TDB, almost 3000: You must join the Frivolous Thread. About FB: I use it to keep up with friends abroad and to keep them updated about me (instead of sending numerous emails back and forth). I have a very limited number of FB friends, only those I'm really interested in, and I only accept requests from people I want to keep updated about my life. And yes, I'm honest, but if I have nothing to say I don't, so people who don't know me might think I'm only bragging about how great my life is. But then again, their not on my FB, so who cares.

OP, I agree with Izzie and oopsiedaisy. You admit in your post that your daughter is outspoken and bold. That can be tricky to deal with in a classroom situation, and I am sure the teacher (in charge of 24 other pupils I assume) is doing the best he/she can. Maybe try and address some issues with your daughter first, she needs to understand that there are some rules in a classroom setting, she needs to behave and respect the teacher, after all, no? Shifting all blame onto the teacher is not realistic and unfair, but if things don't improve, try and set up a meeting with her teacher so that you can work together - at school and at home - on your daughter's "boldness". Your daughter hasn't had trouble with previous teachers. Therefore, the teacher is the problem. That's nonsense. Kids change. An outspoken child of 6 or 7 can easily become over confident and change into an obnoxious brat when getting older. Not saying this is the case with OP's DD, but instead of accusing the teacher, I think she should also have a chat with DD about do's and don'ts in class.

I'm with Izzy on this one. Why is it always the teachers fault. It's good for a child to speak up, but being outspoken and bold in class (depending on how much and how often) can be very disruptive, and intimidating to the more quite kids. So maybe also talk to your DD and tell her to tone it down a bit?

It is LEGAL to sponsor a live-out maid. As a sponsor I do know where she lives. I also hold her passport (because she's asked me to, in her opinion it's safer with me than in her shared apartment). OP, go to immigration, either with her passport or a copy, and report her absconding.

Unless you hire her via an agency, she has to be on your or your husband' visa. She cannot work for you if she's on her husband's visa (doubt if she even can be). What if her husband and his employer provide a no objection letter? Can she then work as a maid? She can but it would still be illegal. You will be fined if she gets caught, she will be deported.

Today, because that's when all celebrations are taking place. She might want to meet up with her friends and watch the Parade? In the end it's your decision, but if she really wants the day of and you don't really need her, why not let her go out?

You mention it to be an Indian Embassy fee. In that case I suppose the Embassy knows best. Since it is refundable, her previous employer will want to have it refunded upon cancellation. And you will have to put the fee/deposit down. There is no such thing as transferring a visa. The previous employer cancels and you have to start the whole process over. It's not until she's officially under your sponsorship that the previous employer gets her Immigration fee back. But she doesn't have to leave the country for this process, which basically saves you and the previous employer a one way ticket.

EmmaRitz, sorry, but your response is totally uncalled for. Nowhere did I suggest expats built this country (although technically they did, now that you mention it. 15% Emiratis here right?). However they did so because of the vision of the countries leaders. Nor did I demonstrate any disrespect of the laws in this country. I love living here, are proud to be part of this beautiful nation. My response to the OP is a practical one. I find it useless to scare away possible tourists with talk about it being illegal for an unmarried couple to book into an hotel, because really, if this country would enforce their law, that would have a devastating blow on tourism. And wether or not you like it, tourism is a major contributor to Dubai's wealth. Allowing it means coping with the issues that it brings.

sorry, but do people seriously not know what to do in the holidays ? We love just chilling out at home - I've been catching up on chores while my 9 year old has been happily playing and enjoying the fat that we can use the garden now it's cooler....yes it's nice to go out and do stuff but we can always find plenty to do at home... Exactly what we did today :) The children played in the garden and climbed trees ( yes, really :) and I had a cups of tea in peace without feeling the rush of homework, activities or bedtime. It was a lovely day :) Was thinking the same. Why do kids always have to be entertained. They have to learn to be able to keep themselves occupied. Just stay home and relax.

DSR, I admire you for your seemingly unlimited creativity when it comes to usernames. However when it comes to stating the laws of this countries you are relentless and lacking any form of flexibility or creativity. To the OP, DSR is right as always, it is illegal. However I would do it if I were you. This country would be nowhere if they refused all I married couples. Just don't go hugging and holding hands in public and you'll be oke.

With the link provided in the expo thread I was able to watch the bidding etc. Haven't had tv since we moved here, not really missing it, but watching got me thinking. Is there a way to watch Dubai channels online and free without getting OSN or Etisalat subscriptions and without putting a big receiver on the roof?

Sounds realistic to me WhiteOrchid. It's comparable to what I pay to our live-out, and she seems content. To be honest I sometimes wonder how she manages to get by and send money home, so I often give her extra food (or leftover meals). And extra's fir birthdays, Eid and Christmas. I would however offer a lump sum of 3000, and leave the breakdown to the maid. You don't want to get involved in discussions about fair rents etc.

I would think 2/12th of the total costs. Normally the company would write off the costs after 1 year. 1/12th every month, you've worked there 10 months so IMO that would leave 2/12th to be returned to the company.

I believe it is totally fair that the mother wants to spend Christmas Day with her daughter. You and dh have her most if the year. Unfortunately this is the way it plays out when a couple divorces and one of them chooses to move overseas. I fail to see what the fact that she's agreed for her daughter to move overseas with you has to do with it and I also fail to see what child support and airline tickets have to do with it (surely this was agreed upon during the divorce). She lives with you, so of course you're the one who makes her do her homework. Your response to other posters clearly indicate that you've already decided it's not fair, so why ask?

I guess you can't have it all.

Mommies the passengers they do feel uncomfortable with babies when they r crying too much, and the cabin crew as well... hehhehhe sorry but is the truth!! Specially when u cannot control them. Sometimes we understand that is difficult! :( Sorry but that's just tough luck. You can't expect people with small children to simply not travel. Babies are a part of life and frankly I've experienced more discomfort at the hands of people snoring, talking loudly the entire flight, being rude to the cabin crew or a myriad of other things than from crying babies. Nobody expects them not to travel. And I do understand how it can be impossible to control a baby's crying, but little kids running up and down the isles, jumping in seats and screaming and yelling are very annoying and irritating. I do expect parents to control them, but more often than not the parents seem to be happy to have them running around instead of having to keep them happy in their seats. I also notice this seems to happen on Emirates flights more than on any other airline. Could it be because of the relitavely large number of expat kids on those flights?

This article contributes to all the self fulfilling prophesy articles one reads in the newspapers lately. They will drive up the rents even further. And why in earth would you buy here if you're either here for a couple if years, or get kicked out when you're sick or retired. Fact is, Dubai is expensive to live, not tax-free if you look at all the fees, and you have to really choose to live here. Weigh up the pro's and con's and decide for yourself wether it's worth staying or wiser to leave. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do to influence the housing market.

I would just love to see all you excellent and safe drivers on SZR. Most problems there are caused by inexperienced and insecure drivers. Lots of them are only used to the empty roads in Australia or US. Agree with BubblingCreek. If you refuse to adapt, stick to the ranches or beach road. Clearly you've never driven in AUS or the US! It's actually usually the drivers sat pootling along in the 4th lane, refusing to move over when they're doing less than the speed limit and forcing people to overtake/undertake them that cause many of the issues. The problems come when there are so many different standards of driving - Jordan/Lebanon/India/SriLanka (to name a few) - all far far worse than here. I've lived in the US as well as in Jordan, so I know what I'm talking about. Many Americans are lousy drivers! And I know plenty Aussie's and Americans here who are afraid to drive, so as mentioned before, if you can't handle the driving circumstances, stay in the quiet areas.

The problem with articles like that is that they always assume that the reason people don't save is that they're spending all their money on a flashy lifestyle. While it's true that there are lots of people here who do that - and are encouraged to do so by the way Dubai is deliberately marketed - there are a great many people who don't save because all their money is eaten up with basic living expenses like rent and school fees. The majority of middle-income Western expats we know here don't save. They all work for companies that do not pay rent or school fees, and so once they've paid all their essential monthly outgoings, there is little more left over than what they had back in their home countries. They are certainly not living extravagant "upgrade" lifestyles. But apparently, the media here is not allowed to acknowledge that just basic living costs here are now so high that even many Western expats can't save. I believe what you say is true - I know several people In that very position. What I don't understand is why they stay living in a foreign country when there is little or no advantage when they could live a similar lifestyle in their home country surrounded by friends and family. If it wasn't significantly better for us financially, I would be packed up and gone from here immediately - I would love to be living with my family. edited by mrsb. on 23/11/2013 Agree with both of you. I think that, in the end, people who live on the edge, are probably still better of then living in their home countries. I see many people here who wouldn't be able to get a decent job in their home country. So I guess we all have to start acknowledging that Dubai is like any other place in the world. Work hard and excel, and you'll be all right and you'll be able to safe. Be average and struggle.
