EK, and many other companies, start paying education allowance from year FS2 onwards. So you'll have to pay for FS1. Good luck!

In my opinion DIA is better. Why do you think Wellington is better? I think all of the GEMS schools are quite commercial. But that is my opinion. You should visit Wellington and see how the school 'feels'. In the end, it's a personal choice.

It was a toddler boy from the neck down with his legs spread... even if somene sent the photo why on earth would you not delete that! I'm a bit shaking while reading this. You should report this to the police IMMEDIATELY! I don't think I have to tell you that this might be (linked to) child p0rn.

Hi TDB, We have an LG one. 8kg washing, 4kg drying. We were told by the LG technician (who came to do a minor repair) that these combi machines are not meant for frequent drying. If you will be drying frequently, it's better to buy a separate one. And our machine is placed in a closed space, no air vent. Never had problems. By the way, I was impressed by the LG customer service. Good luck!

On this thread, as well as another one, a woman who I've long considered to be a very decent person due to the posts she makes is being lambasted regarding a question she asked me during what I know for sure will have been a momentary lapse of judgement on her part. Granted I've never met the lady but I do know from her posting history that she is an honorable, very decent woman. Someone who I very much hope to meet one day. edited by DesertRose1958 on 11/03/2014 Agreed. I also found it odd, that I was critising Sanddy_Dogg whose advice I always admire. I just did not like Rebellodubai's line of defence. I guess I started that, but I have to say, a bad call doesn't make you a bad person. Sometimes even our friends say things we know are not ok, and it is important to call them on it, (as I was saying in the other thread, that is one of the little things we can do) this was one of those times. I have nothing against SD, her question was inappropriate/offensive in the context it was asked, that's all. Agree.

Off topic, but DR, do you know where you can get that tile cleaner from please? (Nothing sinister). Our wonderful cheapskate developers selected the cheapest tiles which aren't sealed and are therefor porous and absorb all the dirt that touches them. Wow. Just wow.

AmyAus82, the fact you didn't know that there is an exit permit policy in place in Qatar makes me think you're not aware of how Qatar functions really. I'm just so surprised about this long thread, where gays, domestic helpers and other vulnerable groups are being dragged in to underline someone's opinion on human rights. Qatar is an incredible wealthy country but they lack vision and strategy. The UAE has been great in buying in know how where they lack experience. Qatar didn't choose this path and is buying stuff. Where an airline like Qatar Airways can think that if you flash the money bills and buy people without taking into account basic human rights, you can only do 1 thing: vote with your feet. And if you know people asking about working for such an airline, like the OP, you can advise them with giving an insight of how it is to work for such a company. Or working and living in a country like Qatar. It's always up to the person to make that choice in the end.

I used to live in Qatar and know many people who (used to) work for Qatar Airways. I base my opinion on what I have seen living in that country and hearing experiences first hand from people. Qatar and Qatar Airways should be avoided if you like your personal freedom. Maybe it sounds harsh, but that's my personal opinion. <em>edited by Notnewintown on 09/03/2014</em>

Thanks all...we strongly feel that we lost our baby immediately after amniocentesis....till then the baby was absolutely fine...we didnt make an issue instead accepted it as our fate....now with this tissue analysis issue I am seriously thinking of taking it up with the management.. I hope you'll be able to find a way to have peace with this ordeal. And I wish you all the luck with this. On another note: there's a bloodtest called NIPT which an expecting mother can do which is very accurate. No need for the scan and amniocentesis (which carries a risk to miscarry). I know it's done on a rather large scale in Belgium, where the test is provided. For more information: http://www.downsyndromenipt.info I know this won't help you, dear OP. But maybe it will help others.

Blinking Nora! Not quite in the Foremarke league, but not far off!! Still a loooooooong way off Foremarke! Once the discounted period is over Foremarke will be 90k for FS1. We looked at it but for how much extra we would be paying for four children, we could buy a house in NZ during the another few years we hope to be here..... What does that 90k cover!? Approx 30-40k everywhere else right? So why so much? For 90k the school offers you free housing. The day your kid starts school, you can move in. :-)

It says on the site if one subscribes for 3 months than it would come to 80/-AED per month, if for 6 months than 75/-AED per month and if for a year than 71/-AED... so what do you mean it worked out at 35.5 .. thanks Use the code FREESUB114 valid for 6 month and 12 month only. Silvstet, where did you type in this code? It's not working for me..

Thank you so much for your reply. I guess I will sign up for 6 months and see from there. Anyway, I see that they have a 15% off offer as well. Any idea whether you can use this in conjunction with 200 AED offer? Which offer do you use to make it 40 AED per box? Can't remember the first offer but the second one was the Eid offer (12 months for the price of 6). @Notnewintown: They usually do have a full sized product- I'd say in 3 out of every 4 boxes. On the glambox website, I was looking at the contents of the Dec 2013 box. One of the items is Lolita Lempicka perfume. Was that a sample or a full sized bottle you received? Thanks!

Celesti, wishing you lots of strength and positivity to deal with this situation. Karma is a *****, and it will sooner or later bite them both in the ***. You'll get out of this a stronger person. Don't be surprised if your DH comes crawling back to you in the end. Keep a diary and write down the events, your emotions and all details. This can help you later on with getting a clear picture of what happened, something that might be hard to have now you're in this horrible rollercoaster. Plus, it might help you with giving an accurate line of events to your child in 15-20 years, if your child wants to know the story. Ladies, is it just me or does a shiver also runs down your spine when you read stories like this? It sounds like it could happen to any of us, no matter how strong your marriage seems to be or how well you know/trust your partner. Or am I the only one?

I want to know how long you live in Dubai :-) You're right, it has not been managed well. But never ever compare Dubai to other countries where these things are managed better or where censorship doesn't exist and where you can openly critize these things. You should know better. That is, if you're living in Dubai longer than 12 months. Now, let's focus on really important things in life :-) edited by Notnewintown on 01/01/2014

Notnewintown, you mentioned that cost of living is higher and quality of life is lower compared to Dubai. Can you give me some examples regarding quality of life? We live a pretty boring life over here but its one im very happy with. My day revolves around taking our dog for her walks, looking after my DD in the morning, taking her to nursery in an afternoon, then either meeting with a friend for a coffee or skyping home while I have those few hours free. Then its, pick up DD, dinner bath and bed for her then spend the evening at home with hubby. on a weekend we usually go to a mall or a park or soft play place, or occasionally the beach. We have the occasional meal out and the odd takeout. We're not ones for regular 5* dinners or regular brunchers and our days of going out drinking and clubbing came to an end quite a while ago. So for me and my lifestyle, am i likely to find a huge difference? I often find it hard to relate when people say about quality of life, because i think it very much depends on what you're used to doing with your time and think people must have far more exciting lives than mine. We didn't lead a clubbing or partying life. And even if we wanted to, there was not much choice in venues anyway. The fact that it's a peninsula and you need an exit permit to get out of Qatar, made it a bad place for us. Plus the fact that the country is run differently than Dubai (less long term strategy, more greed, no high end finishing) makes living there different. I don't want to bad mouth Qatar too much. For us it served its purpose by allowing us to make money and further our careers. Nothing more. But there is more to life than to stay in a miserable place and making loads of money. By the way 1: people always lovingly call it Dohell :-) By the way 2: the comment about the lounge in the airport is always meant as a joke, you took it seriously. What people try to say is that the best place about Doha is the spot where you LEAVE Doha :-)) As said, take your family and go to Doha during a weekend. Visit the malls, try to hail a taxi from the street, try to venture out of Doha and drive around a little. And, most importantly, listen to your gut feeling. Don't panic because there a lot of people who dislike the place, there are people who are happy there as well. Just make sure the city gives you a good vibe before you decide to move. Good luck!

Just wanted to add: my husband and I were making a lot of money in Doha. A lot. But we found out that no money in the world could make us happy in Doha. That was the lesson we learned. Don't focus too much on money and salary dear LMAO-DXB. Consider the lifestyle and environment you're getting ended up in. That's why I advice you to visit Doha and have a look yourself. Only then you can judge for yourself.

As said in previous posts, the best part about it is the departure lounge at Doha International Airport. Yep, agree. Ok, so I know this is the feeling a lot of people have about the place, but if anyone can shed any light on any of the questions we've raised in the original post so we're not digging ourselves a great big hole..... I can only answer the first and last question. 1. Used to live in a 2br apartment in beverly hills tower in west bay and it costed approx. QAR 220,000 per annum. 2. If your family has 1 bread winner and 2 school going kids, I would only be comfortable with anything above QAR 40-45k.

So the job he has an interview for......its for a company which is based in Qatar, however his role will be based in Dubai so for now, no move would be necessary. HOWEVER, there is a small chance that at some point in the future we may have to relocate to Qatar - so we may not have a choice in the matter. Having been royally screwed previously by companies here with regards to packages etc, through not having had every minute detail put in writing in the contract, we want to make sure we dont get caught out again, so need to either negotiate a package that would be more than adequate should we be required to move, OR have it written in to the contract that if we had to relocate, then we would be requiring an increase in package to XYZ to cover relocation costs and the increased living expenses. I hope you realize that contracts are worth very little in this part of the world? How much you try to waterproof it?

I used to live in Dubai before I moved to Doha. I was not happy for the duration that I lived there. The cost of living are higher, the quality of life lower. Driving is much more dangerous over there. One of the things I really disliked about Doha is the fact you need an exit visa every time you'd like to leave the country (for vacation, weekends away etc.). The fact that I needed permission from my employer to be able to leave the country gave me the feeling that my freedom was touched. My advice to you would be: visit Doha for at least 2 days. Drive around, have a look yourself. Only then you'd be able to feel whether you like it or not. I know people who are happy over there, but from experience the people who find it the hardest to live in Doha, are the ones who used to live in Dubai before. Doha is in no way comparable to Dubai. Apples and kiwi's :-)

Home cooked is best. You can start with steamed and pureed carrots, sweet potato or any other vegetable. Pureed fruit is also easy to make. To be honest, I don't call that cooking :-) If you want to buy jars, you don't have a lot of choice in Dubai. Hipp is an organic brand which you'll find in Carrefour, Spinneys etc. Good luck!

They are in such good hands and it gives me peace of mind during these years where they are so young and vulnerable. It's nothing fancy, but it is Montessori so has all of the materials etc that count and the teachers are amazing. The staff stay on for years (I am talking 15+ years!). Same here! My initial reaction to your first post was that I felt you were being unfeeling and selfish, but now that you have given a little more background I can see that you are in a very difficult situation. However, your DD is in a worse place than you and your DH, no matter how imperfect her mother is, she is her mother. And your DD is very young, and still at an age when pleasing adults is very important, the poor kiddie must, in spite of anything she tells you, be feeling very confused and torn. Please try to think ahead, she will not be a child for very much longer and she will be more willing to truly express her feelings, and work through them...........IF you back right off and remove the pressure. Please don't say you are not pressuring her, by allowing this to even be an issue and discussing it with her is opening a whole can of emotional worms for her. You seem to have provided a well adjusted and functional family environment for her, but that in itself must only be highlighting the differences in parental situations. Amongst other emotions she will feel a degree of guilt (albeit misplaced) a sense of responsibility towards her mother and a host of other feelings she cannot yet articulate. But you and your DH cut this Gordian knot....you can afford to be emotionally generous (and please try to separate the financial implications from the real issue here, it hopelessly confuses things and is probably responsible for some of the more acid responses on here) and allow the child to spend EVERY Xmas day with her mother, for now. In a very few years she will decide for herself.......probably quite forcefully! Do this, and you will remove a huge burden from her little shoulders and in the fullness of time she will reward your patience and generosity with a lifetime of absolute trust and the satisfaction of knowing that you both have put her feelings above your own. Your DD will be much more yours if you do this. Sometimes being a parent means letting go, there is a lot to be said for the judgement of Solomon. I speak from experience. So incredibly well said.

Thanks Fairydust and sorry you are in the same boat. We are losing out on about 30 000dh this year and with the current laws the tenant can stay there until he chooses to leave so that's a lot of money over 3 or 4 years. When I convert that to our home currency it's even more, like a mortgage on a small studio which could be providing for our future. We've all to take responsibility for ourselves and plan ahead right? And for the smug you say we should have researched before committing this money here, the law was different when we bought. and there you have it in a nutshell - the very reason why many people did NOT buy here = the way that things can change at a moment's notice here and often not to your advantage... Exactly. This is not new. The fact that laws are continually changing here and that a contract is not worth the piece of paper it's written on, makes us very hesistant to buy. That's not smug, but smart. If you decide to buy, that's a risk you're taking. Be really aware of that. You can win (like many did) but you can also lose. <em>edited by Notnewintown on 23/11/2013</em>

How do you know that your shipping expenses are not outweighing the savings you're making? When you order, you can usually see the weight of your package - or at least make a good guess. Here are the rates. I've often found that it's not worth it to use the SnS account, especially when you know vendors do not consolidate your items. http://www.shopandship.com/ship/countries-rates.aspx Thanks Sakhifa. That's helpful. But if you don't use the SnS account, then how do you ship your goods? By using the normal shipping process of the website you're buying from?
