Very sorry to hear that Mumzy, but don't panic: 1. Get a second opinion before starting in any meds. My DH was diagnosed with diabetes here, but the second opinion in our home country showed nothing wrong. 2. Buy one of those blood sugar tester at the pharmacy (we have an Accu-Check) and measure his blood sugar several times during the day, before and after meals and before going to bed as well after getting up. Keep a log of what's he ate at what time, and in combination with the test results you'll get an accurate diagnosis. The pharmacist should be able to tell you exactly when to measure. Good luck.

You should also be aware that discussing your thoughts about British Protocol and our Queen when not a British national is really not on and most Brits will take great umbrage. Of all the most ridiculous comments ever. I'll discuss your queen and their queen and any other person if I so choose. Just as it's perfectly acceptable to discuss our presidents and first ladies. Take great umbrage if you want to but I don't really care one iota. Really? Again it comes down to respect, and as such i will hold my tongue in response. Yes, really. And definitely not sure how all of this relates to Indians and their maids! I agree... the thread went off on a tangent because someone mentioned that India (with its caste system) wasn't that different to the UK with its respect for the royals and obsession with class differences. I pointed out that that was a very outdated view of Britain and, by way of example, mentioned that many ppl would not curtsey to the queen as our society no longer expects us too. Then another poster got vert upset and launched into a 1950s-style tirade on how wonderful the royals were. All v amusing! The points made were about protocols and respect, shall i Google translate my posts into US English to see if that helps with the comprehension. lol Maybe you should keep to your promise and hold your tongue. How condescending can you get. Or am I not allowed to comment, not being a British national ....

If discussing protocols and/or Royals is disrespectful, we would all still be living in the Middle Ages. And why on earth would a non- British national not be allowed to discuss your queen. Your Royals are constantly plastered on the front pages of papers and tabloids all over the world. And we should all refrain from having an opinion?

Our live-out maid gets paid 2750aed per month (+Noor Takaful health insurance, 2 days off each week, annual ticket + 1 month holiday) and is perfectly happy with it. On her birthday, Eid and Christmas I give her some extra, usually adding up to 1 month extra salary each year. She's been with us almost 3 years now, on our sponsorship and I'm not worried about her working anywhere else. She knows the risks involved and is not prepared to risk her job with us.

Thanks Guiness and Mrssak. I think I'll give Pace e Luce a go. It looks as if all they're hairdressers are Lebanese, whereas the other salon boasts International hairstylists. And apparently they also have a salon in Jumeirah 1, just around the corner. Open to other suggestions...

Why people continue to hire maids and expect them to be nannies is beyond me. This is the third thread today. I don't know what OP's maid did to the baby, and I'm sorry for her, but lf you pay leanuts you get monkey's. Granted, there are some very responsible maids that I wouldn't hesitate to leave my baby with, but in general, really, if you pay 1500 or 2000 dhs a month, don't expect a qualified nanny.

A full time is when the nanny lives in, that s why it s called part time. Then just to clarify, I dont need a maid, I need a nanny :) 5 days, 9 to 5 is a full time job in my book. It will be for a midwife or nanny. So if you're really not looking for a maid, try http://www.britishnannyagency.com/

Their families seem to get on perfectly without them. It's how it goes, unimaginable for us. And with most of them on FB, Skype etc, it's not as if they never see each other, Our maid has dinner with her kids (over Skype) almost every day. On top of that, the maids are seen as cash cows by their families, who seem to think that since they work in Dubai they must be rich. Sad, sad, sad, but the maids who really want to save for a better life and their children's education tend to prefer the ticket money and extra month's salary as opposed to go home and go broke.

The biggest mistake you can make is a bit strong and none of us can possibly say that about people we don't know !! I don't know the OP but can give my experience as that's all I know... We were in a similar position..husband sent to Dubai supposedly just for a few months but as they dragged on it turned out to be the longest year of our lives..staying in the UK with 2 kids aged 13 and 5 wasn't easy for any of us and they both missed their dad terribly..whatever decision we were going to make HAD to be one to get us all back together again... about 5 months after he'd left it looked like he'd be staying much longer so we had to decide whether or not to join him...we visited Dubai and all fell in love with it ..decision made !! Eldest got into JESS and it has been the making of him.. his state secondary school at home was the pits and we all hated it..at JESS he did the IB and did very well, and now he's back home ready to start uni in September..more than we'd have dared hope for 5 years ago !! Youngest has settled in a lovely school and we've had no concerns about him at all..Everyone who knows us says the move has been the making of us..we kept our house and stay there every summer..I can honestly say we've never regretted it..am a bit surprised that so many replies on this thread have been so adamantly against coming here...certainly watching the UK from afar I don't have any regrets about leaving it !! lol But if we have to leave tomorrow then of course we will, and resume our UK life as if we never left...will miss our Dubai life enormously though i'm sure... oh and to say you can't trust married men alone here is absolute nonsense - in my opinion the type of men who cheat will do it anywhere, Dubai is no different...plenty of decent men stay here on their own without wandering... women who say different do so because they never had a decent man !! lol Excellent post DT, both the bit about families and schooling as well as the so called straying husbands.

Disagree. I use my tumble dryer a lot. Towels and bed sheets mainly, as I like them to be nice and soft. Curtains are cheap and easy to come by here, so I wouldn't worry about that. They're used to the large windows.

Hi, Im 36 and hired a 50 yr old maid for our housekeeping and food prep at home. Most definately the benefit of her being older is that I dont need to deal with any maturity issues. Her energy is quite good for her age, but Im not at home to monitor her, and we have an apartment, not a large villa. The only age related issues that I would highlight is that her hearing is not so good at times which I did not notice in the interview. But, bearing her age in mind, Ive provided her with insurance to cover any ailments that she may have. However, Im pregnant with my first and will have to find a replacement once LO comes along as she is not a nanny, and has no children of her own. This post is really sad. You make it sound as if 50 is one foot in the grave. As for health insurance, you might want to check your statistics. More often than not "older" employees have less sick days than younger ones. As someone mentioned, age s just a number.

Dutch news site Telegraaf. If you can read Dutch: http://www.telegraaf.nl/buitenland/22892813/__Verdwenen_vliegtuig_neergestort_in_Mali__.html edited by Marroosh on 24/07/2014 Please be careful posting so called "up to date links". What is the point, other than a thirst for sensation. What is the point of posting Dutch articles anyway? The article you refer to has already been withdrawn. I posted it because I was asked about the source. You were asked about the source because you posted the location of the crash. Obviously a bit premature. I do feel that a bit more restraint would be in place. It is bad enough as it is, without posters spreading unconfirmed rumours.

Proud of my country. Hopefully the ceremony will have given some comfort to the families and loved ones after the initial staggering treatment of the victims in Ukraine. Tonight 2 more planes carrying another 70 victims will be brought to The Netherlands. I pray they will all be traveling to their families soon, wherever that may be.

As for nationalities: it doesn't matter in which Emirate you reside or live, you can hire from Sri Lanka, Nepal, The Philippines, Ethiopia, Kenya and some others I think. As for the costs, if you sponsor via an agency, you will typically pay around 6000 in fees. If you sponsor the maid yourself, the rules have indeed changed. You pay the equivalent of 12x the salary as indicated on the contract. However, the UAE is not bound by the minimum salary as required by the embassy's. So your contract can e.g. indicate a salary of 700, while you can agree with your maid to pay her 1500. Only when she goes back to her home-country and returns, you may have to be "creative" with the contract, for her Embassy's sake.

To be honest, I live in Jumeirah 1 and I hate the sight of all those bins in front if the houses. It's just plain ugly and I do wish people would keep them on their premises. Besides, it is far to easy to use the bins as a step up to climb across the walls. Sorry for your bin though.

I would think it depends on your nationality. In my country you usually indicate this when you get married. If you haven't but want to do it later, you just start using your husband's name and at time of passport renewal you add his name. However, on all formal documents it will always be only your name.

That's one of the funny things here. People will push you to cheaper to get you to buy. They don't understand that cheap isn't always what you want. Don't let the salesmen influence your opinion MrsDB. Chose what you want and like. You obviously know which functionality you need in the living room, they don't. Personally I only have blackout in the bedrooms. For my living room I went for the netted version, as I love the sun have walks around my house so no one can look in at night anyway.

Sorry to spoil all this positivity (I didn't thumb you down Izzy), but Petrofac has hundreds of employees in Sharjah. One would think they could find 20 "warm and friendly" volunteers amongst themselves. Donating food or money is one thing, setting an example of personal participation is something else.

I once had a Guinot hydraderma facial at the Akaru Spa. Was quite pleased with the result. I would be careful with expecting to much with respect to the whitening (it s hard to get an "even" result in just one session, especially since your parents seem to have years of sun on their faces), but my skin looked amazingly toned and firm, especially around my eyes.

Strange post. What are you trying to achieve? Who would have taken copies? If you're the sponsor, no one else needs a copy. If you hire her via an agency, they will have her passport. If you are not the sponsor an are not hiring her via an agency, you are having her work for you illegally, so you could never go to the police.

[ I don't think this forum is the right place for these kind of questions, as none of us here are qualified to give certain information on the issue. Best is to contact Dubai Courts or the Fatwa line and get accurate information. None of us are qualified for lots of questions that are asked and answered here. Why is this question any different? And since some posters advice OP to check with Dubai courts her question has been answered hasn't it? She now knows where to go, something she probably didn't know or had thought of before she posted.

Under the new domestic contract the employer has the obligation to provide health insurance for their maid, so you don't have a choice, unless you decide not to renew her contract.
