OP so sorry to read about your predicament. You have got some really good and practical advice from other posters......take it now and move forward as some of said advice comes from experience. Also take into account that advice from an independent third party without a bone in the fight can be very helpful. Sending you hugs....

While I can't fault the local carrier!I must agree that the UK carrier was fantastic when I last flew home to bury my Mom. I was as sick as a hound outbound and honestly cc constantly checking up on me.When they found out the reason for my trip one lady in particular actually sat down next to me to chat. Inbound I was inconsolable carrying the world on my shoulders and they kindly changed my seat to make sure I had access to the washroom ( when my nerves get the better of me I tend to throw up constantly yuk...) I did write to their customer service dept to commend the service but sadly never got a reply. RuthM hope you can get this sorted, ground staff my be more sympathetic at check on. edited by Nomad on 29/11/2013

Definitely acceptable. It's a long procedure to go to the changing rooms only to find it was a waste of a journey especially in Dubai where the toilets are never close by. I don't see why it makes anyone cringe, your not sniffing anything, mind your own business. Even before I was a mum it never bothered me, you do what you have to do and its as simple as that. If you don't like it look away or get a table away from any potential bum sniffers. But what if the bum sniffers choose to sit around your table? Order the farting steak.....that should clear the area !

Well I don't lift up my plate to sniff suspiciously at my steak so I don't know why the mum cant be a little more discreet. If your steak is farting you might be ordering it too rare ;) Its a new kind of mad cow disease! Sitting in bed with a bad cold sniffing and spluttering away trying to cough and laugh.......

OP yes it is acceptable however I tried to rather bend down rather than lift the bum in the air, tried to be a little less noticeable. My heart just goes out to the family,my paternal step grandmother married my grandad only two years after my grandmother died. She was a wonderful lady and the only gran I knew but I am sure if my grandad had of waited 10 years my aunt still would never been able to accept the marriage.A whole other story !!! Would like to add that it may be a good idea for dad to be a little 'discreet' about the over night stays, maybe let the family get to know the lady and not be seen to be moving the new family in that quickly. They sound like wonderful children and in time I am sure they see this lady is not a replacement for mom but a new chapter in dad's life. They are so fortunate to have a really good listener in you:)

Did you get the number plate? I got a photo of the back of he car. Did you gain the drivers permission first? lol I didn't take a picture of the occupants of the car, only the street and the car itself sitting on lines in its very own newly created third lane ;-) Shame though as he was also on his mobile phone. edited by RuthM on 21/11/2013 Really interested to hear how this plays out RuthM in view of the 'other incident' where the guy was filmed beating on the fellow he was upset with over the traffic issue. Don't mention pets...........lol Yes i think a "I used to live in Dubai once" forum is a great idea........might thin the place out a bit. So as an 'ex expat in DXB' anything I have to contribute is cluttering up the place or is less valuable advice/information?. I don't think it is right to write about the owners of either the dogs or the boarding kennel on a public forum for many reasons. Saying that, there is a thing called contraception, there is a registry office and many weddings that do not need the facilities of a fancy hotel and there are laws protecting business from debtors. Whilst on an emotional level one may believe an animal is priceless from a business perspective a rescue dog is worth nothing on paper. Once a debt reaches beyond the defined level of value of goods then it normally becomes the property of the company owed the debt. Most business will have placed contracts in place stating this, even without not many courts would disagree. The owner of the business has every right to sell or do as he see fits in order to regain costs lost. What is the case exactly here? Seriously what is it? What will a legal case gain, resurrection of 4 dogs from the grave? The dogs are gone the kennel owner has lost several thousands of Dhs and the owners, well i' not exactly not sure from the information posted on here. There are thousands of issues going on in the world that deserve far more print ink than this one. True about fighting a case against the kennels.....figure of 50 k being kicked about.....can you imagine how much that would help rescue groups,it certainly won't bring these fur babies back.

It once again boils down to commitment to your pets. While in DXB and fostering I came across so many folk who because they felt sorry for the animals just kept on taking more and more in not thinking long term. When the doodie hit the fan said animals were just turfed out or just left on the street. Now I am not saying this couple just left the animals on the street but at some point you HAVE to take responsibility for your own animals and it seems in this case they were hoping against hope that the co would just continue to look after the dogs. This being said the boarding kennels could have been more humane and I am sure would have been able to have the dogs taken over by any no of rescue organizations. What upsets me is what they went though before they were put down, months in the kennels away from their homes and then a trip to death row. I have had to make VERY hard decisions about my pets in the past that nearly broke my heart BUT I made those decisions because there was no other alternative ,the difference was that I was with the fur baby till the end, I owed at least that to them.:'( edited by Nomad on 21/11/2013

A remedy my granny used that works. Collect eggs shells put them in a bag grind with a rolling pin. This will give you little shards of shell. Spread then in the flower beds on the top of the soil. The snails avoid them as they cut the underbelly and the shells do compost back into the soil.....win win ;)

It is all about balance. If the kids have done their chores and homework ( def not rushed ) then yes kids should have down time and if it is Xbox then that's fine. However it is important to limit the time they play as it can very easily become addictive. My DIL had to put her foot down with my GD as she was getting too involved with her games to the exclusion of all else and she is only 6. Now she works towards the goal of getting a half hour a day and if there is any glitch along the way poof no game until mom says OK.It has worked out well as this is now a bargaining tool.

My Hubby's company has had a collection and achieved quite alot of money for the fund. I do hope all the people get all the help and get them back on their feet, must be so awful for everyone living in the Philippines. I am all for giving to charity, I do worry that some agencies are corrupt, I so remember giving a cash amount to a particular charity for the tsumami, and afew months later, they said they was not using all the fund, but saving it for another disaster in future..... I gave for that disaster, its not their choice to pick and choose, and even thou I know there are honest people out there.... I do have my reservations, especially with cash payments. Nevertheless, I hope and pray that supplies are sent asap, and help relieve the people of their terrible misery... very sad.... Know how you feel,I also gave to the tsunami funds for Japan and was so mad when I read that some of the funds had been allocated to the area of 'Whale Research'.I was so mad ( this goes against every fibre of my being and can honestly say it has tainted my view when donating. A friend did a bit of research years back ,in North America ,about just how much gets to the charities once the 'administrative' cost have been deducted.......the Salvation Army came out on top ,almost 90% got to the recipient. Not saying this is the case here but it pays to be cautious and know who you are supporting.I have made a donation and can only hope it lands up where it is supposed to. edited by Nomad on 16/11/2013 edited by Nomad on 16/11/2013

As the other posters have said buying a puppy in DXB is not advisable. PLEASE read past threads about this subject it has been discussed so many times....... Not forcing the issue but by rescuing you actually save two lives, the dog you are rescuing and making space for a new rescue. An animal is a commitment for the rest of its life so do consider the costs of having one as an expat. The cost of repatriation home or to your next destination can be very steep.DXB streets are littered with the results of people who bought the dog/cat and when the time comes to leave the cost outweighed the love and commitment to said animal.

RuthM you make a valid argument. In one of the places we stayed a little boy came to play with my toddler( thought I had got to 'know' the family ) he picked up one of our cats by the tail and before I could get to him he had bashed it against the wall. I actually went to the police and to say they were less than interested is an understatement.DH and I then went back to the parents and warned them that they had a HUGE problem and to get help. Of course their little darling was having a few issues but we were over reacting. I still wonder where this little monster ended up and would not be surprised to see his mugshot somewhere for murder.

Sadly this is common no matter where you live. A puppy was found in a Saskatchewan work camp with severs burns to his face. Some a******e had doused his face in lighter fluid and set him alight. Thank goodness he was found by a guy who gave a dam and this poor wee soul was rushed to Calgary where his ears were amputated and he is receiving treatment for the burns. He is in foster care at the mo but 30 odd families have come forward to offer him a home. (Sorry I have tried to include a link but alas no success but you you can access it on google) I have worked with animal rescue most of my adult life and have come to the conclusion that it is a learned behaviour ,what the parents teach the children is what is passed on. My DIL couldn't stand cats when she met my son........he had 5 at the time.DILs family had never had cats as her mother couldn't stand them but my son was non negotiable love me love my cats......today I have yet to see a person who loves cats more.

I just think tattoos are offensive !! lol I don't understand why people have tattoos in a foreign language, if they do not speak or understand that language. I am not against them though. :-) Because it's more aesthetically pleasing. My brother has his wifes name and the names of his children all in Japanese - they look fantastic. In English it, would look horrid. So long as it doesn't say Number 32 - Salmon Maki Roll - it's all good. edited by FairyDust on 12/11/2013 Not a tattoo fan myself but my DS has a small tasteful one of a flag ,his country of birth, his body and all that ..... FD had such a laugh re Salmon maki Roll ,when I lived in Japan in the summer my Japanese friend would translate some of the priceless sayings people ( not Japanese )had tattooed on themselves.I used to be stitches ,she used to get quite annoyed that they hadn't gone to the trouble of researching the characters. Never feel guilty for doing what is right for your family, for the family YOU are responsible for. Nomad, I know how it feels. I just buried my mom a few weeks ago, very suddenly. Makes you ask yourself, should I have done this, or that.. But I realised it doesn't matter now'. It's not family that made me feel that way though, and I have found peace knowing nothing happens without reason or wisdom, as much as we can't always see it. I would be hurt if my family would try to make me feel guilty for not being there as they expected of you. Thanks for the kind words Maroosh I am still dealing with the cruel words but my faith is VERY strong and this carries me. It was my father who said it ..... We have never spoken since. As you say do right by those you are responsible for it is not possible to divide yourself in two....this not only applies to expat life but life in general. By they way how are the wedding plans going ?;)

Didn't see the posts causing such upset and I can't imagine anyone using the heartbreak of a miscarriage to be nasty! One of my DH's uncles turned up at our DD's wedding wearing the same old brown jumper he wears day in day out. He'd pulled a half dead rose and stuck it in his equally shabby ancient jacket and sat scowling all day long! We just shook our heads smiling as uncle Ben is in his eighties and a typical grumpy old man. Once he'd eaten his meal, he wanted to go home! Have a wonderful day and enjoy every minute. x Sorry a bit of a drift...... JoyceB your story brings back memories of my Pop he was just like ' uncle Ben ' .Gran used to go mental when he would refuse to polish the back of his shoes..' Who the heck sees the back anyway ' and off he would go in his tatty jumper, stained cap and frayed jacket, pipe clenched ,to weddings, funerals and the like...... All the while he had a whole row of new suits in moth balls in the cupboard, loved him to bits though.

What is important right now is your family nucleus in DXB. They come first ,what you have left over can be shared with the rest of your family. I spent 30+ years as an expat and tried desperately to divide myself equally ..........it doesn't work !!! I worried constantly, run myself ragged trying to ' be there ' for everyone and all I got for my trouble was blame. Right up until the day I buried my mother I was told ' you weren't even here when she died '.Broke my heart:'( Please don't do what I did ,no matter what I did no one was happy .At least by looking after your bubs and DH ,putting them first, your family will be happy and you will be a lot healthier and I am sure have a better delivery and pregnancy. Love hoots idea about getting them to come and see you, a good comeback to the ' I want to get to know my niece ', but be prepared for the ' well we can't really travel right now ' which is the standard reply I got ALL the time despite offering business class tickets and paying for EVERYTHING while family visited. This is a battle many never win and unless you decide what is important to you it will just go on and on. Hope it all works out.XXX

Neamhi your post just broke my heart.....so wonderful that you have family visits to the grave and your little angel lives on. A great big cyber HUG to you my cyber friend xxx Sirocco you have really hit the nail on the head, there is just not enough discussion about the possibility of c sections many I know don't even want to think about it but all possibilities should be discussed. My gynae, a relative, was a very no nonsense man lay all the cards on the table told me exactly how and why he would do vag as opposed to C section or the other way around. I had absolute faith in him even though I didn't like him, told me not to expect special treatment because we were family !! As if, I was so wary of him I wouldn't have dared ..... TDB I am sure that things will go a lot easier with your next birth as you have the advantage of knowing what happened last time and I am sure you have covered all these bases with you doctor. One thing we shouldn't forget is even with vag births mothers can still fell 'disconnected' which has a lot to do with PPD and not just c section births. TP OP I would definitely also look into the possibility of PPD not down playing the fact that you feel a failure for not being able to have a 'Normal' birth but just looking t it from a different angle. edited by Nomad on 07/11/2013

There are probably many of the old time posters, who like me look in from time and to time, and occasionally post but more often sit on their hands and log off in despair. There appears to be a clique now of posters with a relatively hostile attitude to those expats who are more recent and less locally involved than they are. Which is a great shame for a site claiming to be free and friendly. Hi LT hope all is well......yes I get the same feeling but as you say it is free, not so much of the friendly some days. I too sit on my hands some days but always feel if I can help or roll a stone out of someone's way or just share an experience then I will post, too bad if some think that because I have moved I shouldn't contribute.....;) I feel the ME is part of my make up ,who I am today and I will always be 'connected'....

One of the most beautiful weddings I ever attended was in a small country church reception in the school hall, tacky streamers, jam jars with a few wild flowers shoved in on top of plastic table cloths......great home cooked food and a bride in a borrowed wedding dress. Not having a go at TDB or any prospective brides, but honestly feel that the costs of weddings and expectations of the couples and their families are spiralling out of control.

It is YOUR and DHs day you have done all you can now sit back don't try and micro manage. You have got some really good tips take those that make sense to you.If you don't allow yourself to enjoy the day you have just wasted all the money time and effort you have put into your blessing. To heck with everyone else YOU enjoy YOUR day. I must say however that the days of people RSVPing seems to be a thing of the past, really bad manners in my opinion. My DS and DIL also had 2 weddings because of relatives kicking off........had pretty much the same outcome as you but DIL was amazing ,water off a ducks back ,she enjoyed both...... Have a wonderful blessing and enjoy yourself.:)

Not sure if it is the same one mrsb but I have just found an old invoice I went to Osteopathic Health Centre in Uptown Mirdiff , I seem to recall they had another office in or near Jumeira. They honestly were amazing ,I wish I could find the same care in Canada ..... edited by Nomad on 02/11/2013 edited by Nomad on 02/11/2013
