And as if the poor girl hasn't suffered enough already, her mum forces her to speak on video to put it on you tube?! I really don't get that.

Not on my high horse just tired of inconsiderate dog owners. You are in the wrong and so are they. With you on this one. There are numerous threads on here (rightfully) bashing dog owners who don't pick up after themselves. Most posters are of the opinion that you should comment when witnessing that. No someone does, and all **** breaks loose.

I don't think so. Maintenance should be on LL's account. Small maintenance (changing light bulb 's etc) should be your own. I recently saw many Villa's while moving to Dubai. All had the maintenance done by LL What was the arrangement you had with him so far?

If she accepted a job where there was no public transport then she knew what she was getting into and would tell her to quit the moaning if she didnt do her research. Let her be accountable. But she didn't! OP clearly states that they moved from an apartment near the metro station to a house with no public transport. She also says the maid is very good. Why not give her the extra dirhams for a taxi from the closest public transportation to home?

If there is no public transport available: yes I would. Taxi's will be too expensive on a maids salary, no matter how generous. If you lived near a metro station before, and you moved, she shouldn't suffer financially for this change in circumstances.

Is Spinach local? I went to the fruit and veg market of Wasl Road and it was impressive. Got a boat load of fresh spinach for 5 dhs. Wonderful!!! Whereabouts on al Wasl is it, and on what day? TIA I am so sorry!! I meant to say Emirates/Al Khail. You probably have heard of this place but if not (or you ahve no been) it is wonderful. You can get there from either road as you head toward Mirdiff. Big brown sign with white letters that exits to Fruit and Veg market Oké, saw the signs. Am relatively new here, so haven't been there yet. Are they open all days? I recall having read somewhere that they only open on Friday? edited by Oopsiedaisy on 08/03/2012

We have dealt with a lovely agent, specialised in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah. If you don't find anything directly, you can always give her a call. Her name is Aida, 0501640484 She was very helpful and showed us nice villa's in all price ranges.

I guess that's your answer then? Maybe after you give birth your mum can take a few weeks of and come over to the UK. That way she can spend some quality time with you and the LO's while being helpful at the same time. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 06/03/2012

Would your mum be helping you out, or would she be "smothering" you? I would assume it will be hard to take care of 3kids and a baby while starting up a new life and house in a new country.

Don't get me wrong, I am NOT condoning this, but what your describing sounds exactly like the way some people here treat their maids. So I guess the maids also "lead by example" edited by Oopsiedaisy on 06/03/2012

mothballs in my ward robes.? We recently moved into our new villa. I have cleaned the wardrobes over and over, kept them open for a month now. They still have the strong and sharp smell of mothballs. I know they serve their purpose, but I really hate that smell and it is getting into all our clothes! Any advice please?

In our previous location, yes we did! Between 5and 10% each year. Not for the sake of increasing, but because we were very happy with her. She has been with us 4 years, until we left. I guess I wll do the same here.

Unfortunately it is, unless you hire her via an agency. And for spongemonkey the update: I have managed to find a full-time lady who lives with her husband, All legit. She seems to be hardworking, trustworthy and happy with the arrangement, Time will tell if she can handle the free time.

That would be the Intercontinental. By far the best hotel in Faraya. Haven't been there in 2 years, so don't think it is recent. Small area, incomparable to any ski area in Europe, but cheap and nice enough for a weekend. Go longer, and I suppose you would get really bored. Unless of course you combine with Beirut, which is realle really fabulous. Don't know when you are planning to go, but ski conditions vary, usually best in Jan./early Feb. so if you plan on going soon you better check!

I recently dealt with a really great real estate lady. Her name is Aida. Tel 0501640484 Can't remember the name of her agency, but she was specialized in Jumeirah/umm Sequeim and showed me some really nice villas. After 2 she knew exactly what I was looking for. She was efficient, timely and knowledgeable. I was new here in Dubai, had read all horror stories on EW, and was very relieved having found Aida. Would recommend her to you!

Why don't you give her the keepsake, and give her the rest in cash. That way she can decide whether to "splurge" on dinner or save it to send home. And as for the raise, since we usually get a pay raise every year, and all costs are going up, it only seems fair to give it to our help as well. Provided of course she has done an excellent job. I would think anything between 5 and 10%

I remember the thread. Also have noticed several articles in newspapers and Time-out strongly advertising the animal friendly environment that was being created for those poor creatures. I started to believe it UNTIL I read that the public was actually allowed to stroke the penguins! That did it for me. No way that should be allowed to happen, no matter what advertising campaign they maintain.

O ladies, I feel for you. Have you ever considered using a hammer, or any other destructive tool for that matter? ;) iPads, computers, certain DVDs have had similar effects, but not long term - all very short term. I would think that if you smack'm on the head with your IPad, the IPad will go silent, rather than DS or DD. Hence the hammer:):)

No, you cannot register/buy car without EK drives licence, which in turn you cannot get without stamped passport. It 's a pain, we have been driving rentals for 6 weeks now. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 17/02/2012

Dragon Mart. You will have to do the measuring and hanging yourself. It will take you hours to find nice ones between all the shiney curtains, but I managed to find some great ones. They do black out as well and are really, really cheap. Sedat and the others are nicer, but so much more expensive, you can only spent you dirhams once,
