Thanks for the replies ladies. Cherpie the reason I asked was because your post was quite vague and after spending ages trying to find a definitive answer I came back on here. I have a niece who blames vaccinations for her daughters autism and won't hear a word against her conclusions. In her case it comes down to having someone/something to blame and I like to have facts when the subject comes up.

Not yet Daza only once summer arrives. Apparently the hives get covered and hibernate in the winter. You have to feed them a surgery mixture so they survive. I am so excited but nervous at the same time but determined to have my own honey and introduce more bees to the area.

One objection might be that some vaccines contain strains from aborted fetuses. Thumb me down all you want, just stating! A question to those on the forum who may be able to answer (andreasmullet ?). This post really bothered me and after a bit of a search on Google came up with so many different articles ,some self interest statements. A number point out that strains were taken from 2 fetuses in1962 and 1966. Don't want to be led up a internet garden path but would like to know. Also not debating any issues related to the this, just want the facts. edited by Nomad on 08/01/2015

While we're on the subject - the word "organic", in relation to food, is purely a marketing term. It has no scientific basis. And if you think that buying organic food means that you're avoiding pesticides and Velma I totally don't understand your statement. What do you mean? The whole premise of organic food is grown without the use of pesticides. What do you mean then? There is a debate going on in Canada about the ' actual ' effect of chemicals eg. neonics on insects, particularly bees, versus natural pesticides which as VD says have to be very strong. We live in farming country so I have taken a keen interest. Once again it is all about the mighty $, it is really difficult to get the actual truth from many of the studies carried out. As you say VD the Organic route is not policed as it should be and in a lot of cases they get away with charging exorbitant prices for products that could be just as toxic as chemically treated crops. I have decide to do my bit and will be installing 6 beehives this summer.....hope the chemicals from the neighbours, or their keeper ( he he ) won't kill them. edited by Nomad on 08/01/2015

I am passionate about this topic, however by far the most frustrating thing is I don't know if it's possible to change the point of view of an anti-vaxer? They are equally passionate, (even if they are ill-informed). I'll keep beating my drum.... Me too. What I can't get my head around is how the anti-vaxers ( first time I have heard the name, very apt ) can see the results their stubborn denial causes yet ,as andreasmullet ( excellent post by the way ) points out, these same parents will trust the Medical profession in other areas. Recently a reporter went undercover in Canada to investigate Homeopathic ( before anyone jumps on me I see a homeopath for menopause so haven't anything against them ) doctors who were passively swaying parents against immunization.I was shocked rigid at their advice. My mom lived through the polio outbreak when schools were shut down for months and a friend of hers caught it. She wore those dreadful leg braces and had a lame arm for the rest of her life .As a child just seeing her trying to walk was enough to convert me for life. For many it is a case of even though I am proven wrong , I am still right ! edited by Nomad on 07/01/2015

I have a question. Are the parents who are against immunizations mostly concerned about the possible link to autism? (which Jenny McCarthy seemed to influence a lot, but then again, she has since retracted, no?) Or have the "suspect" additives in the immunizations become more nefarious? I'm asking as I have 2 nephews on the spectrum, and I have been told that autism spectrum diagnosis could reach 1 in 4 by 2050....and I wonder WTH is causing it. So worrying :( DH and I were waxing the other night about how in the 70's and 80's, we were all vaccinated, and many of our parents smoked (with the windows up in cars with no seatbelts), we never wore helmets biking, and lived through the introduction of the fast food and microwave dinners era...and we all seem to be fine. Gen X and such. But it is this next generation that seem to have all of these health issues. A little off track and whatnot, but really what is up? Is it simply that more statistics are being done? Are there more diagnoses these days, whereas in our era, there was no autism spectrum, per say? I tend to agree that the ' increased numbers ' in autism cases are indeed a result of more accurate diagnosing. Having grown up in the 50's and 60's looking back at my schooling and please I DONT mean to offend anyone but I had a friend who was considered slow followed by raised eyebrows. Looking back now she would have been considered on the autistic spectrum. These children were sent to 'special' schools and kept very much out of the way. Today there is more acceptance integration and recognition. Personally I can't even bear to look at JMC as how many mothers were influenced by her ill informed and reckless constant spouting against immunization. How do they look at them selves in the mirror each day. As you say Lolacat this is a first world issue, families in third world countries would give the shirt off their backs to have access to immunization. edited by Nomad on 06/01/2015

Sorry I am no longer in Dubai, but I used to foster for Feline Friends. You could also contact JAV cats or Bin Kitty Collective, their details are online. They are desperate for foster homes so explain your intentions to them that you would prefer to foster initially and can they assist you. When wanting to adopt especially a dog most rescue groups are very cautious about adopting out to those who have had no experience with pets. Their primary concern is to find a loving caring permanent home for often times abused and abandoned animals. I think it is wonderful that you are wanting to open your home to a pet, you won't be disappointed as animals give unconditional love and companionship. Hopefully Izzy will be along shortly as she is actively involved in fostering and could pass on some more info.

So the OP (since removed and deleted her post) responded with a solution after Di offered advice? Confused. Maybe after another cup of coffee I'll catch on :) Actually I am glad you shared, Di, because I swear, I got the worst haircut yesterday :( Doesn't seem to matter if I pay 150 dhs or 350 dhs, no one has been able to cut it nicely consistently. I went in with photos, and a style I knew could be achieved with my length and hair type, as it is the one my hairdresser at home has no problem delivering. Nope! Maybe in 6 months when this mullet, or whatever it is grows out, I'll check out Yanni. Oh Beebers I laughed so at the vision of someone walking around with a mullet in 2015 !! Hope Yanni can de mullet you.

Yes a studio would be fine for either a cat or a dog,the important thing to remember is that some breeds of dog do need a garden or space to run. Cats on the other hand are more adaptable to being inside only. As you have never had a pet it might be a good idea to foster one first before committing to an animal for the rest of its life. Contact any of the rescue organizations for advice on fostering and/ or adoption and they will walk you through it. All the best. ETA just re read your post, a puppy is the same as taking on a baby and unless you are at home an awful lot of the time don't take on a puppy. edited by Nomad on 04/01/2015

Following this post - I got checked and had a mole removed that I have been looking at for the last 10 years! I've had it checked over and over. Finally decided I was just sick of worrying about it, so had it out. What do you know - results in today - pre malignant. 6 monthly checks from now on. THANK YOU EXPAT WOMAN! Oh Stix I am so glad you caught it in time. My DH trusted what the original doctor said and was nearly too late. Beebers glad that the mole was a splinter ! but do get the others re checked and mapped if you can, it is also really important to have faith in the diagnosis and treatment. DH has to be mapped every 6 months because of his history and his family history , MIL had skin cancer, I have a visual every year. edited by Nomad on 31/12/2014

I sincerely hope you can secure her release soon. As a side note VelmaDoo ( MG ?) I always appreciate your point of view, straight from the hip ! and you tell it as it is. Not that I will always agree with what you say BUT I have cojonas to say I disagree. The thread I had recently got so utterly silly and childish with the thumbing and was so inappropriate, if you don't like what a person posts either pass onto to another or say why.

I'm answering a question and personally, when reading the thread title I was expecting something different. The thread title is exactly how I feel today and I won't apologize for it.....even if some were expecting something different. You are very wise not to wait. DH was told by a doctor that the brown mark on the left side of his face was nothing to worry about. We happened to get it checked out while at home and our old GP said it didn't look good. He was referred to a skin specialist and was operated on the very next day. Skin grafts and one sided facelift got rid of the cancer but he has to go for check ups every 6 months. Now wears a hat when outside and never goes outside without sunscreen even when there is snow on the ground. Hopefully it is just a normal mole, let us know how you get on. edited by Nomad on 20/12/2014

Suzy I know exactly how you feel :( insert a big hug..... I had the same situation when my Mom was dying and unfortunately I did not make it back to say goodbye. Family said the most dreadful things to me not once considering how I felt and that I had to fly 1/2 way around the world leaving a husband who had just been diagnosed with a brain aneurism. Unless you have lived an expat life you cannot understand the challenges. Over the years I have lost so many friends back home as they had no clue of what a challenge it is to keep up a family and friends on both sides of the world happy. I think your ' friend ' who equated $ to memories is a thoughtless twit, unless she has walked in your shoes she has no right to put pressure on you. Would she be able to up and leave children and home, fly abroad at the drop of a hat. The fact that you have made a video and are in contact is wonderful and the best you can do at the moment. Possibly plan to get home to see her as soon as is reasonable for your personal circumstances. You know what you feel in your heart and no one has the right to judge you. Sending prayers and positive thoughts your way. edited by Nomad on 14/12/2014 edited by Nomad on 14/12/2014 edited by Nomad on 14/12/2014

hafsanaz is the rental lease in your name because your family Visa is in your name ? If this is the case you are in the driving seat. Take control of this bully now ,it WILL NOT get better over time. I have witnessed family members (female ) who have been bullied for 50 + years and sent to an early grave as they weren't even allowed to have their own thoughts in later years. I would seriously be considering divorce as you are being treated as a cash cow and not a wife and equal cherished partner in this relationship. Look after yourself and your child and take control before he has you believing the insults he is flinging at you. I will send a prayer for you.

Redrec - so glad you posted this thread in the first place, as I said some times we have to call it as it is. Something to be said about the justice system in Uganda, in some parts of the world it would have been the Dad who would have been facing more serious charges than the nanny. Glad to hear the wee one is fine, hopefully she won't remember too much of the incident. edited by Nomad on 25/11/2014 edited by Nomad on 25/11/2014

I didn't see the video, nor am I going to. However your thread title and suggestion of keeping an eye on your children even if being watched by a loving nanny strikes me as somewhat prejudiced and unfair. 68% of child abuse is inflicted by family members. So don't just watch your nannies, always look out for children around you. https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-child-abuse Totally agree but the particular incident is about a nanny beating a harmless child , it is dreadful to watch BUT a wake up call for anyone who leaves their children with a nanny. Personally I don't find the thread title to be in any way prejudiced or unfair, it says it as it is. edited by Nomad on 25/11/2014

It is so important to know what is happening when you as a parent are not around. Thank goodness the father had the footage, who knows how many caregivers get away with abuse like this. Why don't you appreciate other nationalities speaking English and maybe throwing in a couple of funny words instead of being a bunch of condescending critics. Try speaking Arabic, Indian, Chinese or German and see how you all do for a change. Certainly hope you are not referring to my post. Let me clarify. Japlish is an accepted term in Japan and is a combination of the two, not condescending in any way . In the bigger cities it is easy to find someone who has a smattering of English when trying to communicate, however in the more remote areas it is not generally spoken. I immersed myself in Japanese culture while there and in return my Japanese friends were very eager to speak English. We started a small book club ,our first book was Memoirs of a Gheisha, we would read together , they would stop me for clarification and I asked questions about their culture as written in the book. Win win for all. edited by Nomad on 21/11/2014

http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic123501-sayings-you-cant-stand.aspx?Page=2 The word 'riddled' always makes me feel slightly queasy! I agree with Sandfly. I am an English teacher and have also done some freelance writing, editing etc so naturally my work requires that I teach Standard English and proper grammar. However, language is a constantly evolving, unique human experience. 'Your good name' is intended to mark respect. I am currently attempting to learn Dutch and hope to be fluent one day but time constraints (plus advancing years) have meant that I am struggling to build momentum. We consider ourselves lucky that English is widely spoken or even attempted by so many non-native speakers. I had a very different experience in Japan and just about got by with a smattering of Japanese and the many linguistic joys of the hybrid Japlish! Steven Pinker makes some interesting points about language and grammar here: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/77732/grammar-puss-steven-pinker-language-william-safire edited by veganprincess on 20/11/2014 So glad you mentioned your ' good name ' when we first arrived in the ME, nearly 25 years back, it was considered very respectful . Ah yes Japlish , while living there I resorted to flash cards with pictures as we were stationed way down south where the only European people some had ever seen were in the movies.
