We have been expats for over twenty years and the trips home have always been a mixed bag.I can honestly say that I have experienced almost all of the issues the previous posters have had.I think the most difficult thing that family and friends at home do not understand is how difficult our lives away from home can be. That being said I still continue to make the sometimes 36 hr journey home to see my mom who over the years became more and more distant and now doesn't even know who I am. I still feel the excitement of seeing a familiar face at the airport(hopefully) to meet me....the last time they forgot to come and fetch me...... I know that in the not too distant future there will be no need to go back and it really scares me. Honestly I am not having a go at anyone as I said we have had it all believe me.I found in the long run honesty was always the best course of action and the last few trips I let people know exactly how I felt when they stepped way over the line. However when it came to parents I pulled back completely as who knows how long we will have them with us. The trips that really worked for us were the ones when EVERYONE went to a holiday destination together. Enjoy your summer girls wherever it may take you.

What amazed me was that the 3 judges had such a go at the Amercian viewers for voting Jessica off.The basis of the programme is that the public get to decide who gets voted off, not the judges. These judges seem to forget that it is the public who will buy the records go to the concerts etc. They are a talented bunch this year, my favorites are Phillip Phillips and Skyler. edited by Nomad on 20/04/2012

Be careful with mint,it can go mad with runner roots. I always plant mine in a bucket and plant the bucket in the ground. It does like water but don't overwater it . I had mine in semi shade. Thanks for the tips! I went ahead and planted the seedling straight into the ground, in a semi-shaded area. So far it's alive and healthy but not growing anymore either vertically or horizontally. The rosemary seedling, which I planted at the same time in a more shaded area, has finally begun to grow vertically. It looks healthy and eager to grow some more. How long ago did you plant it? What you could do is transfer it into a pot and by moving the pot around you can see which location it thrives in,then plant it in the ground.I used this little trick a no of times. All the best and enjoy your lemonade mint crush.....:)

I killed 3 rosemary plants this yearHow did you kill them? I got a small plant from the Farmers Market, transferred it to shady spot in garden. it hasn't grown much in 2 months. My friends said to not over-water the rosemary. is it true that mint needs lots of water? Be careful with mint,it can go mad with runner roots. Sounds like he went "canned hunting", a term used for those brave hunters who go big game hunting in a enclosure. They put these poor animals in a fenced off area where these great hunters go in and shoot them like fish in a barrel. Pity he didn't break more than his hip. BTW this is common pracrice in many countries in Africa, there are canned hunting farms where the animals are bred so that these hunters can come for their trophies. I know who I would land up hunting.

Debliz, thanks for the walk down memory lane.... I fall under the positively ancient category ! LOL When the first Ccards came out DH and I got one strictly for medical emergency reasons. The warnings from our parents about this plastic money were dire. It took a long time to convince the folks that plastic money was legit. Another thing that stands out for me was the bliss of life without the cell phone.I had a pager for business,it made me contactable but at a time and place which was convenient. The younger generation today are expected to be on duty 24/7 which IMHO is causing the stress related medical issues of the times. My fear is that with the way things are going with the texting generation, people are going to lose the art of sitting and having a faceto face conversatin with each other. Just the thoughts of a "positively ancient " person LOL:)

I think it is a mixture of ignorance and doing it on purpose. Bit of a thread drift but what really gets to me is the amount of spitting that goes on on the various professional sports and playing fields.Golf, cricket etc. We were sittiing outside a shopping mall the other day and a young girl came past and had a good old spit.I nearley lost my lunch. She was nicley dressed and looked very presentable. My DIL said it is normal to see nowdays. She then got hold of my GD showed her the gross mess on the floor and threatened her with her life if she ever did the same. Not only is it gross it is extremely unhealthy,so many germs eg. TB get spread this way.

I have been concerned recently by the amount of horses being euthanaised in the horse racing industry, but there is a big difference between the two horses being put down at the Grand National after falls from those giant sized jumps, and the three horses who died as a result of 'catastrophic breakdown' on the flat at Meydan in the Gold Cup. Generally, every time the Grand National is run, due to the size of the field, size of the jumps, there are always a handful of fatalities. This does not excuse it by any means, but there a obvious reasons for the broken legs etc that are sustained, and although they 'try' to make the jumps safer every year, by the nature of hurdles and jump racing, it is going to out more strain on the horse. What concerns me more are the increasing number of flat racing 'catastrophic breakdowns' that are occurring globally, with, it seems, little investigation as to the reasons why. Is it that these horses are being bred with lighter bones to make them that 1000th of a second faster, is it that ground isn't watered sufficiently to ensure that it is faster creating record times, is it overuse of legal drugs such as anti-inflammatories etc pre-race? The point is that no one really knows, and the horse racing industry seem to brush the subject under the carpet. Surely a horse shouldn't snap / shatter bones, purely by the action of galloping in a race - something they would have done thousands of times pre-race in training? I have also been following the changes in Kennel Club breeding rules in the UK following the documentary 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed' 3 years ago (which at the time led the BBC to cease television coverage of Crufts) and it seems breeding for healthy dogs, rather than ones that just meet the KC 'type' is gradually, slowly, happening. I wish there were a documentary team around to do a similar investigation into race horse health versus speed? Could bone density tests be done pre-race? Could ground be scientifically measured and minimum levels put in place for races? Surely with the money in the industry, and the millions that are potentially lost every time a horse dies on the track, these are straightforward measures that could be taken? Assisi you have really hit the nail on the head here. It seems it is less about the horses and more about the money.

We are talking about race horses - it is in their nature to run! You don't honestly believe that a horse would give that kind of performance if it didn't want to? e.g look at the horses in the Grand National, even if they haven't got a Jockey on them anymore they are still running along side the other riders jumping the hurdles, surely it has a choice now and still chooses to run and jump. I totally agree horses love to run,you just have to watch them in the wild.I have a problem with the issue of what happens to them once they are no longer paying for their keep.......

Before you preach about horse racing think about where your clothes come from, your fake handbags, your food etc etc. Some comments on this thread are inaccurate, irresponsible , ignorant, naive and offensive . As OD said how on earth do you know what I eat, wear and what I know about this industry. This is a forum I don't have to be a jockey/trainer/owner to have an opinion. However I have rescued MANY a horse from the track before it was to be sold on to a dreadful fate.

There have been many attemtps by the public to push Dubai to do something about the Zoo. From what I have gathered over the years, the Zoo people themselves are so overwhelmed with the increasing number of animals they have taken in with no where to put them. The people actually in charge of the day to day zoo facilities are known to be doing their absolute best with what they have to work with. The only time we ever hear from anyone who has has the ability to make it happen is when they are announcing for the upteenth time about a new plan that never comes to fruition. I can remember at least 3 or 4 major announcements over the years with pictures and maps etc -- not one has actually happened -- sadly. Agree, those running the zoo are doing all they can with what they have. Once again it boils down to money.Until it is financially viable for DXB to move the zoo ( I fear the crash of 2008 put this back a fair bit ) ie the value of the land it occupies,I fear things will stay the same.:(

In my perfect world zoos and ALL forms of making money from animals would be banned. From all I have heard all these "grand " horse racing events are nothing but an excuse for a big p*** up.Who gives a thought to the animlas welfare.......No One.......:( edited by Nomad on 14/04/2012

GM I get your point but poking fun when discussing a serious issue like Alzheimers,is not acceptable in any country. I think that some of you are getting a bit wound up about this - what I saw ( and there may have been more) was people actually lambasting the OP for her question in the first place and I have to say that I was totally SHOCKED to see someone ask a question like this. In my mind this was very insulting ! It demonstrated a lack of thought and sensitivity to what is a VERY common issue. Why anyone would not google something important ( to her) like this is beyond me. Google will throw up more than 11 MILLION sites in less than 2 minutes. Neither did I actually see anyone poking fun at Alzheimers sufferers but yes, at the OP. I am sure that everyone on here has some experience of Alzheimers and other dementias - they say that approx 25% of women will develop dementia after the age of 55. I myself have had 2 close relatives with this and have followed it through from the early stages to death in both cases. I have been part of a working group on legislation re this in Scotland for about 10 years or more now. Yes it is an awful disease and I repeat - I am stunned that someone should ask such a question. It is akin to asking is homosexuality catching or if your child will get Down's Syndrome by contact. edited by spongemonkey on 12/04/2012 SM some of the more offending posts have been deleted. When I first saw the thread to say I was surprised is an understatment, but I gave the OP the benefit of the doubt. As others have said some of us jump right in to offer words of help and advice, but some feel the need to have a go. With respect to EW versus Google it could be that the OP needed to" chat" to someone about the issue. Just my thoughts. edited by Nomad on 12/04/2012

My paternal (step) grandmother died of it...fortunately the very worst period was quite short but it's a worry when she's walking the streets in her nightie at 3 in the morning.. I'm finding the current portrayal of a sufferer on Coronation Street quite powerful...i know it's only a drama but for such a high profile programme to be featuring a character with Alzheimers, i think can only be a good thing for raising awareness... Thoughts with the OP and anyone else who is affected by this.... So true Sue62,it was always thought of as an older person disease, so seeing such a young woman suffer on Corrie is an eye opener. All the research I have done concurs that the pre 65 Alzheimers seems to be the genetic one, which gives me hope, as Mom and Gran were in their 80's. @ shaks thinking of you across the miles.

Nomad, I don't find it acceptable making fun at a person asking a genuine question he/she is innocently unaware of. GM sorry wasn't having a go at you :) just feel sometimes that the excuse of "it is the UAE" is used too often.I have lived many years in the ME and have never encountered remarks in person that some feel they can get away with on a forum. I think posting back and forth here we have given the offenders food for thought AND throught our own experiences given others an insight into the disease. N

Thanks ladies,my screen just went blank, no explination. It just seems so sad that a thread that could have been so informative to those that don't know much about Alzheimers, has to be blocked. If those who have pocked fun at the OP had ever been touched by this terrible disease, they would hang their heads in shame. Thank you JoyceB and D Blonde for your posts. My Grandmother and now my mother both suffer/ed from Alzheimers, so who knows what is in store for me. As you say I think I will forgo the test as I would prefer not to know.Instead I try to live life every day to it's fullest. To the OP there is a lot of information out there on the internet,I have spent hours just reading up on the disease and the research that is being done. There is a wide network of organisations suppoting Alzheimers patients and their families in the US, just google it for her specific area. From my own experience it is us the family who have the most adjustments to make, my mom ,althought very depressed at times, is in a world of her own where she knows none of us. To those touched by this terrible thief of a disease my heart and prayers goes out to you all. N XX edited by Nomad on 11/04/2012

Hi Lynn, Please stop giving her milk it is not good for them and will only upset her tummy.Do You know if she has been spayed, if not she will be having kittens pretty soon. They breed at a unbelieveable rate in the ME. Don't be scared of her she will "teach" you how to handle her and pretty soon it will be old hat. The fact that she has been rescued and used to be cared for by the previous tenant means she has been domesticated and reliant on humans.Give her dry cat biscuits and water in a cool shady area in the yard. Hopefully hubby comes on board,it could be the start of something very special....... N

At this time of the year all the rescue groups are full to capacity. Have you asked around if the cat belongs to someone in the area or put up found flyers with the cats picture etc. Put a photo on dubizzle and on here, maybe it is someones lost cat. If it were me I would beg a carrier from Feline Friends or any of the other cat rescue groups and get the catto a vet to see if it has a chip. While there see if it has been neutered if not try and come to an arrangement with the vet about having it fixed if you cannot find an owner. The most important thing is to keep loads of water on hand for the cat during the summer. Are you feeding it? In Dubai there is no SPCA or Humane Soc the groups that do rescue etc. are volunteers who rely on public donations to carry on their vital work of rescuing abandoned and abused animals. There is no facility as such and volunteers foster and care for the animals in their own homes. It is up to you how involved you want to become in rescuing this little scrap. As I always say there is a bush network out there and they always "know" which door to knock on.;) All the best. N

Hi Aryanwynn. :) I love seeing people really do their research before committing to a pet. :D Firstly...what type of terrier are you looking at? While I like to think the biggest part of a dog's temperament and behaviour are set in the way they are raised, there's also a pretty major genetic component in terriers. If you're thinking of a Jack Russell for example (my favourite :) ), I really think it would be very, very difficult to raise one successfully in an apartment. All of the other small terriers I can think of are long-haired (Aus silky etc) but all possibly far more suitable for apartment living. So...if it's a JRT, I'd wait until you settle elsewhere or move to a villa with a garden. ;) If your family really can't wait (and I get that too!) then your most ethical choice is to source one from a good, ethical breeder overseas. When we thought we were going to get a JRT (my hubby also very opinionated on the topic!) it took me months to find a breeder I liked the sound of, and then she put me through the hoops before even agreeing to put me on the waiting list for one of her dogs...LOVE that! Essentially, a good (ethical) breeder will have great reservations about selling to someone they have never met, and even greater reservations about sending a puppy overseas. If you find someone willing to ship a dog next month, they don't care about their pups and probably don't look after their animals well and probably don't really focus on breed stock genetics. PLEASE do not buy from any UAE pet shops!!!!!!! Or that HIDEOUS Europuppy!!!!! If you want to source a local young dog needing a good home, advertise everywhere! Dubizzle & let all the vets know etc. Of course, that's a great option (lucky dog to get you!) but then you're back to not knowing the dog's history or genetics. Good luck A. There's a lucky, lucky pup out there somewhere for you. Greenish great post.To OP wonderful to see such a responsible outlook about getting a pet.The right one will find you. edited by Nomad on 10/04/2012

I personally rarely drink,a rare G&T on a hot summer evening, but when we have a do with alcohol I make sure that everyone has a safe ride home. I have been know to confiscate keys and personally drive the person home. My kids had a system during their "party years", if ANYONE of their friends had too much to drink ,no matter what time of the day or night or wherever they were they would fetch the boozer and get them safely home. As a family we have tried to make a difference. edited by Nomad on 08/04/2012

ophelia sorry wasn't aware that your departure was immenant. I was faced with the same situation when we left DXB,literally 3 weeks to countdown and "outside baby" arrived.A massive ginger and white fellow with a tipped ear, def someones cat. Put posters up everywhere contacted FF but no one came forward. As SueB suggested I made the very painful decision that if I could not find him a home before we left I would have to put him down. He was just too reliant on humans and had been someones pet. I networked like mad around the neighbourhood, drove people nuts in fact, I found him a suitable home and got him settled a week before we left. The unfortunate part is as Sue said it is kitten season and they are literally falling out the sky ( happening where we are as well ) and it makes it more of a challenge. I can honestly say that the cat issue stressed me out more than anything else to do with the move.Hopefully you can find a happy ending. Let us know how you get on , and all the very best. N

Maybe she doesn't "feel" loved or welcome in the home.I have had many cats thorught my life, some showed more affection than others. You could also be expecting her to behave like the cat you have lost. I sincerely believe that animals are placed in our lives at the right place and the right time. With constant love and affection even the most hard nosed of cats will come around. To me it sounds like the "presents" are upsetting you.Unfortunately cats will be cats and they do catch birds, maybe this is how she has been surviving until she was fortunte enough to find your home. With regards to re location back to OZ I always suggested to adoptive parents ( I fostered many in DXB ) that they put a small amount away every month in a kitty fund to cover the costs when the time came. Believe me I am not having a go, I have cats who make me feel they are doing me a favour by letting me live with them :) but I still love them for who they are. She sounds like a lovely girl and if you are determined not to keep her then you can set about trying to find her a new home.Hopefully in that time you fall in love:) All the best N

I work at Al Futtaim Motors and there has been a grey persian cat in the basement/vehicle storage area of the Toyota showroom in Festival City for quite a few days. We think it may have been lost for some time as it's tail has become somewhat matted. It's a beautiful persian, I don't know whether male of female, but she's crying a lot, so if anyone around this area may have lost their cat and this one could be yours, please contact security at AFM Head Office on 04 206 6000. Kezzler it is so good of you to care about this poor cat. Please contact Feline Friends for advice.I am no longer in Dubai so cannot give you any practical help.It is important that this poor cat be groomed as has been mentioned the hair gets so badly matted that the animal is in terrible pain. If you don't hear from FF would it be at all possible for you to get hold of a pet carrier and take it to a nearby vet.Tell them the circumstances and ask for assistance. Hopefully someone on here can help or advise you further,in the meantime make sure it has something to eat and give it plenty of water.

You have made some awful and offensive statements about women who have children, so the issue here is not that you are offering support to the OP, the problem is that you have tried to offer support by insulting those who lead a life you clearly do not understand. And instead of acknowledging that fact, you continue to attempt to justify your statements. This is a public forum and we are all entitled to our opinions but surely you understand why some might take offense to your comments. No one ever said being a mum is easy, and yes, we do appreciate supportive friends and welcome spa days like any woman would (whether or not they have a child)..that does not mean we are unhappy with our lives or our decisions. It is possible to provide support and reassurance to the OP without causing offense to others and unfortunately you haven't done that. europuppy don't ship them until 13 weeks...same as any reputable breeder ANYONE who is prepared to send a puppy half way around the world, without having MET the prespective new owners is not ethical. How do they know if the poor pup will be used in a puppy mill. I know ethical breeders who inspect the new home their puppies are going to,you earn the right to own one of their anilmals. To OP think very carefully before you jump in and import a puppy, as Choc01 says so many have been brought to Dubai and just dumped when their owner leaves.

No, I dont consider stating some of my personal reasons for enjoying my life gloating when discussed in a thread titled "single and 40", started by a person who seemed t need reassurance she wasn't weird. I agree, many times breeders is used negatively, but its also used casually about people who have children. Is calling a woman a cow negative? Sometimes yes, otherwise "you silly cow!" is just playful. And triple agree that many people aren't meant to have children. Some of us realize this beforehand, others unfortunately when it's too late. edited by lamali on 01/04/2012 Lamali writing as a mother of 2,grandmother of 2 .One of my children early 30s has decided to marry later in life if at all and doesn't want children. I have never heard the word breeders uttered when referring to people and can honestly say that I felt it uncalled for. Yes maybe it is bantered about among a bunch of single goup of friends along with the word cow etc. but it is always wise to remember on EW there are a wide range of cultures, ages and views represented. To many including me it is just rude. In an earlier post I also sent my support to the OP and reading your follow up post so have you. However you made a statement that offended some so IMO unless you remove it you must take the consequences.

BMAP, your spreadsheet was invaluable to us, and am v.glad to see that you have not let one (insert adjective) woman stop you from being of possible help to others. Ditto

Damas was my pet peeve in the garden.Neighbours Damas craked our garden wall foundation. I planted Poinciana ( Flame Trees ) they did not grow as quickly as the Damas but within two years they were well on their way.The only negative was they drop their leaves around Dec /Jan and it is a bit of a clean up every day or so.However the beautiful flowers and greenery for the rest of the year was worth it. I planted them around the house in strategic places and it really helped to keep the place cooler in the summer. The garden souk staff will sell you anything to make a buck, but if you grill them enough about certain plants they do eventually give you the lowdown. Another thing I noticed was it didn't matter what I did with the grass or what kind of tree it was under,it always died in the shady areas. In the end we paved the areas under the trees and put planters in. Happy Damas free gardening ladies.;) N
