Honestly...Ladies!!! None of us really should really think anyone here is supporting human trafficking! Just a reason to bicker? edited by americanfamily3 on 28/03/2012 I don't think anyone is consciously supporting human trafficking. However do we genuinely think that all these so-called legit agency girls would have been here if they had known they would have to work 6/days 10/hrs for 750 AED? And that is if they are lucky. Did anyone have a look at those you tube videos another poster mentioned earlier this week? I'm not trying to start another debate, but really....

Silly question, but does a spayed male still, you know, "want to" (or is he even able to?) if a female is in heat? If she just wants "it"- am wondering if you have friends with a male cat (neutered of course) who can "do the business" to shut her up, without knocking her up? LOL.... pimping for cats.... :):):)

I believe that if you want to be fully compliant, her sponsor needs to cancel his sponsorship and you should start the process. You have 30 days to complete. If longer, you will have to pay 50 AED /day for her overstay. But since you are planning to sponsor her, I wouldn't be too worried to have her come in on his sponsorship for only one week. If things do go wrong (meaning you would get caught) I don't think a NOC will do you, her and her official sponsor any good.

For future reference, I got a reply from the lawyer this morning saying it's illegal to record a conversation in the UAE without informing the other party/ies that the conversation's being recorded. I'd urge caution with that advice...my experience of UAE lawyers is that for every one that says X another will happily interpret the law as Y. Also that police and courts are often more interested in the result and justice being done than how evidence was gathered, there seems to be a lot of discretion exercised there. Not just in UAE. Everywhere, that's how lawyers make there money. (and I should know, since I am one, not a practicing one I might add, before being slaughtered ;) )

Sorry to hear that. I guess many companies have learnt their lesson during the last crisis and are thinking twice before hiring expensive expats. It's of no use to you but I wish you luck, whatever the future holds in store.

I paid money to a sponsor so he would release a lady and let her come and work for me legally. He said it was to recoup some of his costs incrued by bring the maid here a few years ago. I did this after she made it clear that if she was sent back to the Phillipines her (ex) husband would see her and beat her. She was afraid for her life so I made arrangements to ensure she could come and work for me without having to go back to the Phillipines. Call that what you like. edited by DesertRose1958 on 27/03/2012 Well done DesertRose!

3.) I feel very fortunate for the "help" of some posters here as their employees are treated with much higher employment standards than most. Lucky for you ladies to have longstanding positive relationships. Hopefully, ladies you invest for these lucky helpers. Perhaps an IRA, stocks, gold bonds, maybe even future University payments and extra time off to attend classes...then they can move on into much higher paying positions through your charitable, generous initiative. edited by DlnAces21 on 27/03/2012 Apart from the irony in this statement, what is the harm in helping others, or at least their children, move forward in live. Isn't that what we aspire for ourselves? So if I am in a position to help others do the same, I will. Not saying everyone else should, but no matter how we look at it, all of us are much better of then our helpers.

m_king, by running on the road you are endangering yourself as well as others. Pedestrians and joggers do not belong on the road, they belong on the pavement, no matter what valid reasons they might think they gave. That's a genuine answer to your genuine question. As for you accusing other posters of rudeness and advising them to get a life, your second and third post make me think you should look at yourself before judging others. Last: Judging by your number of posts, you are not a newbie to this forum. I therefor cannot believe your reaction. You should by now know that this is a blunt group of women, most of whom have a lot of time on their hands (like myself) otherwise they wouldn't be on this forum. If you don't like it, stay away.

Yes some companies allow you to take vacation in your first year, but they certainly won't allow it as paid leave. Sorry, have to disagree on that. All companies DH and I have ever worked for, in any country, including UAE, have always allowed us to take our paid annual leave during the first year. OopsieDaisy, you would pay her 2 or 3 months advance salary after 6 months? DlnAces21, sorry, but yes I would and have. I sometimes get a bit frustrated by all the negative threads on maids experiences. I'm sure they are all true (and I enjoy reading them) but I believe that in the end more experiences end up being positive. We just don't tend to write about it. I have nothing but positive experiences. I trusted the ladies that worked for me, treated them with respect, helped them if needed and have never been disappointed. I allow them things I would like my employer to allow me. If one day I will be cheated, then so be it. At least I know that I have done my best to treat them fair, and help them move forward in their lives. We are lucky to be living the live we live, why not make others a bit better.

Companies I know always allow you to take your leave during the first year, as long as it is done by mutual agreement. Apparently you did allow her to take her leave now, I can only assume she has a good reason to be wanting to go now. So given the fact you allowed her to go, I find it het bit harsh that you now say she's not "entitled" yet. As for the salary, normally these girls want to take the extra cash home, in order to save them transferring costs later on. Personally I have always paid one, even 2 or 3 months in advance. Since you suspect she might not be coming back (maids forum), you don't seem to fully trust her. I can only assume something else is going on, so you might want to reconsider if you want her back at all.

They actually did answer the emergency number when I called a few months ago for my maid, whose father passed Thurs afternoon. Tthe answer was no way to finish anything until sunday when they reopen. However, we sent her home the next day, and I completed half the paperwork on my own here and shipped it to her, then she finished it in manila. That's my point, where there's a will, there's a way! Reviving this thread! After reading all threads about OSN, etisalat etc. I gather it is best to stick to Etisalat for Landline and Internet (no choice really). We now also want TV connection in our house. If I look at the OSN Family package, it doesn't have any movies at all. Is that correct. Paying 200 AED extra for movies seems a bit stiff though. And what about Dubi and Abu Dhabi sports? How can I receive those? Any advice will be highly appreciated. I have been postponing decision for over a month now. Time to act! Thanks.

Spot on. I doubt when maids are signing a contract they are thinking about the cost of the need to go home and bury a child should one die. And just to make it clear - I do understand the ins and outs of being an employer. edited by DesertRose1958 on 24/03/2012 Desert Rose, I was directing my comment about the responsibility of sponsorship to OP. How long was it without mummy? Maybe she's gone to feed herself, or maybe she is "moving" her kittens. Happened to me once, thought mummy left, without kittens, but she was just finding a safer place for them. Maybe better to wait at a distance for a while? If you touch her and mummy comes back, she might abandon the kitten.

LL paid for the repainting of the whole house, removed all carpets and polished the tiles, all maintenance work, fixing the pool, changing the locks and will even put in a new bathroom with shower. We also wanted a new kitchen. We paid for the cabinets (Ikea delivers and installs for free) but LL changed all plumbing and electricity. We did not negotiate on the price. We talked to the neighbors who have lived here for years. Turned out we would be paying the same rent as they were, whilst rent had not gone up but down in the last few years. I also compared with the other Villa's I saw, and the rent seemed very reasonable. Have fun today. I really enjoyed the house hunt.

Technically speaking, you are right. But what kind of world are we living in if we stop helping or caring for other people. Sometimes it can be appropriate, neccessary even, to help the ones that were dealt the weakest hand out, even if you're not contractually obliged to do so. Just my opinion though.

Hi Myriam, good to hear. I was really happy with Aida. After showing me 3or 4 houses she knew exactly what I was looking for. She was pro-active, trustworthy, always kept her appointment and spent I guess about 4 full days with me. Really worth every penny. She wouldn't rest until she found me a villa. Most were in pretty good condition, but bear in mind that Jumeirah is an older neighborhood, so are most villa's. The one I decided on needed quiet a lot of work, but she arranged with the LL to have it all done. Just moved in 3weeks ago and really happy with it. Good luck to you.

DR1958, you are sooo right. Being an employer is so much more then salary and sponsorship fees. If you don't like it, or cannot afford it, do not do it. I have been in this country only 2 months. I do believe that there are maids that will do anything to get what they want, maybe even pretending a death in the family in order to get a ticket home. I do however also believe that, especially here, one should always stick to ones own values while dealing with others. As was said before, it is much worse to later find out that the story was true and not haven given the opportunity to go home, then to find out you were fooled. OP, if it was your child you would have been on the first plane home, you would have found 4500 AED and you would have found a flight. "Do to others as you would do to yourself". And by the way, many companies in their policies offer "compassionate leave" in a case like this. Time and tickets!

In some countries it is considered bad luck to give pepper&salt shaker sets for a wedding. I find it hard to think of anything authentic here. Maybe buy a really pretty mother of pearl box and fill it with dates (or maybe the fancy date shops have them). The box can be used for anything later on.

Thanks for the input so far, although not very promising! So if I understand correctly I have 2 options: 1. I receive an invoice to a p.o. box (so I better check if they have the correct no.). Do I then go to one of their offices to pay, or can I pay on-line? 2. I register on-line ( can I then pay on line as well?). Should that be done at the initial application, or can I still do it now? Sorry for all the questions, but I would like to avoid being cut of!!

Why do you need starters for a BBQ? Just make 2 or 3 nice salads. My easy to make favorite is Caprese. Slice up some tomatoes and mozzarella, arrange nicely on a plate, sprinkle pepper/salt olive oil and balsamic vinegar on it. You can make it for 2 days on separate plates. Before you serve add fresh basil. Easy, yummy and most people love it. Your deserts sound great. If you know how to do them well, stick to them to make your life easy.

It's only the Grudian that "think" the emails are genuine - they are very careful to pepper their articles with words like think, suggest and suppose... Intriguing.... That is what I dislike about the media in general. They are way too powerful. Just drop a story, people will think that where there is smoke there is fire, and thus you have created news. Most journalists will write anything they pick up on the internet, pose themselves as "experts on the subject" and there you go. Again, talking in general here, not about this particular thread.

Don't you think that if the family could have fled they would have by now? They are smart enough to realize that there is no way they will come up on top of this mess. They may be pure puppets of a regime. Tools, nothing more. Her comments may be even cynical. I am not defending the Assad family, but there is more to this whole situation then we are being led to believe.
