I just wanted to share my positive experience with Dr. Ali Tukmechy. I'm eternally grateful to the ones who initially recommended him to me. I'm still living in Denmark but have been shedding like crazy the last many months. Needless to say, I can't even blame Dubai's water for this since it also happens when I'm in Denmark and not just during visits to Dubai. Blood tests from Denmark are fine. I've tried Nizoral, 'The Hair Clinic' and waiting for months to see useless dermatologists in Denmark who don't even bother to REALLY check my scalp. Lately I've been getting really strong allergic reactions to most shampoos, including Nizoral. The only 'shampoo' I've been able to use is the Arabic/Syrian Aleppo soap called 'al ghar' that I buy here in Denmark in Arabic supermarkets. I don't know why I haven't found this soap in Dubai yet. Dr. Ali is the first dermatologist ever who didn't make me feel that I was complaining about hair loss for no reason (unlike Danish doctors). He took a REALLY long time checking my scalp and told me to get the anti-dandruff shampoo they sell in pharmacies. It's a blue bottle called Seba-something. It contains the same as Nizoral but doesn't dry the hair (read: ruin!) as Nizoral. He also prescribed some other vitamins and some capsules to use twice a week. So far I've only been using the shampoo and I'm so pleased with the results already. In fact, I went to a (useless) Danish dermatologist yesterday since I had been waiting two months for that appointment. He told me my scalp looked healthy, but I really doubt that I've already recovered from that 'severe deep dandruff' condition Dr. Tukmechy diagnosed me with. My point is that if Dr. Tukmechy could help me after various doctors, dermatologists, "The Hair Clinic" (Danish branch, not the one on Beach Road), I think he's worth a visit for others. I hope my scalp continues improving. I'm still shedding a lot, but it's definitely less than before. If I ever have ANY issue again, I'll go back to him, for sure. I just totally liked his approach and thoroughness and the fact that he didn't think I was hysterical. I wish all dermatologists had this professionalism. Yeah, I'm a fan. Obviously I've stocked the anti-dandruff shampoo and hope to have enough supplies until my next visit to Dubai.

Pretty sure Silica tablets are available here-but I brought mine in from Australia with no problems anyway edited by wuffles on 24/09/2012 Lovely, GREAT news - thanks, Wuffles:-)

The most recent discovery I've made when it comes to losing weight seems to be replacing white bread with brown (as in rye bread/German Schwarzbrot). Just try it, I lost 3 kg the last 40 days just doing this and opting for dry fruits as snacks instead of chocolate and cakes. I normally follow WeightWatchers' system, but these 3 kg have been the most stubborn ever. Getting rid of white bread really works wonders, I'm also less bloated than before. THAT has been the best slimming pill ever. edited by norne on 24/09/2012

I too went to the doctors and had the tests about this. I do suggest every one makes this a first step in case it is a sympton of an illness. They can tell me exactly why it is happening. I have an auto immune disease called Pernicious anemia. This means my body doesn't absorb B12 naturally. So every 3 months I have a needle of B12. This is meant to make me more energetic and help with the hair loss. It makes no difference. Drats:( I also went to a hair loss specialist and that did help about 50%. They use shampoos, herbs, laser light treatment and Minoxidill that you apply to your hair. I have continued using the laser and Minoxidill at home and things are stabilised. I also started taking Silica tablets 6 months ago because I heard a specialist on the radio suggest it. But I have never been able to fully regrow and thicken my hair. I don't know why there are so many woman who come on this forum complaining of hair loss whilst living in Dubai but there are a lot. If these tablets help someone else then I will be so pleased for you as I know what it is like to have thinning hair. That is great they are available on the internet so they are easy to get. I did buy another 2 bottles today to start my stockpile. Wuffles forget the Tim Tams and Vegemite, my bag will be stuffed with this Hair tonic stuff lol. I did ask the naturopath today about the horse shampoo and he looked at me like I was crazy lol. If it works I say go for it:) A few questions: I'm visiting Dubai the next 30 days and need info regarding these hair loss specialists and laser light in particular. Which clinic did you go to? Another question: I'm a little worried about bringing Silica into the UAE for my trip. Is this supplement available in the stores in Dubai - can I find it in Life Pharmacies etc.? Would appreciate ANY answer regarding Silica, I'm so paranoid when it comes to the list of banned drugs and don't know how if it's even considered a drug. Hope you know what I mean.

Overall whatever feedback I have got through this forum and otherwise is that Dubai is a safe place for women travelling alone. I'll be in Dubai for the 5th time on my own in a few weeks. All I can say is that since I discovered how safe this city is, I don't feel like traveling to anywhere else on my own. You don't need to worry at all. I'm from Denmark and feel a LOT safer in Dubai than in any other European city. In fact, I never valued this kind of personal safety before because I simply never experienced it. Even when I walk in Deira around 1-2 am I never faced any issues - despite 'working girls' etc. and quite a 'lively' neighborhood. The first hotel I ever stayed in was Rose Rayhaan by Rotana on SZR, and one of my male friends dropped by to pick me up as we were going out. The reception called my room to hear if I was 'expecting this gentleman' and then one of their staff went with my friend to my room. Needless to say, I did feel VERY safe indeed with all these precautions. It's truly my impression that people take good care of each other there. All the hotels have cameras, too, for security reasons. To sum it up: You absolutely don't have to worry.

- Hot tip of the day...don't buy one locally with a South African plug on it!! The first one my husband brought home gave me a good kick the first time I plugged it in. It MUST have a separate earth (ie three pin plug) !!!!!!! edited by Green-ish on 28/04/2012 I'm confused about this. Does this mean I can't bring my KitchenAid with a Danish/EU plug and simply use an adaptor with it?

The notorious English Defence League had demonstrated in Luton against Muslim immigration earlier in the year. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/feb/05/edl-stage-protest-luton And would you believe it, these EDL people are coming to my small town in Denmark where I am now - this Saturday - to demonstrate. Should I be alarmed or very alarmed?

Wait a second, I went to DFC some days ago and the note on the door said there was a new location near Deira Clocktower. Or at least that's what I remember from the little map attached, but I didn't pay attention to the exact address since I'm only staying another ten days before I'm going back to Europe.

Try Gulf Oasis in TECOM, next to MiNC Apartments. I'm staying at Dubai Youth Hostel until a flat becomes available again on Thursday. They increased the price from 8,000 to 9,000 (all included) for 2012 BUT I would still go with them because of these things: Free Wi-Fi in the flat Nice and immediate service Great housekeepers who come every day The kitchen has all the things you need except a real oven. In comparison I tried Gloria and Mazoon (now Boutique 7), and they were similar prices last year but a lot more hassle and cockroaches in Mazoon/Boutique 7 as an added bonus. The first days I was there I had some issues with cooking smell from other rooms, but I guess that can happen anywhere in Dubai with the A/C. The pool is small, but there is a sun deck and a jacuzzi and a small gym, too.

Is it possible to get there by public transport + walking? I checked on Wojhati and it says there is a bus stop at Menhad Restaurant. I'm worried about walking along that road and want to hear if it's possible at all. I'm on a student budget and would like to avoid AED 120+ if I can for taxi rides, but don't want to risk my life either. edited by norne on 28/12/2011

Read today in gulfnews about fireworks at burj khalifa, but I wonder because they write Metro open until Sunday at 12.00. does it mean metro closes at 12 midnight? Doesn't make sense to me when fireworks is at 12 midnight? Well, in the article it clearly says: "On January 1, the Dubai Metro will operate every three minutes during peak hours between 12am and 5.30am, in the stations from Al Rashidiya up to Ibn Battuta. And during off-peak hours, there will be a train every four to 10 minutes, Al Tayer said." ;-)

I know traffic and getting to the metro station will be a nightmare. Without a restaurant booking I would never try to go anywhere downtown. This way, at least I can rest my feet, enjoy the view and THEN worry about reaching the metro later on. Please give me some credit for trying - I'm normally not a NYE person at all, haha.

Okay, so it's not 'glam' but really authentic: Go for an abra ride across the creek! The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has issued exclusive Nol Silver and Gold cards for public transport users in Dubai and made them available at all metro stations in celebration of the UAE 40th National Day on the second of December, in a limited edition comprising not more than 10 thousand cards. From AMEinfo Oooh, THANKS, Alismum! So they should be available from today, it seems:-)

I'm a big fan of WW, but I actually used to be a LOT bigger:-). I only have positive things to say about the system, although I'm not familiar with the latest way to calculate points etc. I still use the same PointSystem as when I lost 21 kilos in 2006. Since I got my iPhone I've been using a great little app called 'iWatchr' to track my daily points. Yes, I did put on about 10-12 kilos some years ago after letting go and due to personal issues. Without the WW system I wouldn't know how to get back on track! I haven't been to any meetings since 2006 but I actually still manage to control my weight by counting points. Simply love the way it gives me the freedom to choose, add bonus points for exercise etc. A friend of mine forced me to join him back then. I'm eternally grateful for this although we did make a lot of jokes with our lack of stamina. I've learned a lot about reading nutritional info since then - some of the point values have been true shockers now and then. I don't know enough about online subscriptions, but I imagine it must be quite motivating. Good luck whatever you choose:-)

I honestly feel that these vouchers can change my entire perspective on what I can do when I'm in Dubai. Now my only 'problem' is whether I should order them online and have them shipped to Denmark - or if I should wait until December 18 when I arrive. I also bought my first ever Cobone deal today - 75 AED for a dinner dhow cruise with a DJ and a magic show. I found this combo too tempting. I guess I'm an aspiring Coupon Queen, and I really wish I had known about this book in March for my 2nd trip:-( Update: I ordered the 'Family' and 'Fine Dining' books which will be delivered directly to my hotel instead of all the way to Denmark. So SMART, I'm really in love with The Entertainer already. edited by norne on 18/11/2011

We put a lot of people into Gloria and always good reports! Gloria is nice and the pool there is really amazing! I also loved their breakfast buffet, the lobby and location a lot. However, some of the living rooms look horrible ("Mediterranean") and the uncomfy sofa was completely useless to me. Maybe I'm just picky. My Apple Macbook power supply also broke down there because of their strange electrical circuit, so that cost me 500 AED that they didn't refund. Something was leaking in the bathroom cupboard and they gave up fixing it after three attempts. The guest bed I arranged for my friend was also really rigid and uncomfortable and I was embarrassed that she had to sleep there. Finally, during August I heard that the entire hotel A/C was out of function for 3 whole days (!). The reviews mentioning this disaster have been carefully deleted on Tripadvisor, but I know because my friend worked there during that crisis. The way they handled that issue wasn't nice at all and guests were relocated to strange staff accommodation towers across the road. The rate I was given took a lot of hassle and bureaucracy and they insisted on getting a stamp from my employer although I clearly told them I was a student! All in all my experience with Gloria could have been better, I never felt at home there unlike at Rose Rayhaan or even Mazoon despite all the construction noise and problems there, too. edited by norne on 14/11/2011

I can't believe the recent price hike for a month at Mazoon Hotel Apartments in TECOM. In July they first told me a studio would be 6500 AED. Then next day they had suddenly raised the price to 8000 for no apparent reason. Now they have changed their name to 'Boutique 7' and ... hold on... increased the price to 12000 per month. Tweeeeeeeelve thouuuuuuusand Dirham. O-M-G, when I stayed there in August I found a roach in the kitchen and they were drilling and hammering until 2-3 o'clock in the night because of construction and renovation of their rooms and restaurant downstairs. So glad I found out about Gulf Oasis Hotel Apartments instead. A studio there costs 7500, and a 1BR costs 8000 including everything. Mazoon is a complete joke!

I love my Kindle, too, but still have some issues with it. First of all, web browsing is a joke and I keep getting 'Sorry, web browsing is not an option in your country' or something like that. I remember it worked for a brief moment last time I was in Dubai, but perhaps I was just lucky or it connected to a Wi-Fi or something. Now I have problems with 'managing social networks'. Other users outside the U.S. also have these issues and can't connect or disconnect to Twitter and Facebook, for instance if you want to share a quote or tweet that you finished reading a book. My Kindle makes me read a LOT more than before, but as an Apple user I have to say that functionality totally sucks. I'm a little bothered with these little things since I had to pay a minor fortune to get it to Denmark with import duties and all. I hope they will fix some of these issues in the next version and hopefully stick to the black and white screen. Originally I bought my Kindle since I didn't enjoy reading books on my iPad because of the glossy screen. I guess I have a love/hate relationship with my Kindle, LOL. Update: I just tried logging into the Kindle app on my iPad, and I was able to 'manage social networks' from there. Problem solved! edited by norne on 14/09/2011

Therefore I also have to thank EW and everybody who ever posted something about Gloria Hotel here. I remember that my first reaction after meeting him that evening was "why don't I ever meet cute guys like him?", so LADIES, be careful what you wish for:-) omigosh that's AWEsome! I already had a photo album on Facebook entirely dedicated to the metro, so OF COURSE this is meant to be, haha. On the night I arrived in July, he offered to help me carry my 20 kg suitcase down the stairs at the seaside exit. Just imagine, if they had a lift or an escalator there, we never would have met! I actually roast my own coffee beans in Denmark - in a popcorn machine! I buy raw green coffee beans and then I roast them lightly and let them cool down the next 12-24 hours. I TOTALLY recommend home roasting for coffee freaks out there, the popcorn machine is not ideal but it's okay for me at the moment.
