A second here for the German Medical Centre. Had one experience with Dr McCullogh and that was enough - old fashioned, condescending and uptight.

If we ever had a day off work, our landline would ring constantly and if I answered, the caller would hang up - I did my block about it one day and our maid really couldn't understand the problem. aaarrgh, final straw was never being able to find the handset because it was in her room/!!! I would be even more ****** if it was an agency maid.

Same as Dubaicat - I had welts and rash all over my trunk - Drs and family at home were bricking it about liver, it wasn't - it was just a hormonal thing that cleared up (thank God!) as soon as I delivered. Good Luck

Please take Greenish's wonderful advice and go and see a GP - preferably someone with Western training who may have a bit more awareness of depression and/or anxiety. If you wrote that you had diabetes or had just broken your arm, you would be told to get straight to a doctor for remedy, if you do have depression, it is just the same - diagnosable and treatable. You will feel so much better once you open the topic with a medical professional. good luck to you and if you are ever really really down, there is usually someone on this board no matter what time of day or night, just jump on and 'speak' to someone.

We stayed at Olanda Villa in Thalpe, Galle when baby was 7 weeks old, it was amazing and really great staff - cook, maid, watchman etc only problem with 2 year old is that it has an open pool - I think I would go bonkers with paranoia.

I think I read here about someone who kept on getting tummy upsets here, even when eating home cooked food. One day, they watched their houseboy washing the dog's dishes in the same water and with the same utensils as their own dishes and cookware. All became clear and they recovered immediately.. After one last puke...:\:

Thanks Kiwispiers, it's good to know that it can be insisted on. I had to battle for it here as well, don't really know what the issue is if all is ok with APGAR and Mum. I will get my [u'>bossy *****[/u'> extremely insistent boots on.

This is all fantastic knowledge that you have shared and makes me feel a little better about delivering in a new place. Thank you - I will check the hospitals out when we arrive. Thanks for tip about contract Kiwi. The time taken to receive baby after birth is a bit disturbing to me. Here we requested that the baby be placed straight on my chest and she was, it was a small consolation for not having the 'anticipated' delivery. Many thanks again.

Pudding Rice i.e short grain or round rice. Have managed to buy it once it was an English brand called Hider Foods, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Should have learnt my lesson and bought in bulk! If anyone finds it preferably in New Dubai area, please give a shout. TIA I bought a bag recently in LUlu, AD. It was chef's choice brand.

but its not all about money, its about the experience and a different life as to the uk, i am sure if you dont have a job now it cant be good. yes the uk does provide you with lots of "free" stuff to at least survive and that doesnt happen here in ad, so yes you do have to make sure that you get the figures right. Did I miss where the OP said they were from the UK? You do know that not all expats are British don't you? Actually it is all about the money in this place, especially when you can wind up in jail for a bounced check! edited by NOUGATNESS on 27/10/2011

Sorry to hear you have had a tough year. It is no use having 'me' time if you are going to be missing and or anxious about your baby. If you have a Nanny, can the nanny travel with you, stay at hotel with baby and give you time out but still be close to your baby? Personally, I am with my husband, but make sure that we are not travelling out of the country at the same time for work ever, and would never leave our children here while we were both out of the country - I just think what if something happened like Bahrain uprising etc and we couldn't get back in? I know people who left their kids here with their maid while they popped over to Lebanon and got stuck there for ages. Anyway, I hope you make a decision that suits you - listen to your self, not your friends. edited by NOUGATNESS on 01/08/2011

it has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth as this was my dream job when I came here and have been doing it for the past 7 years .This is certainly not the way I was expecting it to finish.. And to answer the poster who asked, yes, men do get subjected to the same treatment, and sometimes for less weigt than ladies. Let's say it's just a very very image councious company :) even though they have far bigger issues that alter their image other than the staff's weight :) I am sorry that it has ended like this, by the sounds of it you will be better off out of there. Is it a local company, because if not, if it has international branches etc, you should register harassment complaint with them - unless it is part of your contract. God, I put on and lose four kilos in a day! Just ridiculous.

haha - like when my sister was pushing my 11 pound baby in her pram, a shop assistant took one look and handed her a bar of vagina tightening soap......I thought it was excellent proactive customer service.... Was this an airline that was on about the weight? That is a terribel story and another example of the bigotry that would end in penalties on other countries that is allowed here, Just disgusting.

Just reply, 'it is easier to get lipo than a lobotomy.' 'I can do something about being fat, what can you do about being ugly?' 'there must be something in the air in the office, cos you're looking a bit tubby too'. I hadn't told many people at work I was pregnant, one secretary said to me 'you are getting sooooo faaaatt', I replied, 'I am 5 months pregnant what's your excuse?'. There is just no social filters in some people....

When I changed jobs my bank froze my savings account and put that I was overdrawn, even though there was 50,000k in it - i had a credit card with a limit of 80,000, and even though its balance was 0, the bank said I was overdrawn by 30,000. They didn't freeze the credit card though...... They unfroze it when i took in a new contract - I don't know what will happen if you aren't working.

Disastrous D has some good tips, but just adding that we stayed at the checkpoint charlie apartment last November - http://www.apartment-berlin.com/en/apartments.html They were really really helpful, friendly and efficient. We only had a 4 month old baby with us, but it was great for what we needed.

Tax by stealth - overpriced rentals, no free schooling, no free medical care, no part time job for my kids (until recently), no legal way to have a home office, false traffic fines, expensive internet, water and electricity. Would rather pay tax and know what I am paying and that everyone is benefiting from the taxes from low to high income.

Chocoa, I know each company is different but at my interview the (female!) boss made it very clear that pregnancy and children would not be considered favourably if I was to keep my job.....a couple of years later and same company sends massive flowers, jewellery and chocolates after delivery and is very supportive of me being a working Mum. And same interviewer calls herself Aunty!!! Best of luck and you never know, you mightnt even get crook this timearound.

same reason why Mylene Klass is the face and spokesperson for a Dubai tourism campaign, and in the same article where she is waxing lyrical about the charms of dubai and living on the Palm or wherever, it mentions her children to her 'fiancee'. Anyone I know who has had children out of wedlock here isn't living in luxury.....

the thread was about a mother having doubt that her son and the maid are having something, kind of romance and she wanted to be sure before talking to her husband so she was looking for a nanny cam to put it at home. I really want to know what happened. The OP put a camera outside the son's room over a weekend and noticed son and maid go into his room a few times, once holding hands. Maid got booted and sent packing, son threw a massive teenage strop, maid then contacted to say she pregnant. Don't know what happened after that. Troll went back under her bridge

You might get lucky and find a company whose policies aren't circa 1950 for the rest of the world. I for one, have had to pump milk locked in a stationery cupboard, whilst my office calls me on my mobile. Really condusive to milk production not.....but I am lucky, I am only one of two women in a very large company with sole access to a lockable cupboard, others would have to pump manually or with batteries in the toilet...no thanks. That added to the monstrous 45 calendar days of maternity leave and 3 days paternity leave really sums up the pregnancy and return to work support in this place. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/bleak-career-prospects-for-uae-moms

Does anyone have a menu / price idea etc for the new restaurant. I've had a google but can't find much out. Thinking it might be nice for my Mum's birthday? Anyone done the afternoon tea there? This is from The National, - [i'>Dinner at Burj Khalifa will be steep at At.mosphere Armina Ligaya Last Updated: Jan 23, 2011 For diners at the world's highest restaurant, due to open today in the Burj Khalifa, the bill will be as stratospheric as the setting. Patrons will be expected to spend a minimum of Dh450 (US$122.52) a head for dinner at At.mosphere Grill & Lounge on the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa, according to the reservations hotline. Lunch featuring an "eclectic European cuisine" will cost at least Dh300, while those who want to sit in the lounge for drinks or snacks will need to spend a minimum of Dh200 per person. At.mosphere is "a one of a kind restaurant located in the world's tallest building" and the prices "reflect the superior lifestyle experience awaiting guests", said a spokesman for Emaar Hospitality Group, which runs the restaurant. Emaar expects the location, which its has billed as the highest restaurant in the world and which overlooks Dubai and the waters of the Gulf, to be its prime attraction. "Given the location of At.mosphere, at a height of 442 metres in the world's tallest building, we expect a steady flow of visitors," the spokesman said. "The restaurant is already almost fully booked for the first week after opening." As of yesterday afternoon, the dinner service At.mosphere was fully booked for January 23 and 24, apart from cancellations. The restaurant is due to open for lunch guests from next Tuesday, its reservations clerk said. Emaar plans to apply to Guinness World Records to recognise it as the world's highest restaurant, the spokesman added. The restaurant and lounge occupy about 1,030 square metres and can host more than 210 diners. At.mosphere is two floors below Burj Khalifa's observation deck, called At The Top.[/i'>

I have seen pad/sheet things that go between seat and babyseat - they are for sale in Babyshop, they also protect the seats from food etc. Maybe for foot marks buy a car seat cover and put on for duration of the stay or put a blanket over the seat, or chop kid's feet off.

Hopefully someone knows an inside way to do this... I waited too late to book two Burj Khalifa tix and now the online system is sold out for the times we are available, which is this Fri (11/2) from 13:00-19:00 and Sat (12/2) from 10:00-17:00. We are coming over from Qatar and I really missed the boat on booking this, which is something my husband really wanted to see. I tried the concierge at my hotel but they say they use the same online booking system. Anyone have an inside track on how to score tickets? If you want to put up your phone number quickly - I booked tickets for my parents for 5pm on Friday, if by some miniscule whatever chance that they don't use them, I will give you a call and you can have them. Please don't get excited though - it really is only if for some reason they don't use them. They are going home next week otherwise I would book them for another time and you could have these ones.

The best cut jeans for backside definition has to be True Religion jeans. I haven't seen them in stores here, but the quality of denim and the cut are fabulous. I'm with you there, I love True Religion and wear men's, best jeans ever. They are in Galleries Lafayette men's section.

To clear things up I worked as a therapist just to clear up I was interning as my mother has her own business so i sat in for over 2 years learning and you would be surprised how many women talk about this subject. I would think twice about telling her instead how about you focus on getting some PROOF? pay close attention when u r over their house? In the 2 years, did your Mum ever mention anything about client confidentiality? LOL

I have had the nasty experience of trying to track family members after the 2004 tsunami and wouldn't put the stress on top of the stress for any of my family or friends. Sorry to hear you had to do that. I was just thinking that as well. Even if, heaven forbid, someone had to locate you for some family emergency when no one else knew how to reach you. Thanks. Exactly. It just opens up a few more channels and saves time, especially when loved one are already bricking it.

Sh*t happens everywhere SS, not just in the dodgy joints. Hardly, not in the UK, wales, Scotland, Most of Scandinavia etc etc!!! It doesn't have to be political unrest - natural disasters, train crashes etc aren't country specific. Bombs in Stockholm a month ago. edited by NOUGATNESS on 31/01/2011

Sitting on my hands and biting my tongue on the" perks" of Australia discussion.lol Let one and all come to Australia and participate on our wonderful life ,just don't use us for getting the passport then coming back when you are old and wanting government to support you. Or even better, like one of my colleagues - get return business class tickets there every year for you, your wife and multiple offspring, but just take it in cash and fly to your real home country for about 5% of the reimbursement, because you have never set foot in Australia since you got the passport. Puke making.
