who have a large no. of pets who keep them and the area spotlessly clean. Talking about pet limits, in the region it would be a very difficult task, who would police it ? The authorities can barely keep up with what they have on their plate, what with ALL the strays on the streets and the cruelty to animals. If it weren't for the tirless efforts of the volunteer organizations, and people who take in strays, one can only imagine how grim things would be. Have to agree with the ladies about the badly behaved kids, now there a limit would be helpful ;) edited by Nomad on 01/10/2012

is it just me that thinks that the behaviour of the American crowd 'supporting' the Ryder cup, is well out of order? Any time a European hits the ball anywhere near water, they are shouting 'into the water' or completely ignoring great play if it is European shot! I am no snob, (or maybe I am!!), but am really dissapointed and in some cases disgusted with the shouts from the crowd. Good golf should be enjoyed and although I am all for supporting your own team, the crowd seems to be completely OTT. Some of the American players are not exactly helping matters. Although I would love to see the Europeans win, I am all for watching great golf without the catcalls from the unruly crowd. Rant over and back to the golf!! So agree Noddy2 it so goes against the etiquette of the game.Another thing that really gets me is the spitting,so uncalled for. Anyway the hollering didn't do much in the end (won't say too much for those who have it recorded and want to watch later ;)).

Yes I agree, Menopause is a natural part of the aging process for woman. Some woman ,as wuffles said, hardly know it is even happening, but then, there are those who have all of the symptoms full on. I am one of those who got the booby prize........... Hot flushes every 30 minutes night and day, anxiety, weight gain, short tempered with everyone, unable to get a decent nights sleep. It is all very well to say it is part of life but some of us need to take some form of medication to get through this stage. HRT is one way to go but be aware and informed before you just jump right in.Personally I felt uncomfortable with HRT and did a lot of research.Firstly I was not happy with the source of one of the products used i.e. premarin. It has been a long journey for me but I have now managed to sort myself out with the help of my doctor and Biodentical hormones. It has taken me nearly 4 years to get to this point and personally I feel that I should have started researching sooner as when it hit me I felt like my body had been taken over by an alien. As sushifee mentioned menopausematters site helps as you get to read about the different experiences some woman are going through. One thing that should have alerted me was the fact that my Gran was actually admitted to sanatorium when she went through menopause. The family photos of her when she came home after 18 months were such as shock.Back then you were treated like a bit of a nut and womans ailments were not spoken of. All in all I know my body is lacking in certain hormones which get depleted as we age and reach the non child bearing stage of our lives. At the end of the day I won't get a medal if I just grin and bear it. Hopefully I won't be one of those who suffer for 10 years and will be happy to get back to being "my old self" again, but in the meantime I will carry on with my bio's. keepitREAL so sorry you are going through such a tough time.:( Agree with Maroosh, you express yourself very well in writing about your problems. How about putting these feelings down on paper. My year has been horrendous, lost my mom, problems with my dad(nothing really different there), son had bad accident etc. The first thing people say is" you are so strong, you will get through it".Um NOOOOO I too need a shoulder now and then.My world was turned upside down this year but I am trying really hard to rescue the rest of 2012. I plan to speak to a professional to sort out a lot of what I am feeling and why, but in the meantime I have taken to writing my feelings down. I have also found that volunteering helps me to get myself "away" from my own problems. When I came to Dubai I missed my animals so badly that it started to become an issue.I contacted FF and became a foster mom, this filled that need and also helped the animals I so dearly love. Your beloved puppy is gone why not give K9 or any of the other shelters a call to volunteer your time in his memory. Hope the year starts to improve for you. N XX

Please go through some of the older threads about pedigree puppies. The ones in the pet shops come from puppy mills with questionable breeding practices. To the of my knowledge I dont think that there are any licensed "private" breeders in Dubai. This issue is debated constantly and it boils down to the fact that if you want to do this ethically, source a puppy from a breeder overseas.Generally they will put you through the ringer and some will insist on meeting you. A good idea is to get hold of the kennel club in your home country and they should be able to steer you in the right direction. A couple of weeks back one of the ladies on EW sourced a puppy from a breeder overseas and she is actually going to fetch the puppy.Sorry I can't remember her name but if you go back on here a few weeks you can read the last debated importing a puppy issue, there are loads.

... The shows will go ahead if we go or not.. ... No it won't. If everyone with a conscience boycotted these 'shows' then they would all have to close down. *sigh* Please don't support this appalling treatment of such beautiful animals. Agreed, without footfall these 'attractions' would not continue at all. How about educating your children about these animals being in the wild - where they should be! Don't forget these beautiful and intelligent animals were all taken from the wild - they're NOT captive bred and hundreds would have been needlessly slaughtered in the process. Captive dolphins don't live anywhere near as long as they would in the wild and many actually commit suicide from being so depressed in captivity. Think about that whilst you're 'enjoying' the show! Makes my blood boil! I'm sorry if this seems harsh - but it's the reality. Try watching The Cove and see what you're advocating when you go to see these shows. edited by Chocs01 on 11/09/2012 We really need a *LIKE* smiley...... We can spend days picking bits out of this post and that but, at the end of the day someone has died.RIP Sorry I have tried to put up a link but having hassels today, type in this site and have a quick read : List of Countries by traffic related deaths.Interesting reading .Yes I know most results are from 2007 but the roads have got more congested since then. Driving in Dubai is dreadful and in my opinion (not scientific ) most accidents could be avoided, less speed, less ego, more concentration on the task at hand. A basic respect of the rules of the road, you know the ones you are supposed to know when you do your driving tests, would go a long way. edited by Nomad on 10/09/2012

From my earliest memories I can remember my dad having guns.He had them for protection............however he was very careless with them. My mom got up one night to go to the loo and bang, she had bumped the gun that was propped on the ledge at the back of their headboard. On closer inspection we found the bullet had gone through her pillow ! This was just one of MANY incidents. My dad was licenced to carry firearms however he just didn't seem to get it about safe storage etc. Once when my life was in danger I was not sure if I could actually use the gun that I had access to.Thank goodness it never came to that, the police got there before I had to defend myself. What I am saying is a gun is not always a good idea for protection as the police said that if this maniac had managed to overpower me and take the gun it would have been tickets. The ownership of a firearm comes with HUGE responsibility , in the perfect world you should have to earn the right to own one. edited by Nomad on 10/09/2012 edited by Nomad on 10/09/2012

I just finished reading a book by Rebecca Bricker and have received her blog. If you want to go to Italy to celebrate your 40th you might want to consider her adventure. " I’d like to provide a stage for a transformational travel experience that begins with plucking sun-warmed grapes off the vine as you stroll through a vineyard. Painting a landscape that inspired Leonardo da Vinci. Exploring the back alleys of an ancient village or the remains of Etruscan ruins. Roaming the countryside on a Vespa (mamma mia!). And at the end of the day, coming ‘home’ to a 14th century farmhouse where a sumptuous Tuscan meal awaits you – at a table where fellow travelers share their tales." http://rebeccabricker.com/blog I loved my 40's and hope you do, too! SOLD...where do I sign up LOL:)

Follow your passion in life i.e. something or somewhere that you have always wanted to do or go to . Something entirely selfish. For example if I could do something for myself I would go on a art retreat. Maybe a few days of pampering, massages and facials etc. Whatever you do enjoy your Birthday. N x
